As a cinematographer himself, Holben used this extraordinary privilege to not only discuss the ins-and-outs of a particular movie being covered, but to "pick the brains" of the best cinematographers on the planet. This rather selfish approach to his journalism afforded Holben the chance to fill his creative toolbox with tips and techniques from the true masters of the art. These treasures of movie magic were printed in the pages of American Cinematographer over the past 27 years, but they have now all been collected into a single volume. Lessons From American Cinematographer brings the reader back to every interview and AC story highlighting those special tips and techniques that Holben learned. It's like opening a secret vault to a secret collection of tips and techniques handed down from the artisans of motion picture photography in your hands. A perfect companion to Holben's extremely popular Shot Craft series, Lessons From American Cinematographer provides the reader a lifetime of masterclasses in a single volume.Pickup a copy hereVimeo NYC Event:October 23rd @ Angelika Film CenterA night of inspiring Vimeo Staff Picks + live filmmaker commentary!Join Vimeo curators Meghan Oretsky and Ina Pira as they screen recent Staff Picked films with live, unscripted commentary from some of the best creators on Vimeo.Founded in 2008, Vimeo Staff Picks has emerged as one of the preeminent channels for online video and one of the most coveted awards for young filmmakers, having helped launch the careers of many celebrated directors. This is the show that delves into our most vivid dreams and nightmares, and how they affect our lives and work. Show hosts are Catherine Corcoran (Terrifier, Return to Nuke 'Em High), James A Janisse (Kill Count, Dead Meat Podcast) and Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, Suitable Flesh). Heather Langenkamp has some strong, surprising views on horror films that you won't want to miss. Heather reveals a nightmare about Freddy's tongue, and talks about how sexual content in horror scenes can affect the participants subconsciously. Catherine concurs about hyper sexualised roles and how you don't realise what you carry with you. Heather finds watching horror movies very hard, and speculates that some taboos in horror films can actually break the bonds that hold society together. She asks how James can process having to watch so many horror films. We find out why Heather can never take a relaxing bath, and how focusing on small things such as helps her block out the horrors of the real world. And we touch on Heather's upcoming movies, including Mike Flanagan's Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck. For this week's Side Barb, Barbara is conjured by a very special song, and we play a game where Heather has to escape a nightmare of the hosts' imagining. We really welcome your Feedback - please let us know what you think of the show so far in the comments, suggest any fun nightmare games we might play, as well as future guests you'd like to see on the show! Obviously you're going to want to avoid repeating ideas, so an open-world game set in the Wild West will not earn you any points. As we sat down with Sarah I, we found ourselves wrapped up in a tale of streaming platforms, actor's strikes, and the ever-transforming landscape of the entertainment industry. Sarah's insights on the complexities of harmonizing different time zones to record a podcast added a new sense of awareness to our conversation. With the unexpected cancellation of Michael A. Dengas's Midnight Club, our chat took a turn towards the gritty and mature content of Netflix shows, particularly Dengas's recent creation, The Fall of the House of Usher. Many of you can relate to the thrill of dissecting the intricacies of a TV series or movie, and this was no different as we delved into the dense symbolism and unique character dynamics of Mike Flangan's Netflix multiverse. Who knew the world of Netflix was so complicated, right? Sarah I's perspective on the ongoing actor's strike and its impact on the production also gave us much to ponder. With the SAG-AFTRA's recent counter-offer on the table, we analyzed the importance of ensuring fair deals for actors. Finally, we took a leisurely stroll through the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry, considering how popular films and TV shows have influenced this sector. The dominance of blockbuster films, the struggle of independent films for recognition, and the introduction of streaming services, we covered it all. We also touched upon the role nostalgia plays in today's cinematic storytelling. Get ready to be spooked out and talk about horror as Andrew and Presley join the ranks of The Midnight Club. All our Links: https://linktr.ee/seasononepodSeason Spoiler Synopsis: The Midnight Club is a Netflix original series that premiered in fall 2022. The series follows a group of eight young adults who have one thing in common: they are all terminally ill. The group lives in Brightcliffe Home hospice just outside of Seattle, which is run and owned by Dr. Georgia Stanton (played by Heather Langenkamp) who bought the house as a place to provide terminally ill teens with a place to live out the remainder of their lives on their own terms. The Midnight Club meets at midnight (shocker) in the library of the home, to tell each other scary stories. We see each of the club members give stories and bond throughout their time together at the club. The club has an agreement that whoever dies first has to communicate with the others beyond the grave. Ilonka (played by Iman Benson) enrolls in Brightcliffe Hospice hoping to find a cure for her thyroid cancer, after reading a story about a woman with the same ailment going there herself for hospice care, only to mysteriously vanish for about a year and emerge fully cured of her cancer. Throughout the series we see each of the clubbers deal with their imminent departure from the world in their own ways. As Ilonka spends time in the house, she has hallucinations of an old man and old woman periodically, also uncovering the secrets of a cult called the Paragon that previously occupied in the house. The Midnight Club performs a ritual discussed in a journal of Julia Jayne (played by Larsen Thompson) to help save Anya (Ruth Codd) from terminal bone cancer after her health takes a dive. The ritual is ultimately proven unsuccessful, and Ilonka is convinced by Shasta (a woman who lives in a commune close to Brightcliffe, played by Samantha Sloyan) to allow her into Brightcliffe to perform the ritual again, by revealing that she herself is Julia Jayne and that the ritual will work this time. Georgia finds Ilonka, Shasta, and Shasta's friends from the commune in the hidden basement of the home, and pleads with Ilonka not to drink the tea Shasta has given her as part of the ritual, just before multiple of the other women there start falling very ill after drinking it. Georgia and Shasta scuffle, resulting in Shasta getting away while Georgia and Ilonka provide medical aid to and call EMS for the other women. A member of the group leaves as they are found to have been misdiagnosed, and the group finish their stories at their final Midnight Club meeting of the show. The series leaves us with a cliffhanger showing Georgia take off a wig to reveal both that she is bald (and potentially dealing with a sickness herself) but also has a tattoo of the hourglass symbol which represents the Paragon on the back of her neck.

I've rarely been more excited about an episode – for you to hear it or, indeed, about its very contents. We're joined this week by Mike Flanagan. Yes, that Mike Flanagan. The genius loci of modern visual horror, the writer and director behind Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, The Midnight Club and Oculus. Our most literary horror director and a man who understand that horror is where the heart is. If you think my praise is too gushing then… we'll just have to disagree. He may be a filmmaker, but he sure does love books. In this conversation we talk about Mike's deep love for horror stories, how his childhood reading continues to influence his career, and what he's still loving about the genre. We discuss his upcoming take on Fall of the House of Usher, his next Stephen King adaptation, and a certain tower that looms in the distance.Yes, Mike's career – like all great things – follows the Beam. Larsen Thompson (The Midnight Club, Horrorscope) was an amazing fricken guest this week. She shared her early entry into acting after having to walk away from her passion of dancing for health concerns. Larsen opens up on the idea of her perfectionism and how she's learned to turn that off while acting, prioritizing performance over her own appearance and ego. We also talk about working with Mike Flanagan on The Midnight Club, her first role under Anthony LaPaglia, and how a retweet from Beyoncé helped catapult her career. PUBLIC VERSION. Actor Zach Gilford (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, SUPER, MIDNIGHT MASS, THE PURGE: ANARCHY) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey so far. From his first feature working with the great Larry Fessenden… to working on Peter Berg's FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS series where a simple direction to add basic human actions to a performance taught him how to raise the quality of a performance… to advice on what not to do when auditioning on tape… to the importance of getting out of your own way as an actor… to how picking up a camera himself for a few minutes early in his career helped him understand and trust the filmmaking process… to working with the great Carol Burnett… to working with Mike Flanagan on MIDNIGHT MASS and THE MIDNIGHT CLUB… to working with friend of the podcast Roxanne Benjamin on her new horror film THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CHILDREN (now available on digital and VOD, coming to MGM+ March 17th)… to why he loves Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton… Zach's super candid discussion about the acting process and all that his experiences have taught him is one that fans will love and aspiring actors will surely benefit from!
He's got a new horror movie now playing on Digital and VOD called What's Wrong with the Kids, but chances are you know Zach Gilford better for his work on television, from his memorable role in Friday Night Lights to the current season of Criminal Minds where he got to play opposite his real-life wife, Kiele Sanchez. He has a positive outlook and that is just one reason he's always working: recent series include L.A.'s Finest, The Midnight Club, Midnight Mass, Good Girls, and The Family. He's also co-hosting a podcast about Friday Night Lights with his pal Mae Whitman. Leonard and Jessie are admirers and feel certain he will continue to be a “working actor” for many years to come.
PUBLIC VERSION. Recorded LIVE at the very end THE MOVIE CRYPT's 7th annual YORKIETHON, actress Heather Langenkamp (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE MIDNIGHT CLUB) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss her legacy as the star of one of the most beloved and important genre films of all time. From the power of Wes Craven's simple yet groundbreaking “don't fall asleep” hook… to the timeless icon created with “Freddy Krueger”… to audiences creating their own interpretations and finding their own values in the franchise's many sequels… to how Heather truly feels about the industry term “final girl”… to the making of Heather's latest series THE MIDNIGHT CLUB (currently on Netflix)… to Heather's love of animals and the importance of animal rescue… this was the perfect conversation to end this year's week-long, 48-hours of live entertainment! It was our best show yet and we wound up raising just under $30,000.00 for our friends at Save A Yorkie Rescue! Need for Speed: Unbound deserved a better launch than this. After a decade of middling entries, EA has returned NFS responsibilities to the exceptional racing developer Criterion Games. The team has produced a street racing game that blends Forza Horizon with the thrills of the Midnight Club games. And it just looks cool! Frush also got Prodeus off his backlog. It's a solid retro FPS, ideal for playing on a portable like the Switch or the Steamdeck. Plus, we talk through the Besties 2022 bracket!

The Netflix series The Midnight Club is set in a mysterious seaside hospice where teens with terminal conditions spend their final days gathering in the library every midnight to tell each other scary stories. The result is both a straight ahead horror show and a stealth anthology series. The show was created by Leah Fong and Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass).

Princess and Tessa kick off #SpookySeason with Mike Flanagan's newest series, The Midnight Club. They gush over the return of actors from the Mike Flanagan cinematic universe, and debate whether or not a DVD could be as haunted as a VHS tape. (No way, VHS tapes are 100x more haunted. It's a horror rule)
