Everything from lifting in 4XL shorts in the early 2000s to becoming a parent and understanding that every choice comes with consequence. In the early days Octavius met Syn of Afrobrutality a one of a kind straight shooter that also helped shaped his mindset going forward. Syn Martinez is the founder of Afrobrutality brand that has built a passionate fan base. We dive deep into very serious conversation and for myself is a conversation that challenged me but with it reminded me why this platform exists and its to have powerful conversations. Syn and I converse about branding and in the modern world with the abundance of information and brands that are following monetary success not authentic culture success. The lack of authenticity in society and in entrepreneurship is where we find a large influence in mental health issues stemming from because of the pressures and influences of these large voices in media. In season 2 of episode 4 of Inside The Labyrinth Podcast, Jay and I had the privilege of having two power houses and leaders on the show, Brandon Lilly And Syn Martinez. "Brandon is a top ranked powerlifter, author of "The Cube Method", and "365STRONG", as well as a respected strength coach. Brandon is ranked as one of the strongest powerlifters of All-Time, having world class totals in multiple weight class, raw, and equipped — *2,110 lbs Raw Belt Only, *2,237 lbs Raw with Knee Wraps and *2,612 lbs Multiply Equipped. His efforts as a lifter, and a coach have helped cause a paradigm shift in the sport of powerlifting. His Cube Method has helped over a dozen men total 2,000 lbs or more in raw divisions, and over twenty women total over 1,000 lbs." ========================================================================================================================================= "AfroBrutality is a mindset for people who care about being healthy, who care about succeeding in life by any and all means, who will do whatever it takes to add positivity to their life and the people around them," "We're after a mindset of people who want to lead a positive life and won't let life dictate how that looks and feels." Martinez tells BuzzFeed Health he needed something that captured the spirit of their loose collective of mostly black and Latino athletes that started working out together in 2008, as well as Martinez's non-conformist, in-your-face approach to fitness, and the super-hardcore CrossFit workouts they were doing. He drew a skull with an afro and a middle finger as the handle of the afro pick. He called it Afro Brutality." ========================================================================================================================================== Not only was this episode one of my favorite podcasts, but it was one of my favorite conversations I have ever had. Brandon shares his life experience and how a traumatic lifting injury changed his life forever in 2014. Not only was Brandon very honest about his journey but he admitted his faults during his journey which made him who he is today. Syn speaks on how AfroBrutality was created and how he first met Brandon. Syn does not hold back and is the definition of starting an idea from scratch and turning a dream into a reality. If you are looking for life experience and the willing to change, this is for you. Jay and I want to thank both of you leaders for coming on the show and making a difference. Its conversations like this one that show no matter who we are, we all have struggles and we all have the opportunity to grow and make ourselves better. @afrobrutality @brandonlilly3 @therealjumpmanjay @reps_for_responders Repsforresponders.org --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/Inside-The-Laybrinth/support
Syn is the founder of AfroBrutality, a Harlem-based fitness movement, and Moe is an Olympic lifting coach at multiple gyms in Ottawa.
Syn and I go way back. We meet in 2009 in South Beach, Miami at Crossfit inc. Fill Fest. Over a better half of a decade I have observed Syn, along with his dynamic brand Afro Brutality, impact and influence people through apparel as well as his presence via social media. Syn is an entrepreneur by heart and like it or not, his message is always loud and proud. He is either going to piss you off or he might just light a fire under your ass! Syn Martinez is an artist in the way of a lifestyle brand AfroBrutality. He is currently speaking with Crossfit Inc. on collaborating on future projects. Jeremy Thiel “A commitment to excellence in business and increasing quality of life is for everyone he encounters is a signature trait of a leader. “ Focused on challenging himself and those around him to consistent excellence. Blessed with the heart of an athlete, the mind of a leader, and an entrepreneurial spirit Jeremy is not only effective in his approach to business but also extremely gifted in motivating people to achieve their own goals. His intense drive and dedication to succeed in life has laid the foundation for his innovative approach to leadership.
We felt the need to have a podcast episode for a few reasons:correction There was a miscommunication where Riki DM'd Jen about the racial slur, and in fact it was someone else who confronted Jen. Jen responded and doubled down that she knew it was a derogatory term, and it was forwarded to Riki. The incident did occur. People are not even close to fully informed on the incident. They see a thumbnail for an apology video, or hear about it, and then tell everyone to calm down or stop the negativity over one mistake that was made. We outline that this is not one single incident. The owner of UBD made a racist comment, and then doubled down by confirming she knew it was derogatory when she was confronted. She confirms again she knew of such in the apology video, and then the next day on a livestream uses a different derogatory term. On top of all that, several more people have come out to share their experiences in how they have been bullied and stolen from by this owner. Evidence for what happened has been purposefully deleted and censored. There has also been doctored and fake evidence that needs to be brought to light, so that Jen is not accused of something she did not do or say. The community needs to be informed of everything that happened, so they can make their own decision on what to do. And it will not happen if everyone simply, "minds their own business" as some people have told us. If everyone just leaves it alone, it will be swept under the rug and people will never know. There needed to be an open, verbal discussion on how something like this occurs, where it comes from, what can come of it in the future, and the current status of the CrossFit community. We try to discuss possibilities in how Jen can possibly right this wrong. And we need to give her credit where it's due in actions she did take. Returning to the podcast is Syn Martinez of AfroBrutality, CrossFit Harlem and the newly formed caffeine empire or Afro-BREW-tality. This time we talk about the concept of being “Real Man/Woman”. We talk about the lessons you only learn from an ass-kicking, how taking care of yourself equips you to take care of others and the garbage dump that is social media. We also discuss the end of clever words on a shirt, New Jack City, the watering down of fitness apparel and why clean and snatch jokes are FUCKING OVER! http://shop.afrobrutality.com/
This week we talk to the Sadistic Coach himself, Founder of CrossFit Harlem, Creator of the AfroBrutality Brand and disruptor extraordinaire Syn Martinez. Syn talked with us about his journey from fat to fierce-as-fuck, the origin story of CrossFit Harlem, what it’s like building your own personal team of X-men and so much more! That’s not a cheesy marketing phrase, we talked about A LOT OF STUFF, this clocks in at our longest podcast to date and was so full of info we almost broke it into two episodes. But “to be continued” episodes have always been lame so we crammed in every last minute (we’re talking to you PUNKY BREWSTER). We talked about why abs are bullshit, the good and bad of Paleo, big weight versus endurance, the value of gymnastics in early life, creating a brand while building a community and being who you are. Learn why AfroBrutality has such impact on it’s fans and why trying to please everyone is a weak option. Why pissing some people off can be a good thing. And why if you’re true to your voice, your audience will find you.
