Welcome to today's show!    WHAT WE'LL LEARN   How Derek earliest memories were rooted in religion but his connectedness and place of belonging was found (and still is) in nature. While Derek was in active addiction he watched his brother, father, and mother pass away from complications due to alcoholism which threw him into a deeper state of depression. It wasn't until a suicide attempt, that Derek decided to put himself through rehab. Derek says as he passes his one year anniversary, routine & asking for help has been two great tools for healing. Derek talks about the shame and “feeling like a burden” when asking for help. How utilizing mentors instead of sponsors is what works for his recovery. What his perspective is on how to “reset your recovery.”  How he handles things that are out of his control-he gives examples from his own life. Derek discusses what he means by “slowing down to speed up.” What Derek's heartfelt message is to people who are in active addiction or newly sober during the pandemic. Tips on how Derek connects with others during the pandemic. What's Derek's message to the A.I.R. community.   RESOURCES MENTIONED   DerekJThatcher@gmail.com-Email Schedule a free consultation with me! Today’s show brings on Ryan Banta and Derek Hansen. Ryan Banta is a coach with more than 19 years of experience and the author of the Sprinter’s Compendium. At the high school level, Ryan has numerous state champions and finalists, and he is a frequent contributor to many top platforms in athletic performance. Derek Hansen is an International Sport Performance Consultant that has been working with athletes all ages and abilities in speed, strength and power sports since 1988.  After a long career as a university strength coach, as well as track and field coach, Derek now serves as a performance consultant to numerous professional teams in the NFL, NBA, MLS and NHL, as well as major NCAA Division 1 programs throughout North America. Both Ryan and Derek were very early guests on this podcast, and I’m happy to have them back to discuss a subject that I think has a lot of far reaching implications into one’s total performance program, which is “tempo training”.  Tempo is an age old method of sprint training, and generally refers to repeated, submaximal sprint efforts, such as 8x200m, or 5x300m, on relatively short rests, with limited recovery.  For team sports, it could mean running a series of shorter, but more numerous sprints, on incomplete rest intervals. Pendulums swing in all fields, and the sports performance field is no exception.  As with many tools, tempo has been abused by track and team sport coaches alike to the point where athletes do not make beneficial adaptations in power or maximal speed, so a reversal (such as what we see in systems such as Tony Holler’s) was well warranted.  It’s always important view training constructs from all sides, and talking with these two wise coaches is important to gain a greater understanding of this element of training, and its proper use.  Derek and Ryan get into the usefulness of tempo running for both physiological and technical adaptations, and then get into appropriate training prescriptions for track and team sport alike. Timestamps and Main Points 7:42 – A Question: “If you were running a sprint program for building absolute speed, would you pick strength training or tempo running outside of your short sprint practice?” 10:25 – The benefits and misconceptions of submaximal (60-70%) effort running 18:03 – Experimenting with volume and intensity in tempo running 24:12 – Building structure and capacity through circuits vs. submaximal running & Safe training for injured athletes 31:30 – Flooring/surface dependence for tempo running and circuits 33:47 – The significance of the type of athlete in volume in tempo running 40:51 – Implementing tempo running into team sport training 46:28 – Why coaches and trainers have moved away from tempo training in their sport preparation 50:23 – The role of specificity in tempo training 52:49 – Speed development in tennis preparation and the role of tempo sprint training 54:46 – How Derek prescribes tempo volumes in track and team sports 1:00:55 – Incorporating muscle dominance and intervals in tempo running & Making it relatable to the athlete 1:08:10 – Final advice on tempo running Quotes “Basically [tempo running] is just running with incomplete recoveries at a submaximal pace and, as we all know, this method is very frequently abused by a lot of coaches.” “Working at different velocities obviously gives you some flexibility around the effect you’re going to have in terms of energy systems and building foundations around the athlete.” “A tempo run with short recovery allows for the body to use that hydrogen ions or lactate as a fuel. It allows the body to increase its ability to buffer the waste so that you’re not necessarily using that workout to get bett...

In this eye opening conversation with Baijiu expert Derek Sandhaus, some of the topics we discuss include: What Baijiu is - which might seem like a simple definitions game, but it’s way more interesting than that. How Derek came to spend years in China studying the culture and learning as much as possible about Baijiu and the people who make and enjoy it. What sort of microbial magic needs to happen in order to produce liquid alcohol from a solid fermentable mash - and to that end, what Baijiu shares in common with other spirits like open fermented Mezcal and dunder-fortified Jamaican rum. We talk about two of Derek’s books, Baijiu: The Essential Guide to Chinese Spirits and Drunk in China, the most recent of the two. We give you a crash course in the most popular styles of Baijiu and the regional cuisines they evolved to complement and then talk about where Baijiu might be heading in the coming years and decades. We imagine what it would be like to share a bottle of Baijiu with legendary 8th Chinese drinker and poet Li Bai. And much, much more. Derek is a fascinating guy to interview, and the amount of time he’s spent researching and immersing himself in Chinese culture is a huge asset because the things he shares don’t feel purely academic. They’re based on real things he’s tasted, real places he’s visited, and real people whom he’s learned from.

This week on MIA Radio we turn our attention to veterans, service members and military families. MIA has recently launched a new resource for military veterans which will provide news, personal stories and resources specific to veterans and their families. So to explain more about the new resources I am delighted to have been able to chat with Derek Blumke. Derek is the newest member of the MIA Team and he is the editor of the new veterans section. Derek served 12 years in the US Air Force and Michigan Air National Guard before attending the University of Michigan where he cofounded Student Veterans of America. For his work, Derek received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award and was recognised at the White House by President Barack Obama for his leadership in supporting returning military veterans. To listen and subscribe to the Mad in America podcast on Apple iTunes, click here. Listen also on Spotify, YouTube or Google Podcasts. We discuss: Derek’s time in the US Air Force and Michigan Air National Guard which saw him deployed to Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. How, following his service years, he transitioned to Community College in 2005 and then went on to the University of Michigan. How he came to feel that veterans were often isolated on campuses and this drove him to set up an organisation to provide support and connection for ex-service members, which became Student Veterans of America. That SVA is now the largest student organisation in the US and also the largest organisation of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in the country. That during his three years running SVA, Derek became involved in legislative action to help send military service members to college (the Post-911 GI Bill). How veterans face unique challenges but shouldn’t be viewed as somehow broken or in need of specific support. That it was post-service experiences that led to Derek’s realisation that our approach to mental health could be leading to damage and harm. How Derek came to set up a tech company which he describes as ‘the most stressful and challenging time of his life’. That these stresses and strains led to being prescribed psychiatric drugs, initially Adderall but later having Ambien and Gabapentin added and eventually Zoloft too. How the side effects of this cocktail rendered Derek barely able to function and led to him moving back to Michigan. That he stopped socialising, stopped posting on social media and his social circle reduced because of the effects of the drugs. How these experiences led to questioning and some research and how he withdrew from five drugs over a month, with the most issues coming from the antidepressant Zoloft. His description of withdrawal effects including tinnitus, brain zaps, nausea, fatigue, anxiety and extreme dizziness. That he came to read the New York Times article: ‘Many people taking antidepressants find they cannot quit’ and realised he was in acute withdrawal. That it ultimately took Derek a year to come off the Zoloft. How he discovered Mad in America and realised that the messages in the mainstream mental health world do not do justice to the experiences that people are having with psychiatric drugs. How Derek got involved with MIA and came to lead our news veterans initiative. The suicide epidemic that has so severely affected the veterans community and how it results in more deaths than casualties from recent conflicts. That he hopes that the MIA veterans initiative will be seen as the equivalent of Yelp for veterans who want to read personal accounts and learn from unbiased and alternative sources. That Derek is starting a new non-profit: Walk There, which is designed to get people together to walk in their local area. Relentless Health Value

Bad things have a propensity to occur in health care when patients are placed on a trajectory and then simply follow the yellow brick road—to an Oz potentially filled with unnecessary surgeries, MRIs that cost 10 times what they should, low-quality providers chasing RVUs (relative value units) like their paychecks depended on it … I could go on. Today I speak with Derek Winn, cofounder at Distilled Concepts and consultant at the Business Benefits Group. His distilled advice is to recognize that every transaction with the health care system is a waypoint on a larger journey—and also an opportunity to pause and ask questions. Payers of health care have a profound opportunity and perhaps growing obligation to help employees/members/patients, first of all, to recognize that a “look both ways before you cross the street” modus operandi is safer from both a monetary as well as an actual patient safety standpoint. Derek and I discuss the ways to make this happen, when/if it will become standard operating procedure, and the likely impact on providers and insurance carriers and Pharma if employers choose to take this route. By the way, BUCA stands for Blue Cross, United, Cigna, Aetna, and Anthem. We use this acronym in the interview. You can learn more by contacting Derek on LinkedIn atDerekWinn or by visiting distilled-concepts.com. Derek Winn is a lead consultant at the Business Benefits Group, where he has consulted clients regarding employer-sponsored benefit programs for nearly the past decade. More recently he is a cofounder of Distilled Concepts, a newly created organization that is purpose built to provide more advanced advisory and consulting exclusively for employers of intention and also to counsel on solutions from the industry as a whole. When supporting health plans for clients, they work exclusively with self-insured employers or serving as a bolt-on adviser for the eventual transition to a self-funded health plan, providing distilled client education and strategy. Derek has been recognized as a Rising Star in Advising by Employer Benefit Adviser magazine and interviewed in Managed Care magazine, and he has also been a contributor to BenefitsPRO magazine. When it comes to social media, he is most active on LinkedIn. When not addressing and tackling health care concerns for employers, Derek enjoys spending time with his wife and children at home, which doubles as a hobby farm, in Virginia. 02:13 How employers can intervene to get their employees to the right doctors and health system. 04:10 “Health care’s a journey.” 04:25 How Derek connects with employees and employers at waypoints. 05:35 Finding ways to reconnect with the patient. 06:11 What a concierge approach looks like. 08:38 What this model looks like. 11:53 Fixed costs vs variable costs. 13:59 What health plans think about employers taking this initiative. 15:22 “Who has leverage?” 19:18 “Where’s the incentive for an insurance company to … [stand] with [the] patients?” 23:10 “Change takes a long time for a hospital, but … employers can move pretty quickly.” 24:43 Showing where the value is vs setting price points. 26:58 HTA—Health Transformation Alliance. 27:17 P&T committee—Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee. 28:26 “Are we causing undue harm?” 29:29 The spectrum of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and the ones to consider. Today on Just the Tips, Dean and I welcome Derek Gallimore, a serial entrepreneur who has really carved a niche helping businesses find savings via outsourcing. Derek came to outsourcing because he realized he couldn’t properly scale his business in London because of the salary costs. So he began looking around and found that he could save enormous amounts of money by sending work to the Philippines without seeing a dip in quality. Now he helps businesses do the same. This is a really fascinating episode of Just the Tips. When the bubble burst, Derek turned to outsourcing We started out hot, asking Derek, who’s been a serial entrepreneur for 20 years, about his highest high starting businesses. And he actually dipped into his roots buying and selling properties, and told us about selling one of his biggest properties, valued at $3 million, which now is a bit bittersweet. Soon after he sold that property, the financial crisis of 2008 hit, and suddenly it wasn’t as fun being in real estate anymore. But obviously Derek has bounced back and found a new path. How Derek got into outsourcing Juggling so many properties, Derek realized he needed to outsource his customer service. He ended up heading to the Philippines, and hiring one person there to help with customer service. But pretty soon his team was growing and growing, doing everything from customer service to web design to sales. He eventually built a team of 70 in the Philippines, and never looked back. And since then he’s discovered just how amazing outsourcing can be to scale your business, and has become passionate about helping others do the same. Busting myths about outsourcing Derek said that people often have a “polarized” view of outsourcing. One is that the people you’re outsourcing to are going to steal your ideas, or that it’s cheap labor that you can pay $2 an hour with no training. It’s either one or the other. But of course there are ways to protect yourself against the former and if you’re serious about outsourcing then you should have a plan for training to avoid the latter. As Derek says, if you do it right, you can save something like 70 to 80% of your salary costs by outsourcing. What sorts of jobs can you outsource? It used to be that entrepreneurs thought they could only outsource one function to another country: data entry. Maybe some customer service. But as Derek says, there are actually dozens of functions you can build a team around in the Philippines or elsewhere, and that many businesses have outsourced everything from graphic design to animation to artificial intelligence. The key is communication, and defining the role. And how do you find the right people? Derek has tons of advice and, dare we say, tips for how to get it done right. Derek Sorensen, Pyrofex Research Mathematician Derek Sorensen is a Pyrofex Research Mathematician, has an MSc in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Oxford and is set to start his PhD this fall at the University of Cambridge, where he will study logic and topology. "I'm a motivated mathematician who wants to solve new and exciting problems. I thrive in a challenging and changing environment, as a boring routine can seem a bit soul-sucking to me. I have learned programming languages, software programs, organizational structures and spoken languages in the past to solve problems and am willing to learn about anything to address new and changing circumstances I'm placed in. Challenges are exciting to me and I'm always looking for something bigger and better to sink my teeth into." Source On this episode of LAB Radio, Aaron Mangal asked Derek all kinds of deep math questions like: What are proofs and algorithms? What are they for? What are some non-crypto use cases and of course what are the Crypto uses?  Who is Pyrofex? A Utah-based Blockchain Startup Founded by ex-Googlers As stated on their website:  "Pyrofex Corporation is Utah Valley’s first blockchain and cryptocurrency startup. With its headquarters in the Riverwoods area of Provo, UT, Pyrofex has grown from a pair of co-founders to a team of around two dozen professionals. Our focus is on reliably delivering high-quality work and our reputation bears that out. CDelta is a Blockchain built on their custom-made protocol, Cassanova CDelta is a proof of stake based Blockchain focused on high speed transactions and throughput for financial transactions. They custom built Cassanova, a leaderless optimistic pre-Nakamoto consensus protocol which is what CDelta runs on.    "Pyrofex introduces Casanova, a leaderless optimistic consensus protocol designed for use in the blockchain contexts. Casanova produces blocks in a directed acyclic graph (DAG) rather than in a chain and combines voting rounds with block production by singling out conflicting transactions. C∆’s physical network achieves unparalleled performance by mirroring the shape of the Internet itself. Using a tiered network architecture, local validators connect to backbone validators with guaranteed priority bandwidth. Using this architecture, C∆ ensures the fastest block propagation and the lowest transaction confirmation latencies. C∆ is unique among blockchains. Most blockchains are stuck finding a total ordering of all the world’s transactions. This process is very slow because every block requires an expensive consensus-finding protocol. Using Casanova and a simple UTXO transaction model, the C∆ blockchain eliminates this work and finalizes most transactions immediately. Only when a user attempts to double-spend does C∆ perform expensive and slow consensus finding. As a result of this innovation, C∆ confirms most transactions at wire speed. An attacker can only make his own transactions slower, but cannot materially affect the throughput of the rest of the network." Today we are talking to the man behind Marathon Investigation, a website that seeks to “out” the cheaters of the running world. Derek is himself a runner, has done 11 marathons. The podcast covers how Derek ensures that there are not issues with the data he is seeing/using from race timers/directors before he publishes a report on those who he believes have cheated. We also discuss why he believes people are engaging in this behavior and how social media has both increased the prevalence and made it easier to identify who might be doing so. This podcast also discusses the controversy behind transgender runners and the issues that surround their ability to participate in races. This podcast is a wide ranging discussion of some of the issues around the impact of cheating on racing and what each of us can learn from the cheaters being reported and how we can help be vigilant when we see infractions happening around us and reporting it to the race directors. Today’s Guest Derek Murphy, a financial analyst, father and runner, is the person behind the website Marathon Investigation. What you will learn about: Who is Derek, the man behind the website. The goal of the website is to bring out and identify those who cheat in races, originally to call out those who cheat to qualify for the Boston Marathon but has expanded to other race distances and types and to exposing those who cut a race to reach the podium. How cutting the course is only one way to cheat, others include trading or selling bibs. How Derek was surprised at how easy it was for him to look at race data and determine people were cheating. It spurred his interest in trying to identify those who were trying to profit from others or stealing from someone else. He tries to follow those he suspects to see if there is intent to defraud vs those who cut a course because they are fatigued or not well. How sometimes people themselves prove they cheated by posting their Strava data that clearly shows they didn’t run the entire race. Or clearly shows they have edited the data. Why Derek believes that despite it appearing it focuses on the negatives of the sport, those who benefit but actually then getting into a race like Boston makes it worthwhile. He also has begun to try to balance the negative by reporting on positive stories related to running like charities involved in running to helping people disqualified by mistake get their results corrected. Why Derek decided to cover the issue of transgender runners qualifying for Boston and how difficult it was to balance the discussion so that the issue received the attention it deserved with making sure the intention came across properly. How important language/terminology was to the discussion and how it caused the runners concern over their safety during the race itself. We cover the mass cheating that happened at the Mexico City Marathon/Half Marathon, over 3,000 runners out of roughly 28,000 were disqualified this year and Derek says the real number cheating was over 5,000 and the officials are under-reporting the totals. The impetus was the medal series and runners coveting the medals and being willing to cheat to get them. Inspirational Quotes: The part I hate the most is writing the articles but reporting things to the race directors was not effective at making the practice stop. At most I probably write about 10% of what I notice, the rest I do simply report it to the directors and move on. How Adding Relational Value Can Build Your Business, with Derek Coburn

Real Relationships, by Contactually

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 15, 2017 39:43

When you can add relational value to the people in your circle you discover doors open for you like never before. Derek Coburn is one of the people I’ve noticed adding true relational value to the lives of his clients and others he meets. He’s become so convinced that is the best way to build a personal and business network that he’s begun his own organization to host events that bring people together and add value to their lives. You can hear Derek’s philosophy of how networking was not working, what he did to change the model, and the incredible results he’s had as a result - it’s all on this episode of Real Relationships. Why you need to be of greater value to your clients than the service you do. Many business owners provide a service or product to their clients, which means the reality they need to accept is that they are very much a commodity to their clients or customers. That means the moment a similar product or service comes along that offers a lower price or new bell or whistle, you could become expendable. How do you change that? By adding relational value to your clients and customers - by building relationships with them that matter. On this episode, Derek Coburn tells us how he’s done that and how impacting and powerful it’s become in his life and in the lives of the many people he’s been able to connect with others over the years. The core of great relationships is the feeling people have toward you. Long-term, successful businesses are built on relationships. And you build the relationships by adding value to them, by providing things, experiences, resources, introductions to your clients that go far beyond what you actually do for them. That way you become a valuable resource, a go-to person who connects them with things that are truly helpful to them. They value you because they value what you add to their lives - and that's a feeling they have about YOU. You can learn how to think about this relational value approach to networking from Derek Coburn, a master networker, author, and financial advisor, on this episode. In a commodity type business, you need to provide more than just your commodity. Once you recognize that business with your regular clients could be at risk simply because they might see you as nothing more than a commodity, it’s time for you to begin making a bigger impact in their lives - and that comes through adding relational value to them. You need to figure out the ways you can add incredible value to them, beyond what a normal “company” or service provider might do. It’s the best way to stand apart from your competition and ensure that your clients never WANT to leave you. Find out how from Derek Coburn, on this episode. If you want to build a relationship with someone influential, you’d better be thoughtful about it. One of the best things you can do for your existing clients and customers is to introduce them to people you know that they need to know. But that requires that you are continually building relationships with influencers and high profile people who can truly BE an asset to your clients. On this episode of Real Relationships, Derek Coburn gives his advice about how to go about reaching out to the busy people you want to meet - and how to do it the smart way. You don’t want to miss it. Outline of this great episode [0:34] My introduction of Derek Coburn and why he’s on this episode of Real Relationships. "How can we turn observations into action?"- Derek Sivers I'm so thrilled to have the privilage of interviewing today's guest on the Art of Adventure. He has been a mentor to me for many years, and he rarely grants interviews, so I take it as a huge honor to have Derek Sivers on the show! Plus, this is the first time another Derek has been on the podcast! I've been following the Derek's work for many years. Often, he will end a blog post by extending an offer to email him directly with questions. I first sent him an email more than five years ago and we have been in touch since then. Originally a professional musician and circus clown, Derek created CD Baby in 1998. It became the largest seller of independent music online, with $100M in sales for 150,000 musicians. In 2008, Derek sold CD Baby for $22M, giving the proceeds to a charitable trust for music education. He is a frequent speaker at the TED Conference, with over 5 million views of his talks. Since 2011 he has published 34 books, including “Anything You Want” which shot to #1 on all of its Amazon categories. I finally got to meet Derek at his home while I was visiting Wellington, NZ in May. Derek is one of the greatest philosophers of our day, and has clear thoughts about careers, propose, learning, and being of value to the world. One interesting fact Derek reveals in this episode is that despite being an introvert, he went so far as to hold 500+ 1-on-1 get togethers while living in Singapore with people that wanted to learn from him. In this episode talk about building a career that makes you happy, how to learn from your work, compressing books into directives, how to get rich, mentorship, introversion, CD Baby, and global citizenship, and some of the adventures that Derek has had that helped him change his mind about Indonesia and weight lifting. ITS THE BIG DAMN PODCAST! We talked to the founder of Lift Big Eat Big: Brandon Morrison. This one of the most fun podcasts we’ve had. Brandon was a delight and really gave us some new insights into the sport of STRONGMAN, building real strength and how CrossFit and specialization don’t need to be mutually exclusive. We COULD give a quick synopsis, but we frankly talk about too much damn stuff, so here’s a bullet list. Why Brandon Morrison doesn’t like being called “Bro”. What he really means when he calls you “Chief”. How Derek watches “Biggest Loser” for all the wrong reason. Why we all hate running and why it’s bad news for power athletes. Why a strict Paleo or Low-Carb diet may not be your path to ultimate fitness. Brandon and I disagreeing about the existence of zombies. The difference between training for STRONGMAN and training for CrossFit with Strongman events. The joy of being called “obese” and “skinny” in the same day. Why protein shakes ata  competition are pointless. The psychology of being destroyed by your workouts. (and why it may be ruining your progress) Discussions about why “The Hound” would make a good drinking buddy, but you should be training to be “The Mountain”. Why the spartans were assholes. (and slave-owners and kid-touchers) Are “Hybrid” and “Light weight” strongman events expanding or diluting the sport? Overcoming the “good ol’ boys” mentality of fringe sports and getting past the “back in the old days” bullshit. Creating an entry point for smaller athletes, because not all of us can lift 400lbs on our first day in the gym. The way the sport of fitness changes as you get heavier. What it means to be the “Little Buddy Helper” in the gym. The openness of CrossFitters and why that can be their greatest strength and greatest weakness. A series of dares or physical challenges are not the same as programming. The official end of bacon and leg day jokes. Eating 52 eggs and White Russians as a hangover cure. Eating until you fall asleep. Why the rounded-back dead lift may actually save your spine. Stupid people on comment threads (so, MOST of them). Shaking the tree of your own community to see how many idiots fall out. and… Not pooping. http://www.liftbigeatbig.com http://shopliftbigeatbig.com/ http://www.startingstrongman.com http://www.truenutrition.com/
