Christianity has become known for judgey people, strange words, ancient stories, confusing rules, and a members only mindset. This is why I stayed away from the church for so long, but it’s not supposed to be that way. I’m Jill Devine, a former radio pers
As we read through these stories of the Hebrew people ignoring God, turning to pagan idols, and worshiping a false god like Baal, it's easy to spot where these ancient people went astray. We would never worship a shiny baby cow. We wouldn't ignore a prophet with a good track record of rightly speaking God's Word. We will always follow great advice. I hope that last one is true. Scripture has some exceptionally wise words that are as relevant now as they were in ancient times. Psalm 119:105 tells us, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Join Pastor Chuck Schlie in this week's episode for three simple words from our God that will keep you on the right path and guide you to life in His great name!If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. Today we will learn about the prophet Isaiah. God's people were not good at listening, but Isaiah faithfully reminded the people of God's love and forgiveness. Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas:Isaiah gave people good messages. Create some good messages to send to friends and family in the mail. (ages 2-4)Israel and Judah followed other Gods and ignored the one true God. The sins of the people caused God to allow them to be taken away from their home. Isaiah warned them that this would happen if they did not change their ways. He told the people the truth even though the truth was difficult. Have you ever told the truth, even though it was hard? (ages 5-9)Isaiah's name means "God to the rescue." What does your name mean? Ask your parents to share how they chose your name. Isaiah tried to rescue the people by telling them God's truth. What would you have to do to live up to your name? (ages 10-12)One last thing! Israel is a mess. We already know that, but it's going from bad to worse. Israel is divided and the northern region (also called Israel) has fallen. Southern Judah has a faithful king who puts God first, but trouble persists, and God's chosen people are in a battle for survival. In his message, Ryan Pfendler examines three themes: Identity in God: Like Israel, we are called to find our identity in being children of the one true God, rather than seeking validation from worldly standards. Consequences of Idolatry: Israel's repeated idol worship led to their downfall. Ryan urges us to reflect on the "false gods" in our own lives, such as wealth or success, and to remember that true protection and peace come from God alone. God's Unfailing Love: Despite Israel's failures, God did not abandon them, and He will not forget us, even when we fall. God's love is steadfast, and He is always ready to welcome us back with open arms.If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. Today we learned about prophets. They shared God's messages and got to show off God's power! Parents, keep talking about this story at home by using some of these discussion starters:*(ages 2-4) How do we hear from God? We read the Bible, we learn from parents and teachers and pastors. God is so powerful! God can do anything!*(ages 5-9) Have you ever prayed for God to do something amazing, like a miracle? What happened? *(ages 10-12) God's prophets had to share messages with people who didn't always agree with them. Have you ever tried to share God's message with others? How did it go?One last thing! "The Story" continues with the story of Elijah from 1 Kings 18. The prophet Elijah stood boldly against the prophets of Baal, demonstrating unwavering faith in God amidst overwhelming opposition. The Dangers of Compromise: Pastor Jim reminded us of the dangers of compromising our values, drawing parallels between King Solomon's alliances and our modern-day temptations to forsake our principles for perceived gains. The Role of Prophets: We learned about the crucial role of prophets in ancient Israel, who spoke truth to power and guided the people back to God, emphasizing that genuine faith requires courage and conviction.Elijah's Bold Stand: The highlight was Elijah's challenge on Mount Carmel, where his faith in God was vindicated through a miraculous display, teaching us that true faith often requires us to stand firm even when the odds seem against us.If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. Listen in as we learn about a time when God's people got in a big fight and split in two. Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas:*This week's story was about good kings and bad kings. What did the bad kings do? (They didn't follow God and they didn't learn from their mistakes). What did the good kings do? (They learned from their mistakes and followed God). What mistakes have you made? What can you learn from them? (ages 2-4)*The people of Judah started fighting against Israel and decided to start their own country. Have you ever had two of your friends fight and decide not to be friends anymore? What happened because of this fight? Was there a way your friends could have settled their differences better? (ages 5-9)*Proverbs 13:20 says, "Anyone who walks with wise people grows wise. But a companion of foolish people suffers harm." Solomon wrote these words. Do you think Solomon's advice is true? In what way? (ages 10-12)One last thing! This week April asked you to “How do you feel when you are FORGIVEN for a mistake?”. We would love to hear your ideas! Wow, those Israelites sure know how to ruin a good thing! Their 100+ year streak of relative stability under the kings they asked for ends in (spoiler alert) a kingdom torn in two. How did things get so bad? Well, we learned last week about Solomon's gradual slide into idol worship. His reign as king that started out with so much promise ended in catastrophe for Israel when he turned on the one true God. It's the same trap we fall into today. No, we don't build literal temples to false gods, but we certainly prioritize our idols above our God and separate ourselves from Him. Pastor Chuck Schlie takes a look at the big mess Israel has made but also takes a look at the seeds of redemption among the destruction in this week's episode. If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. Today we heard about King Solomon. He became the wisest king in history, because He asked God to bless him with wisdom! Keep talking about this story at home by using some of these discussion starters:*(ages 2-4) What is a good choice? What is a poor choice? Who can help you make good choices? Pray: Dear God, please help me make good choices!*(ages 5-9) Being wise means being able to tell right from wrong. Why is it a good thing to be wise? Read a proverb that corresponds to today's date. (If it's the 30th, read Proverbs 30) Try to memorize it together!*(ages 10-12) What is an example of a situation where you could ask God to give you wisdom? One of the Proverbs says, “The fear (respect) of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Would you agree with that? Would your friends and teachers agree with that? One last thing! How awesome would it be for God to grant you anything you wanted, and then give you EVEN MORE than what you asked for? That's just the situation King Solomon finds himself in. King David has died and his son inherits the throne of a nation with the slogan "no worries" minted on their coins (figuratively speaking). It's good to be king...and good to be this king's subject. Their land is peaceful. Prosperity reigns and riches abound. Moreover, their ruler is renowned for his smarts and shares his wisdom in soundbites they can all understand. So why does the party end? In this case, the enemy is within, and it's one we're all too familiar with. Today we will learn about a time when David made a big mistake. God demonstrated extraordinary love to David and he shares that extraordinary love with us today. Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas:*When necessary this week, stop and pray with your child asking God to forgive your child when he or she has done something wrong. In appropriate ways, show your child that you also need to ask God to forgive you. (ages 2-4)*King David was called a man after God's heart, but he made a huge mistake and tried to cover it up. Is hiding sins ever a good idea? Why? Talk about what it feels like when you are trying to hide something that you've done. What's the best thing to do when you mess up? (ages 5-9)*God forgave David, but there were still consequences for his sin as David and Bathsheba's first son died. Can you think of any consequences you've faced after doing something wrong? Talk about some of David's greatest accomplishments and mess-ups. What can you learn from his life? (ages 10-12)One last thing! When was the last time you committed adultery and arranged the killing of your mistress's spouse to conceal the affair? I imagine the answer is "never." After reading David's story, you might be feeling pretty good about the severity of your sins. After all, you've never murdered a guy so he doesn't find out you're having a baby with his wife. Your sins are bad, but at least they're not that level of bad. Admit it...you've had this thought. We all have. There's a problem with this way of thinking that Pastor Chuck Schlie will explain in this week's episode. We have no reason to feel proud if our sins don't mirror David's. His sin is bold, but so is his contrition. David's story is both cautionary and instructive. If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. Today learned about a shepherd boy named David. God used him to do an amazing thing – defeat Goliath!Parents, keep the conversation going this week with your family! Here are some ideas:*(ages 2-4) Talk about Goliath's enormous size! Find something that is 9 feet tall, or use a measuring tape to show how big he was. Ask, “Who was David?” “Who was Goliath?” “What did God do for David?”*(ages 5-9) Talk about what David must have been feeling during the battle. Ask, “Would you have been afraid to face Goliath?” “How did David who faith in God?” “Are there any people that scare you? “What can we do about that together?”*(ages 10-12) Talk about “David versus Goliath” moments in modern times – like in sports, for example. It's a scenario when an underdog team faces a seemingly unbeatable opponent. We love to cheer for the underdog and see unlikely victories! Ask, “What does it take for a ‘David' to beat a ‘Goliath'?” “Do you think your faith is a strong as David's? Why or why not?”One last thing! It's like David vs. Goliath. You've likely heard this metaphor used any time an underdog goes up against something (or someone) they have little chance of defeating. It's an archetype of victory against all odds. It's also a story about trusting God to see you through your battles. That part gets left out of the cultural narrative, but we're going to explore it in this week's episode when we meet the future King David. As a shepherd boy that nobody would choose as their sovereign, David proves that outward appearances don't matter to a God who looks at the heart. Today we will learn about Hannah, her son Samuel, and the power of prayer.Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas:*With your child, make a simple poster about things to pray for by gluing pictures onto a piece of construction paper. In the middle, write, "God hears me when I pray." When your child wants to pray, he or she can look at the poster and pick a few things to talk to God about. (ages 2-4)*What do you think you would do if you heard a voice in the night calling your name? What do you think God wants you to do for him? (ages 5-9)*Eli's sons Hophni and Phinehas grew up in the temple, but didn't honor God. They didn't truly know and love God. How can you show God that you know and love him? Has there ever been a time in your life when you knew what God wanted you to do, but you did the opposite? Taking His law as a suggestion (instead of, well, law), you went ahead and did it your way. Obedience isn't our strong suit. God can certainly work through us when we do what is contrary to His will for our lives. But imagine how much sweeter the relationship with your Savior would be if you took the words "thy will be done" to heart! In obedience, there is so much God can and will do through you. It's not about being bossed around; it's about opening yourself up to the life that Jesus wants for you. We see the Israelites going their own way (again), and God giving them what they want. There's a lot for us to learn from their mistake and we will hear more about it in this week's episode with Pastor Chuck Schlie. If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. (or, how many sticks/rocks/leaves can you pick up in one minute) Ask, “who takes care of you?”*Ages 5-9: God took care of Ruth and Naomi even when they were going through hard times. As we continue our journey through “The Story”, Pastor Jim Mueller shared insights from the Book of Ruth, highlighting the remarkable story of Ruth and Naomi and what their faith and resilience can teach us today. Ruth's unwavering faith and loyalty shows us how faith can guide us through life's darkest moments, transforming bitterness into hope. Ruth's declaration, "Your people will be my people and your God, my God," challenges us to rethink our definitions of family and community. It encourages us to embrace those around us, fostering bonds that go beyond bloodlines and cultural differences. God works through our brokenness, using imperfect vessels to fulfill His perfect plan. Ruth's journey from widowhood to becoming part of Jesus's lineage illustrates that our past does not define our future with God!If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. (God gave Israel a second chance--actually lots of chances--to come back and follow him. He didn't give up on the Israelites.) Ask: What can our family learn from this part of The Story? Have you ever considered the downsides of peace and prosperity? Believe it or not, a life of comfort in which our needs are met and our wants are satisfied can be problematic. We saw this last summer when we went through the Book of Judges. Over and over the Israelites lost their way when life was going well. They became complacent and stopped relying on God. They had too much of a good thing. Maybe you can relate...or maybe you're going through some major struggles.Either way, worship is where you need to be. Whether it's to praise God for what's going right, or find comfort for what isn't, there's a reason for you to be in His presence. Today we used our imagination hats to hear from Rahab! She was brave and helped God's people. The past few weeks of our journey through "The Story" has brought us to some pivotal moments in our faith history. We see the Israelites escape slavery, witness an awe-inspiring miracle at the Red Sea, and create a covenant with God. Then they wander in a desert for 40 years. The grumbling and complaining got too much for God. This week, they finally get the chance to claim the land that was promised to them, and it's going to take a whole lot of courage and trust in God. That's something we're all in need of. Listen as Pastor Jim Mueller explains how the battle begins. The Israelites will be claiming victories and learning that faith and obedience play a big part in securing their triumphs. There's a big lesson in there for you.If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. You can complete them on your own, with your Community Group, or with family and friends. Today we will learn about explorers sent into God's promised land. Some responded in great fear, but Caleb and Joshua demonstrated great courage and faith!Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas:*Ten explorers were scared. Tell about a time when you were scared. Joshua and Caleb had courage. Tell about a time when you had courage (ages 2-4)*By focusing on earthly things, the 10 explorers were too scared to trust God. What are some things in your life that scare you? How can you overcome that fear? (ages 5-9)*The Israelites chose to listen to the ten fearful explorers, instead of Joshua and Caleb--who trusted God. Because of that, they missed out on the fruits of God's promises. Name a time that you followed worldly advice. What was the consequence? Talk about a time when you followed God despite strong opposition. What happened? (ages 10-12)One last thing! This week, April asked you, "How is life better when we trust God?". Can you recall a time this past week when you lived up to God's law? When you kept His commandments, loved Him with all you had, and put the needs of your neighbor above your own? Probably not, but you tried, right? Unfortunately, it's in our nature to sin. It's very easy for all of us to go our own way and decide right from wrong based on our desires. We're a very unruly lot. So why would God even bother with us? The answer is the "why" behind Moses being given the Ten Commandments. They weren't given as a measuring stick by which we earn God's favor with each one that we keep. In this week's episode, Pastor Chuck Schlie explores how God's love is demonstrated in both His law and in Jesus's atoning death. If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. (ages 5-9)*Watch The Prince of Egypt. Talk about what it must have been like to see those miracles in person. (ages 10-12)One last thing! This week we enter the Book of Exodus and meet Moses. For hundreds of years, the Israelites have been enslaved in Egypt. Their deliverer is one of their own who was raised in Pharaoh's household and lacked any notable qualifications to lead a revolt. Life is full of ups and downs. No one knows this more than Joseph, the apple of his father Jacob's eye and a man in possession of a very colorful coat. For Joseph, life was going very well, and he had that fancy outerwear to prove it. But then he gets sold into slavery and things start to go south for Joseph. Life improves...and then it knocks him down again. Can you relate? The hits can seem unrelenting, but Joseph's story reminds us that God is always with us. It's a story of hope, so join Pastor Chuck in this week's episode to hear how God's promises can get you through the toughest challenges. If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. Today marks our first episode of our new series based on "The Story", which will take us through our history from beginning to end. We'll get going with the creation account in Genesis. The answer there puts humans front and center of the narrative and makes this awesomely grand and sweeping story one that is extremely personal.Join Pastor Chuck Schlie as he talks about the why. New to Normal Goes A Long Way this season is the addition of a KIDS VERSION episode, which will be released on Thursdays over the course of 31 weeks. Families, you're invited to join our hosts, Hannah Lang and April Mueller, and follow along as they bring kids into God's big story through engaging storytelling. Why do we have a KIDS VERSION episode? The following information from Zondervan, a world leading Bible publisher and provider of Christian communications, sums it up nicely:Why not read God's story with your family this year? Studies indicate if the extent of your child's exposure to things of the faith is a only weekly visit to church or Sunday School, the likelihood is very great that when she/he graduates and leaves home her/his relationship with the Lord will turn cold. However, if you as a parent engage your children in the experience of reading and discussing the Bible, chances go up astronomically that they will remain strong in their faith after leaving home. You don't have to be an expert or have all the answers. You just have to be willing to experience it with them. Get involved in The Story of God. It will forever transform your life and your family's life. One last thing! Each week, Hannah and April will ask the kids a question. You can have your kid send in their answer by texting a voice memo to 636-280-5433 and they could be featured in an upcoming episode.Normal Goes A Long Way Website: https://www.normalgoesalongway.com/Normal Goes A Long Way Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/normalgoesalongway/Normal Goes A Long Way Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Normal-Goes-A-Long-Way-110089491250735Normal Goes A Long Way is brought to you by Messiah St. Charles: https://messiahstcharles.org/Normal Goes A Long Way is hosted on Zencastr. Happy New Year and welcome to Season 7 of Normal Goes A Long Way! This season, we will be releasing weekly episodes on Tuesdays and Thursdays (KIDS VERSION) over the course of 31 weeks. We invite you to join our host, Jill Devine, and follow along as we go through the story of the Bible through the words of “The Story”. At the end of Season 7, our hope is you'll be able to say your spiritual life received a boost in terms of knowledge, awareness of God's involvement in your days, and in your prayer life. Here's more information about “The Story” from Zondervan, a world leading Bible publisher and provider of Christian communications:You may be a bit intimidated by the Bible. You're not alone; many people are. And no wonder, its pages mention odd names like Jehoshaphat and Nebuchadnezzar. It contains accounts from places you probably never heard of, like Sinai and Samaria. And it seems to be made up of a lot of different, seemingly unrelated stories. But it really is one big, exciting story. You can see it easily if you open your Bible to the beginning and then flip all the way to the end.The first words found in Genesis 1:1 read: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Then, if you turn all the way to the back of the book, Revelation 21:1, you find, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away . . .” In the beginning God is creating the heavens and the earth. At the end he is creating a new heaven and a new earth. So the big question is this: “What on earth happened between the beginning and the end of the Bible?” If you can answer that question you will have uncovered the one seamless story of God.We'd love for you to read along with us! Jesus was a master storyteller. Through the use of parables, He could reveal His true nature and communicate important spiritual truths. The stories His followers recorded hold our attention, stir our emotions, and help us remember His teachings. The most popular are recognized by those outside the faith (e.g., the Good Samaritan) and the teachings they contain continue to challenge Jesus's followers today. In Storyteller, we will look at some of the lesser-known parables to uncover what Jesus was telling His first followers about the Kingdom of God that we are still trying to understand today.Pastor Chuck Schlie and Ryan Pfendler joined Jill Devine this week to talk about the lesser known parables they preached on during our Storyteller series; The Narrow Door, Workers In The Vineyard, and The Great Banquet.Normal Goes A Long Way Website: https://www.normalgoesalongway.com/Normal Goes A Long Way Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/normalgoesalongway/Normal Goes A Long Way Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Normal-Goes-A-Long-Way-110089491250735Normal Goes A Long Way is brought to you by Messiah St. Charles: https://messiahstcharles.org/Seeking The Still: https://seekingthestill.com/Two Kids and A Career: https://www.jilldevine.com/podcastNormal Goes A Long Way is hosted on Zencastr. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul identifies nine virtues that Jesus followers should develop in themselves to live in harmony with each other. He calls them the Fruit of the Spirit. If we display these fruit in our life, it is evident that we are walking with God and reflecting His character.Pastor Jim Mueller, Pastor Chuck Schlie, and Ryan Pfendler sat down with Jill Devine to discuss how they will be looking at each “fruit” in depth over the course of the next nine weeks at Messiah St. Charles.Normal Goes A Long Way Website: https://www.normalgoesalongway.com/Normal Goes A Long Way Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/normalgoesalongway/Normal Goes A Long Way Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Normal-Goes-A-Long-Way-110089491250735Normal Goes A Long Way is brought to you by Messiah St. Charles: https://messiahstcharles.org/Seeking The Still: https://seekingthestill.com/Two Kids and A Career: https://www.jilldevine.com/podcastNormal Goes A Long Way is hosted on Zencastr. Every December at Messiah St. Charles, we have a Christmas Mission offering. The offering benefits local organizations chosen by staff and congregants. One of the previous recipients was The Sparrow's Nest; More than childcare. We seek to come alongside young families with the love of Christ to educate, equip, and empower both the parent and the child. Through our innovative childcare cooperative families enrolled in our program will receive free childcare, mentorship, and case management to reach their family goals.Katie Lyczak is the Executive Director at The Sparrow's Nest and she joined Jill Devine to talk about the mission of The Sparrow's Nest, as well as how they used the offering from Messiah. One way you can support The Sparrow's Nest is through their annual fundraising dinner on Friday, September 27, 2024. VIP tickets include open bar, appetizers, and a meet-and-greet with our featured guest, Jennifer Maggio.Normal Goes A Long Way Website: https://www.normalgoesalongway.com/Normal Goes A Long Way Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/normalgoesalongway/Normal Goes A Long Way Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Normal-Goes-A-Long-Way-110089491250735Normal Goes A Long Way is brought to you by Messiah St. Charles: https://messiahstcharles.org/Seeking The Still: https://seekingthestill.com/Two Kids and A Career: https://www.jilldevine.com/podcastNormal Goes A Long Way is hosted on Zencastr.
