Is hunting journal articles making us miss the boat of big ideas?

this IS research

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2025 41:44

Is the journal publishing process and the “game” around journal publishing forcing us to give up on big ideas and instead work on small ideas about trivial matters? We are not so sure. We think that science needs many different types of academics, and they have all sorts of different ideas, big and small, and we need outlets for expressing every single one of them. But outlets, like ideas, are not all equal. Journals are an incremental genre leaning toward rigor and thus risk type-2 errors. Book are an expansive genre learning towards big ideas – and thus risk type-1 errors. So the question is rather what type of scholar you are and whether you can handle the very different processes and mechanisms – those associated with big ideas that take a long time to develop, versus the production of smaller ideas and insights that incrementally push our knowledge forward. For the past 77 years, since the founding of Pakistan at the partition of British held India, the United States and Pakistan have worked together to try and bring stability to this region of the world. As the fifth largest country in the world, as measured by population, and sitting at a geopolitical strategic crossroads, Pakistan remains an important partner on a wide range of issues of global, regional, and national interest. Whether it is managing their own relations with India, balancing the interests of the United States and China, or working on transnational issues such as climate change and terrorism, this country plays a key role in responding to the various challenges facing the world today. In this episode, we speak with Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, to explore the role that Pakistan would like to fill in the international system, to discuss where interests overlap, and to identify what Pakistan wants to see from its relationship with the United States. Through this conversation, we highlight the importance of understanding the deeper relationships than what is typically talked about. By discussing how the US-Pakistan relationship goes deeper than counterterrorism, we can better understand the ways this relationship can be leveraged to benefit both countries. Ambassador Masood Khan is currently serving as Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States, a role he has held since 2022. Prior to that he was the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir from August 2016 to August 2021. A supergroup is a band made up of musicians who have already achieved fame either as soloists or members of another band.  One of the most iconic of supergroups would be formed in 1988 and go by the name of The Traveling Wilburys.  In 1987 George Harrison released his album "Cloud Nine" with Jeff Lynne performing a number of instruments and co-producing.  They started talking about forming a group during those sessions, with Harrison talking about bringing in Bob Dylan and Lynne talking about bringing in Roy Orbison.  Tom Petty joined in when Harrison went to his house to pick up a guitar he had left there previously.  The criteria that Harrison had, according to fellow Wilbury Tom Petty, was a group of folks "who you could hang out with."  The group bonded over their appreciation for 50's-style rock n' roll, and their love of the Monty Python comedy troupe. The group took on personas of half-brothers, with George Harrison as Nelson Wilbury, Jeff Lynne as Otis Wilbury, Roy Orbison as Lefty Wilbury, Bob Dylan as Lucky Wilbury, and Tom Petty as Charlie T. Wilbury Jr.  Frequent collaborator Jim Keltner provides percussion work and takes on the name of Buster Sidebury.  The name Wilbury comes from a running joke between Lynne and Harrison.  When some error in the equipment would occur during the production of Harrison's "Cloud Nine" album, Harrison said, “We'll bury 'em in the mix.”The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 had to be done in 10 days, because Dylan and Orbison had upcoming tours and projects.  Generally the writing and recording of a song was completed in a single day.  The result was a commercial and critical success, and the album won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1990.Bruce presents this supergroup in today's podcast. MargaritaThis track starts with an 80's electronic feel, but quickly moves into a Bo Diddley beat that is more roots rock.  A deeper cut, this song was released as the B-side to the single "Handle with Care."Handle With CareThe big single went to number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 2 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart.  This song was the impetus to bringing the group together, as it was originally supposed to be an extra track for a B-side of a European single, but the result was deemed too good for a limited release. Not Alone Any MoreThis deeper track finishes off side 1.  It was written mainly by Otis Wilbury for the vocal style of Lefty Wilbury, although all members are credited as songwriters.  The lyrics reflect themes of loneliness, which were Lefty's signature style back in the 60's.End of the LineThis was the band's second single.  It peaked at number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100, but number 2 on the Album Rock Tracks chart.  Roy Orbison died of a heart attack at age 52 after recording the song but before the video was made.  The video features a guitar sitting in a rocking chair in memorial to Orbison ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Baby Doll by Devo (from the motion picture “Tape Heads”)Despite sporting an all-star cast, this comedy movie bombed at the box office. STAFF PICKS:Big League by Tom Cochrane and Red RiderWayne starts off the staff picks with a bittersweet song.  Cochrane tells a tale of a young hockey star destined for the pros until he lost his life in a car crash.  It was inspired by a true story told to Cochrane by the boy's father.  This song went to number 9 on the American Billboard Rock Tracks chart, and gets frequent airplay on classic rock radio stations in Canada. Didn't Know It Was Love by SurvivorRob's staff pick finds the singer looking back at a relationship he missed, and hoping it isn't too late.  Survivor had their big splash a few years prior with “Eye of the Tiger,” and this is off their seventh album, “Too Hot to Sleep.”  Unfortunately it barely made it onto the Billboard 200 album chart at 187, and the group broke up shortly thereafter.Kokomo by The Beach BoysLynch brings us the first number 1 US hit for the Beach Boys since the 60's.  The song was featured in the Tom Cruise movie “Cocktail,” and the song reflects a relaxed tropical vibe.  This single reinvigorated the Beach Boys, as fans began to look at their catalogue again. What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy) by Information SocietyBruce wraps up the staff picks with the signature song from a Minneapolis synth pop trio.  This song started as a 10-minute instrumental jam, but received minimalist lyrics reflecting the trouble people have communicating for the single release.  It also features sampled lyrics from Star Trek, particularly the repeated "pure energy" lyric from Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock. COMEDY TRACK:A Nightmare on My Street by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh PrinceThis single reflects the Halloween vibe as Will Smith aka The Fresh Prince riffs on Freddy Kruger's horror in “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Wes was the sole founder in 1981 of Delphi Internet Services Corporation, "The Company That Popularized The Internet" according to Michael Woolf, and was the creator of the world's first online encyclopedia. At the time it was sold to Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation in 1993, Delphi had been profitable for years and was among the four largest social networks, along with AOL, CompuServe and Prodigy. In 1986, while CEO of Delphi, Wes launched a spinoff, Global Villages, Inc. to serve magazine publishers and business clients with their own private-label social networks. Wes focused the attention of his new team on the need for reliable identities of individuals on the Internet, starting with the development of the VIVOS Enrollment Workstation. While developing VIVOS, Wes began collecting source material for a book about a hypothetical world public key infrastructure, built upon digital certificates representing measurably reliable identities, which would bring authenticity to online interactions and privacy to individuals. As the book began to take shape Wes was introduced to a group at the International Telecommunication Union that was attempting to implement a world PKI that was similar to the one he envisioned. Wes was subsequently appointed to the High Level Experts Group at the ITU's Global Cybersecurity Agenda. In an address in 2008 to the United Nations World Summit on Information Society in Geneva, Wes introduced the City of Osmio, a new certification authority. Wes's book, entitled Quiet Enjoyment, published in 2004 with a second edition in 2014, was followed by Wes's other titles including Don't Get Norteled in 2013 and Escape The Plantation in 2014.   Scott Schober is an author, CEO of www.bvsystems.com and #cybersecurity expert that appears regularly on Bloomberg TV, Fox Business & Fox News, CCTV America, Canadian TV News, Al Jazeera America, Arise TV as well as CNN, CBS Morning Show, MSNBC, CNBC, The Blaze, WPIX as well as local and syndicated Radio including Sirius/XM & Bloomberg Radio and NPR. Pre-show Patreon Only: Void Train and other train games, Fallout 4 This episode contains: A chill post-Thanskgiving episode with Steven and Ben. Turns out people get tired after eating smoked turkey and phǒ (phǒ real? phǒget about it), at least people over 40. Good times with family. These kids are talking and love Bluey. If you're of a certain age, you may not know Bluey, but you should. Are there new Bluey episodes? Not yet, but there is a new Bluey video game. Ben apologizes for talking about old Steam Deck issues, but he's really not sorry, is he? Anyways, the most recent update (3.5) fixed the issues his son had, so this is just an old man shouting at the cloud. BTW, 30 years ago was not 1970, Steven. You poor thing. Steven was not prepared for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off on Netflix, which looks like the comic book, has all the actors for the movie, and then runs with a “What If?” story, completely changing the Scott Pilgrim story at a fundamental level. Our patron Renee met Mark Hamill while she and her family were all dressed like Leia. Mark Hamill is so lucky. Ben asks Steven to go on a date to see The Abyss Special Edition for his birthday, but it's in Santa Maria, and Steven will never spend another birthday in “that hellhole” if he can help it. Brain Matters: Our brains are not able to 'rewire' themselves, despite what most scientists believe, new study argues. According to the article, two scientists argue that the commonly held belief that the brain can rewire itself and repurpose regions for new functions after injury or deficit is flawed. Through analyzing previous studies, they found no compelling evidence that areas like the visual cortex of blind individuals or uninjured areas after stroke took on entirely new functions. Instead, they believe the brain enhances existing latent abilities through learning and repetition, not completely changing functions. So for example, when someone loses a finger, the area for that finger already got some input from neighboring fingers, it just enhances that after amputation. Their view is that understanding true brain plasticity limits is important for patient expectations and rehabilitation approaches. The brain's ability to adapt comes from hard work, not magical reassignment of resources. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/11/231121175335.htm Pure energy (like that song from Information Society, and Leonard Nimoy): Generating Power on Earth From the Coldness of Deep Space. This article discusses the concept of generating power on Earth by utilizing the coldness of deep space. It explores the principles of thermodynamics, thermoelectric power generation, and radiative cooling. The article also presents various prototypes and experiments conducted to harness energy from the coldness of space, including the use of selective emitters and negative illumination photovoltaic cells. While the technology is still under development, it shows potential for powering low-power electronics and lighting, offering a sustainable energy solution. https://spectrum.ieee.org/energy-from-cold Mid-show Patreon Only: Limp Bizkit is making a comeback? Maybe you don't want to hear it. Science Fiction: Steven finally saw The Marvels with his wife. He liked it, but his wife was lost. Why is that? Well, if you haven't seen Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Wandavision, Secret Invasion (but not really), LOKI, Hawkeye, Ant-Man and the Wasp: QuANTumania, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers Endgame or X-Men: The Last Stand, maybe you're gonna be a little lost. Steven and Ben both agree: that's a little much for the normies, but it's also a little much for these tired old comic book nerds (like our valiant podcast hosts). With so much discussion about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ben says we've got to talk about something else, so what does he do? It's DC time. My Adventures with Superman is a cartoon on Adult Swim and Max that is worth watching, and Ben gives just enough spoilers to whet Steven's appetite. Maybe you would like it too. Steven always forgets that Superman is Ben's jam, at least when anybody other than Zach Snyder is at the helm. What is Ben's favorite Superman movie? Wouldn't you like to know. Post-show Patreon Only: The Flash movie, we have thoughts on how to fix the MCU

Kon Kan, el proyecto del canadiense Barry Harris, publica el single “I Beg Your Pardon (I Never Promised You a Rose Garden)” en 1988. Wayne Byrne is an acclaimed author and film historian from Ireland. He started his career working for local County Kildare newspapers before being invited to write for the iconic Irish pop culture bible Hot Press Magazine as a music, book, and restaurant critic.             His debut book, The Cinema of Tom DiCillo: Include Me Out, was released in 2018.  Wayne followed it with well-received works on subjects like Burt Reynolds, cinematographer Nick McLean, the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, and legendary Hollywood filmmaker Walter Hill. I've read both Welcome to Elm Street and Walter Hill: The Cinema of a Hollywood Maverick and can tell you that they're both deeply researched, entertainingly detailed looks at how influential filmmakers create the dreams the world loves to watch. I highly recommend Wayne's work to you.            Look for the release of Wayne's latest book, Hired Guns: Portraits of Women in Alternative Music, co-written with his best friend, acclaimed musician Amanda Kramer, who's been the keyboardist/vocalist of The Psychedelic Furs, 10,000 Maniacs, Siouxsie Sioux, The Golden Palominos, and Information Society.             He's also busy writing three upcoming books, including another collaboration with Amanda Kramer, which is a study of the evolution of film soundtracks in the revolutionary New Hollywood era.             Wayne's also working with cinematographer Roy Wagner on a biography documenting Wagner's acclaimed career, called Beyond the Shadows, as well as a critical/cultural overview of the Halloween movies entitled, The Ongoing Halloween Franchise: 13 Films and Counting.

Steven Furnell, IEEE senior member and professor of cybersecurity at the University of Nottingham, joins me on today's episode of The Tech Talks Daily podcast. Steven discusses the findings of his recently published paper titled 'Assessing website password practices –Unchanged after fifteen years?', which explores how leading websites guide and support users in making appropriate password choices. The paper presents the fifth in a series of studies that have been conducted every few years since 2007, with the aim of examining the level of guidance provided to users before and during the password selection process, as well as examining the nature of the passwords that users are then permitted to choose. We also discuss the enforcement of password rules and applying various tests which determine whether the site filters out common or predictable password choices. About Steven Steven Furnell is a senior member of the IEEE and professor of cybersecurity at the University of Nottingham. His research includes usability of security and privacy, security management and culture, and technologies for user authentication and intrusion detection. He has authored more than 320 papers in refereed international journals and conferences, as well as books including Cybercrime: Vandalising the Information Society and Computer Insecurity: Risking the System.
