Look around at society today and it's easy to see the corruption of sin. Each day it feels like the world is going further and further off the rails. Violence is rising, truth is ignored, and faith seems like a relic. But what if I told you this was nothing new? When you see faithlessness and violence rising and believers experiencing mockery and increasing persecution, know that none of this is surprising to God. In Genesis 7 we continue the account of Noah and the flood. God promised a flood in judgment—and now it's raining. This isn't just ancient history. It's a wake-up call that sin and disobedience rightly draw God's wrath, but even amid judgement God shows grace.  The Rev. Dan Eddy, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Beloit, WI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Genesis 7.  Genesis isn't just the start of the Bible; it's the foundation of everything. Creation, sin, judgment, grace, covenant, and promise all take root in this remarkable book. The stories are ancient, but their truths are eternal. In this new series from Thy Strong Word, Pastor Phil Booe and his guests walk verse by verse through Genesis, exploring how God reveals Himself as Creator, Judge, and Redeemer. From the grandeur of the cosmos to the struggles of ordinary families, Genesis introduces us to a God who speaks, acts, and keeps His promises. So, whether you've read it a hundred times or are just now cracking it open for a serious look, this series will help you see Genesis with fresh eyes—and a deeper faith. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Out of the devastation of the previous chapter, the LORD promises to bring restoration for His people and His creation. He will make the desert a garden, He will strengthen His people's weaknesses, and He will heal His people's diseases. In this, the LORD will show His glory and bring His salvation. He will bring His people back upon the way that leads to Him so that they will rejoice with great singing. Isaiah's words speak not only about the return from exile in the Old Testament, but also about the work of Jesus in the Gospels and His ongoing ministry in the Church today.  Rev. Dr. Peter Elliott, pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Seattle, WA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Isaiah 35:1-10.  "The Fifth Evangelist” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through Isaiah 1-39. The prophet proclaims to the people of his day and throughout history that the Holy One of Israel alone is exalted. Those who put their trust in the strength of man will be brought low, but those who trust in the LORD will see that He is their Immanuel. Jesus is God with us who reigns over the kingdom of God forever and ever! Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Now that the LORD has led His people to the brink of the Promised Land, Moses recounts the places Israel has camped since the Exodus from Egypt. Each place mentioned along the way is a place where the LORD led His people. Throughout this history, Moses highlights God's gracious work for His rebellious people. From Egypt to Sinai through the wilderness to the east side of the Jordan River, for forty years the LORD fulfilled His promises to His people Israel. Now, as they prepare to enter the Promised Land, they must resolve themselves to drive out the idolatrous inhabitants of Canaan. The LORD gives this command so that Israel remains faithful to Him alone.  Rev. Peter Elliott, pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Seattle, WA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Numbers 33:1-56.  "Wilderness Wanderings” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Numbers. After the LORD delivers His people from slavery in Egypt, He leads them toward the Promised Land. Although the first generation of Israelites proves faithless, the LORD remains faithful to His people and brings a new generation of Israelites to the plains of Moab. This strengthens us to listen to God's promises today and stay faithful to Him as He guides us toward resurrection life.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Heaven and Earth— Heaven rejoices over the fall of Babylon, symbolizing the ultimate defeat of evil. The marriage supper of the Lamb is joyously proclaimed, signifying the final union between Christ and His Church. As the vision continues, Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, appears in His full glory, riding a white horse. With power and authority, He brings divine judgment and wages war against the beast, the false prophet, and the rebellious nations. How can we better share the message to all those who suffer that Jesus is King and has already conquered the evils of this world?  The Rev. Vernon Wendt, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, Moundsview, MN, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Revelation 19:1-21.  Shrouded in mysterious visions of cosmic battles, plagues, and catastrophic events, the Apocalypse of St. John, or as it's more commonly known--the Book of Revelation, paints a haunting picture of the end times. Cryptic symbols of beasts, the rise of the Antichrist, and the final judgment unfold with unsettling intensity, revealing the ultimate clash between good and evil. Yet, beneath its terrifying imagery, Revelation is also a deeply personal letter, offering comfort to early Christians facing persecution. It reassures them—and believers today—of God's control over history, His promise of redemption, and the certainty of Christ's victory.  Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. The prophet receives visions of judgment—locusts, fire, and a plumb line—each symbolizing God's impending punishment on Israel. While Amos intercedes and God relents twice, the plumb line vision marks the point of no return. When Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, tries to silence Amos, he boldly declares God's judgment on Israel and Amaziah's household, affirming his divine calling and the inevitability of Israel's downfall due to their persistent sin.  The Rev. Dan Eddy, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Beloit, WI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Amos 6.  Amos, a simple shepherd and fig tree farmer from Tekoa, was called by God to deliver a powerful message to Israel—a nation steeped in corruption, injustice, and complacency. Unlike the professional prophets of his time, Amos was an outsider, chosen to proclaim a divine warning against the moral decay and social inequalities that plagued the northern kingdom. Through vivid imagery and uncompromising language, Amos called out the wealthy elite for their exploitation of the poor, condemned the nation's empty religious practices, and foretold the impending judgment that would come if they did not repent.

Finally, Paul emphasizes the importance of enduring faithfulness in the face of persecution, acknowledging that God's word sustains believers even amidst opposition, while warning that those who resist it do so to their own detriment. The Rev. Dr. Peter Elliot, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Seattle, WA, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study 1 Thessalonians 1:1-2:16. In 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Paul writes to the church in Thessalonica to encourage and instruct them amidst persecution. In 1 Thessalonians, he commends their faith, love, and hope, offers guidance on living a holy life, and reassures them about the fate of believers who have died, emphasizing the hope of the resurrection and Christ's return. In 2 Thessalonians, Paul addresses misunderstandings about the Day of the Lord, urging believers not to be misled by false teachings and to stand firm in their faith. He also offers practical advice on handling idleness and continuing to live responsibly while awaiting Christ's return. Believe it or not, this chapter has nothing to do with weddings, although it's a very popular passage for the occasion. Instead, St. Paul is speaking to a deeply conflicted congregation and reminding the Corinthians Christians of their duty to one another: love. Love is more than a “warm and fuzzy” feeling. It's a verb, an action. Christian love is rooted in God's mercy toward us and mimics the self-sacrificing love Christ showed us. Ultimately, the “love chapter” points us to Jesus, whose love for us it so great we cannot help but share it with others. In this passage, Pastors Booe and Eddy discover why St. Paul says of faith, hope, and love that love is the greatest.

Rev. Dr. Peter Elliot, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Seattle, WA, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Romans 6. Out of his abundant grace, God forgives our sins for the sake of Christ's life, death, and resurrection. In the previous chapter, St. Paul asserted, “where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” (v. 20) What good news! Yet, the Apostle begins chapter 6 with an admonishment. He warns those who think that they can sin all the more since God is so gracious. The Apostle's overall message is those who are forgiven in Christ have died with him and, thus, have died to sin. The Christian is no longer a slave to sin, but an obedient servant of Christ. That's how we should see ourselves. There remains forgiveness for sins when we fail, but if we continue to relish sin, only death awaits. Listen as Pastors Booe and Elliot explain lawlessness and how God gives us eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Within a short time He tests Abraham's faith by asking Him to sacrifice this son. We do not fully understand the reason why the LORD tests His people, but it's clear that He will provide. This story reminds us that the LORD provides a Savior who was the only Son, carried the woody cross to the mountain, and was sacrificed for our salvation. It is Christ who lays over this story to remind us that He provides all things through Him. “O Holy Spirit, help us put on Christ goggles to better understand and give thanks for the depth of the Father's love to give up His only Son for sinners like us. Rev. Brady Finnern, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Sartell, MN studies Genesis 14. Wars, rumors of wars, famine and pestilence are not only before the end of the age, but have been occurring since the fall. As kings were fighting kings, Lot was taken and Abram rescued him by God's help. Out of nowhere priest and king Melchizedek blessed Abram and in faith, he gave 10% of everything to the LORD. Melchizedek is a unique figure in Scripture as he not only blessed Abram, but points us to Christ (Hebrews 7). This priest and king who was not from kingly and priestly lineage was brought to bless His people, yet, Melchizedek was simply a man and Jesus is the greater covenant, greater king, and greater priest. “Lord God, as You are the great High Priest, You have generously given all things, we look to You to help us to be generous to You and others. This week’s episode is the last episode of Season 4. With Christmas and the New Year right around the corner, like many people, Jill Devine decided it would be a good time to take a two-week break. Season 5 will launch on Wednesday January 6, 2021. This episode is dedicated to two subject matters. The first - a recent social media post Jill wrote about the last year and the things she experienced. The second – supporting small businesses. If you missed the social media post, here it is: On this date, 1 year ago (December 5, 2019), I was not smiling. I was experiencing every emotion except happiness. One year ago, I lost my job. It wasn’t “just” a job to me. It was my career. It was my livelihood. It was my identity. It’s where I spent a little over 20 years of my life doing some amazing things in the community, meeting some really cool people along the way, experiencing music with a different perspective, and gaining more appreciation for the inner workings of the music community. Many people, and myself included, thought I would land another radio job sooner than later. Between the pandemic and the loss of my job, I’ve experienced some of the darkest days of my life over the past year. BUT, let me tell you what else happened in the last year: *I was able to spend a lot of quality time with my family. I can’t say the entire time spent together was glorious because it definitely wasn’t. However, I learned a lot about myself and the things I need in order to be the best version of myself. I am a constant work in progress. *I became an entrepreneur with the development of Jill Devine Media, which is home to my podcast, Two Kids and A Career. I am so incredibly thankful for the ladies at Evoke Creative for guiding, supporting, and investing in me to make my small business dream become a reality. I’m excited to see the business grow and expand! *A special person from my church, Messiah Lutheran Church, saw something in me that I definitely didn’t see in myself. Fast forward and I’m now working for Messiah! I’ve never worked in ministry before and if you would’ve told me 10 years ago this was going to happen, I certainly wouldn’t have believed you. I’m loving what I’m doing and feel at home in the short time I’ve been an employee. God’s plan is truly indescribable. I won’t lie. There are days I think about what happened a year ago and a lot of the emotions take over, but the pain and hurt has definitely decreased. Like anything, it’s a process. What I can positively say is that I am happy and have a positive outlook for the future! Up next, supporting small businesses. Jill’s always been a big supporter of small businesses, but even more so once the pandemic hit. So many small businesses have shut their doors for good because of the pandemic. Jill has been trying to feature various small businesses over the last few months, but when Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday were approaching, Jill wanted to do more. She collaborated with Kaci Brueck of Brueck Creative to highlight small businesses in the area. Here are a few mentioned in this episode: *Pistols N Vixens *Milk and Honey Boutique and Wine Bar *Addy’s Way *St. Louis Cheeseboards *Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Creamery *Organized Interiors *Delicate Flower Soaps *PMP Images *Primo Playdough If there’s a small business you think Jill should check out, email her: hello@jilldevine.com. Don’t forget, the podcast is taking a two-week break and will resume on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. Until then, enjoy the Holidays with loved ones and have a Happy New Year! New to Season 4, the Supermom Shoutout! Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to of Amber, Wentzville, MO! Her employer/friend, Toni, nominated her and said: I nominate Amber Harris. She is an employee of mine and a mom of... wait for it .. 8!! 8 kids and she and her husband both work full time. David’s first two anointments were disappointing: after the first he became an exile, and after the second, he found out that Ish-bosheth had already been installed as king over the North. This time in chapter 5 however, the circle widens from Bethlehem to Judah to all Israel, and the king of Tyre builds David a palace. God does indeed bless those who do His will with success, but not always immediately or in the ways we define “success.” David’s reign foreshadows Jesus Christ’s, who reigns not for forty years but forever.

Rev. Brady Finnern, pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Sartell, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Proverbs 8:1-21. Lady Wisdom speaks once again. All of her words stand in sharp contrast to the adulterous woman from the previous chapters. Lady Wisdom’s address is universal; she calls to everyone. Her words bring prudence and sense. Because the words of Wisdom are the words of God, Wisdom always speaks the truth and brings value greater than any earthly wealth. Wisdom’s characteristics mirror the characteristics of the Christ as the prophet Isaiah reveals Him. Any earthly ruler who would be faithful listens to Wisdom’s call. As we hear Wisdom’s words, we cannot help but hear Jesus’ words. The way of Wisdom is the way He walks in order to be the way of salvation for sinners. In Him, we have an inheritance of heavenly treasure surpassing all other riches. “Wisdom and Instruction” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Proverbs. Although Proverbs is perhaps best known for its short sayings full of practical advice, the one true God has so much more in this book of wisdom. True wisdom begins with the fear of the LORD. Christians walk His way of righteousness rather than the way of wickedness because we trust that all good gifts come to us through His Son Jesus Christ, who is His wisdom made flesh for our salvation.

Faith and good works are both gifts from God. As God gives faith in Christ, that gift overflows into His gift of good works. Through the hearing of His Word, God gives the assurance that He is a gracious God whom we can fear, love, and trust above all things. This faith is more than knowledge; this faith is living and active reliance upon Christ alone for salvation. This faith flows into the good works that God has prepared for us to do, a reality that is taught by St. Paul, St. James, and all of the writers of Holy Scripture. As a living tree produces fruit, so Christians have been made alive by faith in Christ and so produce good works. These good works are shaped by the Ten Commandments. They are given to us for the sake of our neighbors wherever God has placed us, not to save us, but as the natural overflow of the gift of God in Christ. We need your support to stay on the air. Rev. Brady Finnern, pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Sartell, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Romans 15:22-33. St. Paul speaks to the church at Rome concerning his travel plans. Although his missionary work in the east has so far prevented him from visiting them, he intends for that to change soon. Though he has never visited these Christians in person before, he knows that his visit will be a mutual benefit for both himself and for them. Together they will be filled by the gifts of the Lord Jesus Christ. That truth leads Paul also to ask for their physical help in sending him on toward Spain. Such sharing of spiritual and material blessings is the reality behind the offering that Paul takes to the saints in Jerusalem. This Christian stewardship is not founded on guilt, but on the free riches of God in Christ Jesus. From that foundation, Paul asks for the Roman Christians to pray for his continued work and speaks the reality of God’s peace to them. “The Righteousness of God for You” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. Human righteousness cannot save, because all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory. Only the righteousness of God can bring life and forgiveness to sinners. This is the righteousness that He has fulfilled in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is the righteousness that is revealed in the Gospel, the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. This is the righteousness that is not earned, but is freely given by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

Sharper Iron from KFUO Radio

Rev. Brady Finnern, pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Sartell, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Romans 3:1-8. As St. Paul preaches that all men are unrighteous, objections arise, but the Apostle will not let any of them stand. If all stand condemned by the Law, Jews questioned the importance of having been a part of God’s people under the covenant of circumcision. The advantage was not in the outward rites apart from faith, but the proclamation of the Word of God that is received in faith. Wherever that Word is proclaimed, God is at work for the forgiveness and salvation of His people. The unfaithfulness of some was not the fault of God, nor does it bring into question His faithfulness. Rather, it points to the need to let God be God and allow Him to judge our sins so that He can judge us innocent for the sake of Christ. Sinners still try to insert themselves into the equation, however, even going so far as to claim credit because their unrighteousness allows God the opportunity to show His righteousness. Such foolishness pushes God off His throne and fails to recognize that sin and unrighteousness leads to death. St. Paul here sets the stage for the far better Gospel he has to proclaim: free salvation from sin and death. Rev. Brady Finnern, pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Sartell, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 18:21-35. Peter probably thought he was being generous in suggesting forgiveness for his brother seven times. Jesus’ answer is far greater, teaching Peter and all His disciples of the boundless forgiveness of God. The parable Jesus tells highlights the forgiveness of the king. The first servant has racked up a debt that is unimaginable. When the king calls him to account, he begs for patience and promises to pay back everything. This is laughable, but the king in his compassion forgives the entire debt. Amazingly, this same servant goes out and demands repayment from a fellow servant of a debt that is minuscule compared to his own. When patience is begged, the first servant refuses to forgive. His lack of forgiveness shows that he thinks he can pay back the king for his debt, and so the king gives him what he desires by throwing him into jail. The entire parable is a picture of God’s forgiveness for us sinners. There is no way we can pay back the debt of our sin, but God in His compassion has given Christ to pay the debt completely. That forgiveness clothes us in the righteousness of Christ, in which we turn and forgive those who have sinned against us. “All Righteousness Fulfilled” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that digs into the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The first evangelist proclaims Jesus to Jews and Gentiles alike as the fulfillment of God’s saving words and acts throughout the Old Testament. As the Christ in the line of David and Abraham, Jesus is the promised King who comes to bring sinners from every nation to live under His gracious reign.

Rev. Brady Finnern, pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Sartell, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 5:21-26. Jesus begins to expound upon the Law He has come to fulfill. Though the religious leaders of Jesus’ day might have limited the 5th Commandment to the physical act, Jesus proclaims that the matter goes much deeper. With His divine authority, He teaches His disciples that even anger in their hearts has already made them guilty of sin in God’s sight. Though we might like to think we’ve kept the 5th Commandment, Jesus reveals that we have not. His warning against anger, coupled with the rest of Holy Scripture, is an important reminder of how dangerous our anger truly is. Instead of anger and insults, Jesus calls His disciples to reconciliation. The peace that we have with God through Jesus must manifest itself in the forgiveness that is shared among Christians. To worship God while being at enmity with our fellow Christians is entirely inconsistent. The repentance and forgiveness shared in the Christian Church is found nowhere else in this world, as the Church lives out the reality that Jesus has given to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Rev. Brady Finnern, pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Sartell, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Amos 9:1-4. In Amos’ fifth and final vision, he sees the LORD Himself. The dead heterodoxy of Israel is about to yield its terrible result. The LORD has told His people to prepare to meet Him, and now He meets them, only not in grace, but judgment. He stands beside the idolatrous altar in Bethel to destroy the false temple there, along with all of the priests and worshipers. Even those who escape the crumbling building will not escape. There is no place high or low where Israel can flee such that the LORD cannot find them. Neither hell nor heaven, neither the highest mountain nor the lowest depth will provide a refuge from His judgment. Their friends will not be able to hide them, nor will exile amongst their enemies. The LORD will bring destruction upon His people, because His eye is fixed upon them for evil and not for good. The Law hits hard in this passage in order to point us to Christ. He is the true temple, crucified for our sins and raised for our justification. In Him alone is our refuge from the judgment of God. Hidden in Christ through the water and Word of Holy Baptism, we find that God’s wrath has been spent upon His Son so that eternal life is bestowed upon us. Christ is our only refuge.

They originally come from the Song of Moses by the Red Sea. This song of praise continues the theme of a second Exodus, this time from Assyria instead of Egypt. God Himself is the one who works salvation and produces in us both humble awe and joyful thanksgiving. He reverses our downward-flowing tears and gives us joy that wells up and bursts out from the ground. We are called to humbly make known His deeds among the peoples, though not everyone will humbly receive the Word. Yet, as did certain Israelites and Gentiles in the North in the day of Hezekiah, some will humble themselves and join us in our joy. To all who do, our risen Lord Jesus Christ will give “a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
