Trail boss Duncan Ferris is on the podcast! Duncan Ferris has lived two MTB lives: from 4X racer and World Cup track builder to shaping the UK's most ridden bike park trails at BikePark Wales. In this episode, Duncan takes us from the Bristol BSX scene, to building World Cup 4X tracks like Schladming, Vigo and Villingen and finally chasing down the National Champs jersey after 20 years. We dive deep into trail building psychology, why braking bumps form where they shouldn't, why variety in a crew is essential and how riders unlock creativity on a trail. Plus Duncan shares the BikePark Wales origin story, the dream project that became Vanta with Red Bull and Laurie Greenland, wild tales of dynamite on trail builds and digging up grenades. Sara Hall has been competing at the highest level for nearly 30 years. She was the 2000 high school national cross country champion before earning 7-time All-America honors at Stanford University. Not only has she won 10 US National Championship titles, but she's the only American to win national titles in both the mile and the marathon. Her incredible range is also demonstrated by her gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in the steeplechase, while also being the second fastest American female marathoner with a time of 2:20:32. She was previously on the podcast when I interviewed 5 elite women on their preferred injury prevention and recovery strategies: https://strengthrunning.libsyn.com/160-5-of-the-worlds-fastest-women-on-injury-prevention-recovery Her memoir, For the Love of the Grind, is now available! For more resources on longevity and how to stay healthy, download our free Little Black Book of Recovery & Prevention. Thank you LMNT! A big thanks to LMNT for their support of this episode! If you're not familiar, LMNT is my favorite way to hydrate. They make electrolytes for athletes and low-carb folks with no Sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. I'm now in the habit of giving away boxes of LMNT at group runs around Denver and Boulder and everyone loves this stuff. Boost your performance and your recovery with LMNT. They're the exclusive hydration partner to Team USA Weightlifting and quite a few professional baseball, hockey, and basketball teams are on regular subscriptions. So check out LMNT to get a free sampler pack and get your hydration optimized for the upcoming season. Thank you MOBO Board! Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was recently at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is. Save 10% with code STRENGTHRUN10 at checkout at moboboard.com. Thanks to The Performance Training Journal! The Performance Training Journal is now available on Amazon and debuted as the #4 new release in the running category. Since I started running in 1998, I've kept a hardcopy training journal. Holding a tangible log, writing in it daily, and reflecting on the ups and downs of running is a surefire way to improve. This hardcopy training journal helps you focus on the training metrics that matter, prioritizes a long-term outlook so you don't take any shortcuts, and maintains your motivation with strategic self-praise. With a no-frills, functional design, the Performance Training Journal includes coaching advice on racing, injury prevention, strength training, and more. It will guide you through race scheduling, how to plan your race morning, the best workouts for endurance runners, and encourage you to track your personal bests over time. You have the space to make this journal your own whether you're a new runner or a professional, a trail or road runner, or a mid-distance specialist or ultra marathoner. So don't just track your running, learn from it with the Performance Training Journal! Check it out today on Amazon.
This week we FIRE UP and head to Mt. Pleasant and Central Michigan University for fun things to do this fall in this vibrant college town located smack dab in the middle of Michigan. This is always a type of homecoming for host John Gonzalez, as he graduated from CMU, and is a memeber of their Journalism Hall of Fame. You'll hear all about it, including a few trips down memory lane, on this special show. Our friend Chris Rowley is the Executive Director of the Mt. Pleasant Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and an expert on all things local for MP. Along with Jordan Ensing, Marketing Coordinator for the Bureau, she shares what makes this community special as well as fall activities. Insider tip: there is one last summer concert at Soaring Eagle Casino, Tim McGraw on September 26.Next, Gonzo got to meet and interview the brand new football coach for CMU, Coach Matt Drinkall, who joins us in Michigan direct from his last assignment as coach for the Army Black Knights. He is CMU's 30th head coach. He shares his insights for this season, as well as some of the very cool things this team is doing to reflect and honor the Native American heritage that is such a part of the Mt. Pleasant community, and this year will be reflected on the Chippewa's football uniforms. Coach also gives a shout-out to the Chip's of 1974, who were National Champs. Some people were clearly designed for thier careers, Gonzo is one, Marcie Otteman, Deputy Chief of Alumni and Constituent Engagement is another. This enthusiastic supporter, and CMU alumni 1987, shares all we can look forward to for CMU Homecoming 2025. There might also be reflecting on the good ole days at CMU, and the happy recognition that things are just getting better and better for the university. We recorded our show at a place that any CMU alumni knows well, O'Kelly's Sports Bar. We get to interview John Hunter, who's family has owned multiple establishments around Mt. Pleasant for decades. O'Kelly's, which is connected to sister business, and party palace, The Wayside, has been around for fifty years, and features all the college fun you could ever imagine. John shares why MP has been their community, and what makes working with CMU and students so great. Gonzo may or may not enjoy a very special, and very blue, drink from O'Kelly's during this segment. We just love these college town shows, especially in the fall, when the energy of fresh students on campus makes everyting incredible. A visit to Mt. Pleasant is perfect for this time of year.

Brayden Johnson landed his dream situation in 2024 when he signed a contract with a factory team. As a third-year U23 rider, it was a crucial opportunity on his way to the elite field. He had already shown his potential, winning National Champs and podiuming at World Cups. Soon after moving to Italy for the new team, however, Brayden started to notice some red flags. Before the end of the season, he was blacklisted from the team shortly before organization collapsed altogether. This year is his final year as a U23 and he's taking it on as a privateer. He has a lot on the line. The opportunities for U23s to continue racing in the elite field are few and far between, but by accepting the odds and preparing himself for any outcome, Brayden has found the freedom to go all-in. Payson sat down with him in Bentonville this week to talk about the coming season, when he realized that things had gone too far with his previous team, his long-time friendship with Riley Amos, and how he's taking things into his own hands this season.
