I have long championed S*M*A*S*H in my days as a radio DJ in the early 90s, so I can't begin to tell you how excited to speak with singer/songwriter Edward Borrie on W♥M Radio. Note: All the questions were from memory/on the fly, so please excuse me if I got some information or some dates wrong. Regrettably I am pretty sure I do not have all the singles/EPs, but I have a lot of them (see photograph at the bottom). S*M*A*S*H was not known at all at the time, and I only discover the band when my friend Melinda was KFSR's music director at the time gave me a copy of Self Abused album for review. I would later obsessively track down any singles and EPs I could get my hands on. Remember, this was before the internet, so getting the right information was hard to come by. Topics: The beginning of S*M*A*S*H, circa 1984. First single was Real Surreal 7" US Tour in support of Self Abused (Hi-Rise Records) album. Sub Pop Records released Barrabas/Turn On The Water 7" Sleeper's "Lady Love Your Countryside", a nod to S*M*A*S*H's "Lady Love Your C***" (which in turn, was a nod to Germaine Greer). The rare Rest Of My Life single (released January 1996). The second album Icon. "I Want to Kill Somebody", 20 years later. The 2014 EP S*M*A*S*H: (Without Regret) - EP is on iTunes now for $3.99. Keep up with S*M*A*SH on Facebook. See also smash.weheartmusic.com. Here is a photograph of some S*M*A*S*H singles and vinyl in my collection. I also just bought (Without Regret) via iTunes, so I can't really show that off.
Our special guest on WHM Radio is Paul Robb from Information Society! 1. The progression/difference in the self-titled album and Hack. 2. Christina wanted to know about the freestyle tour (without Kurt Harland). What was that like? And what was it like to reunite back with Kurt? 3. Why do you think your music translate so well in foreign countries, particularly Brazil and Japan? 4. Speaking of international, tell me about the new single "Land of the Blind", coming out this week on HAKATAK International? I got to listen to it and I have to say, I love it. It sounds very much like Peace + Love Inc-era (particularly that heavy techno section in the song). 5. The song is a preview single from your upcoming album _Hello World, what else can we expect from the new record? 6. Bonus question: Whatever happened to that Information Society car?
Having already built an audience with Black Flag, Henry Rollins hit it on a different level with The Rollins Band's breakthrough hit song "Liar" on MTV and Beavis & Butthead. Since then, Rollins has gone on spoken word tour, written over 20 books, acted on movies and television. Currently, Henry Rollins is on tour for his politically-charged "Capitalism" tour. Tonight on election-eve is his last stop on our nation's capitol city of Washington, DC. You can watch tonight's performance for free on TakePart TV at 8pm EST. Rollins talked about the fifty capital cities and what he observed from each city. Note: St Paul in Minnesota gets a big thumb up from Rollins who was surprised that "everything's still open!" We also asked about his involvement with TakePart TV and how he got involved with them. Interestingly enough, he talks about how strange it is to finally go to his home and sleep in his own bed (since he spends 90% of the year on the road, living in and out of tour buses and rock venues.) BONUS: Reading books on tour. Henry Rollins will be performing tonight at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. You can tune in and watch it free tonight. San Cisco's Jordi Davieson came on We Heart Music Radio to chat. The band is from Fremantle (which is actually in Perth). We reviewed their first EP Golden Revolver (April 2011) but it wasn't until their next single "Awkward" that really blew up this band. Jordi tells us about the day of the countdown and they were all gathered around the radio in their studio, anticipating where their song would be place. They had no idea how amazingly high it got: #7 in Triple J's Hottest 100 Countdown. When I asked about how it was being right up there with Gotye, Black Keys, and Lana Del Rey, Jordi said, "It's all about timing and luck and all those things coming together." I asked about their "Politely Awkward Tour" with Jungle Giants, and Jordi said it was busy. And speaking of tour, San Cisco are getting ready to rock CMJ (College Music Journal) this week in America. I am very excited about their Turf Club show with Chaos Chaos (Smoosh). Apparently, drummer Scarlett is friends with Chloe & Asya. I didn't get a chance to properly thank Jordi for his time on We Heart Music… we got awkwardly disconnected. San Cisco is currently in America to play CMJ and two extra shows. Australians, look for their debut album, set for November 23rd, 2012.
We ♥ Matt Pinfield. With over 25 years of experience as a radio DJ, television VJ, Pinfield is truly "The Rock and Roll Encyclopedia". Pinfield is part of Skype's "Join Say it with Skype" upcoming competition to be the Skype house band. This is a great opportunity for young musicians to showcase their music and win a professional studio recording. Judges (and later mentors) will include Matt Pinfield, Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy) and Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic). Here's how it works: • Using a laptop or computer with a webcam, log into Facebook • Add the Say It With Skype app • Find the "submit a URL of your band" and hit "record a live performance" • The next step is to just rock out. IMPORTANT: Bands can submit their entries on the Skype Facebook page until Thursday, June 14 at 11:59 P.M. EST. Winners will be selected and notified on Tuesday, June 19 via email and will be announced publicly on Monday, July 9 at 9:00 A.M. EST. Besides from "Say it with Skype", Pinfield also talk a little about Dave Kendall and 120 Minutes, how he consume his music (he has a record player in his kitchen). Song of the show is Gaslight Anthem's "45", which is Matt Pinfield's favorite song at the moment. Keep up with Matt Pinfield on twitter, he's currently started MTV's The Hivecast with Matt Pinfield (they're on episode #1 with Mark Ronson), he's on "terrestrial radio" with Cumulus Media-produced "Flashback" show, and is working on a book. BONUS: • Matt's hilarious Prince story, plus Bob Mould. • I should also mention that I use the standard Skype phone and computer application all the time, but not so much the Facebook's "Say It With Skype" app. As part of the research, I did check it out by sending a birthday greeting with our favorite Ash band.
Your hosts are Amy, Emily, and Vu. While I dominated this show (because of Twisted Sister), Emily and Amy will talk more in next week's show. Normally these podcasts don't appear back-to-back, but because of the untimely death of MCA (Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys), I felt that I had to push this as a breaking news podcast. I had just heard the news as I was bringing up the recording equipment for the podcast, so none of us were really prepared to talk about Beastie Boys and their massive influence. As you recall, Adam had to cancel all the Beastie Boys tour, due to a cancerous tumor in his left parotid gland (that was in 2009). The last BB news we reported was that they released Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (part one was never released!). The majority of this show is about Twisted Sister, thanks to the gold mine that is Dee Snider's biography "Shut Up and Give Me the Mic". The book comes out May 8th via Gallery Books/Simon & Schuster Publishing. If you can't bother to read the review, you can give us a listen. Amy recalls her first and only hand-written fan letter to Twisted Sister. Her reward was a glossy 8x11 photograph of the band. I know the timeline is a little off, but for the most part, the UK broke Twisted Sister and they got a record deal with Atlantic Records. We briefly touch on their rise and eventual fall (no thanks to Tipper Gore). We also talk about his relationship with his wife, Suzette. They met when she was 15 and he was 21! We played a clip of Dee Snider's Dee Does Broadway album, coming out May 8th, as a nice companion to his book. Song of the show is the classic Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It" from their triple platinum 1984 album, Stay Hungry. PS, according to twistedsister.com, this will be the "best Twisted summer ever", they'll be on tour in Europe and the USA. If I get a tour announcement, I'll let you know.
Another really long show, this runs for about an hour. I wanted to cut more out, but they were all so laugh-out-loud that I kept most of it in.Kristen, the guest of honor, does most of the talking, about her travels and future plans. Cristina stopped in to talk about Peter Steele's unexpected death. Steele is best known for being the singer and songwriter of goth/metal band Type O Negative. He died of heart failure at the age of 48.PS, Also, hey, I'm sick. I haven't been feeling good since Saturday, and I fear it's probably because I went out every night for the past three weeks. I must've picked up this bug from standing too close to someone sick or just simply that mother nature is trying to shut me down. Either case, I'm taking it easy this next few weeks.W♥M Radio will be going on hiatus for a while. You see, I've become increasingly unhappy with the Comcast service I'm getting. For the most part Comcast works, but on the days when it's not working, it's very frustrating. For instance, today (Tuesday), it's been going in and out sporadically. It happens on all the holidays (the most recent being on Easter when I was so mad that I couldn't get any work done). So here's the thing, I pay $60 a month for their "high-speed" service, and I'm gone for twelve hours a day for my day job and going to shows at night, so when I am home, I just expect it to work, you know? And don't tell me it's my modem or my router, I do know how to reset them if it comes to that. What's my alternative? I can't/won't use DSL. Really? You want me to hook up a phone line first? Really??? No thank you. There's basically no cable-type internet in my area, so my only option will have to be the free wifi coffee shops. I am probably going with the free option with also a $30 unlimited AT&T data plan for the iPad, which is not out until May 7th, so I'll have to wait for this option. That's my plan, I'll probably get rid of Comcast in June or July, we'll see. Subscription OptionsSubscribe on iTunesSubscribe via RSSAdd to GoogleAdd to Yahoo____Archive of this show at archive.org.
