Chris Hagenow and John Hendrickson are back in the Hendrickson Library with a packed episode covering Iowa's fast-moving post-primary political landscape. Both gubernatorial candidates have now selected their running mates: Rob Sand tapped Dave Muhlbauer, a farmer from western Iowa, while Zach Lahn chose State Representative Derek Wulf of Black Hawk County, also a farmer. Chris and John break down the strategy behind each pick, why Wulf stands out as a particularly strong choice for Lahn, and what the selection of two agricultural running mates signals about where both campaigns think the race will be won.The conversation turns to the broader general election dynamics shaping up between Lahn and Sand. Chris and John assess how quickly the Republican Party has consolidated around Lahn, the head start Sand's campaign has built toward a general election operation, and how the scrutiny of a real general election contest may complicate Sand's carefully constructed moderate image. A Republican Party audio drop this week — featuring Sand openly calling for political retribution on judicial nominations — gives the Lahn campaign exactly the kind of contrast material it needs to make the "governor for all Iowans" sell a harder one for Sand. The second half of the episode takes up two policy-driven stories. First, the final report on Iowa's Universal Basic Income pilot — a project run through several central Iowa cities that distributed $500 monthly stipends to participants. The report's conclusions, citing reduced stress and improved "sense of mattering," prompt a pointed exchange about what government is actually for, who's paying, and why local governments have no business engineering social outcomes with taxpayer dollars. Chris and John connect this directly to Iowa's property tax problem and the fiscal absurdity of local governments playing philanthropist. Finally, a Des Moines Register story on the city of Des Moines reconsidering its tax incentive programs — including TIF and property tax abatements — gives Chris and John a chance to explore when these tools have merit and when they're simply political ribbon-cutting at taxpayer expense.0:13 Welcome & housekeeping2:24 Trivia: Laddie Boy & Smoot-Hawley5:01 Correction & running mate announcements5:52 Sand picks Muhlbauer, Lahn picks Derek Wulf8:22 Why Wulf is a strong pick for Lahn10:32 GOP consolidation & Lahn's general election ramp-up12:22 Sand's media advantage and the contrast campaign ahead13:37 Sand audio drop & turning him into a generic Democrat14:34 Andy Beshear visits Iowa — 2028 implications15:32 Iowa's UBI pilot: background and ITR's role18:15 Dissecting the report — who pays for "feeling mattered"?21:22 UBI, local government overreach, and property taxes25:59 Des Moines reconsiders TIF and tax incentives28:05 When incentives work — and when they're ribbon-cutting30:33 Free market vs. government-directed development33:28 Sign off

The first walkout at a U.S. beef slaughterhouse in four decades follows accusations from union officials that the company retaliated against workers and committed other unfair labor practices. They said the company offered wage increases of less than 2% annually, which is below Colorado's inflation rate. Union officials said 99% of the plant's 3,800 unionized workers voted to strike. More than 2,600 showed up at the picket line by early Monday afternoon and others were expected to check in over coming days. The union said its workers perform some of the most difficult and dangerous jobs in the country and deserve higher wages and better health care. It said JBS in many cases has charged workers $1,100 or more to offset the company's expenses for personal protective equipment. The strike comes at a 75-year low in U.S. cattle numbers, with a Jan. 1 inventory of 86.2 million animals — down 1% from the prior year. The decline has been driven in part by drought and low prices offered to ranchers. Meanwhile, beef prices have soared to record levels. President Donald Trump's tariffs on Brazil, a major beef exporter, have also curbed imports. Pressed to act on “affordability” issues after Republican losses last November, Trump accused foreign-owned companies of driving up U.S. beef prices and asked the Department of Justice to investigate. The price for 100% ground chuck beef more than doubled over the past two decades from $2.55 to $6.07 per pound, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increase has added to economic anxiety in the U.S. The Trump administration has promoted a trade deal with Argentina in efforts to lower prices for food, including beef. According to a livestock market adviser for industry consultant Ever Ag, the Greeley plant has about 6% of the total U.S. beef slaughterhouse capacity. The markets are seeing red as a wild earnings week takes center stage. From the "Tale of Two Techs" (Microsoft vs. Meta) to a massive volatility spike, the All-Star Panel breaks down the trades, the trends, and the unusual activity lighting up the tape. Plus, we dive into the "other" Wolf and an Argentinian oil play. The All-Star Panel Mark Longo: CEO and Founder of the Options Insider Media Group. Henry "The Flowmaster" Schwartz: Vice President of Institutional Derivatives at Cboe Global Markets. "Uncle" Mike Tosaw: Wealth Manager at St. Charles Wealth Management. Trading Block: A Sea of Red and Earnings Chaos The panel discusses a volatile Thursday session with the S&P 500 seeing a 100-handle range. While tech takes a hit, other sectors like energy and financials are showing resilience. The Tale of Two Ms: Comparing the diametrically opposite reactions to Meta (META) and Microsoft (MSFT) earnings. META: Stock up ~10%; those who bought the 700-strike calls for $11 are seeing massive wins. MSFT: Stock down ~12% (a $58 drop); the same call-buying strategy was a total wipeout. Tesla (TSLA) Tumbles: Down over 2% as the market reacts to a shift in focus toward robotics and AI over traditional EV growth. Small Cap Update: Henry Schwartz notes that while the Russell 2000 (IWM) is outperforming YTD (up 6%), historically, this "value over growth" rotation rarely sticks. VIX Volatility: VIX flirting with an 18 handle. Notable paper includes a massive 50,000 lot of the April 80 calls trading for $0.36. The Odd Block: Unusual Activity in WULF and YPF The Flowmaster identifies massive directional bets in two very different names. 1. TeraWulf (WULF) A Bitcoin-related name seeing a $3 million directional bet. The Trade: Buyer of 36,000 Feb 16 Calls (Average price: $0.82). Context: This is a massive sweep that creates the largest regular listed position in the name, likely betting on M&A rumors or a Bitcoin rebound. 2. YPF Sociedad Anonima (YPF) An Argentinian energy ADR seeing unusual size. The Trade: Buyer of 9,999 April 43 Calls. The "Conspiracy": Why 9,999 instead of 10,000? Henry suggests it might be to dodge block scanners set for five-digit minimums. Mail Block: Listener Perspectives Question of the Week: How are you trading this earnings week? Current Results: 44% are selling premium to "live the dream," while the rest are split between buying "juice," trading 0DTE, or staying on the sidelines. VIX Poll: 75% of listeners would rather sell the April 80 calls for $0.36 than buy them. Around the Block: What to Watch Apple (AAPL) Earnings: Reporting after the bell. The market is pricing in a 4% move—roughly double its historical average. Sector Rotations: Watching if the energy (XLE) and industrial (CAT) strength can offset the tech drag. Silver (SLV): Uncle Mike highlights silver's insane run, outperforming the S&P by 8x last year and up 60% this year.
2. In eighteenth-century America, genealogy was more than a simple record of family ties—it was a powerful force that shaped society. Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America (Oxford UP, 2025) by Dr. Karin Wulf delves into an era where individuals, families, and institutions meticulously documented their connections. Whether driven by personal passion or mandated by churches, local governments, and courts, these records appeared in diverse forms-from handwritten notes and account books to intricate silk threads and enduring stone carvings.Family connections wielded significant influence across governmental, legal, religious, cultural, and social spheres. In the American context, these ties also defined the boundaries of slavery and freedom, with a child's status often determined by their mother, despite the prevailing patriarchy. This book reveals the profound importance of genealogy that was chronicled by family records, cultural artifacts, and court documents. These materials, created by both enslaved individuals seeking freedom and founding fathers seeking status, demonstrate the culturally and historically specific nature of genealogical interest.Even as the American Revolution transformed society, the significance of genealogy endured. The legacy of lineage from the colonial period continued to shape the early United States, underscoring the enduring importance of family connections. Lineage offers a deep understanding of genealogy as a foundational element of American history, illuminating its vital role from the colonial era through the birth of the nation. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. We're doing something a little different this week, heading down to record on location at Wulf's Fish in the Seaport. Richard Taylor and Desiree Antczak (Wulf's) and Bill Mantia (John Mantia & Sons) share their insights on Boston's seafood industry — how it has evolved, what it means to the city, and how it endures next to some of the priciest real estate in the country. Today we had our producer from Network Radio, on to kick us off for the new year. We talked about a variety of topics briefly, from the Truth Social post featuring Dr. Scheuer that President Trump shared, to the Porsche that Col. Mike has requested from the president, as well as the state of the Union. A little whopper of an Easter egg surprise coming this year is the speaker of the house Mike Johnson and his involvement in the corruption scandal surrounding folks like Tim Walz. We also are happy to announce some of our upcoming guest such as Dr. Cynthia McKinney, Ron Paul, Mel (Village Crazy Lady), Sam Parker, Ken O'Keefe, Syrian Girl, Jack Maxey... to name a few. "Critical minerals and materials…are essential for key economic and national security technologies that help to fuel great sectors in the United States and around the world…We're at a very interesting point in the United States for critical minerals and materials because the US Geological Survey… just released their draft version of their newly updated critical minerals list…(But) they're very difficult to come by. And for a lot of these materials, they are mined as byproducts and co-products. They're used in incredibly low volumes, and so it's very difficult for companies to sort of make money on producing them, which in the United States, of course, to get anybody to do anything they need to be able to make a profit…China has been able to dominate this space and establish a stranglehold over many of these types of supply chains for these different commodities." Abby Wulf on Electric Ladies Podcast Critical minerals are foundational to all our technologies, from computers to automobiles, weaponry and national security, among others, but they are also scarce and difficult to procure, especially in the volumes needed. So, what are they and what can we do? Listen to Abby Wulf, a top critical minerals expert who recently left the Department of Energy as head of Critical Minerals in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. Abby previously served as the founding Executive Director of the Center for Critical Minerals at the nonprofit SAFE. You'll hear about: ● What critical minerals are, what makes them "critical," and where they come from. ● How critical mineral supplies, and therefore the technologies that we rely on every day, are procured and affected by geopolitical dynamics, including Ukraine and China. ● U.S. sources of these minerals and the financial incentives that were in the Inflation Reduction Act & Infrastructure Act that helped grow the sector….and so much more. ● Plus, career advice, such as: "I think that there doesn't necessarily have to be a trade-off between making money and making a difference….I've just been trying to say yes, to every opportunity that has come my way. …There are going to be different fits and starts and seasons to your career. But the one thing that's sort of driven me more than salary even I would say, are really just experiences… There are so many different things to learn…so I've let my curiosity sort of drive where my next career move has gone…. There's no comfort in the growth zone and no growth in the comfort zone." Abby Wulf on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. "MCHD has been hyper-focused on recording video laryngoscopy over the past year. Why?" Join the podcast crew to discuss recent EMS airway literature that helps us answer these questions and provides invaluable tips. This is part one of a two-part series. REFERENCES 1. TeraWulf (WULF) tapped highs it hasn't seen since early 2022 after Alphabet (GOOGL) tapped the company for a joint data center venture for Google Cloud. As George Tsilis notes, it's the latest Bitcoin mining company to get tapped for data center buildout and offers TeraWulf a huge boost for its balance sheet. He explains why smaller companies are being tapped by tech giants like Alphabet and how this deal compares to rising small and mid-cap players like CoreWeave (CRWV).======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.
