Chicago organizers announced they will not host the annual Women’s March amid rising controversy about the national organization’s link with Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan following his anti-Semitic comments. Farrakhan drew criticism last February when he delivered a speech attended by the national organization’s co-chair with comments like “the powerful Jews are my enemy.” Though leaders of organization condemned his comments a month later, local chapters throughout the country began dissociating from the national group. The Louisiana Chapter of the liberal organization Women’s March canceled a planned demonstration in New Orleans, citing recent accusations of anti-Semitism by the group’s founders. The protest, initially planned for Jan. 19, is the latest casualty following shocking reporting that some of the most senior members of Women’s March discussed conspiracy theories about Jews and had close ties to the radical Nation of Islam. Rather than go ahead with the New Orleans protest, organizers said they will instead embark on a listening tour throughout the state. While allegations of anti-Semitism have torn through the national Women’s March group and a California march was canceled over concerns it would be “overwhelmingly white," Cleveland’s march condemns all forms of discrimination. “Women's March Cleveland does not condone anti-Semitism, racism, bigotry, sexism, Islamophobia or any other forms of discrimination, and we urge our Jewish sisters in greater Cleveland and elsewhere to march with us,” Women’s March Cleveland organizer Kathy Wray Coleman said in a news release. "The Counseling and Mental Health Center at the University of Texas at Austin recently launched a new program to help male students "take control over their gender identity and develop a healthy sense of masculinity." Treating masculinity as if it were a mental health crisis, "MasculinUT" is organized by the school's counseling staff and most recently organized a poster series encouraging students to develop a "healthy model of masculinity."   The social contract The social contract is of course, the label for a view that an individual's moral obligations are dependent upon a tacit agreement among them to form the society in which they live. Between men and women, It was once – men are “superior” and women are “inferior”. Of course what nobody ever said out loud was that the inferior partners in that top to bottom relationship were the ones controlling the social identity and value of their superiors. Strong, large, and apparently in charge, men had the role of providers, protectors, and actors in the world, assuming risk, dispensing and absorbing violence – and when convenient for the interests of others, dying. In exchange – men got a social identity as humans. Fast forward fifty years, and that positive social identity is no longer a part of the deal, but the onus to provide, to protect, and die, we've still got that. So what possible answer can any of this have? Quite simply, the deal is off. The social contract is broken.
