There is something to be said for a good gimmick. That one bit of gameplay design that a game can hang its hat on and say, "Hey, isn't this bloody cool?" That is what the team is talking about this week: those gameplay mechanics that have stuck in our heads over the years and left a lasting impression on games in general. From plastic instruments to amazing systems that get patented by evil corporations, the crew of Hewso, Stephen and Rob cast their eye over these mechanics and once again whistfully stare off into the distance thinking about Titanfall 2. In 2014, Titanfall introduced players to a faster way of moving through a first person shooter battlefield. Built by Respawn Entertainment after the dramatic departure of its founders from Infinity Ward, the game blended high speed parkour movement with towering mechanized Titans that could crash onto the battlefield in the middle of a match. In this episode, we explore how a small team of veteran developers rethought multiplayer design by focusing on mobility, survivability, and cinematic moments inside competitive matches. We also look at the unusual development choices behind Titanfall, including its use of the Source engine, cloud based computing for artificial intelligence, and its role as one of the early flagship titles for the Xbox One. But after playing multiple full matches, sitting down with the design and product leads, and seeing how the systems work together, it is clear this game is aiming for something genuinely different.Highguard introduces a new take on competitive shooters through a multi-phase raid structure built around strategy, teamwork, and base defense. Each match flows through gearing up, intercepting the shield breaker, and launching full raids against enemy bases.
