Een verrassing in de studio deze week. Niet 1 maar 2 gasten haha . De gasten waren wel erg eager, ze komen gewoon een week te vroeg. OK, blijf maar even hangen want de reis was van behoorlijk ver, maar volgende week gewoon maar terugkomen he. (wie weet weten jullie al wie het zijn op de 1e foto?) Wat overblijft was een fantastisch optreden van After Taste zanger Kevin Quilligan die de sfeer naar een hoog niveau wist te tillen.Met Kevin als frontman spat de energie sowieso al van het podium af (of in ons geval, in de studio)! En weet hij met zijn unieke stemgeluid en charismatische uitstraling een zaal – of radioshow – volledig in te pakken. Zo krijgen wij les in grunten. Het lesgeven is Kevin niet vreemd gezien zijn werk in The Metal Factory.After Taste staat bekend om hun gloomy doomy gothic rock. Wat is dat? Kevin legt het wel uit. De band groeit in populariteit, en wij zijn blij dat Kevin bij ons te gast is zo strak gepland rond de nieuwe release op 28-11 van de nieuwe single "Mind Over Body". We praten over het verleden dus ook de voormalige bands (als bijv Apophys), heden en de toekomst. Wij wensen familie en vrienden van Sam alle sterkte toe.Via Rutger's rad worden prangende vragen naast die van Ernst gesteld aan Kevin. En Sidney raast door de concert agenda. Jaja, je leest het goed want Ernst zijn "lievelingskinderen" zijn weer allemaal op het nest.

Computational neuroscientist and biomedical software engineer Balázs Szigeti, PhD. is on the podcast this week to talk about the science behind the increasingly popular practice of microdosing. Microdosing is broadly defined as the regular use of low-dose psychedelic substances such as LSD or psilocybin mushrooms. Distinct from psychedelic therapy or common recreational use, microdosing involves using only around 10% of a typical dose of the drug. Balázs has collaborated with the Global Drug Survey to quantitatively study drug use patterns, and most recently he designed and led the Imperial College self-blinding microdose study published in the open-access journal eLife Sciences. On this podcast, Balázs discusses the results of his study that examined whether psychedelic microdosing can improve cognitive function and psychological well-being. He reviews the existing clinical research on the topic and describes the innovative study design that enabled him to run the largest placebo-controlled study on psychedelics to date. For this episode, I had the pleasure of talking to professional Cross Country mountain biker Anton Cooper from New Zealand. At only 23 years of age, he has already set out to conquer the biking world by winning both the Junior and U23 World Championships, being the youngest winner of an U23 world cup of all time, and winning the Commonwealth Games 2014. After missing the Olympics 2016 due to chronic fatigue, he came back stronger than ever and in his latest world cup, placed second in the elite race by only an inch behind the current Olympic Champion. Jo Marchant Science Journalist Science journalist Jo Marchant set out in her book Cure: a journey into the science of mind over body, to find out more about the evidence for how our minds can influence our bodies. She tells us about some of the fascinating experiments that researchers are conducting into phenomena such as the placebo effect. How can we sometimes use the power of our minds to trick our bodies into feeling better, and what does this tell us about how the mind works?
One thing I’ve learned since doing this podcast - you never know how these conversations are going to go. But my favourite Looking Sideways chats are the ones that take on a life of their own, following their own conversational ebbs and flows. And episode 45, my conversation with ultra runner Ryan Sandes, is definitely one of those chats, For the uninitiated, Ryan is an ultra runner but you could also describe him as an adventure runner. He made his name on events such as the Four Deserts Series, in which competitors race 255 miles over seven days in separate races across the Sahara, Gobi, Atacama and Last Desert in Antarctica. He followed this by clocking wins in prestigious endurance events such as the Western States 100, and undertaking a succession of phenomenal endurance running feats that culminated in a Fastest Known Time (FKT in the parlance) attempt on a version of the Great Himalayan Trail with compatriot Ryno Griesel. That effort saw them race 1500km across the length of Nepal km in a time of 25 days, 4 hours and 24 minutes, battling frostbite, starvation, injury and harrowing mental challenges along the way. I was keen to find out the details of these feats, of course. But what I really wanted to explore was Ryan’s intimate knowledge of the relationship between physical pain and mental fortitude, and how athletes like this deal with the inevitable pain and hardships along the way. Ryan was as keen to talk about this as I was, and the result is a classic chat in the best Looking Sideways tradition, in which we delve into the specifics of an extraordinary way of life, and find out the reality of what it takes to operate at such a level. I know what it is like to avoid social situations because of the fear of feeling judged; I understand the humiliation of suddenly having a panic attack in public for no apparent reason; and I know what it is like to always be afraid of people seeing your anxiety and thinking that there is something wrong with you, or worse.I understand and I get it.Because I understand what it is like to have lived (past tense), with anxieties, and because I have tried a huge number of different tools and techniques myself and discovered what works and what does not – I can now offer people real help with real results for a better quality of life.I also understand that there is no one way to fix each person’s anxieties. We are all unique.
