On today's 15-minute briefing: Pochettino's Magic: The battle of the jocks saw the USA come out on top against Australia. Mauricio Pochettino simply continues to work his magic, and the hosts are looking seriously impressive. Scottish Heartbreak: A really difficult one to swallow for the Scots against Morocco. Looking back at the crucial moments, I have to ask: should they have had at least one penalty in that game? Brazil Bounce Back: A good result for Brazil against Haiti, showing they can absolutely put the so-called lesser nations to the sword. But do they actually have enough quality for the real monsters of the tournament? I am not entirely convinced yet. Turkey Tumble & Almiron's Red: Miguel Almirón was sent off for covering his mouth against Paraguay—honestly, this is the sort of no-nonsense officiating I can get behind and something the authorities should have been doing for a while. As for the game itself, the result caps off a very disappointing World Cup for Turkey, whom many were expecting so much more from. Dutch Delight: A huge result in what many expected to be an evenly contested fixture between the Netherlands and Sweden. The Dutch played some scintillating football at times, which makes me wonder: perhaps they have been written off too soon? Heartbreak for Côte d'Ivoire: Absolute heartbreak for Côte d'Ivoire, who were genuinely brilliant against Germany. There is a lot of talk around Diomande at the moment, and he is definitely good value for it—a great player. But Deniz Undav was the hero for Germany, showing great composure to secure the winner. Wasteful Ecuador: Eloy Room continued the tournament's theme of standout goalkeeping performances for Curaçao, but you have to say Ecuador were incredibly wasteful in front of goal. Japan Show Up: Japan are showing more signs of being the team everyone said they were ahead of this tournament, putting in a great attacking performance to ruthlessly punish Tunisia. Tournament Update: Qualified Teams: Mexico, USA, and Germany. Eliminated Teams: Haiti, Tunisia, and Turkey. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It's time for The Truth!Dougie, by his own admission, has never been particularly interested in MLS - the top flight of American soccer. In this episode, Sam and Jack do their best to persuade him why this is a great time to start watching the league, by extolling the virtues of one of the most exciting leagues on the planet, which comes with its own quirks and surprises. We start at the beginning, with the basics of how things work and why MLS is different to the European leagues from an infrastructure perspective, before delving into some of the big storylines coming up in this, the league's 30th season. We look into some of the teams who might well be contending, as well as the players to keep an eye on; as well as exploring the changing face of MLS down the decades and why it struggles sometimes to shake off old reputations. From a retirement league to a hotbed for young talent, the world's most topsy-turvy affair to a distant din with some household names. everyone has an opinion on what the league represents. But what's the bottom line? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Eowyn took most of the headlines this week but our very own Swedish hurricane was southbound. Alexander Isak showed his full range of abilities as he turned Southampton's defence upside down and inside out.Jacob Murphy is the provider-in-chief and he will become a very important player if Miguel Almiron departs in January; the Paraguayan has proved to be a popular character, a tireless grafter and, for a brief, beautiful spell in 2022/23, a scorer of some incredible goals.Shania Hayles is having a great season in front of goal right now. The Lasses (TM) beat Portsmouth, but it wasn't without nervous moments and George certainly needed a stiff drink. Welcome in for another cup of Morning Espresso here on the SDH Network. Miguel Almiron and Emmanuel Latte Lath updates, there aren't any updates but there's also no need to panic on either move from the Atlanta United perspective. Almiron is expected to be part of Newcastle's side as they travel to Southampton for Saturday's match. The USMNT finished January camp with another win, last night defeating Costa Rica 3-0. Diego Luna starred after breaking his nose, Mauricio Pochettino sounded especially impressed with him on the TNT postgame show... you can find the quote or listen to the audio/video portion of the Espresso for it. Manchester City are in danger of missing out on the Champions League knockout stages after a loss to PSG yesterday, blowing a 2-0 lead. They've also got a complaint filed against them now for potentially tampering with Valladolid's Juma Bah and his contract situation. Stay tuned...Clubs in Norway's top two divisions have voted to get rid of VAR, this feels so misguided and the focus should be on training and development of the video assistant referees rather than scrapping a system that gets more calls right. Silly season updates and more in this edition of the Morning Espresso!

George Caulkin was absent on Monday, but rumours of his departure from Pod on the Tyne are WAY wide of the mark... or are they?! After all, football is a lie and you never know who to believe, especially in January.Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson were both strongly linked with moves away from Newcastle in the last few days and, as we recorded, there was another story, this time connecting Miguel Almiron with a move to Saudi Arabia. It's January 4th. Happy New Year dear listener. We have now passed the halfway stage in the season's Premier League.. Welcome to the latest edition of our show. I'm Paul and I am joined by Haitham and Daz. We'll talk about the Newcastle game and we'll look ahead to Arsenal in the FA Cup and Fulham in the League Cup. Part One - Newcastle 4-2 (xG 6.9 v 0.6 Statsbomb): Best performance of the season from the Reds so far, in less than ideal conditions. Reds were a threat all the way through - in the first half alone chances in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 11th 17th (offside), 23rd, 25th (2) and 35th minutes. Dropped off after a series of decisions went against them and they quite rightly appeared to be furious with Taylor. Missed penalty at 19 could have derailed them. Came out with real attitude in the second half. 48 - first goal - great from Diaz and Nunez to set up Mo. 150th league goal for Liverpool. Followed by Dubravka saves from Nunez at 50 and 52. 53 - really should have done better with Gordon and Isak. 56 - VVD foul on Almiron. Worst we've seen from him this year? Diaz, Nunez, Salah. Best from Diaz in a while, Darwin? Salah's 2nd half was great 64 - Jota, Gravenberch and Gakpo. That feels unfair. By 68 Liverpool are relentless again 73 - Jones goal from Salah and Jota. Passed it round him twice. 77 - Lesson for Darwin, don't hit it so cleanly! Mo's pass! 80 - No one blocked Botman from the corner (looks like an enforcer from a crime movie) 84 - Mac Allister pass to Jota; Jota never reestablishes his balance. Salah 151 - 94 - Nearly scored again through Jota and Salah. Curtis Jones, Joe Gomez - could probably name the whole team Newcastle: Showed some threat on the break - 30, 36 (narrow offside) Went full Athletico at the end with some of the challenges Dubravka - 11 saves What happened to the rule on the technical area? The disingenuous Mr. Howe… the xG was made up of penalties. And claiming Longstaff was fouled at 72 (deflect, deflect, deflect) Officiating: I counted at least 10 situations where Anthony Taylor gave them the benefit of the doubt - I thought he helped them throughout the game to avoid even more pressure. Soft fouls, non-calls (Diaz shoved in the back, and he ends up with the yellow card). Joelinton - how many fouls for 1 card in the 66th minute? Part Two - Wider narrative and other news: Reds are ‘flawed'. Losing Mo could be the end. 18 games left - Arsenal, Villa and United away City will go on a run Anyone else? Part Three - Arsenal and Fulham: Hard not to see them as linked and the latter more important right now Formation - solutions to the gaps? And predictions We will be back after the first leg against Fulham. Thanks to Haitham and Daz. And thank you dear listener for joining us. If you enjoyed the pod, please share it with a friend. Dave Jones presents Super Sunday alongside Jamie Redknapp and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who watched Newcastle beat Wolves 2-1 at St. James' Park to boost their hopes of a top-four finish after substitute Miguel Almiron scored the winner late on. There was a controversial moment early in the first half when Newcastle's Nick Pope avoided giving away a penalty which would have also seen him receive a red card. Hasselbaink said the goalkeeper was ‘extremely lucky' to get away with the decision and did not understand why VAR did not intervene. There is also reaction from Newcastle captain Kieran Trippier and man of the match Alexander Isak. Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui also gives his post-match thoughts as well as Eddie Howe who hopes the win re-ignites their push for a European place at the end of the season. The trio also review the rest of the weekend's results including Bournemouth's surprise win against Liverpool, Manchester City's narrow victory away to Crystal Palace and Arsenal's comprehensive 3-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage. Jamie Redknapp feels Arsenal deserve so much credit for maintaining their title push and said that if the Gunners do win the league, it will go down as one of the best Premier League achievements.
