Ballentine v. Broxton
Sixteen and living in a small Michigan town, Gertie is harboring a secret heavy enough to fracture her closest friendship. She and Cindy have been bonded since birth by the fact their fathers are addicts, and their unsteady home lives are a little easier when they're together, sprawled on a trampoline with pilfered vodka and dreams of moving to New York. After an accident involving a bonfire and an aerosol canister sends Gertie to the hospital, she finds herself with nowhere to go but to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to live with her newly sober father. She sees it as a chance to escape the hometown drama she's caused, but drama finds her all the same: parties without curfews, boys without boundaries, a compromising photo, tragedy back home . . . and her father, once again teetering on the edge of oblivion. Terrified of the consequences of being honest with Cindy, her sole refuge is the fantasy novel she's writing, a portal to another world and the story of a young girl roaming a strange land, trusting her wits to survive.Years later, when ghosts of the past surface, Gertie decides to write again about that explosive summer from the stabler shores of adulthood. Powered by the fierce imagination of her youth, Gertie finally allows herself the grace to tell a version of her narrative that she always hoped would be true.Written with the feel and power of a ticking time bomb, Atomic Hearts is an unforgettable story of the ways we can be saved by friendship, love, and imagination. Shine in the Darkness: Living the Light of Christ In a dark prison cell, Paul and Silas chose praise over despair—and through their worship, the light of Christ broke chains and opened hearts. In Matthew 5, Jesus calls us the light of the world, not to be hidden but set on a stand for all to see. This week, we'll explore how God calls each of us to shine His light in the darkest places. Just like Paul and Silas used their gifts of faith, worship, and courage to impact lives—even behind bars—we are called to use the gifts God has placed in us to bring hope, healing, and truth to others. Your light has a purpose. Let it shine

Ballentine Vineyards, a Napa Valley staple since 1905, isn't just a winery—it's a living legacy. We dive into the story of a winemaker whose path to the vineyard wasn't exactly a straight line. He started out aiming to be a brewmaster, dabbled in forestry and photography, but ultimately found his groove in Fermentation Science at UC Davis. A globe-spanning exchange program took him to Germany, South Africa, and Australia, shaping his winemaking style before he joined the family operation in 1999. Bruce and his wife Danielle also run their own project, Three Clicks Wines, a nod to the telegram code that signaled the end of Prohibition. A journey filled with science, tradition, and a lot of heart. [Ep 370] ballentinevineyards.com threeclickswines.com

Many students at elite law schools end up working in Big Law for at least a spell. The Trump administration's attacks on the industry, and deals with some of its top players, are making the choice of where to start their careers much more complicated. Students are stuck between two very uncertain options: go to a firm that struck a deal with the White House, despite concerns about a lack of principles; or, go to a firm that's fighting Trump in court, despite concerns about the firm remaining financial stable. Bloomberg News reporter Claire Ballentine wrote about how students are making these tough choices and she speaks with Bloomberg Law editor Jessie Kokrda Kamens on this episode of our podcast, On The Merits. Ballentine talks about how some law students are organizing to help each other make a decision and how the massive debt loads many of them shoulder are factoring in.
