The Beatles are coming to Jerusalem, well, with a little help from their friends. A Spring music festival is taking place Thursday, May 30th of Beatles tribute bands. This concert is being hosted at an interesting venue, the Kfar Shaul Mental Health Center in Givat Shaul. It's the first time that the mental health center, which is housed on beautiful grounds, has agreed to open its gates to a music festival. Organizer Tracey Shipley, a creative therapist working with youth mostly through music and who ran the Woodstock Festivals in Jerusalem, spoke with reporter Arieh O'Sullivan on not only the physical, but psychological importance of the concert and music now. This focused episode is about advocating for a child with a disability or who is neurodivergent. It features a panel of three distinguished parent advocates. The panelists share their experiences, stories, and professional knowledge. They talk about building meaningful relationships with IEP and IFSP team members, advocating when, from a parental perspective the district data isn't sufficient, continuity between classrooms, schools, and district policies, and influencing changes in culture and policy through meaningful relationships. The advocacy panel was recorded as a launch event for my memoir Love Is a Classroom. The topics discussed come from experiences I shared in the memoir. About the panelists: Kimberly Travers is dedicated to enhancing the lives of families and their children with disabilities along with the professionals who serve them by focusing on Early Intervention policy, practice, and research. Kimberly's professional and personal experience and expertise are critical elements that she brings to many classrooms, councils, boards, and workgroups, as well as professional development activities. Her passion for family-centered, natural environments, and evidence-based practices can be seen during her presentations and advisory work, inspiring families and professionals to team more successfully. Kimberly has extensive experience at the local, state, and national levels in the field of early intervention. Kimberly's work experience includes service provision and service coordination to infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families, training and technical assistance, and policy recommendations. Kimberly's journey as a parent of a child with a disability elevated her understanding of the importance of the family voice and informed decision-making at all levels. Sarah Davidon has over 30 years of experience in the field of policy, health promotion and prevention, early childhood models of impact, and children's mental health. She is a passionate and dedicated advocate for improving access to children's mental health care and creating effective public policies. As the Deputy Ombudsman at Colorado Ombudsman for Behavioral Health Access to Care (BHOCO), I provide leadership and co-create strategies to help those who are seeking care or providing care navigate complicated systems, investigate concerns and complaints, and assess recommendations for reform. In addition to my role as the Deputy Ombudsman, I am also the Principal and Owner of Davidon Consulting, LLC, a consulting firm that focuses on children's mental health and the intersection of mental health and educational systems. I have provided keynotes, presentations, facilitated dialogue, and policy strategy to various clients, including the Colorado School Medicaid Consortium, the Office of the Behavioral Health Ombudsman of Colorado, Georgetown Center for Child and Human Development, Community First Foundation (now Colorado Gives Foundation) and the Mental Health Center of Denver. I serve as an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University, where I advise multiple states on funding and policies related to early childhood systems and mental health consultation. Beth Cole has worked in early intervention since 1996. I began as a parent advocate after my son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2-1/2. I worked as a paraeducator for 6 years in the same K-8 school where my son was. I also worked at the local and state level in Colorado's early intervention Part C program for children birth – 3 with developmental delays and disabilities. I was very involved in helping to develop Colorado's Part C early intervention provider training and the telehealth training. I've now been working at WestEd since 2021, providing TA to state Part C programs on their fiscal systems and I'm a part of the team working on an OSEP-funded demonstration project that focuses on screening and referral to Part C or other early childhood programs. I received my masters in Nonprofit Management in 2004 and my Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Equity in 2019. The walls inside Bridge Healing Center in St. Cloud are painted soothing hues of blue and green, a deliberate effort to help visitors feel relaxed and welcome. The hallways are lined with colorful paintings by a local artist featuring people in East African dress, with encouraging phrases in both English and Somali.“A lot of people, when they walk in, they see these pictures and they feel welcome, because it kind of reminds them of their culture,” said Lul Nur, the center's program director.Nur and Ali Aden are a husband-and-wife team of licensed mental health counselors. They moved from the Twin Cities more than a year ago to provide culturally specific mental health services mainly for the East African community, which St. Cloud lacked. Before the center opened, people were driving to the Twin Cities for services, which disconnected families and hindered them from being involved in their loved ones' treatment, Aden said.“We saw a need to bring that service from the cities to here,” he said.Minnesota has a shortage of mental health providers of color, especially outside of the Twin Cities metro area. In St. Cloud, that means members of the region's large Somali community can face language and cultural barriers to getting treatment.Bridge Healing Center began offering mental health counseling in June 2022. It recently added addiction treatment services, with lodging for up to six people. The couple said their own backgrounds help them relate to their clients. Aden is originally from Somalia and moved to Minnesota in 2007. Nur was born in Somalia, but raised in Egypt before coming to the U.S. Counselors at the center speak Somali, English, Spanish and Arabic. Talking with clients in their native language, instead of through an interpreter, is critical to establishing trust and reducing the risk of a misdiagnosis, Nur said.“A lot of mental health concepts are Western, so we might not even have a name for it,” she said. “It could really get messed up if the person who was translating doesn't really understand the word.”Aden said there's a need in the St. Cloud area for culturally specific treatment for substance use and addiction. The opioid crisis has hit Minnesota hard, and the Somali community is no exception, he said. But for many East African families, addiction is taboo and unfamiliar, complicated by religious prohibitions on the use of alcohol and drugs. “What's adding to it is the stigma,” Aden said. “It's hard for the families to open up and seek services. A lot of times we get a lot of calls — ‘My son is struggling. My daughter is struggling. I don't know what to do.'”Some Somali parents still have unhealed trauma from their own past — from fleeing a war-torn country, being separated from loved ones and losing a sense of belonging in a new country.Hani Jacobson is a community health nurse with St. Cloud-based health care provider CentraCare, which refers patients to Bridge Healing Center. She said some refugees survived traumatic experiences such as war, famine and torture.“When your whole life has been fight or flight, it becomes part of your normal daily life,” Jacobson said. “So it takes a lot of effort and education, and just letting our community know that it doesn't have to be like this. You don't have to live in survival mode anymore, and there's help out there.”Meanwhile, the younger generation sometimes experience secondary trauma from hearing about those experiences from their parents. And they may feel torn between their Somali and American identities, feeling like they don't fit in either one, Aden said.“The parents are not equipped enough to address the current stressors that their kids are going through,” he said. “So the kids will feel isolated. They will feel distant from their parents. They will have less connections.”That can lead to mental health issues or substance use. Often, the first instinct in East African culture is to keep such struggles within the family until it becomes too much to handle, Aden said.“It's very critical to provide education to the families,” he said. “There's help. There are people you can seek out, and don't wait until it becomes a crisis.”In the collectivist Somali culture, a family's opinion or fear of judgment can be obstacles to getting help, Nur said, but their involvement and support also can help the client succeed. So a lot of their work involves educating families that addiction is a disease that changes how the brain works, she said.“When they understand that piece, it's easier for them to be supportive than neglecting the child and saying, ‘You brought this on your own,' she said. “That mentality needs to change.”Word of mouth is helping generate more calls from people seeking help. Nur and Aden hope to expand their services and add lodging for women seeking addiction treatment.Aden said he's encouraged when he sees clients graduate from treatment, find a job, stay stable and repair broken family relationships."That's what makes success. That's how we measure it,” he said. “It's the number of clients who graduate from here, change their life, make an impact on their life and make an impact on their society as well too.”

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Gary Garth, an experienced entrepreneur and the author of ‘The Zero to 100 Million Sales Blueprint', a book targeting the entrepreneur that wants to scale their business with a replicable, reusable and scalable sales methodology. On this episode, the pair discuss how Gary found himself living in Medellín, Colombia, developing the Zero to 100 Million Sales Blueprint, what is Elev8 Media and when did he realise that work pressure may lead to addiction and mental health issues, and Gary's tips for sustainable growth. Make sure you listen until the end of the episode because Gary has a very nice surprise for you all! KEY TAKEAWAYS I exited a very successful business in 2020 but I didn't know what I wanted to do. So, I took a sabbatical year where I travelled around the world trying everything from plant medicine to figuring out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted to do something different and make a lager impact. Columbia had always been on my mind and Medellín had a vision of becoming the Silicon Valley of Latin America. So, I went to check it out and now I'm all in with several offices, an incubator, an accelerator, a marketing agency and some real estate investments. This is home now. I'm the Viking of Medellín. It's a hard journey. A lot of entrepreneurs have this fantasy vision of what it takes and 8 out of 10 cease to exist into year two and only one of those entrepreneurs makes it beyond $1 million in annual recurrent revenue. What's shocking is that most of those that become successful is that they experience burnout. When you dive into a venture like that you have to be prepared mentally, physically, spiritually for what's ahead; the adversity and how to overcome that. A lot of companies that pitch to me often have ground-breaking concepts, great ideas and they have prepared everything and anything you can consider, they've almost gone into analysis paralysis in terms of how the product should be shaped and so forth. But sales is left to the end of the equation. I ask what's your estimated cost of acquisition, what's the total addressable market, how are you going to penetrate that, who are your competitors, how are you going to differentiate from them? They don't have the answers to any of those questions. I'm giving back through my book where I talk about training thousands of reps over my career, over 200 re-sellers in a previous project, I've worked closely with Google's and Microsoft's sales teams, so I've been able to see what patterns occur, what works and doesn't work, and what it takes for folks to sell and create a true revenue machine. I've also created a planner to combat burnout where you can focus on gratitude, set goals, build habits and all the tips and tricks I've learned over the years. BEST MOMENTS ‘There's all these social media tips and hacks on how to be the next Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, but it's 16-hour days, there's no short cut.'‘To be successful you need to put sales and revenue first. If you don't have cash you're out of business.'‘Every entrepreneur has the desire to change and shape the world. The only way to do that is sustainability, to become profitable, that's how you can grow, reinvest and expand.'‘Double down. Don't back down. Things may seem uncertain and there's a lot of scepticism in the market, but I think there's a lot of opportunity. If you're hesitant about launching, expanding to a new market, if you want to wait for x, y, z scenario changes don't wait. Go for it.' In our conversation, Mike and I talk about his retirement from the NFL and the toll that this transition played on his mental health. He shares what that road to sobriety looked like and the mindset shifts that can help us all out in challenging times. We also discuss how addiction is considered a family disease, and what loved ones can do to show our support while setting boundaries and protecting our own energy. If you enjoy this episode, please feel free to rate and review the podcast on whatever app you're listening on, and share with a friend!CONNECT WITH MIKEWebsiteS: https://mhcsandiego.com/ and https://healthyliferecovery.com/Instagram: @mike.gibson69CONNECT WITH THE SHOWWebsite: WellnessAndWanderlust.netInstagram: www.instagram.com/wellnessandwanderlustblogFacebook: www.facebook.com/wellnessandwanderlustblogTwitter: www.twitter.com/moses_says
My guest this week is Mike Gibson. He played in the NFL for six years for the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals. His third year, he suffered an injury and became addicted to prescription painkillers. Mike eventually retired from the NFL and became a sheriff's deputy while still abusing prescription drugs. He was asked to resign after a year due to his unhealthy habits and became addicted to stronger substances. Mike finally made a breakthrough and has now been sober for more than five years. 4:50 – Mike 101 Mike is now a community outreach coordinator for the Mental Health Center of San Diego. He watched his older brother play sports growing up, and that made an impression on him. Football was a way to escape his mental health struggles. 9:39 – Mental health struggles Mike was always the short, stocky kid and was big for his age. He got made fun of a lot. Men don't often talk about body dysmorphia. 13:51 – From the NFL to community coordinator Mike struggled being in the NFL and felt like he wasn't being paid enough, so he decided to retire. He lost his sense of purpose and lost touch with his friends in the NFL. 21:13 – Drugs a symptom Most people who get help in the community center have mental health problems. Alcohol and drugs are just a symptom. Mike was known as a garbage can addict. He would take anything. 29:15 – Burning bridges Mike burned so many bridges with his family that they had to stop helping him. He didn't want to go to a faith-based rehab, because he felt like God wasn't helping him. But the decision to go changed his life. 38:34 – Still married Mike and his wife have been married for 15 years and together for 21 years. She is in recovery as well. They planned to divorce but ended up staying together after going to treatment. 49:14 – Get to know you Last time Mike laughed? When I told him I was a Brown's fan :) Last time he cried? When two friends passed away. FEATURED QUOTES Sports were a way for me to get out of myself. The beautiful thing about sports is nobody cares about your background. Nobody cares about financially where you live. If you're good and you can ball, you can ball. Men don't often talk about body dysmorphia. Men struggle with it, too. Alcohol and drugs are just a symptom. Many people are struggling with mental health. I was known as a garbage can addict. It doesn't matter what you got. I want it and I want all of it. https://mhcsandiego.com/ ABOUT MIKE GIBSON: Mike a scholarship to Cal-Berkeley for football and played for 2 years before he got drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008. He played a total of 6 years in the NFL (Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals). (NFL GUARD) In his 3rd year he suffered an injury and shortly after got addicted to prescription painkillers. He started at 5 mg of Vicodin and by the time he finished his career was taking a minimum of 300 mg of OxyContin daily. After he retired he became a sheriff's deputy, completing his credentials as class president, abusing OxyContin and adderall the entire duration. He was a deputy for under a year before getting asked to resign for his unhealthy habits. This setback turned him to becoming addicted to stronger substances such as heroin and meth. After going in and out of rehab 6 times, in his last session Mike made a breakthrough and has been sober for 5 years. He has worked in treatment centers as an addiction counselor for the entire 5 years he has been sober.
**Note the sound is terrible on my end as the connection was bad, but we've fixed that for all future episodes moving forward. Mike's sound is fantastic though and should be good to go** From having everything, to losing it all, to now making it back and sharing his knowledge with the rest of us. Mike Gibson is a retired NFL lineman, and now the Director of Community Outreach at The Mental Health Center of San Diego and Healthy Life Recovery. (mhcsandiego.com ) In our interview, Mike will be chatting with us regarding his football career. The ups and downs. The Junior College to D1 route he took. What he learned through that process, and what the transitions were like from JUCO to D1, and then we will also learn of the transition to the NFL where Mike played for 6 years. In Mike's third year in the NFL, he suffered an injury that required a big recovery. This is when Mike's story took a turn as he became addicted to pain killers. This addiction continued to get worse and worse, as his body became chemically dependent on some of these substances and he found himself in a downward spiral that continued not only through the remainder of his NFL career, but after he retired from the game as well. This is a story of addiction, of perserverance, of recovery, and redemption! It also goes to show that it can truly happen to anyone at any moment, so it's wise to become familiar with the situation and with Mike's story as it has the potential to help thousands of listeners out there! A community mental health center is quietly administering Ketamine to Coloradans who struggle with severe depression. Now 15 patients are receiving the treatment at the Mental Health Center of Denver. It's the only such clinic at a community mental health center in the state to offer ketamine as treatment, and it's one of few in the nation, for people with low incomes. The Federal Drug Administration approved the use of esketamine, a version of the drug ketamine, in 2019. Other clinics have opened around the country, but the treatment is still hard to come by for those who can't afford to pay or lack private insurance coverage. Colorado Sun reporter Jennifer Brown has the story. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
