The Fire have played three games since our last show: an entertaining draw vs Messi and friends, a sloppy and crazy 3-2 loss to Cincinnati, and an humiliating blowout at the hands of Gregg Berhalter's former assistant B.J. Callaghan and Nashville SC. What's gone wrong, what's not working, and what can we conclude after 10 games? Then, the Chicago grassroots soccer community, Edgewater Castle FC President and General Manager Andrew Swanson joins the show to talk about the team's new podcast ‘Stone By Stone,' promotion and relegation and the state of the lower-division landscape. Kellyn Acosta was a key member of the US Men's National Team that qualified for and then played in the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup in Qatar. His journey to that tournament, and significance of his participation, is unique to the story of soccer in America. Acosta was born in Dallas, Texas and joined he FC Dallas youth system in 2009. He worked his way through the Development Academy, then onto the senior team in 2013. He emerged as a regular on the FC Dallas team and became recognized as a rising star in the US Soccer ecosystem. He finally broke through with the US Men's National Team in 2016, at a time of transition. The team was unsuccessful in its efforts to qualify for the World Cup; then a legendary group of veterans was transitioning out of the program and a young group introduced rapidly into the first team. Kellyn was part of that group and experienced the ebbs and flows of the transition before ultimately being a key contributor in the Qualifying cycle. He is the son of a Japanese father and an African American Mother. When he earned a roster spot for the 2022 World Cup, Kellyn became the first Asian American man to appear for the United States in a World Cup. He has played 11 seasons in the MLS and is an MLS Cup winner with LAFC. Kellyn currently is a member of Chicago Fire FC. He talks about his story on the show Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America.Visit our website for more information: FoundingFutbol.com. When the US Men's National Team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, it was a setback to the growth of soccer in America. The disappointment of that failed qualification triggered changes at the top of the team, and a concerted effort to integrate a new group of young talent that could get the team back to the FIFA Men's World Cup in 2022. Players like Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah, Antonee Robinson, Kellyn Acosta and others became fixtures of the starting XI through 2018 and into the 2019 Gold Cup in an effort to gain the experience needed to excel on the international stage. Aaron Long was in that group of players. He worked his way into the national team picture after becoming a stalwart defender under Jesse Marsch for the NY Red Bulls. Once he landed on the senior team roster, his impact was felt. Long became a starter and team captain. Then, after fighting through injuries, figured into the final stages of the World Cup Qualifiers before making the roster for the team's trip to Qatar. Long joined Founding Futbol to talk about his journey through MLS and onto the national team. He discusses how then coach Gregg Berhalter gave the team clear focus on a return to the world's biggest tournament, and what it was like learning to win with a young group of players. Long also reflects on the importance of the USMNT return to the World Cup, and how it helped continue to elevate the game in America. At this point, watching the Chicago Fire feels like some sort of punishment. After being obliterated by Messi-less Miami in front of 55,000 spectators and Jason Derulo, a change of venue didn't help as they lost to DC United in Bridgeview. Alex Campbell and Joe Chatz of OnTap Sports want to talk about those games as little as possible, so they take listener questions! Is there any hope for this team? Who deserves to be kept around? How long would a proper rebuild take? We try to provide some answers and optimism on the CHGO Fire Podcast.
Hey, soccer fans! It was a road point in the nation's capital for the beleaguered Men in Red. Yes, the Chicago Fire did just enough to earn a 1-1 draw against DC United and give themselves and their fans a sliver of hope. Defender Carlos Teran successfully held star striker Christian Benteke in check, while Andrew Gutman created opportunities for the visitors - including starting the play that led to Kellyn Acosta's equalizer. Can the Fire turn this into a point streak? They'll have a mid-week game against a similarly struggling Orlando City side and a weekend matchup with Western Conference power LA Galaxy to test their newfound confidence. In what should be a match between equally desperate teams, Chicago will have the home field advantage against The non-Messi, Florida squad. They will hope to take any momentum into their match vs. the stars of the Galaxy. It could be a big week for the Fire, so tune in and hear what Nick thinks will happen. Alan is joined by Tim, DJ, and special guest Caleb Pongratz (beat writer for @ProstSoccer) to discuss wind in Chicago, wind in New England, and which players the wind is taking away to their national teams this weekend. First, MLS will adjust roster rules this summer. Fire 2 begins play in the USOC this Wednesday. Kellyn Acosta, Hugo Cuypers, Brian Gutierrez, Maren Haile-Selassie get on the score sheet to silence Club de Foot Montreal in stunning comeback. Hey, soccer fans! What a victory from the Chicago Fire! The luck of the Irish was at Soldier Field this St. Patty's Day weekend as the Men in Red came from two goals down to shock their Canadian rivals. Goals from Maren Haile-Selassie, Brian Gutierrez, Hugo Cuypers, and Kellyn Acosta shocked the crowd and their opponents ... despite the poor play of the team for most of the game. Nick's takes on the game will surely sober up a few fans.In the second half, we look ahead to the Fire's match against New England. The Revolution - terrible tea boxes and all - have zero points on the season. The Fire could be walking into a trap game or walking into an opportunity to start a win-streak. S3E08 - For the Glory KC is back with the 73rd episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City got the 2024 season underway on Saturday night and it was more of a whimper than a bang, but it's early. While play was sloppy and the passes were often off target, it is only one game into the year and the team managed a draw despite not playing particularly well. Sheena returns to the podcast, and we break down the goals by both teams and a tactical wrinkle with Erik Thommy and Remi Walter. We also look at Peter's subbing patterns, the crappy Houston Dynamo fans booing Memo Rodriguez, a few player debuts and how the replacement refs did. Beyond the game, there was other news around Sporting KC this week. Peter Vermes gave an interview to the KC Star with some juicy information about four Designated Player targets that didn't work out, including Kellyn Acosta and four players to watch as breakout candidates this season. And SKC announced their roster designations including two surprise DPs (Salloi and Radoja) as well as green cards and some clues about new signing salaries. We even get a little behind the scenes from my trip to Swope Soccer Village to watch Sporting KC II play UMKC (they won 5-2). We also spend a little time with the KC Current and MLS at large. S3E06 - For the Glory KC is back with the 71st episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City didn't have any huge news in the week, but there were a lot of little stories building towards the start of 2024. First, the roster seems set with the news that Kellyn Acosta would not be signing with Sporting KC and Peter Vermes confirming it's "highly unlikely" a Designated Player is signed before Week 1. Sheena and I share how we're feeling about the roster. Then we weigh in on Khiry Shelton's now serious injury and surgery, Daniel Salloi's injury situation and how preseason is going for Sporting KC and if it leaves us feeling optimistic or pessimistic. Plus, we have to talk about the possible advent of Blue Cards in soccer around the world. Blue cards -- they aren't just for indoor soccer anymore! IFAB is considering 10-minute "sin bin" penalties for dissent and cynical fouls that would leave a team down a man. Also, two blue cards equal a red, or a blue and a yellow equal a red (which is confusing because those are all primary colors). The KC Current don't get much love this week because I couldn't get to media day on super short notice. That said, Kristen Hamilton dropped some promising quotes in the KC Star, and we talk about the outlook for 2024. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on the following topics: Benny Feilhaber's near departure SKC II's schedule is out Still no firm US Open Cup plans for MLS The USYNT U-17 girls are going to the U-17 World Cup! Plus: Diego Rubio, new SKC announcers, former players on the move and the USL Super League Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times): The Super Bowl and Chad's "Super Bowl" - 1:38 No Acosta or any other DP - 9:19 Shelton injured - 22:25 SKC Preseason Win and Salloi Update - 25:04 Blue Cards? - 33:10 KC Current - 41:04 (NEW SEGMENT) Errors and Corrections - 44:24 Digital Crawl - 46:25 Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on "Listener Support." S03E04 - For the Glory KC is back with the 69th episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City have a lot going on this week, considering real soccer is still nearly a month away. A topic to break Sheena's heart is if Kellyn Acosta, rumored to be joining KC, is being looked at to replace Remi Walter long-term. He primarily plays that same position and Remi is out of contract after the 2024 season. We take a look at the cost and fit of Acosta within Sporting KC. We also briefly discuss Memo Rodriguez being on trial, the 3-3 Sporting KC/Charlotte FC draw and all the Peter Vermes quotes that came out of the post-game presser. Plus, our takes on the leaked Sporting KC secondary kit, the other leaked MLS kits and Sheena does her first "bio" of 2024, covering Marinos Tzionis. Who else would you like to see a mini-bio on? The KC Current have a ton going on as well. We go over the schedule release, all the signings (Bia Zanaratto, Desiree Scott and Bayley Feist), the trialists and the departures (Cassie Miller, Mimmi Larsson). And I have a radical idea that the NWSL should adopt -- getting rid of trades. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on the following topics: Felipe Gutierrez retires Chance Myers is the Technical Director in Nashville PRO may be going on strike Hector Herrera is out for the SKC opener That bizarre Jesus Ferreira/FC Dallas/Russia saga Rylan Childers signs in Denmark And Inter Miami players are dropping like flies Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times): How do we feel about Kellyn Acosta on SKC? - 5:41 Memo Rodriguez on Trial with Sporting - 18:53 Preseason results and PV quotes - 22:28 Leaked MLS kit thoughts - 38:58 Sheena does a Marinos Tzionis Bio - 47:51 KC Current Schedule - 52:26 Lots of KC Current roster moves - 1:00:18 Digital Crawl - 1:11:23 Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on "Listener Support." Barely more than a week after a fairly uncomfortable press conference was convened to announce Gavin Wilkinson's hiring as Sporting KC's new Sporting Director, Principal Owner Michael Illig released a written statement on the SKC website stating that they have mutually parted ways. This was in response to consistent pressure from fans, business partners and key stakeholders. While it was good to see club leadership relent and fix an obvious hiring mistake, some questions remain on how we even got here in the first place. Kellyn Acosta has been one of the bigger names in MLS Free Agency this season and he is yet to sign with a team. Reporting via Tom Bogert with The Athletic has him linked with SKC as a possible destination along with the Chicago Fire and Colorado Rapids. We discuss his potential fit in KC and what the impacts could potentially be for bringing him aboard. MLS Referees are embroiled in a labor dispute with PRO Referees, the MLS funded organization that employs them. A work stoppage would undoubtedly be a bad look for a league making a lot of strides in global relevance and candidly, the league refs make peanuts compared to the vast majority of the players they are meant to adjudicate. Finally a round robin of topics including the end of Camp Cupcake and what can be taken from the friendly match that concluded it, along with some more head scratching decision making by the Current in how they manage movement of players on and off their roster. Get as excited as the new guys as we talk Zack Steffen's knee, Djordje Mihailović humor, Chris Armas going off on the Open Cup, and more. We have reason to believe Sam Vines will immanently be announced as rejoining the Rapids. The boys discuss what went wrong at Royal Antwerp, what him and other players coming to the club having failed(?) in Europe mean, and whether Armas will bring the Vines back back to Commerce City. The guys then discuss the preseason schedule as the Rapids return to Querétaro and Orlando. They've replaced four pitches at DSGP. There's concerns about how much information we'll get while the team's out of town. Lastly, we take listener questions. We discuss contract info, No. 6 prospects (Kellyn Acosta anyone?), season expectations, and center forward depth. Also, we officially had a listener in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. During the show, we bring up Mark Goodman's and John Babiak's articles on Joan.

Episode 255 may be the toughest one yet here on Defenders of the Banc. No match was more important in our club's history than this second leg of the 2023 CCL Final against Leon. We had them at home, at BMO, at a place we've staunchly defended for 6 years. We needed just one goal to level things and take control of the series. And we had Denis Bouanga, Carlos Vela, a healthy Kellyn Acosta, an un-suspended Jesus Murillo, and... wait... is that Giorgio Chiellini?! It is!However, despite the talent, the desire, and maybe the best support The 3252 have ever provided, we didn't have the goals. LAFC failed to find the back of the net in leg 2, falling 1-0 and 3-1 on aggregate. Club Leon is the 2023 CCL Champions. On this episode, we try to help you navigate through the hurt and the grief. We ask questions of Steve and Cifu, throw praise at McCarthy and Denis, and wonder what could have been. Walk with us on the journey that is Episode 255, and know that the next one is just around the corner!

It's Episode 244, and it's the first half of the rematch everyone has been waiting for: Leg 1 of the Semifinals of the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League tilt between LAFC and the Philadelphia Union. Thanks to a pair of superb saves by John McCarthy, LAFC and Philly left the first half level. A Kellyn Acosta handball gifted a PK to the Union with just 4 minutes left in regulation, and Daniel Gazdag hammered it home to give the hosts a late lead. However, Kellyn would go from goat to hero, getting on the end of a Timothy Tillman cross even as the ball dipped behind him. Despite a touch from Andre Blake, the visitors leveled the match and broke the hearts of the Philly fans. LAFC heads home to BMO with all kinds of options available to them as they look to advance to the CCL Finals for the second time. Also on this episode, Filly offends the good people of Pigs Knuckle, Arkansas, rendering Scarf utterly speechless. Enjoy Episode 244!
