Philadelphia hardcore band Soul Glo put out one of the best records of 2022: Diaspora Problems. It made it on many "best of" lists, Jeff Rosenstock tweeted about how amazing it was and the band My Chemical Romance invited Soul Glo to open for them. But, what we've learned as the group have transitioned from a DIY punk band to being one of the names constantly referenced in the current hardcore reconnaissance is that they like ska. So we brought on bassist GG Guerra to discuss the genre. He talks about his love for Arrogant Sons of Bitches, specifically their landmark record, Three Cheers For Disappointment. We also discuss Folly--Soul Glo singer Pierce Jordan participated in a cover of Folly's song "Broken" with members of Catbite, We Are The Union, The Best of the Worst and Gouge Away for 2 Minutes to Late Night. We also talked about Soul Glo's love for JER. GG assures us that at some point in the near future, we can expect a JER/Soul Glo collaboration. We talk about so much more. Ska Against Racism, GG's Choking Victim tattoo, GG's old ska band, signing to Epitaph, how the film Whiplash inspired the idea for the video for "Jump!! (Or Get Jumped!!!) ((by the future))" and we dig deep into the recording of Soul Glo's Diaspora Problems. Plus Adam reveals the name of Atomic Garden Recording Studio's owner Jack Shirley's old ska band!PickinnputtinPickinnputtin-Music and golf with guests from both worlds. If you were confronted with a life or death situation, how do you think you would respond? Would you bear down and deal with the circumstances and worry about the consequences later? How would you respond emotionally? Would you pray?My guest today, Charles Cure of the brutal New York based sludge metal band, HUSH, encountered such an experience. For Charles, his experiences were life changing, but affirming all at the same time. Charles knows what he wants and nothing was going to get in the way of the bigger picture. The details of this moment are explained in greater detail in the show today, so prepare for the unexpected. I didn't see this coming at all. This is my intimate chat with Charles Cure of Hush, and this is Rockstar Superhero.----------------Time Codes: 3:00 Growing up in Hudson New York7:50 Maturing adults and the project of music11:00 Crazy car accidents14:40 Surviving the brush with death18:20 Yes, that really happened21:40 Accepting vulnerability25:10 The deepest parts of our humanity28:30 The coolest pastor in the world30:00 The life of Charles Cure33:00 Messing with life and suicide36:30 The difficult conversations around depression39:40 Understanding the edge of darkness43:00 Capabilities notwithstanding46:20 The Pornography of Ruin49:50 What does your message say about you?53:00 What are you in love with?56:40 Weighed down by the worldHUSH:Jordan Cozza – bass/guitarJason Tash – bassJeff Andrews – guitarMark O'brien – drumsCharles Cure – vocalshttps://hushdoom.bandcamp.comhttps://twitter.com/HUSHdoomhttps://www.facebook.com/hushdoomhttps://www.instagram.com/hushdoomhttps://linktr.ee/hushdoomHudson, New York-based crust-influenced sludge outfit HUSH unveils their third full-length release, The Pornography Of Ruin.HUSH is formed by veterans of indie and underground bands from disparate corners of the scene and currently includes former members of From Ashes Rise, Self Defense Family, Aficionado, Endicott, and others. The Pornography Of Ruin showcases a more expanded view of their established sound by embracing more melodic elements, intense dynamic shifts, and previously unexplored vocal and atmospheric textures within each composition. Thematically, the record focuses on the concept of personal destruction and transformation; drawing heavily from vocalist/lyricist Charles Cure's experiences in the aftermath of a 2016 car accident that left him hospitalized and unable to walk for several months.Cure elaborates, “At the time the first song for this album was written, I was struggling to relearn how to put one foot in front of the other and confronting major personal transformations on both mental and physical levels. By the time the last song was completed, the world had become destabilized by a global pandemic as well as political upheaval and violence. With past HUSH material, we had always tried to write songs that captured a sense of impending disaster at a macro/abstract level, but at a remove from our personal lives. With The Pornography Of Ruin, given the environment we found ourselves in, that approach didn't seem useful anymore so we took those same ideas and personalized them on a deep level. I think the songs really communicate the feelings of helplessness and loss that were pretty universal to our experience of the last few years.”The Pornography Of Ruin was engineered at the band's studio; HOVVL Audio Environment in Hudson, New York by frequent collaborator Ryan Slowey and was mastered by Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden in Oakland, California. The cover was created with photography by an urban explorer Adrian Ledezma and design by Charles Hush. Fans of Disembowelment, Corrupted, Samothrace, Grief, and Mouth Of The Architect, take note. The Pornography Of Ruin will see release on June 24th, released digitally and on CD by the band, on cassette via Sludgelord Records, with plans for a vinyl release to follow. The release of The Pornography Of Ruin will see HUSH embarking on its first live shows since 2018 on a short Mid-Atlantic/Northeast run with their friends in New Jersey doom band Cowardice in late June being solidified. Watch for updates on that and additional live news to followIn their ten years together as a band, HUSH has become one of New York's most sonically punishing musical exports. During that time, they have produced two LP's and two EP's worth of acerbic sludge covered in a layer of ‘90s crust and infused with flourishes of atmospheric post-metal, earning them a loyal following in extreme metal circles. In a live setting, the band has developed a reputation for a kinetic onslaught, delivering huge waves of distortion through a wall of amplifiers accompanied by a primitive rhythmic churn that has at times featured two drummers simultaneously pummeling the towering riffs into submission.HUSH muscled their way onto the scene in 2014 with the release of their first self-released LP titled Unexist, and then proceeded to solidify their sound with the sparser and bleaker aesthetic of 2016's Nihil Unbound EP, released as a collaboration between Dullest Records, Silent Pendulum Records, and Fuzz Records. Their most recent recorded offering was the 2018 LP Untitled II released via UK label Sludgelord Records, with the album comprising two tracks of material from writing sessions for Nihil Unbound as well as a reimagined and rerecorded version of their first EP, 2012's Untitled I.In the years since the recording and release of Untitled II, the band has endured several lineup shifts that resulted in limited live outings, but the group remained focused on producing a follow-up record that would surpass their previous efforts on every front. To accomplish this, founding member Jordan Cozza built a recording studio in a barn in Hudson, New York and the group began shaping songs that would refine and encapsulate the ideas they had been pursuing since their inception. The result of these labors is the 2022 LP, The Pornography Of Ruin.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/rockstar-superhero--4792050/support.

If you've read any of the press that came out surrounding LA hardcore band Sweat's debut LP, "Gotta Give It Up," you've probably noticed that the common theme throughout is that Sweat aren't a typical hardcore band. They've got a sound and a style and a swagger that are unique; hardcore, for sure, but with riffs and rhythms that range from thrashy to chunky to 70s rock (think Think Lizzy). At the center of the activity is the firebrand that is Tuna Tardugno. It's abrasive and confrontational and a whole lot of fun.  We caught up for a super fun conversation with Tuna about the band's history (they've only got nine gigs under their collective championship belts, a byproduct of the band's formation less than a year prior to the world shutting down) and recording with Grammy-nominated producer Jack Shirley and their upcoming plans (tour? new album?). We also talked a lot about Tuna's introduction to the world of punk and hardcore in upstate New York and the parallels between the DIY punk and wrestling communities, both of which are near and dear to Tuna's heart. Oh, did we mention Tuna's a wrestler as well? Admittedly, my knowledge of modern wrestling is actually more limited than my knowledge of hardcore, which is pretty effing limited in its own right. Still, I am from the same hometown as Paul "Triple H" Levesque, so maybe I can hold my own a little. Anyway, this was a super fun conversation. Hope you dig it.   Order "Gotta Give It Up" here: https://shop.piratespressrecords.com/products/sweat-gotta-give-it-up-lp Order Sweat's debut EP here: https://vitriolrecords.bandcamp.com/album/sweat-s-t Sweat videos: "Joke's On Me" - https://youtu.be/hBoWvRItbAw "Hit And Run" - https://youtu.be/uoX_OrpDAVU Oh, and here's the video Tuna and I were talking about with Mackie on drums. turns out the song was Charles and Eddie's "Would I Lie To You," which somehow is from 1992, not 1964. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANL1tk0Qy9Q

This week, Andy is joined by Jack Shirley, owner and engineer at Atomic Garden Studios in Oakland, CA. He has engineered, produced and mastered records for a dynamic group of artists, everyone from Jeff Rosenstock to Deafheaven to Western Addiction and all sorts of bands in-between. Also a musician himself, Jack cut his teeth in the post-hardcore band Comadre, who released 4 albums in their tenure and toured all over the U.S. and Japan. Most recently, he has been performing with the bands Everybody Row and Dangers. As a producer and engineer, Jack Shirley tends to take a more hands off approach, not unlike another well known engineer/producer - Steve Albini. He tends to let the music come together more organically rather than spending a ton of time on production just for the sake of production, though he'll certainly offer his opinion when asked for it. There have been several albums that he has worked on that have landed on a grip of 'Best Of' lists such as Deafheaven's Sunbather & New Bermuda, as well as Jeff Rosenstock's No Dream & POST-. In this episode, I speak with Jack Shirley, a musician, an audio engineer, producer, and owner of The Atomic Garden studio in Oakland California. Jack is probably best known for his work with the band, Deafheaven, whose sophomore album, Sunbather was named Best New Music by Pitchfork. He has also recorded and produced bands like Loma Prieta, Gouge Away, Joyce Manor and countless others, including my band, Jeromes Dream. He was a founding member of the punk band Comadre and now plays guitar in Dangers! We talk about his beginnings with recording, the Oakland punk scene, work/life balance, and using ACDC's Back In Black as a sonic reference point for all his recordings. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/microspy/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/microspy/support
