Jon Lunceford and Tim Melton used to host a daily sports talk show called Jox Primetime on WJOX 94.5 in Birmingham, AL. Off the Record was a way for them to share stories off the air in a different way. Now it is their only way. Conversations, deep discussions, real life stuff. This is non-scripted,…
Jon and Tim talk a little bit about the Snyder Cut of Justice League which neither can find 4 hours to watch, then dive into a conversation about physical copies of media (actual discs for games, movies, etc.) vs. just owning them digitally or enjoying through a subscription service. That leads into a long conversation about the current console war and where both stand when it comes to Microsoft vs. Sony vs. Nintendo.Tim then asks Jon about his weekend habits in high school (which included a lot of video games). Also, Tim says "Chicken Cordon Bleu" a lot.
Jon and Tim talk about their love of The Midnight, a synthwave band they discovered a few years ago, as they release their Halloween EP to all platforms and discuss how the band has helped shape their lives ever since.
Are you prepared for a zombie apocalypse? We probably aren't, but we like to think we are. We discuss what we would do if zombies took over one day. Then we gush over our favorite band, The Midnight, and everything they have done to influence us as people, as artists, as radio personalities and how their entire brand, aesthetic and mindset is something we wish we could see more of in the world.Plus, we talk about what it's like when we get hangry, where we spent most of our time in college and how Jon's wife is awesome for finally getting her hands on a PS5.
We did a podcast two weeks in a row, it's a miracle!Tim asks whatever happened to Titanfall, a game Jon was high on before it came out in 2014, and that leads in to a conversation about the shooter genre in general and how consoles may never have another "revolutionary" first-person shooter game like Doom, Goldeneye or Halo. That then leads into a conversation about G4TV - what we liked about it before and why we have incredibly low expectations for the upcoming revival of it or any other gaming-based TV channel moving forward. Finally the discussion moves into movies and how the younger generation has kept movie theaters alive (pre-pandemic) and it's up to younger people to keep the arts alive as the world evolves around emerging technologies such as social media, crypto/NFT's and more.
After another hiatus for too long, we're back...again! We talk about: - Tiger Woods' car accident - Jon's favorite music duo Daft Punk breaking up - COVID's effect on the movie industry and streaming - Why the DCEU sucks and the MCU is better (plus WandaVision spoilers!) Take a listen!
We're back! And with it, we have seven months of pent up energy and aggression that has built up during the COVID-19 pandemic - we were both furloughed for different amounts of time, we've been without movies and the world has lost it's damn mind. With everything that has happened, we just couldn't go on without getting political. Jon is kinda liberal. Tim is kinda conservative. And we try to have a civil conversation about how messed up the country is right now as we inch closer to the election. Then we talk movies...or the lack thereof and how sad it makes us. It's a long podcast, take a listen. 0:11 - Catching up, what life has been like during COVID for Jon and Tim. 7:23 - Jon's illness keeping things from starting back up a few weeks ago. 14:20 - Jon and Tim try to have a conversation about politics following the first couple of debates. They discuss, they argue, they yell, they interrupt each other and they try to make sense of things coming from two different ideologies over the course of an hour. 1:18:26 - Jon and Tim leave politics behind (mostly) and dive into movies and review their most recent viewing, Adam Sandler's "Hubie Halloween". 1:24:06 - Discussion of how sad we are that we can't go see new movies in theaters anymore. The only film Jon and Tim have seen together in theaters post-COVID was Tenet. 1:35:07 - What is the future of new release movies in America? 1:44:51 - Jon breaks down how HBO Max is winning the streaming war, including his love of Lovecraft Country. -- The music is "Monsters" by The Midnight (https://themidnight.bandcamp.com/album/monsters) which released this summer.
This week, we talk about whether or not "The Way Back" with Ben Affleck will be any good (and why Jon likes Matt Damon more). Jon then gives a way-too-in-depth explanation on the perfect TV size to watch a sporting event. We also discuss the new pictures from "The Batman" which show off the Batmobile and Jon talks about his expectations from the movie. Then Tim and Jon debate the postponement of the latest James Bond film "No Time To Die" due to the coronavirus and if it's an overreaction or not.

Jon is moving into a new management role within the company and leaving the Roundtable, so Jon and Tim reminisce on how cool the Roundtable is. Then Tim asks Jon if he'll shave his beard off in fear of the Coronavirus. (note, Jon is not leaving the Roundtable because he has the Coronavirus)
We talk about Jon's first Valentine's Day as a married man, and that leads into a discussion on Valentine's Day movies which leads into us recapping the Oscars. That then leads into us talking about how bad the DCEU is but how we hope Batman can save it after the screen test came out this week.
Jon and Tim dive into Kobe Bryant's sudden death a couple of weeks ago and what it means. They also jump into the latest version of the XFL as Jon talks about what he's looking forward to in the new league. Plus a review of Birds of Prey from Tim (hint: it's not good) and a preview of the 92nd Academy Awards. The new Jox: The Weekend style of show is a quick show, under 30 minutes that will feature commentary from Jon and Tim on sports and entertainment. The show will air Saturdays and Sundays on WJOX 94.5 with the podcast available at noon each Saturday.
We're all over the place in this one... We start with a recap of Succession Season 2 now that Tim has finished it. Then #BABYYODA Then Jon reviews Frozen 2 and that starts us down a path of discussion animated Disney/Pixar movies. We end with discussing how excited (or not) we are for the final Daniel Craig Bond movie.
We talk about the Myles Garrett incident and whether or not there should be criminal charges in the hit to the head against Mason Rudolph. We also do a deep dive into why we don't find as much joy in video games as we did when we were younger. All of that plus Tim's car breaks down, we reminisce on an old intern and more!
Tim makes poor decisions and Jon can only do so much before he gives in and follows Tim in his poor decisions. However, as a random man told them today by the dumpster - "Hakuna Matata". They guys also talk about all of the new TV that is out now with Disney+ about to launch and Apple TV+ just launching, and what it means for the future of TV both live and scripted.

We tackle a variety of topics in this edition of the podcast. 4:45 - Tim asks Jon about the phrase "Ignorance is Bliss" and what he thinks it actually means. That leads into a discussion about if you can truly be blissful if you are ignorant and can you ever really choose to be ignorant? 19:30 - The ignorance conversation leads into the question "what if people knew when they die?" That leads into talking about horror movies like Final Destination and The Ring which leads into Tim asking Jon about spooky things he would or wouldn't do. 24:31 - Tim asks Jon five Halloween-themed questions to make Jon's fiance happy. 36:18 - Jon and Tim go at it in debating whether or not the Rise of Skywalker trailer was good or not, and then go into super nerd mode discussing the world of Star Wars.

The image is Jon wearing a Joker mask at a Halloween store.
A little something different this week as Tim and Jon have both been on vacations the last two weeks. Tim asked Jon to put together his Lunce's List of the five best conversations that the two of them had on Off the Record in the 2018. 0:25 - Introductions and #5 is a conversation they have about...conversations in Episode 14, and the lack of civil conversations in today's society. 11:12 - #4 goes to Episode 37 where Tim asked Jon what his dream job would be within radio. 17:06 - #3 continues the conversation about Jon's dream job in Episode 43 but dives deeper into radio and how many times stations miss out on "moments" because of being tied to one format. The conversation turns into fear and why people are so afraid of public speaking. They also discuss how people need fear in their lives. 34:52 - The top choice on Lunce's List was Episode 36 where Tim asked Jon the question "What does it mean to be normal?" This led on to a long conversation where they try to define what "normal" even is and what it means to them and everyone else.
In this episode, Jon and Tim discuss all of the backlash that is coming out about the Joker movie from people who don't want the movie to be released. They also discuss the latest news with Disney including them kissing and making up with Sony over Spider-Man plus Kevin Feige signing on to do a Star Wars film. Then Jon has always been so negative about the south - he hates the heat, BBQ, and so much more - so what the hell DOES he like in the south? The image is Tim's daughter after she got into some baby powder and toothpaste one morning and Tim said she looked like the Joker.
Jon and Tim start the podcast with a spoiler-free review of Brad Pitt's new space movie Ad Astra. 7:00 - Then Jon and Tim's former co-host Aaron Daniel joins the podcast for the second time to discuss some crazy stories they all shared back in their old radio jobs. 9:03 (Story 1) - Aaron saved Jon and Tim seats for Star Wars: The Force Awakens after getting his wisdom teeth out. 14:40 (Story 2) - Aaron forgot his laptop at a high school football game and called the coach of the losing team to get it for him. 19:06 (Story 3) - Jon and Tim recall a prank they played on Aaron where he was thrown to the fire on air one day. 28:14 (Story 4) - Aaron recalls when he found out that a scheduled guest was dead and the talent didn't know it. 33:29 (Story 5) - Tim brings up how Aaron basically had two dates to Jon's birthday party this year (see picture). 42:17 (Story 6) - Tim recalls Aaron and Jon coming to visit him at the hospital after the birth of his daughter. Thanks to Aaron for being such a good sport!
On this episode, Jon and Tim open up the discussion by talking about JJ Abrams signing a big deal with WarnerMedia and with it, could he ever make a Superman movie and if so, does he have to be a white male? Then at about the 9:25 mark, Tim asks Jon his thoughts on micromanagement and how he stays motivated as a content creator. At 32:38, Tim asks Jon why he is so intrigued by wanting to be behind the scenes when he doesn't ever watch behind the scenes documentaries, and gets his thoughts on why he doesn't even consume radio and podcasts despite working in that field.
When Jon first started in radio, his biggest fan was his dad and he always wanted to join Jon on the radio. Jon said no. Our AJ Question of the Day asked us a couple of days ago about things we'd like to see come to Birmingham, but on this podcast, we spend the entire time lamenting about things that Birmingham no longer has, including: better movie theaters, Galleria Fun Country, good arcades, and Jon especially misses Mars Music. This is unscripted, real conversation. This is what happens off the air. This is Off the Record.
On today's episode, we discuss how we handle criticism on our show, specifically when people tweet comments that aren't based in any kind of fact. Our "AJ Question of the Day" asks us if we would ever be the voice of a sports team if we couldn't be a fan of the team. We discuss some movie trailers we've seen lately after Tim geeked out over the new Halloween trailer, and that takes us down a path of what comedic actors we still like, what comedy duos we enjoy most and what has happened to the good old days of funny movies. This is unscripted, real conversation. This is what happens off the air. This is Off the Record.
On today's episode, we talk about numerous topics. The podcast begins with Tim asking Jon about why he uses a smart speaker like the Amazon Echo at home. Tim and Jon then yell at each other over the office football pool where they pick college and pro football games and debate whether or not it was fair that Tim got a free win for a game that was cancelled due to the weather. At 30:33 they jump into today's "AJ Question of the Day" - What's something you would love to see come to Birmingham (doesn't have to be sports related)? Tim and Jon then discuss that they would both want better movie theaters in town because AMC is terrible (and all there is in Birmingham). This is unscripted, real conversation. This is what happens off the air. This is Off the Record.
