Summary In this episode, Petia Whitmore from My MBA Path delves into the intricacies of the MBA application process, emphasizing the importance of storytelling, clarity of purpose, and the evaluation criteria used by admissions committees. Petia shares insights from her experience as a former Dean of MBA Admissions, outlining the two phases of the application process: evaluation and selection. She highlights the significance of crafting a unique narrative that showcases a candidate's impact and authenticity, while also addressing common misconceptions about test scores and work experience. The discussion culminates in practical advice for prospective applicants on how to approach their applications with curiosity and a sense of possibility. Takeaways Your application is more than just numbers. Craft a narrative that tells your unique story. Evaluation determines admissibility; selection determines desirability. Clarity of purpose is crucial in your application. Demonstrated impact can come in many forms. Authenticity is key to standing out. Quality of experience is more important than quantity. Test scores indicate academic preparedness but are not the sole factor. Timing your application can influence your chances of admission. Approach the application process with curiosity and openness. What if the numbers we use to measure audit quality are fundamentally flawed? PCAOB Board Member Christina Ho reveals why the headline-grabbing 46% deficiency rate in public company audits deserves serious scrutiny. In this candid conversation, Ho explains why smaller audit firms face disproportionate regulatory burdens, how the PCAOB's inspection approach may distort quality metrics, and why less than 5% of "deficient" audits result in incorrect opinions. She also shares her experience of being publicly criticized by Senator Elizabeth Warren for challenging the status quo. Whether you're an auditor, investor, or financial professional, this insider perspective will transform how you interpret future audit quality statistics.Chapters(00:58) - Explaining the PCAOB (01:59) - Inspection and Enforcement Programs (03:53) - Sampling and Inspection Frequency (05:58) - Challenges for Smaller Audit Firms (10:50) - State of Audit Quality (14:03) - Deficiency Rates and Their Implications (31:34) - PCAOB's Role and Accountability (37:11) - Has the PCAOB Improved Audit Quality? How does a profession revitalize itself when salaries haven't budged since 2007? In this episode, Blake and David examine the shocking reality that Big Four audit associates in Chicago earn the same salary range today as they did nearly two decades ago. They also explore why accounting's value proposition has stagnated in a world where financial statements fail to capture what truly matters to modern investors, and you'll hear their take on the IRS's plan to cut 50% of its workforce, Social Security's future, and the economic impact of tariffs—including a surprising clip from Ronald Reagan himself. In this episode of Doug Casey's Take, Doug and I discuss Trump's latest speech and the broader geopolitical shifts unfolding before our eyes. As always, Doug doesn't hold back. “Trump is mightily entertaining, but let's be honest—his rhetoric is often nonsense. That doesn't mean he's wrong about everything.” “The U.S. government is a dangerous predator sitting on top of America. People conflate the government with the people—they're not the same.” “If you want to solve the drug problem, legalize drugs. That's the only answer. Everything else is theater.” We cover Trump's plan to “unshackle” the economy, the deep state's resistance, the looming financial collapse, and why he believes America's overreach—from the Panama Canal to Greenland—is a mistake. Doug also gives his take on the latest Ukraine minerals deal and what's going on with Europe ramping up military spending. 00:00 Introduction and Initial Impressions of Trump's Speech 00:15 Entertainment Value and Comparisons to Zelensky's Visit 01:28 Analyzing Trump's Speech and Economic Claims 03:07 Fact-Checking and Media Reactions 05:49 Trump's Economic Policies and Their Implications 19:06 Discussion on Social Security and Tax Policies 21:56 Trump's Proposals for the Auto Industry and Tariffs 27:23 Declaring War on Drug Cartels 29:58 The Cycle of Violence and Drug Addiction 32:08 The Death Penalty Debate 34:49 Transgender Issues and Child Transition Surgery 37:00 National Security and the Golden Dome 39:28 Reshoring Shipbuilding and the Panama Canal 44:51 Trump's Radical Policies and Greenland 54:48 European Relations and Defense Spending 58:59 The Mineral Deal in Ukraine 01:01:48 Concluding Thoughts and Future Speculations

Takeaways Trump's presidency will almost 100% signify a tariff on all international imports. Companies will have no choice but to either increase their prices, absorb the cost, or to look at sourcing locally. Other than that, expect higher freight costs in the near term. Almost everyone will be placing more orders before tariffs are implemented, which will spike up freight costs. Big tech will certainly be affected too. Trump's stance on TikTok has softened. Amazon and Trump have a rough relationship, and its unlikely that Trump will ease their FTC issues. In this episode David and Jake talk about the book 'Paul and the Gift' by John Barclay and deep dive into how the theology of grace reveals profound truths about God's unconditional love for us. We learn that grace was a concept present in Judaism, but Paul's radical message was that God's grace is given freely to all, Jew and Gentile alike, without regard to our worth or merit. The crucifixion and resurrection of Christ defeated the power of sin and enables us to live transformed lives empowered by the Holy Spirit. While we cannot earn God's favor through legalistic rule-following, true grace will naturally overflow into a life that bears good fruit. As we grasp the depths of God's unmerited kindness towards us, it should fill us with humility, gratitude and a desire to extend that same grace to others. What role does our evolutionary history play in how we learn? Is it even useful to look and try to determine what's «natural» for us humans? In what way does our biology determine what is good for us? Did evolution «design» us to be happy? What is evolutionary mismatch? What sort of skills require explicit instruction? How do we balance this need with the developmental need for autonomy and independence, which kids in our current culture get less of than before? Why is it developmentally useful to be cognitively immature, and why are young kids natural optimists? These and many other questions are discussed in this episode, where Lars talks to David F. Bjorklund about his work on human development and evolutionary psychology. We also discuss some of the work of other researchers in the field, like David C. Geary and his distinction between biologically primary and secondary abilities, as well as some of Peter Gray's positions on learning, autonomy, age mixing and mental health. David F. Thanks to Marius Hobbhahn, Johannes Treutlein, Siméon Campos, and Jean-Stanislas Denain for helpful feedback on drafts. Here is a set of hypotheses: The first AGIs will have LLMs at their core Effective plans to defeat humanity can't be found in a single LLM forward pass LLMs will solve complex tasks by using English text (self-prompting, scratch pads, combination of expert LLMs, .) I call these the Translucent Thoughts hypotheses. I think the Translucent Thoughts hypotheses are likely (around 20% conditioning on AGI before 2030) because: Text pretraining is more efficient at building algorithms and knowledge required for real-world plan generation and evaluation than alternative methods; Future models are likely to be like Transformers, which use a limited amount of serial step in a single forward pass, and deception requires many serial steps; Text pretraining and slight fine-tuning makes model able to use text generation to increase the maximum number of serial steps by a huge factor. Getting this increase through other means is likely to be hard and not competitive. If these hypotheses are true, it should lead us to prioritize underexplored research directions, such as circumventing steganography or building extremely reliable text-supervision methods. I think those deserve attention, because Translucent Thoughts AIs are not safe by default. In this post, I argue that we may will in a world where the first AGIs will look like X, and I then describe ways to make the first AGIs safer given X. This is different from most other works in this space, which often directly describe a kind of safe AGI. Despite this, the ideas of this post are close to some other works describing paths to safe AGIs, such as: Externalized Reasoning Oversight, which describes a class of solutions similar to the one outlined here, but also aims for additional properties which I argue can be replaced with a less stringent hypothesis about AI systems; Conditioning Predictive Models, which makes assumptions slightly different from the Translucent Thoughts hypotheses, yielding different research directions; The Open Agency Model and Factored Cognition which describe subsets of AIs with Translucent Thoughts, which might be safe. The Translucent Thoughts Hypotheses Here, I sketch a world in which the first AGIs have certain properties. I argue that this world is likely, and thus a subset of all possible futures to care about. But I think it's not a large part of all possible futures (20% conditioning on AGI before 2030). The First AGIs Will Have LLMs at Their Core By “first AGIs” I mean the first systems able to automate all cognitive tasks. AGI is likely to do reasoning and planning using LLMs. AGI might rely on vision models for some tasks and interactions with the world, and it might use explicit search processes like AlphaGo. But I expect LLMs to do plan generation and evaluation, which are the core of the system (from an Alignment point of view). Why: Vision systems are bad at coming up with and evaluating deceptive plans. Explicit search processes can't generate and evaluate plans in the real world. LLMs seem to be able to do both plan generation and evaluation. (Plan generation and evaluation are the core tasks we would like to monitor to make AGIs safe, which is why I focus on those.) End-to-end neural networks won't be able to compete with LLMs when it comes to reasoning and planning, or at least, end-to-end networks will use “their LLMs parts” to do their most advanced form of reasoning and planning. This means that systems lik...

SUMMARY In this podcast, Michael Pierce talks about the Glycemic Index and how it can be used as a strategy for weight loss. He advises listeners to measure their progress and to set goals that they can realistically achieve. He also discusses how the mind responds to numbers and how this can be used to motivate oneself. The conversation discuss the fact that most diets fail and the reasons why. The main reason is that people are not able to stick to the diet long term. The conversation also offers some advice on how to be successful with a weight loss strategy. They suggest finding a strategy that is simple and easy to follow. The speaker discusses the problem of obesity in the United States, which has become an epidemic. They note that nearly 60% of the population is overweight, and nearly 25% is obese. This weight problem is causing serious health problems, such as type two diabetes, which was once only seen in older adults but is now being seen in schoolchildren as young as eight or nine. The speaker argues that there is a sensible approach to weight loss that can be followed for a lifetime, and that this is not a diet but a weight management system. The glycemic index is a system that rates foods according to how quickly they are converted into glucose by the body. Foods that rate high on the glycemic index cause blood sugar levels to spike rapidly and then crash soon afterwards, leading to hunger and fatigue. This can eventually lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The glycemic index can help people lose weight by choosing foods that promote a slow, moderate rise in blood sugar levels. In this book, you will learn about the glycemic index and how it can help you lose weight, as well as other important information about carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Episode 61: Semaglutide for Obesity. Dr Arreaza discusses with Dr Carranza the results of the STEP trials: Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with obesity, which allowed semaglutide gain FDA approval as a treatment for obesity.By Hector Arreaza, MD, and Claudia Carranza, MDThis is Rio Bravo qWeek, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California. Our program is affiliated with UCLA, and it's sponsored by Clinica Sierra Vista, Let Us Be Your Healthcare Home. One of the major challenges of modern medicine is to find an effective treatment for obesity.Obesity was considered a disease in 1998 by the National Institutes of Health[1].In 2002, the Internal Revenue Service, AKA the feared IRS, issued a statement to make obesity treatment a deductible medical expense. Who would have known that obesity was tax deductible?Later, in 2013 obesity was accepted as a complex, chronic disease by the American Medical Association[2]. Many other organizations have made statements in favor or against the definition of obesity as a disease. We recently announced the exciting news of semaglutide as a new FDA-approved medication for the chronic treatment of obesity. Today we want to give you a very brief summary (brief-ísimo) of the trials that allowed semaglutide to gain that FDA-approval. Semaglutide was tested at different levels with the STEP trials. STEP stands for Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with obesity (STEP). All these trials were done in 68 weeks, all patients received counseling about lifestyle modifications, 70-80% were women, ages averaging 40-50 years old.STEP 1: Does semaglutide cause weight loss in patients without diabetes? The focal point of this trial was weight management with semaglutide in patients without diabetes. This was a double-blind trial. There were 1961 participants enrolled. A group was assigned to placebo and another group was assigned to weekly injection of semaglutide. For the semaglutide group, the goal dose of semaglutide was 2.4 mg, starting with 0.25 mg, increasing every 4 weeks: 0.5 -> 1.0 -> 1.7 -> 2.4 (reaching the goal dose in 4 months), 3 out of 4 participants were Caucasians. Outcomes: after 68 weeks weight reduction was -16.9% in patients on semaglutide, more than 86% of participants had a weight loss >5%, 69% lost >10% of their weight, and 50% percent lost >15% of their body weight, and about 32% lost >20% of their weight. This may be comparable to bariatric surgery in some patients; however, the weight loss is not as dramatic. Other parameters improved were waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides. LDL and total cholesterol were not significantly affected. There was a clinical meaningful change in 40% of patients. 7 out of 100 could not complete trial for GI adverse effects, most commonly nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation. Acute pancreatitis presented in 0.2% of the semaglutide group (all recovered during study) vs 0% in the placebo group[3]. STEP 2: Does semaglutide cause weight loss in patients with diabetes? The focal point of this study was weight management with semaglutide in type 2 diabetes mellitus. 1210 patients participated in 12 different countries across Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, South Africa, and Asia. Patients were randomly assigned to semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly, Semaglutide 1 mg weekly, or placebo. Weight loss was superior with semaglutide 2.4 mg, -9.6% of body weight with semaglutide vs -3.4% weight loss with placebo. As you can see, weight loss in individuals with diabetes is more difficult. The effect on diabetes control was about the same with semaglutide 1 mg vs 2.4 mg. The 1 mg dose reduced A1C -1.5%, and the reduction was -1.6% with semaglutide 2.4 mg. A1C reduction was about the same regardless of weight loss. STEP 3: Does Intensive Behavioral Therapy increases weight loss in patients using semaglutide?Intensive behavioral therapy was put to the test. 611 participants were enrolled. Each patient in this study received IBT: 30 brief sessions, 19 in the first 24 weeks, monthly thereafter provided by a registered dietitian. Participants had obesity and overweight, lived in 41 states in the US, had >1 related comorbidity, no diabetes. They all were put on a low-calorie diet for 8 weeks and were randomized to receive either semaglutide or placebo. Weight loss was accelerated by the low-calorie diet and IBT earlier in the study, but at the end there was only 1% difference between the two groups, 17.6% weight loss with IBT vs 16.9% weight loss without IBT. Further research is needed to determine the potential benefits of including a low-carb diet to semaglutide to increase long term weight loss. STEP 4: What happens to weight loss if we stop semaglutide? The focal point of this study was sustained weight management. Patients were randomized to placebo or semaglutide after 20 weeks, but continued lifestyle modificationsThose who remained in semaglutide, continued to lose weight up to 18% (lost 8% additional weight). The placebo arm gained half of their weight back. If you stop the medication weight is likely to come back. Weight loss comparison: Contrave® (bupropion-naltrexone) and Saxenda (liraglutide) ~5% weight loss, Qysimia® (phentermine-topiromate ~9%), semaglutide (Wegovy®) is about 15%. The average weight loss with semaglutide is higher than other meds, including liraglutide, after 1 year of use. Medullary thyroid cancer: Not shown to be increased risk.Newer medications that act on the GLP-1 receptors are showing increased rates of weight loss.• IBT is less important in weight management if a highly effective medication is used to curb appetite•Improved glucose control and CVD risk reduction is achieved when patients have ≥10% weight reduction•Obesity is a complex chronic disease that requires long-term managementCredit: This summary was inspired by Dr Robert F. Kushner, Professor of Medicine, Northwestern University Feinber School of Medicine. Conclusion: Now we conclude our episode number 62 “Semaglutide for Obesity”. After listening to this episode, we hope you understand the role of semaglutide in the treatment of obesity. Semaglutide has shown to cause weight loss in patient with and without diabetes, and the benefits go beyond weight reduction to include lower blood pressure and triglycerides, among other health markers. Semaglutide is not for everyone, but it can surely be the answer to many of your patients with obesity. Even without trying, every night you go to bed being a little wiser. Thanks for listening to Rio Bravo qWeek. She discusses ideas about the role of emotion in social and moral life, and other ways that the human brain's workings influence how society operates. Rengin Firat is an Assistant Professor of Sociology from the University of California, Riverside. She recently published “Opening the “Black Box”: Functions of the Frontal Lobes and Their Implications for Sociology” in Frontiers in Sociology and "A Novel Measure of Moral Boundaries: Testing Perceived In-group/Out-group Value Differences in a Midwestern Sample" in Socius.

Can anyone tell 'ol Henri what a Muslim living in America looks like? Anybody?! See, that's the whole problem. Being a Muslim means a specific type of religious practice, but which sect? Which tribe? Which country or region do they hail from? Are they practicing the religion presently? If not, are they simply trying to survive in their culture, albeit one that's hard and severe for apostates?! Is it the white guy in a beige track suit with a gold chain around his neck? Maybe, but nothing says he's less a Muslim than the former Arab Iraqi translator working at the front desk at State Farm. It's a hatred with much history in the US, both socially and politically, used to further foreign policy interests for those vested in its loathsome logic. And with that loathsome logic in mind, Danny and I present our sit down with Dr. Rachel Gillum, Muslim-American integration expert and author of "Muslims in a Post-9/11 America: A Survey of Attitudes and Beliefs and Their Implications for U.S. National Security Policy" Enjoy the show?! Rapidly evolving technology and modes of communication have dramatically changed the landscape of copyright law and how it affects faculty today. Notions of copyright ownership, fair use, and even creativity have been transformed not only by the digital revolution but also by generational differences in understanding these questions. On February 11, 2010, the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence hosted a workshop titled “Copyright Trends and Their Implications for the Classroom.” This program offered an introduction to copyright, particularly as it affects the work lives of faculty as scholars and teachers.
