A two-day event focusing on the preservation and cultural significance of dry-stone walling in the Burren will take place at the Common Knowledge Centre in Kilfenora this coming weekend (19th-20th July). Co-hosted by Clare County Council, Common Knowledge, the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark, the North Clare Communities Group and the Burrenbeo Trust, “Dry Stone Walls of the Burren”, follows the recent inclusion of Irish Dry Stone Walling on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Pilbara region of Western Australia is big, dry, and wide open. And it may contain the oldest cosmic “scar” on Earth: an impact crater gouged three and a half billion years ago. Scientists discovered evidence of the crater during a brief expedition in 2021. They found some rock formations called shatter cones. Some of the cones are as tall as a house. The only known way to make them is in giant collisions with space rocks. Follow-up work last year revealed many more of these formations. The cones were found in a rock layer that’s miles wide, but only a few dozen feet thick. The layer also contains tiny “beads” that formed when molten rock was blasted high into the sky. The flight through the air sculpted droplets of the molten rock into balls. Geologists found that the layer formed three and a half billion years ago, so that’s when the impact must have taken place – more than a billion years earlier than the previous record holder. The asteroid could have been miles wide, and blasted a crater more than 60 miles across. The effects of the collision would have been felt around the world. In fact, researchers say the impact could have helped shape the world. Major asteroid impacts could have traveled deep, churning things up far below the surface. That could have created the “seeds” that gave birth to the continents when Earth was young. We’ll talk about potential future impacts tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

The ground at Yellowstone is doing this weird rising thing, and naturally, it's got people wondering if we're in for a volcanic show. Geologists say it's not as simple as "up goes the ground, boom goes the volcano." Apparently, there are all sorts of factors at play, and Yellowstone is like a geological puzzle. The rising ground could just be a normal thing, or it might mean some underground magma shenanigans. But don't grab your emergency kit just yet – scientists are keeping a close eye on it, and for now, it's more of a "let's see what happens" situation. Our theme for today's program is resistance in the time of monsters: resistance to the Trump/Musk wrecking ball that threatens the well-being of millions of people here and across the globe. Their actions are illegal, have provoked a constitutional crisis, and constitute a technical coup. At the same time, the Trump/Musk rampage has galvanized resistance in the courts and on the streets. Suzi talks to Geologist and IFPTE local president Colin Smalley, who is part of the Federal Unionists Network, or FUN. They have called for a national day of action, an SOS — Save our Services — for February 19. We then turn to Canada, where Trump's across-the-board tariffs — though temporarily paused – threaten economic havoc with our largest trading partner, an unprecedented trade war. The promised tariffs have sparked a spontaneous national resistance across the country and across the political spectrum, uniting Canadians as never before. Canadians are fighting back against Trump's suggestion that Canada join the US as the 51st state. Suzi talks to NDP MP Charlie Angus about the power of a grassroots Canadian boycott and the ways Canadians are coming together to stop the Trump-Musk goon squad reign that threatens Canadian sovereignty. Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements.
