This week T.J. and Morgan take a deep dive into the album that is a perfect snapshot of 2004 and inspired the sound of thousands of screamo bands across the globe. The boys are later joined by Hawthorne Height's frontman JT Woodruff who gives a great interview on the band's time recording this record, and tells us the never-before-told story on why there is no producer credit on this album!
My heart is in...well, you get it if you existed anywhere in the mid 2000's emo scene as Hawthorne Heights was INESCAPABLE during that time. I have the pleasure of hanging out with JT Woodruff from the band who plays guitar and is the lead singer. We have a very open and honest conversation about being corny adjacent (or sometimes, right on top of corny), playing late night shows and the legacy of the band as they enter their 20th year of playing together. JT is straight edge, loves hardcore and is such a nice dude so I was happy to get to know him a lot better during this and hope you do as well. Check out their Is For Lovers Festival as they wrap up with a few last dates this summer and plan on bringing it back next year! Baxie talks to Hawthorne Heights lead singer JT Woodfuff. For the last 21 years Hawthorne Heights has released seven albums (two of which have gone gold), they've also released a number of hit singles amidst tragedy, management problems, and a worldwide pandemic! In spite of all of that, Hawthorne Heights has endured and continues to tour. This Summer the band has organized the incredibly unique eight-city For Lovers Festival tour. They'll wrap up this tour on September 17th in Mansfield, Massachusetts with Alkaline Trio, Rise Against, and many more. We talk about the music, the tour, Emo, and about some of the band's struggles. Wickedly interesting stuff! You can listen on every major podcast platform in the universe and on the Rock102 website. Labeled: "The Stories, Rumors, & Legends of Tooth & Nail Records"
JT Woodruff is one of the most intentional and efficient leaders and operators in the history of the scene. His band Hawthorne Heights has had absolutely huge ups and downs. Ups like their first 2 records going gold and creating one of the most iconic emo songs ever, Ohio Is For Lovers, which has almost 100 million Spotify plays. The downs include a lengthy, costly lawsuit with their label as well as the death of a best friend and bandmate, Casey Calvert, in 2007. Hawthorne Heights has handled their career incredibly well, racking up over 20 years of successful continuous activity while continuing to innovate, adapt, and grow as people and as a band. JT is one of the most principled people i know, and his values and principles have guided him well across the spectrum from the smallest details of being punk and DIY to large scale business moves like creating the ...Is For Lovers Festival which is becoming wildly successful.
