Kentucky basketball looks like a National Title contender after one game in the Bahamas. Yes I am overreacting. On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe breaks down Kentucky's 108-56 win over the Dominican Republic in the Bahamas. John Calipari wasn't coaching, but it didn't matter. The Wildcats rolled. UK had every newcomer show out in some way. Daimion Collins looked like a pro. He was getting to his spots and playing solid defense. Adou Thiero was way more comfortable than expected. Oscar Tshiebwe quietly led the team in scoring. Cason Wallace was phenomenal on both ends. Despite losing a couple of solid pieces, UK is just as long and as athletic as they were a season ago. Kentucky did a lot of great things in transition. Offensively, this was one of the most efficient teams in the country last season, and it looks like the Wildcats are going to have another really solid chance at being one of KenPom's top offenses once again. “A lot of people say, ‘Oh, I went D1,' but I like to say I went D3 because that's what was best for me.” We speed things up today by sitting down with Bella Hogue to hear about her 100/200 National Titles. Bella transferred from D1 Nebraska to Nebraska Wesleyan after her Freshman year citing it not being the right fit for her. She was drawn in by the perks and being able to say she went D1. However, growing up in a small town and graduating from a small high school, she realized being at a big state school wasn't right for her. She had spoken with the NWU coaches throughout the recruiting process and felt more comfortable there. She felt it was important to make sure you fit at your college and wanted to make a contribution to her team. And has she made a contribution! In her first year at NWU, she secured 3 National Titles and 1 4x4 All-American performance. On paper, you see a D1 Transfer winning at the D3 level and you'd think that makes sense. Bella wanted to focus on the 400 in college and dropped her 100/200 times from 12.72/25.98 to 11.57w/23.56. The future is bright for Bella and we're excited to witness it. The U.S. Women's National Soccer team boasts one of the most impressive dynasties in all of sports, with numerous World Cup Wins, Olympic Gold Medals, and more under their belts. Many elite players such as Mia Hamm, Allie Long, Crystal Dunn, and Jessica McDonald all went through the same Soccer program at University of North Carolina under the leadership of today's guest, Anson Dorrance. Coach Anson has been at the helm of the UNC's Women's Soccer program since its inception in 1979. Over his 45 years, he has achieved over 1000 career wins, 22 National Titles, and 22 ACC Titles, the first coach to ever win 20 titles in a single sport. In 1991 he led the U.S. Women's National Soccer team to victory in the first ever Women's World Cup, and set the standard for the U.S. Women's Soccer domination. For these accomplishments and more, he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2008. Currently, of every game he has ever played, Coach Anson holds a 90.5% win rate. It's safe to say he knows a lot about creating high performing teams. We sat down today with Coach Anson to take a deep dive into the three components of his program that he focuses on, to create high performing and high character team players that win. After many episodes, we welcome on our first thrower to D3 Glory Days! Monique Newton grew up in Sacramento, California playing a lot of different sports. Growing up, her mother instilled in her the importance of education and how it can be used to transform her life. There were times when Monique would come home to the electricity or the hot water being shut off. This shifted her focus toward Track and Field as she looked to college as a way to get to that next step in her education. Once at Oberlin, it took some time to transition to college but Monique was thriving in the ring. She had made her first Indoor National Meet as a Freshman and finished 4th in Shot Put at Outdoors. She credits her athletic success to the seniors at the time for taking her under their wing. By her Sophomore year, Monique was thriving in the classroom that would later lead to her Ph.D at Northwestern as well as in the ring. She finished runner up in Shot Put Indoors, was learning new events (Hammer and Weight Throw) and that outdoor was her first meet she earned two All-American Awards. The momentum continued to her junior year when she won a national title in Shot Put, becoming the first woman at Oberlin and on the track and field team to win a National Title. Yet the high didn't last long as she went on to have her worst National Meet during outdoors. She would rebound her senior year to have two runner-up performances in Shot Put and add another national title to her resume.
