John Obi Mikel and Salomon Kalou have had a brotherly bond since their days together at Chelsea. And that unique friendship is on display here as the two men reunite for a candid and, at times, hilarious jaunt down memory lane. Here, Kalou recounts the lengths José Mourinho went to scout him in person at Feyenoord, his first meeting with Roman Abramovich at a place where ‘everyone signed on the dotted line' and why he wasn't so keen on Didier Drogba's expensive Ferrari! Mikel can't resist teasing his friend over one of the more unique hairstyles we've seen in the Premier League, and why he always had to have a stocked fridge! Kalou also finally reveals what really happened between himself and Michael Ballack that led to their infamous training ground dust-up. Settle in for this one, as two Chelsea greats chew the fat about the glory days on the pitch, and the mad times off it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The Obi One Podcast is on the road again, this time in Abidjan for a live event with special guest Wilfried Bony. A cult hero at Swansea, a League Cup winner with Manchester City and an African champion with his beloved Ivory Coast, Bony looks back on his career and some of the sliding door moments within it. he came close to a move to Arsenal after a clandestine meeting with then boss Arsene Wenger, why he spurned the riches on offer in China and the rollercoaster of emotions that he went through in winning the African Cup of Nations in 2015. Bony also discusses the dressing dynamics of that Ivory Coast team which featured both Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré. Who was the top dog? Learn more about your ad choices. This week, we're delighted to welcome Ryan Bertrand to the show, the only man to make his Champions League debut in the final…and of course win it in historic style with Chelsea in 2012. The regulars of you will know a conversation like this is exciting for us both as big Chelsea fans, and the shirts we wore throughout gave the game away anyway. But Ryan isn't just the player who won that cup, played over 260 Premier League games, and was capped 19 times by England. This is a former athlete with a story to tell that incorporates exploration away from football; interests that fans, the media, even those within the game don't associate with players. You can do business, learn business, all while playing at the highest level. You can also leverage the power of your network and your unique experiences to add something few others can to businesses outside of the game. This is something we encourage athletes, the ones who are interested off their own back and the ones who may not have understood the possibilities, to do in a world where opportunity can come from multiple sources. Ryan has built businesses, managed people, and carved out a path that now positions him to succeed at scale. What can you learn from him? It's the balance of the stories we of course are desperate to hear paired with his transition from player to multi-faceted operator. On today's show we discuss: Football Culture, Clubs & Career Decisions What Ryan learnt from being around legends like Drogba, Lampard, and Ashley Cole? What makes a great dressing room character and why every team needs one What happens when a club loses its “win at all costs” mentality? Why the best Managers are honest with their players and who was the worst manager he played under What really goes on during loan deals, and why he cancelled his own loan? How do directors, signings, and behind-the-scenes agendas shape team selection? Money, Fame & Mistakes What's the financial trap that catches most young players off guard? Why do so many players go broke despite millionaire contracts? The mistake that almost cost Ryan his England career Why did Ryan get into investing and how's he helping other players now? What does Ryan think about today's player brands? Retirement, Identity & Reinvention What's the real emotional toll of retiring from football? What happens to your identity when you're no longer “the footballer”? What advice does he give to younger players about career and legacy? Why did Ryan refuse to be defined by punditry or football alone? What would he change about how football prepares players for life after sport? Arsenal Fan TV host Robbie Lyle is the latest guest to join John Obi Mikel and Chris McHardy on the Obi One Podcast, and as you'd expect, it's full of passion and disagreements! Robbie has built AFTV into the biggest fan network in the world and is well-versed in defending his team to the hilt, even in the face of a Chelsea great. In this episode, Robbie reflects on the tenure of Mikel Arteta, ponders whether he is still the right man for the job and discusses what is needed in the summer transfer window. Robbie and John also deliberate over a combined Chelsea-Arsenal XI, which leads to one astonishing omission. https://www.instagram.com/obionepodcast?igsh=MWNzbHVocHdzeWZwdA== https://x.com/obionepodcast?s=21 https://www.facebook.com/share/1AJ7ZPB4Cp/?mibextid=wwXIfr Learn more about your ad choices.

In the latest episode of the Obi One Podcast, John Obi Mikel and Chris McHardy track down one of the greatest midfielders of his generation. A treble winner with Barcelona and one of the catalysts for Manchester City's recent dominance. It's Yaya Touré. Hailed by John as ‘the most complete African footballer to ever grace the Premier League, Touré cuts a laid back figure as he opens up on his early days at Barcelona, and how set about adapting to the demands of playing for ‘Més que un club', which included a reluctant date with a certain Cristiano Ronaldo. Touré also gives his verdict on Pep Guardiola's role in changing the game as we know it, reveals just how close he came to joining his ‘dream club' Arsenal and lifts the lid on his relationship with fellow Ivorian, Didier Drogba. And there's a bombshell admission to boot as well as he reveals the shock club he almost joined before land. https://www.instagram.com/obionepodcast?igsh=MWNzbHVocHdzeWZwdA== https://x.com/obionepodcast?s=21 https://www.facebook.com/share/1AJ7ZPB4Cp/?mibextid=wwXIfr Learn more about your ad choices. Juve uitgeschakeld. Gala door naar de volgende ronde. Ashley Cole has won the FA Cup more than any other footballer ever. 7 (SEVEN) times. Only a handful of clubs have won it more than he has, and he played for two of them. Oh, and he was also the best left back in the world. Ask CR7. Joe Cole was probably the first footballer to be known nationwide before he'd even kicked a ball professionally. A baller full of tricks, feints and skill, the kind of player who would give opponents nightmares before the match. He lifted the cup twice during his career during a glittering spell at Chelsea. These two pals and former team-mates have come together with Carling, the beer of football, for a new show all about the best club competition in the world. In this first episode, they recall their first trips to Wembley, how Mick Jagger may have put Joe off in the 2007 Final, why you didn't mess with Didier Drogba before a game, a very direct pep talk from Martin Keown and how Ashley felt leaving Arsenal for Chelsea in 2006. Hello Rank Squad! It's a Champions League week, so we thought it could be fun to throw up something a bit more evergreen whilst still linking into the action, so we're here to rank our favourites of a very exclusive list. We walk through the top 20 goal scorers in European Cup & Champions League History - which Erling Haaland has just catapulted himself into - and each pick out our three favourites from the list, based on our own personal criteria. Before that, we have a quick look at the evolving situation at Liverpool where the post-Klopp era is starting to get some structure, and what that means for the managerial merry-go-round in the summer. And of course, there's a Guru Wisdom, where this week we're helping Ellis to find himself a Premier League club. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
