Podcast #1197: Is GPMI the beginning of the end of HDMI?

HDTV and Home Theater Podcast

On this week's show we look at a technology that could end HDMI. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Sony steps away from 8K TVs – for now Survey: Share of Homes With TV Antennas Falls to 19% DIRECTV unites streaming options under one name and price structure Peacock highlights cool features for mobile users Other: AUBESS Tuya WiFi 16A Mini Smart Switch Is GPMI the beginning of the end of HDMI?  Over 50 Chinese companies including Hisense and TCL have joined forces to back an HDMI alternative called GPMI (General Purpose Media Interface). This new wired communication standard is designed to integrate multiple functionalities into a single cable, aiming to rival HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt. The following are some key features: High Bandwidth for Data Transmission - GPMI Type-B: Supports up to 192 Gbps bandwidth, significantly surpassing HDMI 2.1 (48 Gbps), HDMI 2.2 (96 Gbps), DisplayPort 2.1 (80 Gbps), and Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps). GPMI Type-C: Offers up to 96 Gbps, compatible with USB-C ports, doubling the 40 Gbps limit of USB4 with Extended Power Range (EPR) under USB PD 3.1. Enables ultra-high-definition video - including 8K at 120Hz or higher, suitable for next-generation displays, gaming, and professional applications. Power Delivery GPMI Type-B: Delivers up to 480W of power, far exceeding Thunderbolt 4 (100W) and USB4 (240W with EPR). GPMI Type-C: Provides up to 240W, matching USB4 EPR capabilities. This eliminates the need for separate power cables -  simplifying setups for devices like TVs, monitors, and gaming laptops. All-in-One Cable Solution - Combines video, audio, data transfer, network connectivity, and power delivery into a single cable, reducing cable clutter. Supports bidirectional data transfer - allowing devices to send and receive data simultaneously. Compatibility and Connectivity - GPMI Type-C: Licensed by the USB Implementers Forum ensuring compatibility with existing USB-C ecosystems for smartphones, PCs, and TVs. GPMI Type-B: Uses a proprietary connector, which may face adoption challenges unless widely licensed. Backward-compatible with USB-C and DisplayPort standards - easing transitions without requiring immediate hardware replacements. Universal Control and Device Management - Supports a universal control standard similar to HDMI-CEC, allowing a single remote to control multiple GPMI-connected devices  Security Features - Integrates the ADCP (Advanced Digital Content Protection) protocol for secure content transmission. Supports daisy-chaining -  similar to DisplayPort, for connecting multiple devices in series. Limitations and Notes While GPMI supports 8K video, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 can handle higher resolutions (10K and 16K, respectively), though without power delivery. Adoption is currently limited to Chinese companies (e.g., Huawei, Hisense, TCL), and global traction depends on integration into mainstream devices and compatibility with non-Chinese brands like Sony, Intel, or NVIDIA. The proprietary Type-B connector may face adoption hurdles compared to the USB-C-based Type-C variant. Commercialization is planned for Q1 2025, with consumer products expected by early 2026. GPMI's combination of high bandwidth, power delivery, and multifunctionality positions it as a potential game-changer, particularly for 8K content and simplified connectivity, though its success hinges on widespread adoption and global market acceptance.

How much difference does X86_64_v4 make? How about AMD's new c cores? Then there's Pingora, the new nginx killer from Cloudflare; a bit of depressing news about native Linux games on Steam, and our favorite guilty pleasure GUI tool. I can report that the A8 is excellent for all of these on its clear and bright 10.5" LCD screen. Audio quality is very good on its four Dolby Atmos speakers. There's no booming bass but it's definitely loud enough when watching music and concert videos and there's a 3.5mm jack. Battery is pretty decent, 7040mAh. I could go a whole week with light use. 64GB I've filled already but there is an SD card slot. My gaming is mostly puzzles so I'm not pushing the graphics capabilities of its Unisoc Tiger T618 (12nm) Octa-core processor. Build quality has proved to be good so far. It's been in a folding case since day one. But even naked, its 508g 6.9 mm thick body feels very sturdy in the hand. The back does warm up a bit during a long video viewing session but no real problem. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and at under £170. I would highly recommend this tablet for everyday use. You're getting a whole lot of tablet for a budget price. Tech Addicts Review ------------------ Xerxes Hodivala on Samsung Store at Kings Cross It's a beautiful space with all their current products on display. I had to get my Fold 4 repaired under warranty. The S-Pen digitiser had failed on each side of the crease. They are going to replace the digitiser, inner screen, metal frame, hinge and both batteries as part of the service. It will basically be a new device when I get it back. The experience was first rate, as good as customer service at an Apple Store. This was actually the reason why I decided on a Samsung rather than a Pixel or OnePlus for my first folding device. I wanted something that I could take to a physical shop for repair if needed. But iPhone 15 Max, with its major camera upgrades, goes up from to $1,099 to $1,199.   LEWIS: Apple Watch Series 9 gets big power boost and new double tap gesture Apple Watch Series 9 brings a faster S9 chip that the company says will boost performance, make Siri more usable, and enable an entirely new “double tap” gesture.   Erfon: Apple Watch Ultra 2 is here with a brighter display, faster S9 SiP The front is dominated by a 1.92-inch LTPO OLED panel that now gets brighter than before. It can now reach a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, an increase of 1,000 nits from the first-gen Ultra.   LEWIS: Enter to win a carbon fiber case and band for Apple Watch [Cult of Mac giveaway] Erfon: iPhone 15 adds Dynamic Island and 48MP camera, dumps Lightning port Gets some features trickled down from last year's iPhone 14 Pro   GRIFFIN: Apple updates AirPods Pro 2 and EarPods with USB-C Small tweaks to the AirPods Pro 2 include USB C, an improved IP54 rating for improved dust resistance and lossless audio if you pair the earbuds to an Apple Vision Pro (which Apple confirmed is shipping early next year).   Lewis: iPhone 15's USB-C Port Can Charge Your Apple Watch and AirPods You'll need an appropriate cable to charge with an iPhone, such as a USB-C to USB-C cable for the new AirPods Pro 2 USB-C Charging Case, or a USB-C Apple Watch charging puck (which will probably come in the box with those products)   Erfon: All iPhone 15 Models Support DisplayPort for Up to 4K HDR Video Output The new iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max all support DisplayPort for up to 4K HDR video mirroring and video output to an external display or TV, according to Apple's tech specs for the devices.   Erfon: Apple's new FineWoven material for watch bands and iPhone cases makes leather obsolete To make its products more eco-friendly, Apple introduced a new material it calls “FineWoven” today. This material, which Apple says has a “suedelike” feel, will replace the company's existing leather accessories for the iPhone and Apple Watch.   Erfon: iCloud+ storage capacities expand to 12TB Previously, the storage options were 50GB, 200GB and 2TB. The monthly cost for these is $0.99, $2.99 and $10.99, respectively.   GRIFFIN: “Wonderlust” prediction results

It's not a particularly good one, actually it's pretty poor in the grand scale of Radios, but it's not absolute garbage, and it does work as it's designed to. The thing that makes it iconic is the price. Where a Radio Amateur might have paid £300-£1000 for an equivalent product from a reputable manufacturer (Icon, Yeasu, Kenwood etc), I paid around £7 for this one from China (or £26 in the UK)! Which is astonishing when you consider this includes the Radio, Antenna, a Removable Li-ion Battery, two headsets, case, cradle dock and a charger. The reason these are popular with a lot of folks is that they can be easily programmed to use the Licence Free PMR446 frequencies, (although technically it's not legal to do so) so they are popular with off-roaders, paintballers, security companies etc. It's a hell of alot of tech of £7 - and even works as a rechargeable torch! …therein followed a long thread in our MeWe Group as listeners compared their memories and various pieces of Ham Radio kit! ------------------ Harry Myhre (“My-ree”) Amazon's New Home Internet Service Is One Step Closer to Becoming a Reality “Amazon plans to introduce home Internet service.
