Episode 56  Relays, recovery's, and racism.   On 5th August 1992, Derek Redmond tore his hamstring whilst running in the 400m mens semi final of the Barcelona Olympic games. This wasn't the first time Derek had endured Olympic injury heartache. However this time, his determination to finish the race, despite his injury, led to one of the most iconic Olympic images of all time. As Derek stood and hobbled round the track, his father joined him, and arm in arm, they crossed the finish line. The 65,000 supporters inside the Montjuïc Stadium stood and applauded the two brits in the purest sign of Olympic spirit. Whilst Derek is still remembered to this day for that iconic moment, there is an awful lot more to the man. Derek has a vivacious attitude to life, the competitive spirit encouraged by his Father from a young age, regularly comes spilling out.  We talk to Derek about his life as an Olympic athlete, that incredible day in Barcelona, and the tough period that followed. We also hear about the other sporting ventures in Derek's career, and how he managed to motivate himself to battle back time and again against injury setbacks. As Derek has explained during this series, that very fact that restoration is needed indicates that the things to be restored have not been in their right place and condition. Derek joined me this afternoon to discuss why communication is one of the most important things you need to put laser focus on, right now in the midst of this COVID-19 coronavirus thing we dealership people are trying to wrap our heads around. For starters, the consumer expectation has long since diverged from what dealerships (in general) are actually doing to communicate with the consumer, on the consumers' preferred terms. Consumers right now are scared and uncertain. If they reach out to a dealership, we need to be the rock for them to count on. Communication is key to be that rock! If you have a vendor that provides any communication service - which ones are they? Are you paying for it? Are you using it? Are you using it effectively? This relates to all communication streams. I know at Trader, we provide phone call tracking but maybe more importantly right now, we provide texting, chat and even managed chat in dealer packages. I have dealers who have them and chose not to activate them because they didn't have the time to learn them or weren't interested in holding their staff accountable up to now. I think the events we are experiencing are the perfect time to hit the reset button on that mentality. Call your product/service reps, ask if you have any services like that that you aren't using. Have them get you and your staff trained on them. Have a plan with expectations so everyone in the store knows what the plan and goals are in all communications. As Derek said, if your team is saying they need to get a customer into the store to move past a call or message communication - you may be dead in the water in this, the new world that we were just thrust into. Today on Just the Tips, Dean and I welcome Derek Gallimore, a serial entrepreneur who has really carved a niche helping businesses find savings via outsourcing. Derek came to outsourcing because he realized he couldn’t properly scale his business in London because of the salary costs. So he began looking around and found that he could save enormous amounts of money by sending work to the Philippines without seeing a dip in quality. Now he helps businesses do the same. This is a really fascinating episode of Just the Tips. When the bubble burst, Derek turned to outsourcing We started out hot, asking Derek, who’s been a serial entrepreneur for 20 years, about his highest high starting businesses. And he actually dipped into his roots buying and selling properties, and told us about selling one of his biggest properties, valued at $3 million, which now is a bit bittersweet. Soon after he sold that property, the financial crisis of 2008 hit, and suddenly it wasn’t as fun being in real estate anymore. But obviously Derek has bounced back and found a new path. How Derek got into outsourcing Juggling so many properties, Derek realized he needed to outsource his customer service. He ended up heading to the Philippines, and hiring one person there to help with customer service. But pretty soon his team was growing and growing, doing everything from customer service to web design to sales. He eventually built a team of 70 in the Philippines, and never looked back. And since then he’s discovered just how amazing outsourcing can be to scale your business, and has become passionate about helping others do the same. Busting myths about outsourcing Derek said that people often have a “polarized” view of outsourcing. One is that the people you’re outsourcing to are going to steal your ideas, or that it’s cheap labor that you can pay $2 an hour with no training. It’s either one or the other. But of course there are ways to protect yourself against the former and if you’re serious about outsourcing then you should have a plan for training to avoid the latter. As Derek says, if you do it right, you can save something like 70 to 80% of your salary costs by outsourcing. What sorts of jobs can you outsource? It used to be that entrepreneurs thought they could only outsource one function to another country: data entry. Maybe some customer service. But as Derek says, there are actually dozens of functions you can build a team around in the Philippines or elsewhere, and that many businesses have outsourced everything from graphic design to animation to artificial intelligence. So far, the Out-of-Order Podcast has focused on specific countries and the role they play in trying to stabilize, uphold, change, or transform the current international order. In the fifth episode, we take a different approach as we look at what role the military and hard power plays in shaping the international order. To discuss this and related issues, hosts Amy Studdart and Peter Sparding are joined by GMF Visiting Senior Fellow Shawn Turner and GMF Executive Vice President Derek Chollet. During the Cold War, the role of the military in underpinning the Western international order seemed clear. After the end of the Cold War, however, the mission of Western militaries seemed to change as NATO was looking for a new role and Western militaries primarily focused first on humanitarian interventions like in the Balkans and then, following the attacks on 9/11, on targeted military action fighting against terrorism and broad-scope wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Now, as the new U.S. National Defense Strategy (NDS) outlines, the focus of U.S. military policy seems to turn back to questions of strategic competition with other powers and the larger international order like we saw more so during the Cold War. Shawn and Derek lay out how the strategic environment has changed to necessitate these developments—changes that were well underway during the previous administration. In fact, they say that despite some of the changed rhetoric, there is a lot of continuity with regard to U.S. military posture under the Trump administration (which sounds like a bipartisan opinion given Jamie Fly’s take in our last episode). The question is raised as to how sustainable the current discrepancy between the policy priorities set in documents such as the NDS, which emphasizes the need to work with allies, and President Trump’s more brash approach to coalition building, including repeated clashes with allies. As Derek lays out the relative loss of superiority of the U.S. military vis-à-vis actors like China in areas such as AI, the discussion turns to the questions whether authoritarian powers such as China or Russia are helped in their ambition by their lack of adherence to certain liberal ideals which enable them push forward all-out-efforts in technology and certain policy areas. Naturally, the focus then shifts to Europe, as we analyze the important contribution of some European countries, while also pointing to the increasing divergence in capabilities between the transatlantic partners. Finally, we discuss whether too much is asked of the military as the it is increasingly put forward as a solution to more problems and the answer to ever more questions. Given the growing sentiment to focus on “nation building at home” on both sides of the Atlantic and the reluctance of Americans to engage in new large scale military interventions following the experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, how sustainable is the current approach?
