Today I'm celebrating the 100th episode of the Speak Loud Podcast! I'm recapping some of my favorite episodes so far, and what I've learned in 100 episodes. Thank you to everyone who has reached out and sent messages about how they've resonated with the podcast. This show is for you, after all, so I always love hearing your feedback and ideas. The Speak Loud Podcast is about sharing a message of hope, but we all have to get through the dark parts to reach the light. I've learned how to use my past not as a crutch, but as a stepping stone for my future. After 22 years, my book Throwaway Girl is out this fall, and in that memoir, I cover details from Episode 1 in my own story of triumph and hope. Some of my favorite episodes have been with friends or people in my close circles. In “Speak Up and Speak Loud Against Abuse”, my talk with my aunt opened my eyes to generational trauma in my family. Scott Clover, my dear friend, and somatic healer helps clients remove emotional blockages and connect to their authentic energy in “Intuitive Trauma Healing.”Another one of my favorite episodes was “Why Resilience Matters with Em Capito.” Em was my first TedX speaker, and resilience is one of my favorite words. Resilience is about turning adversity into strength and triumphing over a challenge, which is the message I want to share on the Speak Loud Podcast. Many episodes have been deep-dives into the brain and body after trauma. “How Trauma Affects the Brain with Joe Dennis” is one of the most listened-to episodes, where Joe brings valuable insight from his career as a clinician. “How To Use Creativity to Heal from Trauma with Lauri Schoenfeld” has excellent information for finding a different outlet for your healing. In “Exploring the Complexities of Trauma”, Michelle Binion, certified mental health clinician, enlightens us on why we work the way we do after trauma. I've had great guests whose stories are full of light and hope. Rena Romano, in her episode “Overcoming Shame After Sexual Abuse,” shares how she's become a “sur-thriver” and found endless possibilities in life. If you want an uplifting episode, check out “Giving Sunshine with Jason Clawson.” Jason is a clinical therapist and father whose movement “Giving Sunshine” sends therapeutic care packages to families struggling with grief, illness, and other struggles. Thank you for tuning in and for continuing to believe in the Speak Loud message. As always, you are worthy, you are enough, and keep on shining your light. In a break from the typical episodes, hosts Brett Loftis and Evan LaPorta celebrate the 10th download of the podcast! If you are fortunate to know Joseph Dennis (aka Seph Ronden) then you know what a kind & giving person he is. Family is everything to Joe and his equally amazing family all makes cameo appearances here. If you don't know Joe, this perhaps best encapsulates his spirit. After Alisa Hinton interviewed Joe, he phoned me. He was concerned that he had not praised his fellow castmates enough. This podcast is sure to pique your interest in Three Musketeers which opens Friday February 11th.
Kindness and Chick-fil-A go together like, well, nuggets and waffle fries! We chatted with Joe Dennis, a manager at the Chick-fil-A in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Joe recently went above and beyond, helping repair an elderly guest's car during his shift. He gave us the inside scoop and you can hear all about Joe's philosophy on leadership and kindness This episode was edited by Jim Mann, Mann Made Productions. On the pod today, Joe Dennis! Certified Mental Health Counselor and Clinical Director at Mindful Counseling. He's also trained in meditation and mindfulness. You'll love Joe. Joe talks trauma and has an amazing ability to turn theory into analogies that make sense. He gives practical tools that you as a RAD parent can use right now while you're in crisis and suggestions for later. When it comes to trauma and therapy, Joe is innovative, creative, and cutting edge. Ever heard of the technique "Brain Spotting"? Fun fact: I contacted Joe to chat about his expertise as a therapist. But did you know that he just happens to have an aunt who is a foster mom and specializes in RAD? Small world! I highly recommend that you watch Joe's video clips on his social media pages (like instagram) where he offers a lot of great insight and information. I’m excited about my return guest, Joe Dennis, from episode 08 of Speak Loud Podcast. Joe is our leading referral partner here on Speak Loud Podcast. Joe blends unique meditative practices and philosophy with highly sought-after techniques such as EMDR, Brain-spotting, dream analysis, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to create insightfully inspired and lasting impacts with his clients.REBT, CBT, and DBT are forms of behavioral therapy that are commonly used in Utah. “These are useful with clients that want to form a new habit.” This approach determines how you are interpreting information and the behavior resulting from your interpretation. Joe works with clients using this approach as he finds this format more practical. “But even then, I don’t believe the behavioral approaches tend to go deep enough.”“Existential theory allows integration of other approaches,” which gives Joe and his team the ability to look at the type of trauma and the meaning associated with the trauma experienced in the individual.“When working with trauma, you’re not working with the traumatic event itself, you’re working with the meaning of it.” Joe explains how your unconscious mind processed and reacted to your trauma is the root of the issue for people.RRT therapy boasts the claim that you can heal trauma in six sessions. This therapy also works with the conscious mind, along with the unconscious mind, delving into the mammalian and the logical, adult brain. “The fact that they are so sure about [their claim] makes me fascinated by this modality.” This specific type of therapy focuses on the unconscious mind and the meaning that it attributes to an event. “Humor brings us back to the present and gives us the ability to process stuff.” Because we can’t be in the past to process traumatic events, humor gives the therapist the ability to bring them back to the present and is a grounding technique he uses in his practice.Resources MentionedVisit Joe Dennis on the webCheckout Mindful Counseling Utah ResourcesTake a look at their Mental Health WorkshopsCheck out Episode 08 with Joe DennisJoin Me on Speak Loud PlatformSpeak Loud Podcast on the webSpread the message of Speak Loudly Podcast andshare this episode with a friend!***Disclaimer: All content found on Speak Loud Podcast, including text, images, audio, or other formats were created for informational purposes only. Joe Dennis, LCMHC, is back in studio today with his new J's for one of my favorite conversations thus far on The Collin Kartchner Podcast. We discuss 9/11, how hate is not a mental illness, the despicable things TikTok does to create trauma bonding among young users, how teen mental health issues are caused in part by decision fatigue, self-determination theory, and the struggles with this new generation of young adults finding authentic identity. This episode isn't like any thus far, and Joe drops so much wisdom on issues not discussed yet on this podcast-- hope you enjoy, and share it with your struggling college-age kids too. Today, we are joined by a very special guest, Joe Dennis, who works with me at S.H.A.R.E. as a trauma counselor. Joe gives us a look into his background, and—more specifically—his work as a trauma clinician. Joe describes what he’s witnessed in his role focusing on PTSD and how trauma manifests itself. We dive into how trauma changes over time and define the types of trauma that people experience. Joe speaks into the different approaches available today to treat trauma. We talk about what tactics he’s found to be successful in overcoming trauma and achieving resiliency. As my conversation progresses with Joe, he uncovers how trauma affects the brain. Joe explains the impact trauma has, not only physically, but mentally. We go on to discuss how trauma resurfaces and manifests through triggers even after we’ve overcome physical trauma. Joe shares his own beliefs and points of consideration to overcome the experiences we go through in our pasts. With his focus in trauma, Joe is able to shed light on the different therapy techniques out there, and the benefits and pitfalls of each. He explains each clearly and provides examples that make them easily understandable. Joe also shares that his passion is so great for therapy because he experienced trauma himself and wanted to help others open the door to seek help. I ask Joe about the concept of ‘trauma bonding’. We define what this is, how to spot it, as well as how to overcome it. Joe offers rich insight and poses incredible options for individuals working to overcome trauma. “Trauma is not based in a singular event, or even a series of events, it’s based in the meanings and the beliefs around the event.” Relevant Links:Instagram @joedennis.counselsjoe@MindfulCounselingUtah.comResources Speak LOUDWrite a ReviewSHARE the Movement
This episode is awesome. This episode of Your Anxiety Toolkit was not an easy one to record. No one likes to have a conversation about suicide, but we need to. We need to have a conversation about suicide more than ever and we need to keep having these conversations until we break the stigma of suicide. Recently, one of our dear CBT School members died by suicide and our community was heartbroken. My heart was broken. Even as a therapist, I cannot prepare myself enough for the conversation about suicide. Thankfully, as we all grieve this sad loss, we are joined today by Joe Dennis to help us work through this difficult topic. Joe Dennis is the Clinical Director of Mindful Counseling in Utah with such a wonderful kind heart. In a flash, Joe agreed to join me for a conversation about suicide where he educated us about suicide and gave us some wonderful tools and resources for those who are struggling with thoughts of suicide. We also discussed tools and resources for those with a loved one who has died by suicide. Joe talked with us about why we now call it “Death by suicide” and the reasons for this terminology change. Joe also talked about the difference between passive suicidal ideation and active suicidal ideation and how to differentiate between the two. Joe and I talked about why we struggle to talk about Suicide and how Depression, anxiety, trauma, etc. play into suicidal ideation. Lastly, Joe talked about what is going through the mind of someone who is contemplating suicide and what tools/strategies/resources they can use when they are faced with this difficult time. I really hope that this podcast helps you to understand and approach suicide in a way that is less stigmatized, less shamed and less frightening. Thank you, Joe Dennis, for being on the show. This week's guest is Joe Dennis, trauma therapist. We will be going into how harming trauma truly is, no matter what kind it is. Also how we can become better in our thoughts and mindset. When Joe was younger he did not want to go into the "therapist/counsel" field. He grew up with the dream to be a doctor, a family practitioner. Went through specialized education, took bio technology, worked really hard. But even though it looked like he had it all together, he didn't. Lost himself and ended up experiencing tons of trauma symptoms that led to a suicidal episode. Eventually got help and decided to leave his childhood dream behind to do trauma therapy. Stay and listen while talks more about his story and what he has learned. ———————————————————————————————————— June 7th and 8th is the "Level Up" workshop that I will be doing with Tiffany Barnes. Sound Check Chat - A Music Lover's Podcast delivering answers straight from Artist's Lips
Ohio’s Ultrasphinx, which features vocalist/guitarist Joe Dennis, previously of The Party of Helicopters and The Man I Fell In Love With, play crescendo-building, dazzling rock music that is a combination of sounds from metal, to shoegaze, to good ole indie rock. The band recently released their debut, self-titled LP, in Spring 2014. The album’s twelve tracks were recorded over a span of several months following their 2013 Midwest/East Coast tour by Black Keys/Cage The Elephant engineer Jason M. Tarulli and engineer Ben Vehorn (Strand of Oaks, Royal Bangs, Drummer, the Black Swans).
An Iowa novelist, Joe Dennis, writes a story surrounding the '93 Flood, in "Cave of the Painter" ... then Iowans are really steamed about unlicensed and drunk drivers mushing their loved ones. Very powerful stories.
