De 'Asus ROG Xbox Ally X' is een hele mond vol, maar als je de naam eenmaal kan uitspreken, praat je over de allereerste gaminghandheld van Xbox. Dat klinkt spannend en als een grote stap voor Microsoft, maar eigenlijk zie je de invloed van Xbox alleen terug in de handgrepen en het speciale Xbox-knopje dat op het apparaat is geplakt. Verder geldt de Asus ROG Xbox Ally X vooral als opvolger van de Asus ROG Ally X. Niels Kooloos bespreekt het apparaat met Nina van den Dungen en Bas van Werven in deze Schaal van Hebben. De handheld is in opmars, vooral met dank aan Nintendo die in 2017 met de Nintendo Switch op de proppen kwam. Ondertussen geldt de opvolger, de Switch 2, als de snelst verkochte spelcomputer ooit, maar dat weerhoudt andere game-bedrijven er niet van met pogingen om marktaandeel weg te snoepen. Asus doet dat al een aantal jaar met de Ally-serie, waarvan de Asus ROG Xbox Ally X als laatste wapenfeit geldt. Xbox zit duidelijk in de naam en nog duidelijker in alle marketing, maar toch kan je het apparaat geen échte Xbox-handheld noemen. Tuurlijk, je kan op de speciale Xbox-knop drukken om de Xbox-app te openen, waarmee je makkelijk al je favoriete games kan spelen, maar dat kan in principe op alle handhelds - mits die het Windows-besturingssysteem hebben dan. Daarom geldt de Asus ROG Xbox Ally X vooral als de volgende generatie Ally-handheld van Asus die toevallig in samenwerking met Xbox is ontwikkeld. Die heeft dan ook een krachtigere chip van AMD die ruim 30 procent meer vermogen levert, volgens Asus. Daar is niks over gelogen, want ook de zwaarste games draaien zonder problemen op de Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, terwijl de voorganger daar duidelijk meer moeite mee had. Wel heeft het apparaat nog altijd dezelfde problemen als andere handhelds: tijdens een flinke gamesessie wordt hij nogal warm, is de batterij binnen een uur of drie leeg, en blazen de ventilatoren hard om te koelen. Maar die problemen hebben alle handhelds dus, waardoor de Asus ROG Xbox Ally X toch één van de beste handhelds van dit moment is. Daar betaal je alleen wel wat voor: 899 euro. Voor de kleinere portemonnee is er nog de minder krachtige variant: de Asus ROG Xbox Ally (zonder de X dus), voor 599 euro. Alleen mis je dan wel de krachtigere chip, heb je minder werkgeheugen, en krijg je minder ruimte om games te downloaden waardoor alternatieven van de concurrentie een stuk aantrekkelijker worden. Eigenlijk is dit zelfs een evolutie van hun ROG Ally X, maar dan met meer Xbox-achtige elementen én een nieuwe interface. Stern des Südens Die FC Hollywood-Dokumentation ist ein spannender und emotionaler Blick hinter die Kulissen des FC Bayern München. ASUS investiga errores de firmware que causan tartamudeo en sus portátiles ROG lanzadas entre 2021 y 2024  Por Félix Riaño @LocutorCo     Escucha esta historia completa en el en pódcast Flash Diario.ASUS reconoció que varios modelos de sus laptops ROG —incluyendo Strix, Scar y Zephyrus— lanzados entre 2021 y 2024 presentan fallos que interrumpen su rendimiento. Durante años, dueños de estos portátiles reportaron tirones constantes, microcortes de audio y congelaciones del cursor. Muchos pensaron que se trataba de problemas de Windows o de los controladores gráficos, pero el error resultó estar más profundo. En septiembre de 2025, un ingeniero conocido como Zephkek publicó en GitHub y Reddit un análisis técnico minucioso que lo demostró: los tartamudeos no eran imaginarios, ni culpa del sistema operativo. Estaban en el código del BIOS de ASUS, en lo más interno del firmware que controla la energía y las interrupciones del procesador.  El estudio de Zephkek reveló una verdadera “cascada de fallos de firmware” que llevaba años escondida. Al usar herramientas como LatencyMon, el ingeniero descubrió que las laptops ROG ejecutaban rutinas defectuosas que bloqueaban un núcleo del CPU durante más de 13 milisegundos y apagaban la GPU dedicada cada medio minuto, incluso cuando debía permanecer activa. Este hallazgo fue tan detallado que saltó de los foros técnicos a los titulares de medios como Tom's Hardware, PC Gamer, Notebookcheck y HotHardware. En cuestión de días, el tema pasó de ser un rumor entre usuarios a un caso internacional que expuso errores estructurales en millones de portátiles vendidas entre 2021 y 2024.  La noticia obligó a ASUS a romper su silencio después de cuatro años de quejas.  El 17 de septiembre de 2025, ASUS publicó un comunicado oficial: admitía que estaba investigando “interrupciones de rendimiento” en varios modelos ROG. Días después, el 26 de septiembre, anunció que había localizado la causa en su firmware y que lanzaría parches de BIOS. Fue un giro importante: por primera vez, la marca reconocía públicamente un fallo en su código interno. Durante años, las quejas en foros y redes sociales habían sido desestimadas o tratadas como casos aislados. Pero la evidencia presentada por Zephkek era imposible de ignorar. Su documentación detallada incluía trazas del sistema y desensamblados del BIOS que demostraban dónde estaba el error.  El fallo estaba en una sección del BIOS que debía manejar interrupciones del procesador. Allí, ASUS había incluido funciones de pausa, conocidas como sleep, que bloqueaban el CPU en momentos en que debía estar respondiendo en tiempo real. Además, el firmware intentaba apagar la GPU discreta cada 30 segundos, aun cuando era la única activa. Esa combinación causaba microcortes regulares, audio distorsionado, y en casos extremos, pantallas azules. Los usuarios afectados habían pagado entre 2 000 y 3 000 dólares por portátiles de alto rendimiento que tartamudeaban incluso al reproducir un video en YouTube. La frustración era generalizada y, hasta entonces, sin solución oficial.  En respuesta a la presión mediática y comunitaria, ASUS actuó. A finales de septiembre comenzó a publicar BIOS beta para los modelos ROG Strix Scar 15 (G533ZW) y Zephyrus M16 (GU604VI) de 2023, confirmando que el problema estaba efectivamente en su firmware. Las primeras pruebas mostraron mejoras notables: los stutters disminuyeron y el rendimiento volvió a ser fluido. ASUS aseguró que estos parches no invalidaban la garantía y prometió versiones finales para todos los modelos afectados. En octubre de 2025, la compañía inició el despliegue completo de actualizaciones de BIOS, por oleadas, para corregir el error en todas las laptops ROG vendidas entre 2021 y 2024. Tras cuatro años de quejas, llegó la reparación que muchos ya habían dado por imposible.  La documentación de Zephkek demostró que el código defectuoso provenía de una rutina llamada ECLV, encargada de procesar eventos del controlador embebido. Esa función incluía bucles de espera que bloqueaban un núcleo entero, generando las latencias registradas. En paralelo, otra rutina gestionaba mal el cambio de modos de GPU (Optimus y MUX), intentando apagar la tarjeta dedicada cuando no debía. Este error se repetía en múltiples generaciones de portátiles, lo que explica por qué modelos tan distintos como el G15 Advantage de 2021 y los Zephyrus de 2023 mostraban los mismos síntomas. El análisis técnico fue tan convincente que expertos como Matthew Garrett lo calificaron como un “caso de estudio en diseño de firmware defectuoso”. ASUS respondió con un plan de correcciones escalonado que continúa en octubre de 2025 y promete restaurar la fluidez que siempre debieron tener los equipos.  La historia de los stutters en las laptops ROG pasará a la memoria como un ejemplo de cómo la comunidad técnica puede cambiar el rumbo de una gran empresa. Un solo investigador independiente, armado con paciencia y datos, logró lo que miles de quejas no habían conseguido: que ASUS reconociera y corrigiera su error. De 'Asus ROG Scar Strix 18' is een hele mond vol, maar als je de naam eenmaal goed kan uitspreken in de winkel, krijg je wel één van de krachtigste gaminglaptops die er op dit moment is. Alleen moet je wel geluk hebben dat het apparaat ook op voorraad is. Waarom dat niet altijd het geval is, hoor je van Niels Kooloos in de Schaal van Hebben. Aan de ROG Scar Strix 18 hangt een flink prijskaartje van 4299 euro, mits die dus überhaupt in de schappen ligt. Door de enorme vraag naar de befaamde en krachtige RTX 4090-videookaart van Nvidia, is de laptop zo'n beetje altijd uitverkocht. Dat lijkt bovendien ook niet bepaald minder te worden met de komst van de volgende generatie Nvidia-chips voor gamers. Onder de motorkop van de Strix 18 zit de nieuwste i9-processor van Intel. Die zorgt er samen met de RTX 4090 van Nvidia voor dat je praktisch gezien alle games op de hoogste kwaliteitsinstellingen kan spelen zonder problemen. De kracht van de hardware komt ook goed tot zijn recht dankzij het scherm van de Strix 18. Die laat de beste beelden in een 2K-resolutie zien met een verversingssnelheid van 240 beeldjes per seconde (240 hertz). Maar ook al zitten de beste componenten erin, de Strix 18 is en blijft een gaminglaptop, waardoor de klassieke problemen die daarbij komen kijken nog altijd voorkomen. Zo wordt de Strix 18 flink warm als je aan het gamen bent. Dat is goed te voelen aan je vingers én nog beter te horen met je oren, doordat de koeling flink gaat werken om de boel op een schappelijke temperatuur te houden.
