In this episode of Outlaw God, Dr. Steven Paulson and Caleb Keith continue their exploration of Psalm 51, examining how David's encounter with Nathan reveals the difference between God as a mere judge and God as the Justifier who forgives sinners through the gospel. They argue that the law can only expose sin, punish wrongdoing, and attempt reform, while only God's absolving word can truly remove sin and create a new heart. Through David's prayer, "Have mercy on me, O God," the episode presents justification as God's complete and decisive act of forgiveness, accomplished apart from the law through the promise fulfilled in Christ. God is both the Righteous Judge and the Justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
In this episode of the Outlaw God podcast, Caleb Keith and Dr. Steven Paulson explore Luther's understanding of being "Theodidact" — taught by God through the preaching of law and gospel rather than through inward spirituality or self-discovery. Using Psalm 51 and David's confrontation with Nathan after Bathsheba, they unpack how the law exposes humanity as completely sinful while the gospel creates an entirely new identity through God's mercy alone. The conversation centers on Luther's theological "summa": "God the Justifier, I the sinner," showing how true knowledge of God comes not through self-improvement, but through forgiveness spoken by God himself. Sunday evening service, looking at the Heidelberg Catechism, or the Orthodox Catechism, Lord's Day #4, questions 9, 10, 11: 9) BUT DOESN'T GOD DO US AN INJUSTICE BY REQUIRING IN HIS LAW WHAT WE ARE UNABLE TO DO? No, God created humans with the ability to keep the law. They, however, tempted by the devil, in reckless disobedience, robbed themselves and all their descendants of these gifts. 10) WILL GOD PERMIT SUCH DISOBEDIENCE AND REBELLION TO GO UNPUNISHED? Certainly not. He is terribly angry about the sin we are born with as well as the sins we personally commit. As a just judge He punishes them now and in eternity. He has declared: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." 11) BUT ISN'T GOD ALSO MERCIFUL? God is certainly merciful, but He is also just. His justice demands that sin, committed against His supreme majesty, be punished with the supreme penalty-eternal punishment of body and soul.

There are realities within God's own heart, ingredients in His eternal nature, which cannot be ignored or changed, even by Him. They are essential elements of who He is, and who He is forms the foundation of all creation, of the spiritual and the physical worlds. Justice and love are both completely true of God, but love is His dominant trait. Above all else He loves. This is why we exist; this is why He has given us freedom; this is why He has made the ultimate personal sacrifice to rescue us from our misuse of that freedom. He is the Rock upon which all of the universe rests. He defines what is good and bad, right and wrong, clean and unclean, beautiful and ugly. And He never changes. In the passage before us Paul wants us to see that in order to save us God did not violate His own justice. He is able to give the gift of righteousness to those who have faith, not because He is morally indifferent to our sins, but because someone else paid our penalty. The cruel demands of justice, which shows no mercy, have been met. Today we'll look into the heart of God and see there some frightening realities... and a depth of love beyond our comprehension. Peter Mahaffey - God Our Shield, Our Rewarder and Our Justifier - Genesis 15:1-6 | Sunday March 15 2026 by Royal York Baptist Church
Jesus told a dying criminal on a cross next to His own that He would be with him that very day in paradise. Why? What had that criminal, who admitted himself that he deserved what he was getting, done to deserve such favor and promise from Jesus? Explore the doctrine of justification in Pastor Kevin's message, THE JUST JUSTIFIER.
We look through the window of the cross to see how sinners gain a new legal standing before a righteous God. We stood beneath a debt we could never afford, our failures and transgressions recorded against us. But in Christ, God canceled the record of debt . . . nailing it to the cross. Jesus paid the legal price for crimes he did not commit, and with his final word—tetelestai, finished—our debt was discharged. In the great exchange, my record of sinfulness goes to Jesus, and his record of faithfulness goes to me. Thus, God becomes both just and the justifier of sinners, offering grace, mercy, and a cleared record to all who lean upon Christ.

Summary: where we're at in Romans and where we're going in this passage. Relevance Bridge: What does this have to do with me? God publicly presented Jesus as the sacrifice who satisfies his righteous wrath, so that God may remain just while justifying sinners who believe in Jesus. THE PROVISION: "GOD PUT FORWARD CHRIST" (V. 25A) THE PURPOSE: "TO SHOW GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS" (VV. 25B–26A) THE RESULT: "SO THAT HE MIGHT BE JUST AND THE JUSTIFIER" (V. 26B) Conclusion: God smiles upon you because he frowned upon his Son in your place
Sin deserves judgment. Your sin deserves God's judgment. In the first chapter of Isaiah, God declares his righteous judgment against the sin of Israel. Taking verse 27 as a general principle, applicable to God's dealings with sinners today, we look at the redemption promised, a ransom price paid, a deliverance accomplished. Then we turn to the redemption described in terms of the justice and righteousness of God displayed. Finally, we look at the redemption bestowed on the penitents. Where does a sinner find such a redemption? Where does God show himself both just and the Justifier, if not at the cross of Jesus Christ?
Have you grasped the concept that God is masterful all by Hisself!! Therefore He had Jesus already in mind when creating Adam and Eve. Jesus was always the solution! He was always the Vindicator, Justifier, and Sacrifice!! It was nothing we could do or deserve. Because truth is we don't deserve the grace or mercy but I pray you bask in it! Let it overwhelmingly overtake you. Because we are filthy and need a Savior!! But don't let Jesus just be Savior let Him be your Ruler too.

Exploring the book of Romans for the next several months, verse by verse.
If anyone deserved to have His name announced by the most important religious and cultural leaders of His day, it would have been Jesus. And yet, as we read through the Gospel of Luke, that’s not what we find. Instead, we encounter ordinary—and if we’re honest, somewhat unassuming—people who play some of the most meaningful roles in Jesus’ story. Luke gently reminds us that Jesus is not only the Messiah for the rich and famous, but the Savior for everyone. This week, we’ll be looking at Simeon and Anna and seeing how God uses faithful, well-seasoned lives to proclaim Jesus as the Messiah—the consolation of Israel. Simeon carries no title, rank, or prestige, yet he recognizes Jesus for who He truly is when many others miss it. Anna, a woman in a world that often preferred women to remain unseen and unheard, becomes one of the boldest voices proclaiming the truth about Jesus. They are ordinary people marked by extraordinary faithfulness to all that God had promised. Simeon and Anna lived with deep conviction and patient hope, trusting that God would bring the salvation they had long awaited. Jesus is the long-promised sign for Israel, and through His work, many would follow Him and live with the same purpose and hope. Yet others would reject Him and choose their own way instead. We’re faced with that same choice today. Will we live with the hope and purpose of Simeon and Anna, or will we pursue our own paths—paths that ultimately lead us away from life? Join us this Sunday at either the 8 or 11 AM service as we look at Jesus the Justifier and discover the purpose He invites each of us into. - Pastor Brandon For this week's Scripture and notes: http://bible.com/events/49533720

This is message 50 in the Isaiah series. Isaiah 52:13-53:12 The Lord reveals His Servant as the suffering Savior, rejected by men but sent for their redemption. Every detail of His sorrow, silence, and sacrifice was part of God's plan to justify sinners through His offering. Though He was bruised and numbered with transgressors, He bore the sin of many and rose victorious, securing salvation for all who believe. In Made Right, we dive into Romans 3:21-31 to understand how we are justified—not by works, but by faith in Jesus Christ. This powerful message reveals that God, in His righteousness, made a way to turn His wrath from us through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. He is both the just Judge and the gracious Justifier. Our right standing with God doesn't come through law-keeping, pride, or performance, but through the “law of faith” that levels the playing field for all—Jew and Gentile alike. When we believe, we fulfill what the law could never accomplish on its own: true righteousness through Christ alone.

We're all very good at justifying ourselves. If we act in anger, we blame it on a headache or something that happened earlier in the day. We can easily come up with some way to shift the blame from ourselves to something or even someone else. Sometimes we are successful in convincing others that we are right. But the question is what does God think of that? How can we convince him? Tune in this week to The Bible Study Hour as Dr. James Boice reminds us that God is the only Justifier.
