It's been 5 months since our last episode. In that time I've become a father (woah) and Mark has become really popular on Instagram. So it's a sort of catch-up episode, and a moan at each other about Apple, Microsoft, CPU's and Adobe and software named after disasters. Not exactly sure what ‘State of the Union’ is, Mark suggested it and I heard it on The West Wing once so sure it’s all good. Corrections: - Spectre Vulnerability: When we recorded this and discussed the Spectre and Meltdown CPU exploits, it looked like only Intel Chipsets were at risk. Within days there were identical exploits for most of major chip manufacturers. - Loscil, producer of my jukebox track DID reply to my tweet... it's pronounced like 'fossil'. There's no Toolstar this time, but we do talk about alternatives to Adobe's Creative Cloud suite, namely Hindenburg audio editor (https://hindenburg.com) and Affinity Designer (https://affinity.serif.com) My Jukebox pick is a track called 'Anthropocene' by Loscil (Monument Builders album, 2017). It's used in the Iceland surf film 'Under An Arctic Sky', a short documentary I recommend whether you're into surfing or not. Mark's tune is 'Cruise (Don't Stop)' from the 1995 Nightmares on Wax album Smokers Delight. Mark says this album was a constant feature in his car in the late 90's. Both tracks are added to the Relative Paths Playlist. Links: Leaving this bit to Mark... of there are any. Special mention to Loopback by Rogue Amoeba (https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/). This software make our Jukebox snippets so easy to record into Audition, and we were kindly given a free copy. – Ben

It's going to be more than 20 minutes this week. Lots to talk about. TechSmith's SnagIt, already the best screen capture program available, becomes even better. Updates to Adobe's Creative Cloud, large and small, make the suite of applications for creatives even more essential. In Short Circuits ... If you're not familiar with the Maxthon browser, which is a product of China, you probably will be soon enough. Why would anyone want a wireless disk drive? Let's check it out. In Spare Parts (only on the website): Most programs today can create PDF documents, but going the other way can be a problem. An on-line service plans to change that. Verizon plans to improve its location-based technology. I'll explain that in English. The Weather Company and IBM will soon make highly-localized forecasts possible. And the Malwarebytes blog reveals a malicious app that can use your smart phone.

The latest version of Adobe's Creative Cloud adds so many new improvements, tweaks, and features that just trying to list them all is impossible, but I have some information about some of them. In Short Circuits: Microsoft support for most versions of Internet Explorer other than version 11 ends, along with support for Windows 8, if the system hasn't been updated to version 8.1. We'll look at security threats to watch for in 2016. Adoption of Windows 10 is running ahead of expectations and more than 200 million Windows 10 computers have been activated. In Spare Parts (only on the website): A system is being developed to allow self-driving automobiles to help each other. AT and T says it will help the Federal Communications Commission modernize it's "business". If you want a dog, but you really don't want a dog, you're now able to buy a robot dog.

If you're looking for a reason to enroll in Adobe's Creative Cloud for Photographers, just take a look at what's new in Lightroom and Photoshop; if you haven't checked your Google and Facebook privacy settings recently, now would be a good time. In Short Circuits: The FBI and other law enforcement agencies have whacked another mole, Amazon's Black Friday in July received less than stellar reviews, and after having only a minor presence at Germany's IFA trade show for several years, Microsoft will have the keynote slot at this year's show. In Spare Parts, only on the website: Microsoft is essentially giving up on phones, at least the hardware part; in July of 1948, Bell Labs announced the "transfer resistance device", which we now know as the transistor; a company in China says it has a battery that can be ready to use after just 6 or 7 minutes of charging; and if you're looking for medical marijuana, there's a app for that.

A smaller version of Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 will soon be available and at a lower price, Adobe continues to release mobile applications that allow designers to stop using scratch pads when they're away from the computer, and most people now agree that data on a computer is more valuable than the computer. In Short Circuits: I have a quick update on Windows 10, which now works on the notebook computer I tried to install it on a couple of weeks ago and if you want a perpetual license for Lightroom 5 but haven't been able to figure out how to get it, I'll show you the way. In Spare Parts, only on the website: TrueCrypt, rumored to be insecure, proves to be safe; an executive order from President Obama to fight foreign cyber-crooks, Yahoo and Microsoft extend negotiations on their future, and looking at activity by high-tech CEOs in battling a law in Indiana.

I've changed my mind about Adobe's Creative Cloud. Although I like it, Adobe should reconsider its policies. If you want your own website, there are lots of options. In Short Circuits: Office intrigue is rumored in Redmond. better Wi-Fi in your home may require new hardware, the FTC says search engine advertisements need to be more identifiable, and shaping up as the year of the tablet, 2013 may be the end of the color e-book reader.

The winning entry was submitted by Jim Leonardson, InDesign freelancer in Chicago! For his prize, he chose an autographed copy of Real World InDesign CS6, which is on its way. Here is Jim's list: In the Info panel flyout menu; select File Info to see the image name in the Title of the window Hover the cursor over the link icon in the upper left corner of the image frame. A tool tip appears with the file name. In the Structure pane of the document window, flip down the Root tag, and other tags until you see the “href” and the full path name (In the contextual menu “Select in Structure”) [ED: after first applying an XML tag to the image with the Tags panel] Use the Layers panel; flip down the layer name to show the contents. The link name is shown inside angle brackets. In the Preflight panel, if there is a broken link or document profile violation the link name will be shown. Use the Object > Captions menu or contextual menu to generate a caption. Use the contextual menu, in the Graphics flyout menu select Reveal in Finder, Bridge or Mini-Bridge. If there is a caption that happens to be overflowed, it can be seen in the story editor, tagged as “Text variable live metadata caption name” [We didn't think this should count but it's interesting because it has "Story Editor" in it] In the Package dialog box, under Links and Images it displays name, type, page, status and ICC profile. [He thought of this one "while doing yard work" after we told him he'd won] A wonderful effort, but Jim missed a few. Here are additional correct answers, compiled from all the entries we received: Add image to Library, name appears in Library preview Select image and open the Animation panel, name populates the Name field Apply any preset animation to the image to see its filename in the Timing panel Add image to Articles panel [pulls the filename from the Layers panel, see Jim's #4 above] In the File > Package dialog box, click the Show Report button, all image filenames are listed there [listen to our argument about this in the podcast — fun times!] Add an Image Name variable (Type > Text Variables > Insert Variable > Image Name) to a text frame that touches the image If the image name was included in its XMP metadata [not a default state, and not something you could do in InDesign] you could reveal it by choosing the relevant XMP field in the Object Export Options > Alt Text (or Tagged PDF) area Option/Alt-double click to Edit Original (or choose the command from contextual menu), name is revealed in native editing program. [Technically not an "in InDesign" solution but it's fairly close] Export to EPUB or HTML and look in the mark-up code [Ditto] Use a script that creates a list of filenames [see Links above] Final note: We love that Bonnie Barrett told us in her entry that she tried to find one in CS6's Content Collector — great idea! — but, alas, no luck.
