Since the sale of CrossFit Inc. almost 2 years ago, there's been a noticeable increase in the tools, resources, and desire to help CrossFit affiliates succeed from a business perspective. This includes things like: Launching an affiliate network of brands and businesses to leverage the purchasing power of thousands of affiliates and save owners $$$ Creating an affiliate playbook that incorporates staff and business ideas, not just training methodology. Launching CrossFit Affiliate Programming, and recently announcing that this would be programmed separately from CrossFit.com programming Partnering with Best Hour of Their Day, the first time CrossFit has ever had an approved mentorship service for business support. In today's episode we discuss our thoughts on the recent changes CrossFit has made to their affiliate resources, and whether we believe CrossFit understands what affiliates need to succeed today and in the future.

In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I was joined by EC Synkowski, the founder of OptimizeMe Nutrition LLC. We chatted about the importance of reaching a minimum critical daily dose of fruits and vegetables for optimizing health and performance. We talked about how to determine your ideal protein requirements to suit individual health and functional needs. EC explained her 10 principles of nutrition and how to apply them to improve health and longevity. EC and I also discussed some of the limitations and biases in common educational and research materials to be weary of.  EC has extensive education in the life sciences with a bachelor's degree in Biochemical Engineering, a first MS in environmental sciences (with a focus in genetics), and a second MS in Nutrition & Functional Medicine. She has also trained others since 2000 and holds the Certified CrossFit Level 4 Coach (CF-L4) credential. Her professional experience includes working as a Program Manager for CrossFit Inc (2011-2017) authoring their training course materials and serving as a subject matter expert for their certifications. Eventually, after doing her master of science degree in nutrition and functional medicine, Synkowski resigned from CrossFit to become an entrepreneur and nutrition coach, eventually starting her own company in 2018. EC is the developer of the 800-gram challenge, a nutrition protocol that focuses on consuming 800 grams of fruits and vegetables a day. She also spent several years working for CrossFit HQ, designing their nutrition course materials. EC has accumulated more than 600 hours of public speaking teaching fitness and nutrition all over the world. With more than 20 years of experience and academic training, EC translates the evidence-based scientific data into practical solutions for everyday success. Welcome back to Chat Sh*t Get Fit - Is It Bad For You. This week we go "full send" into the world of CrossFit. A training system that is still fairly new especially when compared to things like weightlifting, powerlifting and bodybuilding. The question is is it bad for you? Is it worse for you than those other training modalities mentioned? Well, we've spoken about this before but it's 2022 now and we have some much larger and much newer scientific papers (listed at the bottom!) which will hopefully allow us to come to a more solid conclusion - Is CrossFit safe?   We also give our own thoughts on the world of CrossFit - Bill being a CrossFitter himself & Tom not - so we like to think we've tackled this in a non-biased way. We look at the variety of movements in CrossFit, we talk about the difference between the sport and training modality, and we look at "self-harm" in doing too much too soon. We finish by looking at the brand "CrossFit Inc" as Tom says numerous times "I love the training hate the brand" We also dive into those polls that you guys responded to on our Instagram and much to our pleasure the results were mixed which is perfect for starting a real conversation - so thank you!   Want more great content from us? Check out our membership platform Patreon where we offer a wide range of bonuses to members ranging from access to live specials to 1-1 health-boosting chats with Bill & Tom. CrossFit Inc founder Greg Glassman stepped down as chief executive on Tuesday, days after he apologized for his tweet on the killing of an unarmed black man as it drew criticism and led to footwear brand Reebok ending its tie up with the fitness regimen. His resignation comes at a time when sensitivity to issues facing people of color has taken center stage in the United States, with protests across the country after the killing of George Floyd on May 25. In response to a tweet by research firm Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation that classified racism and discrimination as public health issue, Glassman had posted on Saturday "It's FLOYD-19". The tweet, which equated the police killing of Floyd to the COVID-19 pandemic, drew flak and led to an apology from Glassman after Adidas AG-owned Reebok ended its 10-year-old partnership with his company. So here's the core point I'm trying to make. Following the example of Petworth Fitness and hoping we can continue to be the voice of change in our community, WODDITY will be formally denouncing CrossFit, and its silence, until specific actions are taken by the organization to begin healing race relations in its community. The full announcement will come on Sunday's Elite Sports Insider live show on YouTube, talking through what you can expect from WODDITY in the future and what steps CrossFit can take to make changes. I know CrossFit won't miss our 11,000 podcast listeners, and I know some of you will not be taking this journey with me. But it feels disingenuous to report news about an organization so out of touch while real people are suffering.I know WODDITY stands alone as a media organization in this moment. Companies like Morning Chalk Up have major sponsors like Black Rifle Coffee Company, which in itself is an outwardly bigoted organization. This is a journey I know we embark on alone. It's not the end of the podcast, it's not the end of our elite sports coverage, it's an opportunity for tremendous growth and thought leadership in a space that we can blatantly say has not been thinking, nor leading.

We are a daily podcast, Monday through Friday, doing CrossFit news in five minutes or less.My name is Ben Garves and today is Wednesday, the 3rd of June, 2020. Don't forget, links to all of these stories are in the show notes of your friendly neighborhood podcasting app, as well as on the new WODDITY.com.What to Know: Rogue Invitational Digital EventNot this weekend, but next weekend will be the digital version of the Rogue Invitational. 37 athletes, from Chandler Smith to Katrin Davidsdottir are participating, including 2019's Fittest Man and Fittest Woman on Earth, Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey. Cash prizes for athletes range up to $50,000 for first place finishers and the event can be live streamed on Rogue's YouTube channel. Now - what will this entirely digital event look like? Will it be pre-recorded workouts put side-by-side? Will athletes somehow all be simultaneously streaming workouts over a Zoom call? I have no idea. But if we know Rogue, we know it's going to be good. Stay tuned on the WODDITY Podcast for updates as we have them.CrossFit's Silence During Racial TurmoilOne of the most heartbreaking moments of yesterday's BlackoutTuesday was the ongoing silence of CrossFit, Inc. While hundreds of prominent CrossFit athletes and media members, brands, and nonprofits shared in the campaign, CrossFit was noticeably silent on the topic. It appeared to be business as usual for the organization, as they touted the launch of a new Twitter page and campaigned for a book that paralleled their health cause. Each day that passes is another opportunity for CrossFit to speak up against racial injustice in our country. They have the ears of millions of people around the globe. They've weighed in on everything from corruption in our nutritional guidance to the importance of gender equality and a transgender athlete's right to compete in the division of their true identity. We understand that this is not an easy topic and it may take time to find the right words. But continued silence from the organization will say tenfold about the future of the community and its relationship with racial diversity. In the community, I personally shared any BlackoutTuesday post from major athletes to WODDITY's Instagram story, which ended the day with over 100 blackout posts. Also a quick reminder - if you are an ally but not actively participating in protests, please avoid the use of the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag to make sure it is preserved for individuals organizing on the ground. Now Is a Time to Be Loud about InjusticeYesterday's event was a great start, but it's important to remember the work doesn't end with a moment of silence - there's real work ahead of us. It is no longer enough to just think “I am not a racist” - our ability to change the world depends on us speaking up and reaching out. If yesterday was a moment of silence for many, then let today-onward be a moment of LOUDNESS. If there's one good thing we can learn as a majority-white community in this moment, it should be that it is not okay to be quiet about racial injustice. It is our job, our moral responsibility, to be LOUD about this...

For full show notes: https://woddity.com/debating-racial-diversity-in-crossfit/So here we go. Diversity in the CrossFit community was a topic we worked hard to cover in the month of February and now it's back and for a much darker reason.Good morning and welcome to the WODDITY podcast for news about CrossFit. We are a daily podcast, Monday through Friday, doing CrossFit news in five minutes or less.My name is Ben Garves and today is Monday, the 1st of June, 2020. Don't forget, links to all of these stories are in the show notes of your friendly neighborhood podcasting app, as well as on the new WODDITY.com.Let's give you some background. In December I began reaching out to prominent members of the CrossFit community - 30+ athletes, hundreds of gym owners, top officials at CrossFit Inc., and some of the highest-profile members of former CrossFit Media staff. In total, one gym owner agreed to participate, two major members of the media, and four athletes. The rest were unresponsive, and so began the fall of the series. By the time February rolled around, the idea of a month-long series talking about diversity was in shambles. CrossFit's official stance was that I was gaslighting and shouldn't write about the topic. Both members of the media, after agreeing to participate, had stopped returning my messages. Every athlete I had spoken to, who seemed so excited to contribute, had ghosted me now that it was time to have the conversation. One man, Marcus Lowther, an affiliate owner, author, and now a person I consider to be a friend, had the courage to speak up, even when those with the greatest voices in the community didn't. As a side note, Lowther has some great fitness childrens books which can be found at cartoonfitcomics.com if you want to support him. He wrote in his blog (marcuslowther.com) Saturday about his experience with the world's reaction to George Floyd's horrendous death. He looks at Lyrics from the DJ Khalil song “Elevate”, which says “I gotta go high, I gotta elevate.” He pairs that with Michelle Obama's 2016 speech, quoting, “When they go low, we go high”, and he asks himself if there even is a high road right now. He writes, “We have posted protest videos and hashtags and donated to campaigns and fought for a bigger voice and created inspiring music and art and poetry. But here we are.”He talks about the parallels between this moment in America and the story captured by Todd Philips and Juaquin Phoenix in Joker. He says, much like Joker, America is standing on the hood of a police car, watching the anarchy and chaos it has unleashed.Lowther writes, “Forget the high road, let's just find an actual road.”It's hard to say there was one catalyst for why this conversation is now so important in the CrossFit community. It could be a decade of silenced voices finally able or willing to speak up. It could be the largely one-sided voice and evangelical moral leadership of some of our greatest CrossFit athletes and community members. It could be the political divide caused by that rift and the silence of a growing number of progressive gym members around the world. It definitely has something to do with the atrocity that was the death of George Floyd and hundreds if not thousands of police brutality cases in the United States, the racially-motivated atrocities that came out of Jim Crow laws as early as the 1860s, and let's just say it: the dark history of this country and slavery...

By 2028 it is Gretchen Kittelberger's goal to have functional fitness in the Olympics. How do you get a "new" sport into the Olympics? Very carefully. We dive into Gretchen's CrossFit Games experience, how she's a lawyer and actually worked for CrossFit, and how she created a non-profit organization to govern the sport of functional fitness. This episode almost turns into a "How I Built This" and it's an incredible story from a driven athlete. We dive into how Gretchen got her start in CrossFit, what it was like to be a lawyer for CrossFit Inc (and how many cease and desist letters she sent while working there), what steps are necessary to get a new sport into the Olympics, and more. Here's a quick breakdown of the show: How and when Gretchen competed in the CrossFit Games When she started the iF3 and what the process looks like The 6 categories of what functional fitness in the Olympics will look like: Aerobic Capacity Strength Body Weight Skill Mixed Modal Capacity Power Her non-profit organization had to create an International federation along with national federations (one per country). The iF3 has already had their first World Competition last year in 2017. This year the number of national federations has grown and Worlds will be held in October. Find out more about the iF3 on their website.

Shortly after the CrossFit Games crowned the Fittest on Earth in Madison, Wisconsin, CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman says CrossFit’s true purpose is curing chronic disease. Speaking with Executive Director of Media Sevan Matossian, Glassman explains that his original prescription was designed to challenge the best athletes on the planet, and then he backfilled the program for grandmas, so to speak. While the spotlight is often on the elite, Glassman knows his program can also help millions of people who are sick and overweight. “The best work of the affiliates is the reversal and prevention of chronic disease, not sending athletes to the Games,” Glassman explains. Glassman says that the CrossFit community has already attracted all the fit people and athletes, and the new market is the unfit, the broken and the sick—people who are literally dying for help. “If you only work with healthy people, that’s only 30 percent of the population. … Seventy percent are going to die from chronic disease. I’d like to have that market,” he says. To that end, Glassman is reorienting his staff to understand that CrossFit Inc. is in the business of curing chronic disease. “We need to make it clear—starting with us, then going to the affiliates, and then going to the 175,000 trainers, and then to all of their clients, everyone that CrossFits in the land, and then finally to the general public that isn’t CrossFitting—that we sit in unique possession of a solution so elegant to chronic disease that it may be optimal. The only thing missing is our awareness.” Chronic diseases are ravaging the world, and yet the conditions are curable. These self-inflicted diseases are caused by excessive consumption of carbohydrates and sedentarism. Luckily, they can be cured with two complementary steps: “The solution is get off the couch, get off the carbs.” CrossFit affiliates are uniquely positioned to lead a health revolution through diet and exercise, and Glassman says it’s as simple as approaching people and telling them the truth: “You’re fat. You’re going to die. I can help you.” Overall, Glassman has recognized that while his program produces people like Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey, its most important application is with people who are sick and dying. “We’re part of the disease economy, but we’re just the guys who make people well.”

"CrossFit Inc. mainostaa treenimetodinsa ylivertaisuutta kymmenen fyysisen ominaisuuden parhaana kehittäjänä.
