Paris. The City of Light. Paris. The City of Love and the capital of fashion. Also Paris is the city of Olympic dreams this summer. Over the last two weeks the eyes of the sporting world have been fixated on the city along the river Seine and everyone for the most part have been entranced with the competition and the spectacle that we know as the summer Olympics. In this edition of the Historically Speaking Sports Podcast host Dana Auguster looks back at the two previous Olympics to take place in Paris. The second summer Olympics in 1900 and the Eighth Summer Olympiad in the summer of 1924. Over the years, along with fierce competition and brotherhood through athletics, the Olympics have also been known for controversy - both on and off the field of play. Later in the episode we take a dive into some of the more controversial moments in the games that include, the Ben Johnson doping scandal during the 1988 games in Seoul, the Black Power salute during the 1968 games and one of the earliest Olympic scandals which took place during the games of 1912. Finally we will send a shout out to British runner Derek Redmond who was ultimately disqualified in his semifinal 400 meter race made him just as famous and as identifiable as the US dream team in those Olympics.

"Brian was in charge of team engagement. And it was interesting because he said 30 plus years ago, Brian was talking about things like empowerment, self-motivation, involvement, personal responsibility, voice and alignment." In this episode, I relay the remarkable story of Derek Redmond, a former 400-meter sprinter turned business coach, and his experience preparing for the Olympics in 1992. I talk about the importance of teams and team engagement, expanding your comfort zone, making small changes that can lead to greater results and self-awareness. DEREK REDMOND is a record-breaking 400M runner and one of Britain's most famous athletes. At the 1992 BARCELONA OLYMPICS, Derek was a favorite to win gold in the 400M. As he passed the 250 meter mark he tore his hamstring. Determined to finish the race he HOBBLED TO THE FINISH LINE with the HELP OF HIS FATHER as a 65,000-strong crowd cheered him on. Derek shares the details behind one of the most inspirational moments in Olympic history and offers his thoughts on GRIT, DETERMINATION and—his somewhat surprising—DEFINITION OF SUCCESS. Today's guest has arguably become the most famous Olympian to ever finish last in an Olympic race. At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Derek Redmond was amongst the favorites in the 400m semi-final. As he passed the 250m mark, the unthinkable happened: he tore his hamstring. Grabbing his leg and hobbling forward, Derek ultimately fell onto the track in agony. Determined to finish the race, he began to stumble towards the finish line, but not without the help of his father. Jim Redmond jumped over the stadium railing, dodged Olympic security, and raced to his son's aid. With a crowd of 65,000-strong, this race became synonymous with one of the most inspirational moments in sports. Join us as Derek details that tumultuous journey that led to the iconic moment at the 1992 Olympics as well as the lessons he's learned in perseverance, teamwork and self-belief. This conversation will leave you inspired you to never give up and to finish strong.
In the second part of this sermon, we learn that persevering in your faith can strengthen someone else in their faith and help them cross the finish line. 1) Being selfless and others-centered is something that Jesus and the bible talk about regularly, but it's difficult to put into practice. Why does Jesus prioritize loving others so much? What impact does helping and loving others have on you? 2) Phil shared a story of Derek Redmond, an Olympic runner who tore his hamstring halfway through the 400mfinal. As he's hobbling forward, trying to finish the race, his dad comes alongside him and helps carry him to the finish line. Phil pointed out that our role is to come alongside other Christians, and help them get to the finish line. Share a time when someone has come alongside you and helped you through a difficult time. What impact did that have on you? 3) What are the key practices and habits in your life that help build your own perseverance? And building on the question #2, what are some ways that we can help others to persevere?
“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” -Confucius Did you finish strong? Whether we view this question through the lens of how we conclude each of our days or how we cross the finish line at the end of our lives, finishing strong should be something for which we all strive. And one of the greatest examples I know of what it looks like to finish strong is British runner Derek Redmond. Let me explain...

Becoming Your Best | The Principles of Highly Successful Leaders
As Beijing hosts the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, feeling the Olympic spirit hovering around is inevitable. The athletes who spend four years training to compete for a couple of minutes, in some cases just seconds, are, at minimum, inspiring. The phrase "Citius, Altius, Fortius" pronounced by the Dominican priest Henri Didon before a school competition in 1881 was adopted by the games and slowly but surely, turned into an Olympic symbol, just like the Olympic flame and the Olympic rings. Citius, Altius, Fortius; faster, higher, stronger. The phrase sums up the Olympic spirit, and it is as inspiring as the athletes themselves. It pushes us to always give our best, work consciously and consistently to achieve our goals, and never surrender.Today's episode is about pouring the Olympic spirit into our personal and professional lives. We travel back to 2002 when the Tabernacle Choir performed John Williams' "Call of the champions" during the Winter Olympics to listen to its inspiring sound and take a moment to nurture our most profound desires of becoming our best. We also go through three of the most significant lessons we can learn from the Olympics and explore how to translate them into our lives. In addition, we remember two stories from the Olympic Games, Derek Redmond's heartbreaking ending in 1992 in Barcelona, and one of the greatest swimming comebacks of all time in Beijing, in 2008, when the US team conquered gold in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay.Tune in to Episode 316 and let the deep desire of overcoming obstacles and working every day to be your best version invade your life.In This Episode, You Will Learn:What can "Citius, Altius, Fortius" represent in our lives (4:03) Tabernacle Choir plays John Williams' "Call of the champions" (5:57) The three main lessons we can get from the Olympics (11:10) The story of Derek Redmond's 400 meters race (15:10) Jason Lezak and the greatest swimming comebacks of all time (19:18) Resources: The Tabernacle Choir's Olympic Opening Ceremony Connection Book: Malcolm Gladwell - Outliers: The Story of Success Derek Redmond's Emotional Olympic Story - Barcelona 1992 Olympics Beijing 2008 - The greatest swimming comeback of all time?
Derek Redmond was feeling confident in his medal quest during the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. He was one of the fastest in the world in his event, the 400 meters. But during his semi-final race disaster struck. It ended Derek's quest for a medal but it has left a legacy as one of the most memorable moments in modern.Olympic history.
At times life brings seasons of darkness. We have all been through one, or perhaps are currently struggling through one right now. The struggle is real! The struggle is hard, and it sucks! Have faith though my friend, today I talk about how it's when we are knocked down that we are perfectly positioned to rise up. It's when we fall, breakdown, or are a complete and utter mess that God can lift us back up and help us finish off our race. What's Coming This Episode? In the last podcast we were looking at people's fear of returning to the workplace and imposter syndrome. Alongside these fears is the fear of failure. I have been trying explain to people that what we see as failure may not actually be a bad thing, how else do we learn? In this episode I share some memories from past inspirational Olympic runners, I talk a little about "Can't Hurt Me" by David Goggins, and discuss finding your, "But What IF?".
Episode 56 Relays, recovery's, and racism. On 5th August 1992, Derek Redmond tore his hamstring whilst running in the 400m mens semi final of the Barcelona Olympic games. This wasn't the first time Derek had endured Olympic injury heartache. However this time, his determination to finish the race, despite his injury, led to one of the most iconic Olympic images of all time. As Derek stood and hobbled round the track, his father joined him, and arm in arm, they crossed the finish line. The 65,000 supporters inside the Montjuïc Stadium stood and applauded the two brits in the purest sign of Olympic spirit. Whilst Derek is still remembered to this day for that iconic moment, there is an awful lot more to the man. Derek has a vivacious attitude to life, the competitive spirit encouraged by his Father from a young age, regularly comes spilling out. We talk to Derek about his life as an Olympic athlete, that incredible day in Barcelona, and the tough period that followed. We also hear about the other sporting ventures in Derek's career, and how he managed to motivate himself to battle back time and again against injury setbacks. We also have an opportunity to ask Derek about his work trying to change the language we use when talking about racism, through his 'is this you' campaign. A key member of the relay squad that won gold at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, he competed at the highest level for over a decade.Alongside Kriss Akabusi, John Regis and Roger Black he then stunned the sporting world as Britain triumphed over the favourites USA to win gold. Their run remains the second fastest 4x400m run in history. At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, representing his country he became part of one of the most inspirational scenes in Olympic history. In the 400m semi-final Derek went into the race amongst the favourites but as he passed the 250m mark he tore his hamstring. Determined to finish the race he hobbled to the finish line with the help of his father as a 65,000-strong crowd cheered him on. With the average shelf life of an employee’s skills at less than five years, it is imperative that organizations support their employees in staying current in new and emerging skills and in learning how to learn. Learning management systems, once seen as a one-size-fits all learning solution, have not effectively kept pace with wider technology development, and the needs and expectations of workplace learning. Moreover, organizations tend to have too narrow a view when considering the elements that affect learning at their organization. An ecological and holistic approach is needed to improve learning environments and to future-proof these environments for new developments in education and technology. We are studying the Book of James. Today we are in Week 4: · James and the Power of Perseverance. · There are benefits in pressing on. The Christian life is a like a marathon. 1992 Barcelona Olympics. · After Derek Redmond tore his hamstring during the 400 meter semifinal his father came out of the stands to help him cross the finish line. · Derek Redmond persevered. He finished the race well. · https://www.dropbox.com/sh/vab3nrtuw3o1dip/AACu19imcelX0PU_AzNsOn02a?dl=0&preview=Derek+Redmond+1992.mp4 There are Biblical benefits of perseverance: · You will receive the Crown of Life · Perseverance Produces Character · Perseverance Brings God Glory We have been going through an in depth study on the book of James. To refresh your memory… · James was Jesus' half-brother. He was an eye witness of Jesus. · James was NOT a follower of Jesus while He was alive. Only AFTER watching Jesus die on the cross and then His resurrection did James believe. · James refers to the Sermon on the Mount more than 20 times. He had heard the words of Jesus and he remembered them. · James provides practical advice on how we should live the Christian life. · James is often referred to as the “Proverbs of the New Testament” The Central Theme of the Book of James is: · Faith should be about action – action that transforms lives. · James spurs the believer to have genuine faith during difficult times. · He doesn't say IF trouble comes your way BUT WHEN it does, that as Christians we will actually benefit from our troubles. James: · James was highly respected as a holy and righteous man. · He was the leader of the Jerusalem church for thirty years, even though other apostles lived there. · James was later martyred because of his faith in Jesus. James is writing to: · Jewish Christians, those who had been scattered throughout the Mediterranean world because of persecution. · They were no longer Jews. · They didn't fit in with the Romans or Greeks. · They were poverty stricken people, many were without jobs. · They were without social status and times were hard. A prayer for us: “Jesus You are welcome here. Help us Holy Spirit to hear the Word and apply it. When burdens seem unbearable help us to be stone cutters who continue to hammer away at the rocks in our lives. Without a single crack and then suddenly on the 101st blow the stone splits in two. Teacher, we know it wasn't the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before. Please help us to persevere under trails when they come. Thank You Lord. In Jesus Name, Amen. The message is found in James 1:9-16. 9Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business. 12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 16 Don't be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Today's message is titled: Steadfast Hope. We are going to dig deep into each verse. In these verses James is addressing two classes of people: The lowly and the rich. Class 1: The lowly brother. He is talking to a fellow believer. Christians would have been beaten or put in prison. Class 2: A warning to the rich that put their trust in their wealth. A man's life is not found in his abundance of things. · Riches will only last a short season · Such as a flower will only last a short season. It is the ‘flowering' to the ‘fading'. Poor or rich trials come to every life. Everything can be taken away in a trial. Our identity must be found in God. How do we live in tune with the LORD so when trials come we persevere? · We must be anchored, nailed to the floor. Verse 12 says: 12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. In verse 12 James is continuing his discussion from Verses 2-4: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trails of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Perseverance requires hard work. Several names of people in the Bible who persevered: Job: Through it all Job stayed true to God and his faith. The Apostle Paul: No one has a better conversion story, going from killing Christians to becoming one. · Paul faced many trials and persecutions because of his faith. Jesus is the ultimate display of perseverance until death. · Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The poor or rich will face trials and when we do, we are to rejoice. Some of you would say you're under a trial right at this moment. · The Word of the Lord is “hang in there,” persevere. Think about the battles you're in right now. · Now think about what it will look like to persevere, empowered by Jesus. James tells us that blessed is the one who perseveres under trials. We battle with an “I”. The “I” deserve this, “I” deserve that. Persevering faith. The LORD is the author of our faith. · He desires for us to ‘bear up' under trials, · To never abandon our trust in the LORD · Even if in a state of confusion, we are to hang on to the LORD. I want to tell you a personal story about Persevering faith. I was my mother's primary care-giver for 13 years. · Mom recently died. · She had Advanced COPD · Advanced Congestive Heart failure · A Fib · Aflutter · And she was blind the last 5 years of her life. It is easy for us to talk and to theorize about faith. But faith has to be lived. · Mom suffered much physical pain and often experienced the inability to get her breath. Through the trials, mom persevered. She proved her faith in the raging storms of her life: · During Doctor visits · Hospital visits and then extended stays · Especially when friends called her on the phone or visited. · Jesus was precious to mom BECAUSE of the raging storms. · LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN… Jesus was precious to mom BECAUSE of the raging storms. · She weathered the storms, and she finished strong. · She never complained about her life circumstances. · Mom LIVED her faith. She PERSERVERED. Always hold on to Verse 12: 12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial BECAUSE, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. Verses 13, 14, and 15: 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. These verses are telling us: · Temptation does not come from God. · The stresses of moral choice bring a “crown of life” when one faces them steadfastly, o But they can also raise questions in the mind. James tells us “Let no man who feels an impulse to commit sin say, I am tempted of God”. · God permits trials to make us strong, but He never entices us to do evil. · God is a holy God; His whole plan of redemption was designed to destroy sin. The world will say “The devil made me do it.” · But verse 14 says my ‘own' desires have tempted me. · It is a man's personal involvement and responsibility for sins committed. The issue is this: · We get to choose…perseverance or quitting. That's free will. · Here's the question: “Would I rather be free to have free will, tempted, and have the possibility of victory, or be a “good” robot? · The robot is without temptation and also does not know freedom or the challenges of conflict. · The robot knows nothing of the VICTORY of battles won. · The robot never knows love. Verse 15 tells us that Sin begins with a wrong thought. · Then action is taken to follow-through and grants consent of the will to act upon the sin. Verse 16: 16 Don't be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. This verse is saying: Do not wander so far in your thinking as to believe that any trial or any temptation comes from an evil purpose on God's part. James teaches that: · Paradoxical gifts of: Sufferings, trials and hardships CAN PRODUCE endurance and shape our character. God does not want us to be like: · Greenhouse plants, which are sheltered from tough weather, · BUT like storm-beaten oaks' · NOT like sand dunes that are driven back and forth by every gust of wind · BUT like Granite Mountains that withstand the fiercest storms. · Yet to accomplish this, He must take us into His testing room of suffering. God wants to use the trials in our lives to make us more like Jesus. · In fact they WILL make us more like Jesus – when we are steadfast in our faith. When you have made it through, you will get the crown of eternal life. Don't Limit God. Never Give Up. Nick Vujicic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_-HDkl_VWY Everyone please Close your eyes. Focus on God's love for you. Give him your trials, ask Him for strength. Claim Victory for your life. Let us Pray: When it hurts so much. Don't give up. Philippians 4:13 says: I can do all things through who strengthens me. God knows all things for each person in the congregation. We are facing all kinds of trials: Out of work, Relationship Problems, Sickness, You NAME IT and we got it. Ask God to help you persevere and choose to TRUST Jesus. Claim God's word: Jeremiah 29, 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jesus has good plans for your life. CHOOSE JESUS. TRUST Jesus! Great is His faithfulness today and forever.
