It was bound to happen sometime. LAFC suffers its first loss of the 2023 MLS campaign, falling to San Jose at Levi's Stadium, 2-1, behind a brace from Cristian Espinoza. Hear all about it on Episode 247.With Filly (and Panda) in the stands, LAFC traveled up to Santa Clara, CA to the home of Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers to face the San Jose Earthquakes. LAFC was behind the eight-ball early, as an 8' goal from Espinoza gave the home crowd something to froth over. LAFC would respond behind, who else, Denis Bouanga, who pounced on a rebound to slot his 8th of the year past the San Jose keeper. In what was a relatively tame effort from San Jose, a moment was all they needed, and they found it in the 81'. Denil Maldonado committed a clear foul on a streaking Jeremy Ebobisse in the box, gifting a PK to Espinoza and the lead to San Jose. LAFC couldn't find an equalizer, and just like that, the unbeaten run to start the year was over. LAFC falls, 2-1. Also on this episode, Filly is staying in the Cabin in the Woods, Scarf bemoans the coverage on Apple TV, and a player on San Jose does his best Christian Ramirez impression. Enjoy Episode 247!

Episode 210 is upon us, and before we talk about the match against the Quakes, we have an announcement! Defenders of the Banc is proud to announce the podcast's first official sponsor: FLEX Power Tools. Yes, FLEX, the very same front-of-kit sponsor of our beloved Black and Gold! A huge thank you to everyone in the FLEX family: Joe, Katie, Brady, Vince, Taylor, Shane, and everyone involved in making this dream a reality.Meanwhile in San Jose, the Black and Gold take an… interesting lineup into PayPal Park to take on the Quakes. While Max and the back line were relatively normal, the midfield trio of Mendez-Acosta-Blessing and seeing Ryan Hollingshead's name next to Chicho and Mahala on the front line left both Filly and Scarf saying “Wait… what?!” (It's back!)LAFC would go down early on a Benji Kikanovic goal, set up by the theme for the match, an attack from the right by San Jose. After a couple of near misses by Jeremy Ebobisse and Chicho Arango, we head to half down, but not out, 1-0. Surprisingly, no halftime changes were made, but that wouldn't stop LAFC from leveling the match. After some much-needed heroics by Crepeau, it was time for more Mahala magic! A cheeky chip of Marcinkowski in the 54' was all LAFC needed to grab a point back on the road. Or at least we thought. After subbing in Carlos Vela, Jose Cifuentes, Ilie Sanchez, and Gareth Bale, the momentum immediately swung our way, but double yellows on Ilie and Kellyn, coupled with the wunderkind, Cade Cowell, entering the match, spelled trouble for the Black and Gold. In the 77', Cade Cowell fired a one-timer with authority to put the home side on top for good and send PayPal Park into a frenzy. San Jose had just won their MLS Cup. Ilie Sanchez all but sealed the victory for SJ, picking up his second yellow in just 15 minutes, assuring he will miss the match in Austin, but a game LAFC squad wouldn't relent. The front line of Bale, Chicho, and Vela were clicking as LAFC had a few chances to pull one back, but it was too little, too late, and just like that, the win streak was over. This episode definitely meanders through the first few bits! Will Cifu, Mamadou Fall, and/or Brian Rodriguez be on their way out? Are more players coming in? Why is Filly calling out Tony Robbins (again)? Did we really just talk about the return of Shaft Brewer, Jr. to American soccer? And did the boys really get to bring back “Name That Perez”?! What an episode!
Cucho, Jeremy Ebobisse and the San Jose Earthquakes, and so much more! David Gass and Susannah Collins go through their Week 20 winners after a fun Wednesday night of MLS action.
David joins forces with Calen Carr & Michael Lahoud to talk about everyones favorite thing GOALS! Columbus has broken the bank on a new DP striker is that enough for an MLS Cup run? Are Cade Cowell or Talles Magno the next big MLS Product? Then Jeremy Ebobisse stops by to talk about his work with The BPC, what has led to his place on top of the Golden Boot race, fighting for a spot at The World Cup, and much more. 3:18 Josef Martinez getting Atlanta looking like themselves) 10:13 Mario Gotze linked to Inter Miami 13:25 Cincinnati gets big result vs. Philly 18:00 Any worry for the Union? 22:30 Vancouver surging up the table 28:00 Columbus Crew signs DP Cucho Hernandez 41:00 A move to Europe for Cade Cowell? 51:29 Matt Turner gets improbable send off 1:02 Seattle vs. LAFC - Western Conference Preview? 1:09 Real Salt Lake and Austin trending up, Montreal trending down Jeremy Ebobisse End Red Bulls and NYCFC meet in USOC
The San Jose Earthquakes suffered a tough 3-2 loss to LAFC, but Jeremy Ebobisse cannot stop scoring! Jebo's brace puts him at nine goals for the season, the second-highest total of his career. Monterey Bay F.C. kept its hot streak alive by trouncing the Colorado Springs Switchbacks 4-2 at Cardinale Stadium. Chase Boone scored an absolute golazo while Adrian Rebollar continues to impress in his rookie campaign. Next up is a re-match with Oakland Roots on Saturday.
It would be one thing to play 8 matches in 28 days. That, in itself, is tough. But LAFC made it much, much tougher. Injuries. Yellow card suspensions. New signings and rumors of more on the way. Good form and bad form mixed almost equally. And one soul-crushing loss. Put it all together, and what a year these last 28 days have been. LAFC closes out the run with a match against a familiar and beatable foe, the San Jose Earthquakes.Like the entire month, LAFC couldn't make it easy. But they did at least get off to a hot start! An 8th minute PK from Chicho (earned by Ryan Hollingshead) and a beautiful assist by Brian Rodriguez for a second goal (scored by Ryan Hollingshead) had LAFC off and running just 13 minutes in. However, “thorn” in LAFC's side, Jeremy Ebobisse, made it all about him for the remainder of the half. Several near misses spaced between goals in the 16th and 31st minute saw both clubs heading to the locker room knotted at two after one half of play. Thankfully, LAFC has one healthy DP, and today, he played like it. Brian Rodriguez nets his second of the season just two minutes into the second half, and a much-improved defensive effort salts away the 3-2 win for LAFC. 3 goals. 3 points. 3 weeks without a match for the Black and Gold, as MLS takes their international break. LAFC heads into the break at the top of the table, best in the West and best in MLS. Also on this episode, we are joined in studio by @lafcluke, Luke Klipp of Pride Republic. We get to know Luke as he talks all things Pride, including some great ways to celebrate Pride Month (June) with all your LAFC friends. He even helps us break down the match! We hope you enjoy episode 197, and we are really looking forward to the next verses of Brian's Song, coming in Episode 198!

Play by Players is back this week as Bobby is joined by Black Players for Change (BPC) Executive Board Member Jeremy Ebobisse.
It’s Episode 125, and we are doing something we don’t normally do here on Defenders of the Banc: We are celebrating a tie! It’s been a long and tumultuous road both on and off the pitch in 2020, so when little victories come, we need to take time to celebrate them. Tonight’s match against Portland certainly gave us another moment to celebrate, and we recap the entire 102-minute match in Portland here on 125. LAFC got off to an inauspicious start, with an early yellow on Jordan Harvey opening the bookings in just the 5th minute. The Black and Gold had a few chances in the opening half but, for the most part, Portland controlled the pace and flow of the first 45 minutes. San Pablo looked very good, making several saves and keeping it scoreless going into the locker room. Jeremy Ebobisse, fast becoming a Rose City thorn in the side of LAFC, found the back of the net against us yet again, as Pablo seemed to be at least a little off of his line after a bad turnover by Adrien Perez. With LAFC down at about the hour mark, Mahala checked in and immediately provided some life and energy to the lineup. The Academy kids check in along with Dejan Jakovic for the final push, and LAFC played their best 20 minutes of the match with the young guys leading the way. Three minutes into stoppage, more LAFC history was made as midfielder, yes, midfielder Eddie Segura found Mahala who slotted a soft touch pass to 16-year old wunderkind Christian Torres for his first MLS goal and the game’s equalizer. LAFC walks out of Portland with a point. Also on this episode, Carlos Vela has a girl! Congratulations to Carlos, Saioa, and Romeo on welcoming their new daughter, India, into the world. LAFC gets their four stars back from international duty as Bob Bradley coaches his 100th match for LAFC across all competitions. It’s a rare full week off for LAFC, and Filly and the Scarf intend to take full advantage. It’s time to rest up, run that 5K for Athletes In the Making, and detox just in time for the LA Derby as Carson makes the trip into Los Angeles to take an L at the Banc.
Bang! First goal for Gonzalo Higuain, three points for Inter Miami. Andrew, David and Charlie try to predict what’s to come for the former Juve man, then name their biggest signings of 2020 (so far). Plus, the guys examine Jordan Morris’ case for MLS MVP, ask what exactly NYCFC are going for after Alexandru Mitrita is loaned to Saudi Arabia, give Jeremy Ebobisse some USMNT love, name the worst team in MLS and hand out some midweek shout outs to Ayo Akinola, Winston Reid and the Union. Stick around for an interview with Kelvin Jones (Crew academy director) and Continental Award submissions in the mailbag. 4:57 – Gonzalo Higuain gets his first, many more to come 8:46 – Best signings of the offseason (so far) 18:08 – Is Jordan Morris the real MLS MVP? 24:31 – Soooooo what are NYCFC doing? 34:10 – Should managers get 2020 mulligans? 38:01 – Who is the worst team in MLS? 40:04 – Charlie Davies is a big fan of Ayo Akinola 49:46 – INTERVIEW: Kelvin Jones (Crew academy director) on developing players, coaches 1:05:12 – MAILBAG: Continental Awards, D-Mid snubs and Reyna trolls
Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In their 48th episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat about the upcoming Vancouver Whitecaps clash with the Portland Timbers. First, they look at what to expect from the Timbers, who have been a streaky team as of late, rising to 2nd in the Western Conference thanks to a nice run of form that's seen them win their last 2 games. From the threat of Yimmy Chara on the wing, to the emergence of Jeremy Ebobisse, as well as the 'Double Diego' threat of Diego Valeri and Diego Chara in midfield, Alex and Sam look at who the 'Caps need to be wary of on the offensive side of things, especially after a heavy loss to LAFC's talented cast of attackers in the midweek. After that, they look at Portland's weakness, which appears to be their defence, which has only been masked by some excellent goalkeeping from Steve Clark, who continues to be one of the best goalkeepers in all of Major League Soccer this season with his play behind a porous Timbers defensive line. Once done with the Timbers chatter, the talk then shifts to the Whitecaps, as they look at what the 'Caps need to work on ahead of this one, as well as how playing at 'home' in Portland will affect them. They also try and take a stab at predicting both the Whitecaps lineup and the matches final score, with the predictions understandably a bit sour after getting them so horribly wrong ahead of the LAFC game. If you have Twitter, make sure to check out The Third Sub Podcast @thirdsubpod!
This is not your distraction. It’s not your escape from real life. For some, this is everyday life. These words adorned the shirts worn on July 8 by nearly 200 black Major League Soccer players, coaches, and staff who gathered for a showing of unity during a summer of historic racial tension in the United States. In the debut episode of The Movement Podcast, host and former MLS player Calen Carr examines how the Black soccer community in MLS embraced the Black Lives Matter movement and formed the Black Players for Change organization. Founded by a collection of prominent players with their own sobering stories of life as Black men in America, the BPC orchestrated a series of demonstrations in July as well as a boycott of nearly all MLS games on one historic night in August, all to raise awareness of racial injustice and police brutality. Carr offers a candid look at life for these Black players across the North American soccer spectrum via months of interviews with MLS players Warren Creaville, Raymon Gaddis, Jeremy Ebobisse and Ike Opara, as well as passionate supporters eager to join the fight for justice. From the Minneapolis corner where George Floyd died, to a protest in Atlanta following the death of Ahmaud Arbery, to the night when MLS play suddenly stopped after the police shooting of Jacob Blake, players and fans share their experiences from an unprecedented and transformative moment for soccer and social change. 0:00 - Formation of the Black Players for Change organization 8:45 - Warren Creavalle recounts one agonizing night in Houston 14:20 - Ike Opara on life in Minnesota after George Floyd’s death 18:05 - Jeremy Ebobisee on systemic racism and the relationship between the black community and the police 25:42 - Atlanta United Supporters refocus their resources on social justice 35:12 - Ray Gaddis reflects on the death of Breonna Taylor and his personal story of protests and pandemic 45:33 – Reggie Cannon and Ryan Hollingshead discuss a fateful night in Frisco and a historic night when sports stopped across the country

Hey, soccer fans, and welcome to The Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast. We break tonight's show down into quarters as if we're back in AYSO. Be sure to stay tuned for all this coverage and more: First Quarter We preview and predict the MLSisBack Final between Portland and Orlando City. Nick believes Portland will raise the trophy, but also describes a few scenarios where Orlando City comes out victorious (Sebastian Blanco red card, anyone?). Portland has the history and experience, but Orlando City as Nani and the desire to win "at home" and bring back their first ever Major League Soccer trophy - and a Concacaf Champions League berth. Second Quarter During the MLSisBack Tournament, Jeremy Ebobisse has cemented himself as the Timbers' starting striker. Has he done enough to earn a spot on the United States Men's National Team? Nick believes he's earned a call up to training camp, at the very least. We break down the current USMNT striker pool and where we think Ebobisse fits in. Third Quarter Hassani Dotson of Minnesota United has also played himself into the USMNT conversation. We don't think his outlook is quite as bright as Ebobisse's, however. The lack of top flight experience and a deep United States defender pool are prohibitive. But why not bring him into camp and see what he can do! Fourth Quarter We break down lots of headlines around the Major League Soccer, including: Gotze to MLS? Inter Miami sign French international Blaise Matuidi from Juventus Minnesota United sign Bakaye Dibassy Christian Pulisic picks up another injury New formats for MLS and CCL Thanks for listening, and enjoy all the MLS and American soccer action! However, the 23-year-old refuses to be defined as merely a footballer. He's outspoken and unapologetic in his approach as he grapples with issues surrounding race, immigration, education, and criminal justice. Recent protests, collective action, and the extensive reach of social media platforms has allowed "Ebo" and other athletes the opportunity to incite social change. We discuss how he sees his own role in all this, how he arrived there, strategy going forward, and much more...

Andrew, David, Doyle and Calen sit down to analyze every nook and cranny of MLS Week 9. First up, the winners! Omar Browne and the Montreal Impact, who sit tied atop the East. Boniek Garcia and the Houston Dynamo, the quiet powers out West. Oh, and anyone who watched Sporting KC and New England go full-on Concacaf. The Week 9 loser? Gotta be the Rapids, by virtue of Colorado being the final team in the league without a win. Also in this show … Zlatan talks trash, scores the game winner and tried to go to the Real Salt Lake locker room to apologize. Nedum Onuoha wasn’t having that. The guys put Pity Martinez’s body language and Atlanta performance under the microscope. Minnesota United gets to belt out Wonderwall thanks to another shut out. Seattle and Cristian Roldan have red card beef and a courageous point. Jeremy Ebobisse gets another goal, but should he keep his place in Portland? 3:29 – Omar Browne and the Impact are Week 9’s big winner! 7:25 – **mind blown** Sporting KC and the Revs defied logic in 4-4 draw 17:04 – Calen’s first-ever #Baerantee is Dynamo related… 23:05 – Rapids haven’t won, so they’re the logical Week 9 losers 32:22 – Analyzing Pity Martinez’s body language and Atlanta’s first home win 36:21 – Wonderwall! Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening, soccer fans! Welcome back to the Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast. It's cold and icy outside, but we've got our supporter scarves to keep us warm. Mike is obviously sporting the TFC tribute to the Sebastian Giovinco "The Atomic Ant" while Nick is paying tribute to the Fire's signing of Marcelo with his Sporting Portugal scarf. In the episode, the hosts break down Gregg Berhalter's first United States Men's National Team (USMNT) roster for upcoming friendlies against Panama and Costa Rica. The all MLS-based roster has a few surprises with Sean Johnson as the backup goalkeeper, Jeremy Ebobisse one of three strikers, and Daniel Lovitz as a potential starting defender. Nick and Mike get into a lively discussion on how much winning these games means to Berhalter and the American fan-base, as opposed to simply gaining experience and finding players who fit his style. Next, Mike dives in to breaking news out of Toronto. TSN Live reporter Kristian Jack reports that Toronto FC (TFC) have traded defender Nick Hagglund to FC Cincinnati and that TFC is parting ways with Gregory van der Wiel after an altercation with head coach Greg Vanney. As Mike states, van der Wiel has had issues in the past and things have gotten to the point where the two sides can no longer work together. Meanwhile, the trade of Hagglund gives TFC greater salary cap space while FCC gets a proven defender to help guide their expansion franchise. It looks like TFC has started their rebuild a year sooner than expected. Finally, the hosts give their impressions on the league's latest expansion franchise: Austin FC. Logo jokes aside, the hosts agree that more soccer is always welcome. However, the history of soccer in the city of Austin is spotty at best (see Austin Aztex x2). Can Major League Soccer (MLS) survive in Austin? Only time will tell. Thanks for listening, and be sure to spread the word! Let us know your thoughts on all things USMNT and MLS in the comments below.
