Bill Burr, Mark Normand, Vic Henley, Matt Pinfield, Ben Mezrich 2/20 The final year of my radio journey holds a special place in my heart, made even more poignant by the loss of my cherished friends, Carl Ruiz and Vic Henley. Reflecting on that time, I rediscovered the pure passion and exhilaration that drew me to radio in the first place. Amidst the chaos and challenges, we found endless moments of hilarity and camaraderie. Alongside Carl, Vic, and Sherrod Small, we shared unforgettable experiences both on and off the airwaves, our tight-knit bond shining through every episode. That year also marked Carl Ruiz's meteoric rise to stardom, inspiring me to launch the Opie Radio podcast with him. I'm immensely grateful to Erock, Clubsoda Kenny, Paul, and Louis for joining us on this wild ride. Today's guest really brings me back. Welcome central Jersey's finest, Kevin Shields of Detention and Bigger Thomas. Kevin was a founding member of the central New Jersey punk scene that birthed bands like Bouncing Souls and Vision. He talks about what the scene was like, how it developed, and how it changed. He also talks about life before punk. He was in the Coast Guard and traveled all over; which is how he discovered punk rock in San Francisco in 1979. After an honorable discharge, he moved back to Jersey, picked up a bass, and formed Detention. Their first gig was an eviction party that was shut down by the cops. Their second gig resulted in a ban. Despite, or maybe because of, that, they were championed by none other than Matt Pinfield. Detention was, and really still is, a DIY affair in the truest punk sense. They were working class and wanted to have some fun. Now Left For Dead Records is releasing a compilation of some of Detention's material and it really is a time capsule. Check out Dead Rock ‘n Rollers on Left For Dead Records. Interview with Kevin Shields Of Detention. Detention was one of the first and best bands of the ‘80s New Jersey hardcore punk explosion. Their wonderfully tasteless “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” single became the college radio cult classic of 1983. The song's 97 seconds of primal Ramones-style speed-punk mocked the demise of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious, John Belushi, and John Bonham — who “played the drug game and couldn't maintain.” They even foretold the drug-related heart attack of Jim Carroll, famous for “All The People Who Died,” screaming, “What are you waiting for? Do it!” Saving the best for last, “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” raised the obvious question: “Why couldn't it be Barry Manilow?” The Detention story goes back to Central Jersey, to the Shields family home in Hillsborough Township, about 20 minutes from the “culture capital” of New Brunswick. Kevin Shields, the fourth of five sons, grew up listening to his older brothers' sophisticated record collection of hippie music that ranged from Blue Cheer to King Crimson. Kevin recalls: “Early on, I knew that rock ‘n roll was something special. I was fascinated.”  “I enlisted in the Coast Guard when I was 17. I was out on my own. I was always a music guy and realized music was getting stale with Genesis and whatnot. I read all the magazines, and the ads in the back, so I sent money to these labels, and came home with albums like Never Mind the Bollocks and Rocket to Russia, and singles by the Slickee Boys and MX-80 Sound. But the coup d'grace was when we stationed in Alameda and I went wild in San Francisco. I went to the Mabuhay Gardens like three nights a week, seeing all the legendary West Coast bands: DKs, DOA, Black Flag. I got thrashed on the education of seeing live bands.”   When Kevin returned home in 1981, he was inspired to make music. “Detention came about because I decided to be a player not a spectator,” he explains. “The easiest way was to recruit my family, so I turned to my brothers. I bought a bass, but I didn't know how to play it. My brother Paul suggested I get in touch with this guitarist Rodney Matejek. He showed me how to play simply, and within months we started coming up with riffs, and what would become songs came very quickly.”  The band — Kevin, Rodney, frontman Paul Shields, and drummer Daniel Shields — played their first show at Raritan Manor on the Somerville Circle, hosted by a young Matt Pinfield in his first radio DJ gig at WRSU (Rutgers). It was a noisy and chaotic affair, with people rolling on the floor — until police arrived and stopped the mayhem. “We were given 100 bucks, and we promised never to play there again,” Kevin says with a grin.  Kevin offers some backstory: “Rob Roth, god bless his pointed head, he had a vision. He got us into the studio in Roselle Park, and he paid for it. All we had to do was get good recordings of the two songs, including the B-side “El Salvador.” It came out great. My brother Paul certainly had the lungs for the job! Those 500 copies got us gigs and got us a lot of notice.” In 1985, Detention released a self-produced self-titled album before disbanding. What's the connection with a spy thriller from 1985 and the start of this episode of Music In My Shoes? Find out as we reminisce about "The Falcon and the Snowman," its espionage intrigue, and the collaboration between David Bowie and the Pat Metheny Group. Alongside these reflections, there's a heartfelt segment inspired by Butch Walker's social media post, which serves as a poignant reminder about the importance of health after music industry icon Matt Pinfield's stroke. Listeners from across the country share their stories and connections with bands that defined the rock scene and past MIMS episodes, including a nostalgic mention of Ian Slater from APB at the 688 Club. We embrace the vibrant feedback from our audience, like Kathy in Georgia and Del from "Mind The Gap Radio." This episode is as much about sharing personal anecdotes as it is about celebrating music that left an indelible mark on our lives. As we journey through the sounds of John Lennon, Ramones and Squeeze, we reflect on the unique sound creations and the lasting legacies these artists have left behind. The episode concludes with a look back at The Stone Roses and fond memories of the Midtown Music Festival in Atlanta. Hear what they shared here: https://youtu.be/ZpETqb5ukbQ?feature=shared “I think Sons of Silver's music embodies the spirit and enduring elements of classic rock with a thoroughly modern twist and a flair for critical thinking, which is something the world certainly needs more of right now,” says Pinfield. Sons of Silver features vocalist and guitarist Pete Argyropoulos (PeteRG), drummer Marc Slutsky (Splender, Peter Murphy), keyboardist and engineer Brina Kabler, guitarist Kevin Haaland (Skillet), and bassist Adam Kury (Candlebox). “We are what we eat,” says Kury. “The record is a warning: if we continue down this path, we're doomed,” adds Argyropoulos. “But if you look at it from a different angle, you'll see that we share more in common than we realize, even if we focus on what separates us. At its best, rock ‘n' roll brings us together and celebrates what we have in common.” Runaway Emotions is Sons of Silver's first full-length album, following two EPs—2020's Doomsday Noises (which placed three songs on the Billboard Active Rock chart) and 2022's Ordinary Sex Appeal. Yes, this is our last foray into the 'Dark Side of the 90s' Vice series. In keeping with the total and complete theme of FG itself, we just had to talk more about the birth of the Seattle sound and Sub-Pop records. This episode focuses more on the independent label scene and just how corporations really tried to ruin everything. At least there is a silver lining in the fact that Sub-Pop is still kicking as a label and has become a cultural touchstone to the city of Seattle. This episode talks to Bruce Pavitt (Sub-Pop co-founder), Charles Peterson (photographer), and others to get a more complete picture. Link to watch the episode: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x83x9km*first on Patreon March 2022----Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! Hosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie & Jai @jai_stylefactoryFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastFind more Fashion Grunge on LinktreeJoin me on Substack:  The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletter☕️ Support Fashion Grunge on Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/fashiongrunge

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to actress/director Jessica Pinfield, daughter of music personality & record exec. Matt Pinfield. Our conversation with Jessica was a very frank and open discussion that took us to some pretty fun places discussing early MTV and alternative radio and also to some pretty intense, dark places as well. Through it all, Jessica is a fantastic and honest guest who talks to us about her early memories of growing up in New Jersey at alternative rock stations & indie record stores while also regaling us of stories of shows like 120 Minutes and more. Along the way however, we hear about a less than ideal side of the freewheeling world of 90s's excess that she lived in with her dad and mom in a household that wasn't quite Leave it to Beaver. Jessica is brutally frank about the things she saw as a kid but also as an adult in a slightly dysfunctional world of radio, television and the music industry in general. But thankfully, as we learn, Jessica and dad Matt are reconnecting and even living together in the same house all these years later, today in LA. Better yet, we hear from Jessica about her acting and directing career she's creating for herself today and it's a beautiful counterbalance to everything that went on prior. Take a listen.
