Send me a messageMost supply chains talk about AI and automation. Meanwhile, many yards are still running on pen, paper, radio calls, and chaos. In this episode of the Resilient Supply Chain Podcast, I'm joined by Adam Newsome, CEO of Lazer Logistics, Blaine Dirker, CTO at Lazer and leader of Yard Nexus, and Pini Usha, CEO of Buffers AI, to unpack one of the most overlooked bottlenecks in modern logistics: the yard. And this matters far more than most companies realise. We explore why yard operations have become a critical pressure point for supply chain resilience, visibility, labour efficiency, and operational performance. You'll hear how fragmented data, disconnected systems, and poor forecasting ripple across transport, warehousing, inventory, and customer service. We also break down why yard automation may actually be harder than autonomous trucking because of the sheer number of constantly changing variables happening simultaneously in confined spaces. You might be surprised to learn how many facilities still rely heavily on clipboards, spreadsheets, and manual processes despite massive investment in digital transformation elsewhere in the supply chain. Kismet: Lazer manages more than 30 million trailer moves annually across North America, so the operational realities discussed here are happening at enormous scale, not in theory. If you care about supply chain resilience, logistics visibility, operational risk, AI, automation, labour challenges, or execution under pressure, this episode connects the dots in a very practical way.

"AI was going to get better at technical skills like coding and data analysis much faster than storytelling, because it's much easier to objectively define what is correct code. With storytelling, it's much more ephemeral. AI researchers have called it absurd, trying to quantify what good storytelling is." — Joe LazerWhen ChatGPT launched, the headlines were brutal. Storytellers were cooked, creative work was done, they all said. Joe Lazer did what any good journalist would do: he started asking questions. What he found, after two years of salons, research, and interviews with AI developers and future-of-work researchers, was the exact opposite. In this episode, Joe breaks down why AI will make storytelling the most important skill in the new economy.Joe is the co-founder of Contently, author of the new book Super Skill, and one of the sharpest thinkers on the intersection of AI and human-centered storytelling. We get into the neuroscience of why storytelling makes us better at leadership, persuasion, and collaboration; why heavy AI reliance causes a measurable 17% drop in skill mastery; and how to avoid the "vortex of mid" that's pulling most brands toward mediocrity. We also get real about how both of us actually use AI day-to-day, and where we draw the line.In this episode, you will learn to:Understand why AI raises the value of storytelling rather than replacing itRecognize how heavy AI reliance causes measurable skill atrophyAvoid the vortex of mid and stay out of generic AI-flavored contentApply the Unlock, Unleash, and Upgrade framework from Super SkillBuild audience trust through transparency about your AI useLinks & ResourcesFollow Joe Lazer:Website → https://www.joelazer.comBook → Super Skill by Joe Lazer → https://amzn.to/4ublf3WSubstack → Subscribe for a signed copy → https://www.joelazer.com/subscribeCompany → Contently → https://www.contently.comTool Referenced → Verify My Writing → https://www.verifymywriting.comNewsletter Referenced → Rachel Karten (Link in Bio) on SubstackPerson Referenced → Shane SnowConference Referenced → State of the Story by Storytelling360For more storytelling tips and strategies, visit:Website → https://rainbennett.comPodcast → https://thestorytellinglabpodcast.comOr follow along at:TikTok → https://www.tiktok.com/@chiefstorytellingofficerTwitter/X → https://twitter.com/rainbennettInstagram → https://www.instagram.com/rainbennettFacebook → https://www.facebook.com/thestorytellinglabYouTube → https://www.youtube.com/@RainBennett Hosted on Acast. The shoe that went sub-2: The science of super shoes with Dr. Shalaya Kipp

Every sport has had its watershed moment when a new technology upends the landscape and redefines what's possible. Baseball had torpedo bats, swimming the Lazer swimsuits, road cycling the introduction of aerodynamic carbon frames and in running we are living through an era defined by what were first, and best, described as “super shoes.”  For the last decade, the shoe industry has gone into overdrive to create shoes capable of blending impossible lightness with unbelievable energy return. The holy grail sought by shoe designers in this footwear arms race: crafting the pair of shoes that would propel the first man in history to a sub 2-hour marathon performance.  As of Sunday, we are now officially living in the new sub-2 era, as not one, but two men, Kenya's Sabastian Sawe and Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha, tore down the two-hour marathon barrier at last weekend's London Marathon.  While every factor imaginable aligned perfectly for these two men to take the sport somewhere no one has gone before, one factor in particular has drawn the lion's share of attention: the shoes. Both Sawe and Kejelcha ran in the just-released adidas Adios Pro Evo 3, a shoe touted as the lightest, fastest super shoe ever created. This week on The Shakeout Podcast we're diving into what makes these super shoes so super, and what physiological factors they impact that have helped runners achieve times long-thought impossible. To make sense of it all is Olympian and Mayo Clinic exercise physiologist Dr. Shalaya Kipp, a leading thinker in the science of shoe innovation. As one of the first researchers to quantify the running economy-improving benefits of super shoes, Shalaya reveals to us what specific factors are at play in these record-breaking shoes, how our bodies respond to these factors over the marathon distance and why runners of lesser ability might actually benefit the most from this new era of shoe tech.  Subscribe to The Shakeout Podcast feed on Apple, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you find your podcasts.

Why Storytelling Is the Super Skill of the AI Age, With Joe Lazer

Health Marketing Collective

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2026 39:50 Transcription Available

Today's episode dives into one of the most pressing topics in marketing and leadership today: the impact of AI on the creative and marketing professions, and why storytelling is more essential than ever. Host Sara Payne is joined by Joe Lazer, Chief Marketing Officer at Pepper and author of the new book, Super Skill: Why Storytelling is the Superpower of the AI Age. Joe's work has been featured in outlets including Fast Company, Forbes, Adweek, and Digiday, and he brings firsthand experience navigating the seismic shifts in content creation caused by generative AI.In this lively and insightful conversation, Sara and Joe tackle head-on the anxieties marketing leaders feel about AI. From the moment ChatGPT launched, writers, marketers, and creatives everywhere asked if their jobs would soon disappear. But Joe flips that narrative on its head. Drawing on neuroscience, evolutionary history, and today's marketing trends, he argues that the uniquely human skill of storytelling is not just irreplaceable but actually more valuable than ever in an AI-powered world. The episode explores why trust and authenticity are emerging as the most scarce and important resources as AI-generated “slop” floods the web, and why people increasingly connect with brands through real, vulnerable stories told by actual humans. Joe lays out the case for building a “creator culture” within organizations, where brand's people, not just their logos, are the new engines of marketing excellence.Thank you for being part of the Health Marketing Collective, where strong leadership meets marketing excellence. The future of healthcare (and marketing!) depends on it.Key Takeaways:Storytelling Is a Superpower in the Age of AI: When AI drives the cost of mediocre content to zero, only truly human, deeply authentic stories will break through. Speaker A explains that the value of real storytelling will rise not fall as AI-generated content proliferates. Storytelling's roots in human experience, emotion, and connection simply can't be faked by algorithms, and this advantage is backed by neuroscience and evolutionary biology.Trust is the Ultimate Competitive Advantage: As AI blurs the line between truth and fiction online, trust not just content becomes the real scarce commodity. Sharing authentic stories, especially those rooted in vulnerability, remains the fastest way humans build trust. Speaker A notes that storytelling triggers biologically-embedded mechanisms, such as the release of oxytocin, that foster empathy and genuine human connection. The Age of Institutional Brand-Building is Over. Welcome to the Creator Economy: Authority is rapidly shifting from institutions to identifiable individuals. The most engaging content now comes from real people, executives or employees whose stories mirror the values and challenges of their audiences. Social algorithms heavily favor posts from individuals over faceless organizations, driving engagement and conversions exponentially higher.Vulnerability is Powerful Even (and Especially) on Professional Platforms: The “dinner party from hell” experience on LinkedIn, saturated with self-congratulatory “success” stories, only highlights what most brands and professionals get wrong. The real connection (and effective leadership) comes from embracing vulnerable, honest storytelling about hardship, growth, failures, and real life. This not only opens the door for others to reciprocate but forges genuine relationships and opportunities for help and collaboration.Storytelling is a Habit And It's Everyone's Job: Speaker A insists storytelling shouldn't be considered a niche or “soft” marketing skill, but a daily discipline and core competency for everyone, from the boardroom to the front lines. He encourages companies to actively nurture storytelling talent, train staff across roles, and build creator rosters. Building the daily habit of sharing stories offline and online hones the muscle of communication, empathy, and innovation, driving leadership and marketing excellence in the rapidly-evolving, AI-laden landscape. If today's conversation resonated with you, we encourage you to check out Joe's new book, Super Skill: Why Storytelling is the Superpower of the AI Age. #561: Why Storytelling Is the One Skill AI Can Never Replace, with Joe Lazer

What if the skill that made us human is the same one that will keep us relevant in the age of AI? Joe Lazauskas — CMO of Pepper, co-founder of Contently, and author of Super Skill: Why Storytelling Is the Superpower of the AI Age — spent five years inside AI companies researching exactly that question. His answer: storytelling isn't just surviving the AI revolution. It's the one skill the machines can't replicate. In this conversation with host Park Howell, Joe reveals why AI slop is flooding the web and driving up the value of authentic human voices, the four story elements — relatability, ease, novelty, and tension — that make any audience stop and listen, and how to use AI as a creative amplifier without ever letting it replace your voice. In this episode, I'm diving into Super Skill by Joe Lazer, specifically the chapter titled "Lead Through Stories." Stories are one of the most effective tools for leaders to communicate vision, values, and lessons in a way that resonates emotionally with their team. Unlike facts and data alone, stories create memorable narratives that people can connect with on a personal level, making complex ideas easier to understand and remember. Sharing authentic stories—including challenges and failures—helps leaders build deeper trust and rapport with their teams. Every leader should develop a repertoire of stories that illustrate their core principles and the behaviors they want to model (yes, even solopreneurs and solo creators). This chapter reminded me that leadership isn't just about directives and strategy—it's about connection. The stories we tell shape how people understand our vision and motivate them to take action. I'm thinking about what stories from my own experience I can share more intentionally to inspire and guide others. You might also like Banana Ball by Jesse Cole: https://www.honeyandhustle.co/i-read-a-chapter-of-banana-ball-by-jesse-cole-for-you/Thanks for listening! The first snowstorm of the season didn't just test trucks—it tested systems. We sat down with Justin Thomas, operations manager at Lazer Tow in Kansas City and part of the Cardinal Legacy Towing Group, to unpack how teams managed ETAs when hills iced over, why side streets often beat clogged interstates, and what happens when real-world experience meets structured training. From the cab to the classroom, Justin brings a rare mix of heavy haul, RGN, and rail-sector instruction to show how safer methods and sharper decisions keep people and revenue protected. We dig into the October training series that combined EV and alternative-fuel response, a one-day light-duty course, and a two-day heavy recovery program—scheduled to respect operators' weekends and, yes, a Chiefs game. The surprise highlight: competitors sharing a room, swapping numbers, and leaving with common safety standards. With strong hosting by Lazer and local sponsor support, the classes turned into a blueprint for market-wide collaboration. Justin explains what stuck, from practical rigging choices to better traffic control, and how those changes speed up scenes without cutting corners.Looking ahead, we spotlight a new three-hour leadership class aimed at frontline leads and managers who set culture on the lot and on the white line. Pairing leadership skills with updated EV protocols and field-proven heavy recovery techniques creates a balanced playbook: communicate clearly, plan smart, execute safely. We also talk instructor bench strength—why having trainers who still work real jobs keeps lessons current and honest. If you care about reducing risk, improving retention, and getting home safe, this conversation gives you next steps you can put to work tomorrow.Subscribe, share this with a shop owner or operator who needs a lift, and drop a review to help more pros find the show.
