The label also serves as the home for Goldman's bands, Rad Company and The Raging Nathans who have built an international following through tireless touring. Goldman is also known to sling guitars on tours with The Queers and Iron Chic, while Smith manages and coordinates label business in their homebase of Dayton, Ohio.
Ohio’s Ultrasphinx, which features vocalist/guitarist Joe Dennis, previously of The Party of Helicopters and The Man I Fell In Love With, play crescendo-building, dazzling rock music that is a combination of sounds from metal, to shoegaze, to good ole indie rock. The band recently released their debut, self-titled LP, in Spring 2014. The album’s twelve tracks were recorded over a span of several months following their 2013 Midwest/East Coast tour by Black Keys/Cage The Elephant engineer Jason M. Tarulli and engineer Ben Vehorn (Strand of Oaks, Royal Bangs, Drummer, the Black Swans).
During their six or seven-year tenure, Kutztown, PA, five-piece emo outfit The Jazz June emerged during a period when the rules of the game were quickly changing. Grunge and alt-rock had come and gone, leaving their considerable mark on the MTV generation, and soon the A&R reps would be banging down the doors of ‘90s era emo bands still operating in the underground, dominating the D.I.Y. venues in both the U.S. and Europe, hoping to make them the “next big thing”. Although the Jazz June flew mostly below the radar and made left a relatively small mark on the genre when compared to some of their peers, perhaps no other one of these bands left a larger impact on Dayton, Ohio. Disbanding originally in 2002, the band has reformed a handful of times – once in 2006 and again in 2010. In October 2013 the band will again take the stage at the Topshelf Records CMJ showcase on October 19 at St. Vitus in Brooklyn.
Wright, the front man for C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks has been immersed in the Dayton music scene in numerous ways over decades. Margaret Thatcher once said, “I do not know anyone who has got to the top without hard work. That is the recipe. It will not always get you to the top, but it should get you pretty near.” Christopher Wright’s recipe is two decades in the making, and is damn near perfect. The combination of chops, fortitude and determination result in an instrumental rock band that crosses genres, decades and proclivities. In short, it’s fucking delicious...
