James & Alex bring you a classic ATP recapping a promising 1-0 win away at London Stadium. A wonderful joint tribute to Bill Kenwright was followed by a gritty, physical display from both sides. Dyche's Blues were happy to allow West Ham the majority of possession and executed the plan to near perfection. They break down stats in important stages of the match, key tactical battles, and many positive performances. Finally, many wonderful contributions from our listeners in post-match comments. Today I talk again with Jesse Short about his time in Weston and the allegations brought up against James Alex of Beach Slang by manager Charlie Lowe.
On this solo episode I talk a lot about mental health. My personal struggles of not being able to do the healthy things I love to do because of the pandemic & how that’s weighing me down. I spend most of the episode talking about the fallout of the band Beach Slang after the band’s manager Charlie Lowe made allegations of mental abuse & the circumstances that led to front man James Alex checking into an inpatient facility after attempting to take his life. Our guest for episode 13 of our second series is the musician, James Alex. James is best known for his work with the punk rock band, Beach Slang, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US. They've released two studio albums - as well as one under the name Quiet Slang - with another on the way in the early part of 2020. James is, unsurprising, a massive Elliott Smith fan. In this interview, he talks about his at times academic approach to understanding Elliott's lyrics, as well as the impact his chosen song pick has had on his life. Following the chat with James, we have a listener pick from Matt Tregortha from Birmingham in the UK. Hope you enjoy it. Outside of the empirical truism that 'Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas' is an amazing song title (and that's not even arguable), Beach Slang are a study in certain contrasts and other constant consistencies. Lead singer James Alex fronts a punk act chiefly constructed of members half his age, and for all of his lyrical angst, his spins around the block have brought some noted success. There have been seriously noted (and politely discussed) brushes with the law, the band has broken up onstage and requested immediate refunds for the audience, and yet, somehow, they not only continue -- but manage to wax prolific. I chose The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us not because it was their current record (it isn't), but because it seemed to be the exclamation point on a band recklessly rising toward something. Or maybe rising beyond something. Tune in and find out what that is exactly. (Got an idea for something we should cover? Shoot it over to messagesomebody@gmail.com)
November 4, 2016 during the inaugural Sound on Sound Fest in Sherwood Forest/McDade Texas, James Alex of Beach Slang spoke with Steven D. Powell. Topics include the medieval themes of SOS Fest, the new album "A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings", and how the Navy tried to recruit him to make bombs. www.facebook.com/beachslang www.facebook.com/powellstevend
The music of Philadelphia's Beach Slang alludes to a feeling of youth and vulnerability. Sounding equal parts punk and pop, their similarity to artists such as The Replacements can't be denied, but they're fully rooted in the present. Now Beach Slang find themselves at a crossroads. Shortly after drummer JP Flexner left the band, guitarist Ruben Gallego was fired amid controversy. Committed to carrying on, frontman James Alex has embarked on a tour supporting "A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings" performing by himself. Recently Alex told fans on Facebook "If you come to a show, know that it's going to be just me, my electric guitar and my amplifier—loud and loose and unyielding."
Rock & roll is a world that rarely gives second chances - so, when James Alex decided to give it another go-around, few could have predicted that he'd immediately strike gold with Beach Slang; who have gone on to become one of the most hyped indie-rock bands on the planet. It came some 20 years after Alex originally broke into the world of music with Weston, a cult pop-punk outfit for which he played guitar - and yet, their worlds are completely different, yet more closely aligned than you might think. In July, Alex made his maiden voyage to Australia with Beach Slang as a part of the massive line-up for Splendour in the Grass. Upon arriving in Sydney, he took some time out in the foyer of his hotel room to share his unique, unexpected and eventful story. Beach Slang has wowed critics and audiences alike with its loud, energy filled live performances and unabashedly earnest lyrics. But in front of a live audience at the Goose Island Tap Room, Beach Slang songwriter James Alex strips away the volume, but not the heart, for an intimate acoustic performance and conversation with hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot. Plus, the new record by Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers, and the story behind a forgotten garage classic.
