Listeners of Outlaw God that love the show mention: 1517,I recently stumbled upon The Outlaw God podcast and I must say, it has been a game-changer. As someone who has been following 1517 for years, I was thrilled to discover this podcast and wish I had found it sooner. The deep yet accessible Gospel-centered biblical teachings of 1517 have always resonated with me, and this podcast is no exception. I am only a few episodes in and already addicted. The insights shared throughout the show are profound, often causing me to rewind and listen again to fully absorb them.
One of the best aspects of The Outlaw God podcast is its ability to provide profound insights into the nature of God's grace and forgiveness. The episodes on Mark chapter 4 were particularly impactful, reminding me of the beauty and power of absolution. This podcast challenges me to reexamine my understanding of Scripture and my relationship with God, offering a fresh perspective that is both enlightening and liberating. It has opened my eyes to aspects of theology that I had previously overlooked or misunderstood.
Another great aspect of this podcast is Steven Paulson's ability to articulate complex theological concepts in an understandable manner. He delves into Martin Luther's analysis of natural law versus God's Word, drawing from a wide range of Luther's works. Listening to Paulson's elegant wordsmithing and intellectual gymnastics is both enlightening and entertaining. It offers a unique perspective on Luther's theology that sets it apart from other podcasts on similar topics.
While there are many positive aspects to The Outlaw God podcast, one potential drawback is that it may not be as accessible to those without any background in theology. It dives deep into Luther's thought process and may require some foundational knowledge to fully appreciate. However, for those willing to put in the effort, it provides a detailed exploration of Luther's theology that is well worth the time.
In conclusion, I cannot express enough gratitude for The Outlaw God podcast. It has changed my life and deepened my understanding of the Gospel. As a recovering evangelical who used to hold misconceptions about Lutherans, I am amazed at the insights into God's nature and Scripture that Dr. Paulson provides. This podcast is a gift to anyone seeking a clearer understanding of theology and the freedom offered through Christ's redeeming work. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a thought-provoking, transformative listening experience.
Dr. Paulson continues to analyze the appeal Erasmus makes to Sirach in chapter 15. Here, Erasmus speculates, creating an internally consistent logic about free will, creation, and sin. Though his speculation may be consistent, Luther aptly demonstrates how Scripture does not support it. This week, Dr. Paulson outlines Erasmus' bold claim that the existence of the law necessitates human free will. Erasmus begins to argue against the clarity of Scripture and advocates for looking at Sirach chapter 15 to examine the relationship between the law and free will. Paulson demonstrates how Luther used the Scriptures to prove this theory wrong. This episode begins an examination of the Apostle Paul's proclamation that where there is no law, there is no sin. From here, Dr. Paulson will examine Erasmus and Luther as they consider what it means to be free and what, if any, glimpse can be gathered from looking back to Eden. Dr. Paulson continues to characterize the dialogue between Luther and Erasmus. As Erasmus begins to grasp every possible need for free will, he finally arrives at an argument based on societal behavior. Erasmus knows Luther does not want society to be lawless and appeals to the law's ability to rein in chaos. Luther, of course, does not give in and continues his appeal to Scripture. Is the Gospel just a feeling of relief? Steve Paulson addresses the difference between the internal need for relief from the law and the external reality of the Gospel. Paulson continues the conversation about the "spiritual man" who cannot be judged. But how do you know if you can claim such spirituality? The man who cannot be considered is not identified by internal revelation, thoughts, or theological musings. Instead, the fortification from judgment comes from the certainty of the external word of the Gospel preached. God's word is not just a guide, making you desire to leave the cave and enter the world of real things. Dr. Paulson discusses Plato's analogy of the Cave. He emphasizes how Erasmus used this analogy to confuse God's words of law and gospel. This construction is considered the word of God and the enlightening power that can draw us out of the Cave. But the word of God is not just a tantalizing light but the actual creative power of God to save.
