This week on Next on the Tee, I'm joined by two fantastic guests who bring both incredible stories and valuable insights to the show. Leading things off is John Cook, a 21-time winner across the PGA and Champions Tours and a former National Champion from his days at Ohio State. This marks John's 10th visit to the show, and every conversation with him ha been fantastic thanks to his upbeat attitude and passion for the game — you can literally hear the smile in his voice. We kick things off by talking about this year's Mexico Open, a tournament that holds special meaning for John since his father, Jim Cook, helped resurrect it back in the 1980s, and John himself went on to win it in 1995. As we continue looking ahead to this year's U.S. Open at Oakmont, John also shares his memories of competing in the 1994 U.S. Open there. We also reminisce about some of the fun team events he's played in alongside Sergio Garcia, Mark O'Meara, and Rex Caldwell. Following John, I'm excited to welcome Jeff Harper to the show for the first time. Jeff is the Director of Operations for Byler Holdings, which owns and manages five fantastic golf courses across Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. Each course presents its own unique challenge, making them the perfect progression for players as they advance their skills. Jeff takes us on a virtual tour of Broad Run Golfer's Club in West Chester, Iron Valley in Lebanon, Berkleigh Golf Club in Kutztown, Lebanon Valley in Myerstown, and Blue Mountain in Fredericksburg. With his passion for golf and knack for storytelling, Jeff brings these courses to life and highlights what makes each one special. It's a can't-miss episode for anyone looking to discover hidden gems and enjoy some great golf stories along the way.

Mokuhanga becomes a part of those who open themselves to its possibilities. It draws you in as an art form, with its seeming simplicity, and guides you on a profound journey of exploration. One of the strengths of mokuhanga as a practice is its ability to harmonize with other artistic and academic endeavors, enriching one's life in many ways.   On this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with William Mathie, a teacher and relief printmaker based in Pennsylvania. We discuss Bill's discovery of mokuhanga in the 1980s and how his academic and artistic journey in printmaking evolved, leading him to rediscover mokuhanga later in life. Bill and I delve into his personal mokuhanga teachers, his work on the Pennsylvania Print Symposium in 2006, his printmaking philosophies, his time at the First International Mokuhanga Conference in Awaji and Kyoto, and we also explore his own mokuhanga work, materials, making tools and how he views mokuhanga through an academic lens.   William Mathie - website, Instagram   Guarding The Cheese    The golden age of mokuhanga is generally considered to be during the Edo period (1603-1898), when the art of color woodcut flourished in Japan. Unless you've been listening to older episode of the GBH Podcast, you may not have heard my voice in awhile. I've been working on some new projects this past year or so that I'm excited about, but if there's one thing that pulls me out of semi-retirement each year, it's the Foeder for Thought festival in St Petersburgh Florida every March with Green Bench Brewing Company, and here we are again on the cusp of that annual gathering of wild and spontaneous beer producers gathering. This year its on Friday March 8th, and in the run-up to that event where I get to sit down and chat with a few leading producers in the category about their trajectory and the future the envision. I'm releasing last year's talks as a way to sort of get people excited again and remind them of some of the aspects of Foeder for Thought that make it so special. First of all, it's a small event but there's some serious work and care put in that makes it fantastic. Khris Johnson and his team at Green Bench pull out all the stops for this thing. They get Web's City Cellar, their companion bar, primed and ready to welcome fans of wild and spontaneous beer to what I consider one of the best beer bars in the country. And I'm certainly not alone in the opinion—this year the James Beard Awards nominated them for the Outstanding Bar category. That's big time stuff. This year they're featuring Northern California's Russian River, Threes Brewing in New York, Keeping Together in New Mexico, Suarez Family Brewery in the Hudson Valley, and The Referend Bier Blendery from Kutztown, Pennsylvania It's going to be a fantastic time - and I hope to see you there. Now, let's talk about 2023's lineup of guests that you'll hear in these episodes, hosted by myself and Good Beer Hunting's Kate Bernot. We're talking to folks from de Garde Brewing in Oregon, Fox Farm Brewery in Connecticut, Off Breed Wild Ales in Pompano Beach Florida, Primitive Beer in Colorado, and Scratch Brewing in far Southern Illinois. As per usual, it was an inspired lineup of beers and the producers behind them. All connected through their love of wild and spontaneous beer making, but also unique in their own rights—serving unique audiences and geographies, adapting to the realities of climate change and a shifting market, and finding their own way even as they hold the ancient traditions of these beers in a kind of reverent state.

On today's show, I welcome Steve Oross and Lorrie McKinley to the show. Steve Oross is an Associate Professor of psychology at Kutztown University and as listeners of this show will recall, in Fall 2021 Steve Oross was denied ADA accommodations by Kutztown University's administration. Oross had a heart transplant in February 2021. Following months of physical therapy and treatment, his doctors cleared him to return to work in Fall 2021 provided that he taught his classes online given that COVID was still rampant and would pose a significant risk to his life. Rather than providing Oross with accommodations, the administration said the only way they would allow him to return to work would be if he taught in-person. Rather than risk his life or being forced to go on unpaid leave pr losing his job, Oross decided to fight. Thanks to his determination and the amazing advocacy of his attorney, Lorrie McKinley, Oross won his case. Steve's experience has led him to wider spheres of advocacy as well. Steve is a Team Member with the World Health Network focusing on Legal Action for Policy Change. He has also become involved in the Organ Donation Awareness Corporation which is a student-led organ donation advocacy group with chapters in NYC and Nashville, Tennessee, involving other students from around the country. He will be participating in a series of webinars with this group focused on promoting organ donation among young adults. Lorrie McKinley, is one of the few lawyers in the Philadelphia area with undisputed expertise in both employment law and special education advocacy and litigation. She is a passionate, bold and creative advocate with a long track record of protecting the civil rights of employees and students under the nation's civil rights law at every level of the state and federal courts. Lorrie is widely recognized for her contributions in the employment provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act as well as her advocacy on behalf of children with special needs. Prior to entering private practice in 1997, Lorrie served as Project Head for the Employment Law Project at Community Legal Services, Inc. in Philadelphia. In 1997 she argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in a case involving constitutional due process issues for people receiving medical benefits pursuant to the Pennsylvania Workers' Compensation Act. Her work in that case is highlighted in an exhibit in the Supreme Court Section of the United States Constitution Center in Philadelphia. For over a decade, Lorrie has been selected by her peers as one of the “Best Lawyers in America.” Since 2008, she has also been listed as a “Super Lawyer” by Thompsons Reuters based on peer recognition and professional achievement. It's Short Time Shots, a look at the day's college wrestling scores and more, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer and broadcaster Jason Bryant and I want to let you know, this is the scoreboard show of record. Speaking of scoreboards, did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. NO ONE ELSE DOES THIS. Top dual of the night, No. 25 Stevens Institute knocked of No. 11 Coast Guard 18-15 in Hoboken, New Jersey. The dual had a couple of matches between ranked individuals. Coast Guard took the 133-pound match as sixth-ranked Chase Randall beat 10th-ranked Luke Hoerle 9-3. At 157, Stevens' Ryan Smith, ranked as high as fourth, topped No. 14 Noah Caskey 9-6 in a matchup between returning All-Americans. Trailing 11-6 halfway through, the Ducks won four in a row from 165-197 to ice the dual. Elsewhere in Division III, Coe bested Buena Vista 45-9 to open up action in the American Rivers Conference. Will Esmoil, L.J. Richardson and Mathieu Arsenault picked up falls for the Kohawks (with a K) and head coach John Oostendorp - he beat Rulon Gardner back in the day by the way. McDaniel beat Division II Frostburg State 30-14. No. 12 Ashland edged No. 21 Mercyhurst 20-19 on criteria. Ashland took the victory on the third criteria, most match points 77-76. This is again one of those things that makes me wonder why the heck we don't just do match points. Wade Schalles has been touting a version of it for years. Andy Hamilton and Kyle Klingman went through and came up with a system. If we're changing points in individual matches for whatever reason, why don't we just change dual meet scoring to match the output of the athletes? Kutztown pulled away from Shippensburg, winning three of the last four weights to come away with a 33-18 win in a battle of PSAC squads. The Golden Bears improved to 2-0 on the season. Emmanuel beat Emory & Henry 45-3 and San Francisco State won a Bay Area battle, topping NAIA Menlo 43-9. In the NAIA, second-ranked Life University used a squad mostly of reserves and smashed Brewton-Parker 45-9. 10th-ranked Myles Starke did get the go for Life at 184 pounds. He picked up a technical fall over Charles Henkel. All seven victories were bonus victories for the Friends University Falcons as the flew past Bethany (Kan.) 39-18. Reigning KCAC Men's Wrestler of the Week Gunnar Henderson pinned Nathaniel Zabala in 2:33, while Thomas Vasquez, Jamie Mitchell and Gustavo Renteria also got their hand raised after they had the win by pin. It was also the first dual win for new men's head wrestling coach Tyler Mies. On the women's side, Grand View beat Baker 32-8. Emmanuel beat Emory & Henry 44-2. My thoughts are with my man Chris Mecate, a past two-time All-American at that place in Norfolk and current assistant coach at Mt. San Antonio College in SoCal. Mecate's dad passed away in the past few days and I wanted to drop a line with my condolences to a guy I haven't seen in a while. December 6 was a tough one here, it would have been my late father's birthday. Mt. San Antonio and the rest of the California Community Colleges wrap up their season at Cuesta this weekend for the California Community College Athletic Association state championships - which is still on my list of events to check out. Las Vegas is on everyone's mind who follows the world of Division I wrestling and that also means me. There's a bunch of Vegas-related content in the newsletter today, so again, you can find out how to get that daily at the end of the show. I was on the mic Thursday here in the Twin Cities - more on that in a bit, this is Short Time Shots, a look at the day's results in and around college wrestling. Right now, if you hear any banging around, it's because I'm getting a new furnace installed this morning. Yup. Thankfully before it his absolute zero here this winter. Our installer used to wrestle, too. Links: Did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. As to the aforementioned Minnesota match, Division III's top-ranked team, Augsburg, blanked No. 25 Loras 46-0 at Si Melby Hall. Augsburg won four matchups between ranked wrestlers, including returning national champion Sam Stuhl earning an 11-2 major decision over No. 13 Jalen Schropp at 141 pounds. Top-ranked heavyweight Tyler Kim and 184-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann picked big bonus victories - Kim with the fall and BSO (his name is too long to keep repeating) with the tech. Other scores around Division III saw Carthage beat Elmhurst 29-15, and Central, that's it, just Central, pushed past Augustana (Ill.) 36-9. UW-Stevens Point trounced UW-Oshkoh (B'Gosh) 40-18. Augustana did beat Simpson (Iowa) The only Division I match of the night featured a pair of transitional programs as Bellarmine heads out to Missouri and beat Lindenwood 35-7. There were some exciting duals in Division II, including Kutztown winning the last five bouts to pull away past Seton Hill 34-15. Both of Kutztown's ranked wrestlers - No. 11 Dalton Gimbor at 165 and third-ranked Matthew Weinberg at 184 - won. Gimbor beat Kane Kettering while Weinberg picked up a forfeit. I hate forfeit. Millersville beat East Stroudsburg 23-19. Colorado School of Mines won the last six weights to top New Mexico Highlands 31-13. Colorado Mesa beat rival Western Colorado 24-17. Davenport beat NAIA Cleary 37-12. Down south, Coker blanked Bluefield State (that's in West Virginia), while Belmont Abbey beat Emory & Henry 48-3. Emory & Henry is transitioning from Division III to Division II. In the NAIA, Ottawa beat Avila 35-13. On the women's side, Grand View beat Central Methodist 27-18, Cedar Crest beat Alvernia 32-16 in the school's first ever home women's wrestling dual. Sioux Falls new women's program improved to 2-0 with a win over Minot State 39-13 and Lock Haven beat Elmira 35-12. Subscribe, for free, to my Daily Wrestling News. On this week's Out d'Coup LIVE we bring you a pre-recorded interview with Joslyn Diffenbaugh. Joslyn is a 10th grade student at Kutztown Area High School. She is the founder of the Teen Banned Books club and an outspoken student advocate against book bans in her school district and school districts all around the region. This past spring, the Kutztown Area School District school board canceled a grant-funded, "One School, One Book," program that planned to read Alan Gratz's new book, Two Degrees. The reason? Because a few outspoken conservative parents didn't want students reading about climate change! We had Alan Gratz on this program to talk about the controversy and Joslyn had an opportunity to interview him at the Firefly Bookstore during his visit to Kutztown University for last year's Children's Literature Conference.  This interview was conducted on October 1, 2023 as a featured event during the PA Climate Convergence in Harrsiburg. Joslyn was supposed to interview Alan Gratz, but Alan unfortunately got COVID just a few days before the event. Karen Feridun from the PA Climate Convergence asked if I would be willing to step in and interview Joslyn. I was more than happy to step up. This week I welcome Alan Gratz to the show. We'll be talking about his latest #1 New York Times bestselling young adult novel, Two Degrees and the controversy over the Kutztown Area School District's canceling their "One Book, Once School" middle school program that was set to read Two Degrees. Why did they cancel reading his book? It's a familiar story of right-wing extremism infecting our schools. Right-wing members on the school board and in the community objected to reading a book that accepted the reality and the threats posed by climate change.  On April 15th, Gratz will be one of the Featured Speakers at the 25th Annual Kutztown University Children's Literature Conference. In the wake of the decision by the Kutztown Area School District to cancel their "One School, One Book" program, he made extra time to meet with the community while in town. He will be doing two events at Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown on April 15th as well. At the evening event, he will be interviewed by Joslyn Diffenbaugh, founder of the local Teen Banned Book Club. Details for the events can be found on Firefly Bookstore's Facebook page and through the links in the show notes.  Alan Gratz is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of nineteen novels and graphic novels for young readers, including Two Degrees, Captain America: The Ghost Army, Ground Zero, Refugee, Allies, Prisoner B-3087, and Ban This Book. A Knoxville, Tennessee native, Alan is now a full-time writer living in Asheville, North Carolina with his wife and daughter. Learn more about him online at www.alangratz.com. Welcome to this week's Out d'Coup LIVE. This week I welcome Robyn Underwood to the show. Robyn leads KOFEE - Kutztown Organized for Educational Excellence which formed to push back against rising extremism on the Kutztown Area School District. The KASD middle school was planning on reading Alan Gratz's book, Two Degrees as part of their "One Book, One School" program. Two Degrees centers around the lives of four middle-school students struggling to survive disasters brought on by climate change. Right-wing members of the school board and the community didn't want students to read about climate change, so the superintendent canceled the program. We'll talk about the impact of extremism on Kutztown's middle-school and the work of KOFEE to take back their schools. Robyn Undersood has a BSc and PhD in entomology (study of insects) and specialize in honey bee research. She is the Mom of two kids who have been in the district their whole lives and are now in the high school. Robyn hesitantly began acting as an activist when she saw things she did not like happening at school board meetings. Now she leads KOFEE (Kutztown Organized for Educational Excellence). On the mid-week episode, there is some Week 5 previewing to be done. Conor and Gary take a look at the Ravens' woes heading into a showdown with Cincinnati, Jared Goff's latest shot at a Belichick defense, and whether Geno Smith Fever will continue to spread after a matchup against a very good Saints defense. But this episode is more about the future—the distant future. Therefore, Sports Illustrated college football writer Richard Johnson returns to the show to discuss the top 2023 draft quarterback contracts. Size discussions around Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud, what it means for Will Levis to play for Kyle Shanahan/Sean McVay disciples, the ripening process for Tyler Van Dyke and Anthony Richardson, and a tricky projection for Sam Hartman coming out of a unique Wake Forest offense. Plus, who tore it up against Kutztown? You'll have to listen to find out. Have a comment, critique or question for a future mailbag?
