Quiet week in MLS, huh? As the transfer window in Europe closed, MLS teams got pulled into the drama. First, Miguel Almiron finally got his Newcastle move for a fee that Andrew, Bobby and Dave argues changes the league as we know it. Then Sebastian Giovinco picked up and moved to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Why did the deal make sense for Toronto? What is the Atomic Ant's legacy? Oh, and Lucho Acosta to PSG? Mind blown. Also in this show ... Digging into DP moves by the Whitecaps and Revs, evaluating the Ike Opara trade and talking USMNT in the mailbag. 3:35 - Miguel Almiron to Newcastle 11:08 - Giovinco and Toronto FC part ways 22:39 - Lucho Acosta ... to PSG? 31:30 - Who won the Ike Opara trade? 44:25 - Vancouver grab Asian Cup star as Young DP 49:55 - Carles Gil to NE as a DP 53:33 - Mailbag 1:04:01 - Looking ahead to US-Costa Rica
Greetings soccer fans from the soon-to-be coldest place on Earth: the Chicago suburbs. Post-apocalyptic and extreme freezing temperatures have shut down much of the Midwest, including our recording studio, but the Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast is still bringing you the latest in Major League Soccer (MLS) and United States Men's National Team (USMNT) news. This episode starts off with Nick recapping the USMNT friendly matchup against Panama, the first game under new head coach Gregg Berhalter. The US arrived with an all-MLS based squad and employed a rarely seen 4-3-3 formation. However, the attacking depth of the roster and the tactics employed by Berhalter necessitated such a formation. With a result of 3-0, who can argue!? Next our resident Toronto FC (and all things Canada) expert, Mike gives his take on the Giovinco trade rumors. Will he stay at TFC, and will it be a DP or TAM deal? Will the Atomic Ant end up in Asia? Be sure to listen to find out details. Finally, Nick discussed three big transfers and their impact on the league: 1. Almiron to Newcastle United Where does the MLS now stand in the world marketplace? 2. Opara to Minnesota United FC Did MNUFC overpay? And if so, who cares!? 3. Ousted to Chicago Fire An improvement over Sanchez, but what wouldn't have been? Thanks for listening! Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening, soccer fans! Welcome back to the Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast. It's cold and icy outside, but we've got our supporter scarves to keep us warm. Mike is obviously sporting the TFC tribute to the Sebastian Giovinco "The Atomic Ant" while Nick is paying tribute to the Fire's signing of Marcelo with his Sporting Portugal scarf. In the episode, the hosts break down Gregg Berhalter's first United States Men's National Team (USMNT) roster for upcoming friendlies against Panama and Costa Rica. The all MLS-based roster has a few surprises with Sean Johnson as the backup goalkeeper, Jeremy Ebobisse one of three strikers, and Daniel Lovitz as a potential starting defender. Nick and Mike get into a lively discussion on how much winning these games means to Berhalter and the American fan-base, as opposed to simply gaining experience and finding players who fit his style. Next, Mike dives in to breaking news out of Toronto. TSN Live reporter Kristian Jack reports that Toronto FC (TFC) have traded defender Nick Hagglund to FC Cincinnati and that TFC is parting ways with Gregory van der Wiel after an altercation with head coach Greg Vanney. As Mike states, van der Wiel has had issues in the past and things have gotten to the point where the two sides can no longer work together. Meanwhile, the trade of Hagglund gives TFC greater salary cap space while FCC gets a proven defender to help guide their expansion franchise. It looks like TFC has started their rebuild a year sooner than expected. Finally, the hosts give their impressions on the league's latest expansion franchise: Austin FC. Logo jokes aside, the hosts agree that more soccer is always welcome. However, the history of soccer in the city of Austin is spotty at best (see Austin Aztex x2). Can Major League Soccer (MLS) survive in Austin? Only time will tell. Thanks for listening, and be sure to spread the word! Let us know your thoughts on all things USMNT and MLS in the comments below.
Whoa. Just whoa. If you thought Week 33 and the Final Push to the Playoffs packed a punch, what will Decision Day be like? With the Armchair Analyst in New York City, the guys get in the same room for banter, breakdowns and some serious analysis of Sunday’s MLS doubleheader. Starting in the Western Conference, FC Dallas grabbed control of the Supporters’ Shield race … but may have lost Mauro Diaz for months and Kellyn Acosta for the playoff run. The magical unicorn’s apparent Achilles injury breaks Andrew’s heart, but perhaps Carlos Ruiz and his timeless goal magic can fuel an MLS Cup run in Big D. Seattle, meanwhile, wasted another opportunity to clinch a playoff spot, meaning there are three up for grabs among four teams with Portland and Kansas City controlling their own fates. Can Colorado pip Dallas to the Shield? It’d be a fitting bow on the Rapids’ best regular season ever. In the Eastern Conference, Drogba-gate dominates the headlines. Long story short, Didier Drogba decided coming off the bench wasn’t for him, so the Impact went out and nabbed a point sans superstar via a hard-fought draw with archrivals Toronto FC, led by Sebastian Giovinco (the Atomic Ant is back!) and Jozy Altidore. Elsewhere, the Red Bulls locked up the top seed, but gave their fanbase more late heart palpitations, Philly backed into the Knockout Round, D.C. United are playing the best soccer in MLS, and New York City FC are still the most schizophrenic team in North America. Don’t tune out before the mailbag, in which Doyle explains the origins of the Octagon, Michael Bradley’s TFC future gets a harder look, the guys explain the repercussions ofSunday’s Expansion Priority Draft, MLS affiliates book their places in USL Cup and Steve Jobs … no, Bob Bradley … nearly leads Swansea City to a massive road win in his first EPL match.
The gang is all here to review not one, but two matches, look ahead to Orlando and so much more. In this episode, Duncan is apparently bored with the Atomic Ant, Mark's favourite moment from a match was himself (sort of), Tony harkens back to crappy fireworks of days gone by and Kristin loves the […]
Week 33 has come and gone, and the guys dive into the action as the countdown to Decision Day begins. What happened at halftime in Carson? Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter joins to explain his team’s recent tactical switch and Darlington Nagbe’s US national team status. Plus, what does it say that three teams without big-money Designated Players are at the top of the standings? Didier Drogba is helping usher in a new era in Montreal. What makes him so special? Interim head coach and native Montrealer Mauro Biello calls in to detail the Ivorian’s impact on the club and shed light on his job and the club’s future. Plus, Giovinco or Piatti? Which goal was better? Andrew’s answer might surprise you, but David says there’s a trump card. In the mailbag, swag is flying as the guys applaud a bold preseason prediction, potential national team head coaches, Decision Day scheduling and a new nickname for the Atomic Ant.
It was the Giovinco show on Saturday as the Atomic Ant did it all, scored, set up countless chances for his teammates and was continuous a threat in the final third. A 1-0 win over Portland was not comprehensive and had shaky moments down the stretch, but a win is a win. BMO Field is still far from a fortress, but it was another step in some players linking up and creating - now it's a matter of finishing and TFC could start to become a threat week in week out.
