Bonnie Violet, a trans, gender queer drag queen, has many stories to tell. Growing up in Idaho, Bonnie Violet first found a fulfilling community in church and felt a calling within her to be of service to others. But her queerness and transness didn't feel compatible, at first, with the church, and she left it for a decade. But that calling still lived within Bonnie, as she worked in HIV/AIDS advocacy, and she began to reclaim the spiritual thread in her life, undertaking a remarkable process of healing that she shares in our Queer Devotions podcast. Now Bonnie Violet is “A Queer Chaplain” with a vibrant YouTube page and Facebook group, where she interviews drag queens about their spirituality, hosts multifaith discussions about transness and spirituality, and talks across the religious divide with her conservative aunt in a podcast called, Splintered Grace. Her work provides spiritual and pastoral care to queer and trans folks who are so often denied it. Standout episodes of her Drag & Spirituality series include her discussion with Ms. Penny Cost, Fonda Coxx, and a multifaith discussion with Mango Lassi, Coco Sho-Nell, LoUis CYfer. This work is now included in our Resource Portal, launched today with other work focused on the spiritual care of queer and trans people. This includes the memoir of Rev. Dr. Cheri NiNovo, The Queer Evangelist, Beloved Arise's album, Serenade, Ivan Coyote's new book Care Of: Letters, Connections, and Cures, and the article from Autrostraddle, “Queering Faith: Reclaiming the Holy of Spirituality.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/queerdevotions/message
Ashon Crawley is one of our absolute most favorite thinkers, writers, communicators, artists...all of that...Ashon graciously agreed to join us for our second annual "queer youth of faith day". This was an online festival designed to celebrate and empower queer youth of faith from all over the world. Ashon wrote a profoundly vulnerable and insightful piece for NPR about Lil Nas X's most recent single and video called "Montero". This episode is a live conversation with Ashon and several of the Beloved Arise youth for Queer Youth of Faith Day about Montero and the religious trauma that queer youth of faith often have to endure.
As Pride Month comes to a close, I wanted to take a different approach to a conversation that I haven't heard in many happening various faith spheres. Much of June is either filled with celebration and allyship or open condemnation towards the LGBTQ+ community. It's sad, yet not surprising, that Christianity takes such a binary approach. If the American church would learn to love like Jesus, this would all be different. The show is much less about pride and much more about supporting others. More specifically, it's a conversation about parents and caregivers of LGBTQ+ children. Joining me today are Adam and Michelle Palmer, who are both musicians and ministers with a lifetime of ministry work under their belts. They're also the parent of an LGBTQ+ child. So am I. Raising children can be difficult and, even with the best intentions, affirming parents can often feel at a loss on how to support and protect their children. Much of this is similar to the struggles of any parent. Yet when part of the world already prejudges others based upon identity or sexual orientation, it's hard to know how to help your kids. So, today's show is an honest and open conversation about supporting and loving LGBTQ+ children as they find their footing in the world. Hopefully, through our dialogue and stories, there's wisdom here for the taking. We're far from perfect parents, but the hope is to learn from our mistakes to love better and hurt less in the future. In a culture where polarization feels like it's increasing, understanding each other is a radical act. This week, Brian Falduto and I get into the fear, wounding, and shadow contained within straight men and men in the queer community, and how to create better discourse and understanding. Because while there are differences in experiential content, there's also more overlap than you might think. This was a great conversation, and I’m grateful to have had the chance to listen to Brian’s knowledge and experience. Brian Falduto is a professional actor, country music singer-songwriter, and ICF certified life coach. At the age of 11, director Richard Linklater cast Brian Falduto alongside Jack Black in the film School of Rock as Billy, a.k.a. “Fancy Pants.” He is a dual-degree graduate in Theatre Performance & Arts Administration, and proudly calls himself an alumnus of Wagner College. Brian’s discography includes a 2017 acoustic EP titled “Love One Another,” a 2018 debut studio album titled “Stage Two,” & other singular releases - most notably his recent single, “God Loves Me Too,” which went on to become a final nominee at the 2020 International Independent Music Video Awards & winner of the Fan Favorite category. In addition to garnering support from The Trevor Project, GLAAD, & other LGBTQ-affirming organizations & advocates, the song was chosen as the “Loud & Proud” feature on Apple Country's Proud Radio & also the official theme song for Beloved Arise, a non-profit organization celebrating queer youth of faith. Since re-emerging as an artist, Brian has had some amazing opportunities to share his life story openly & honestly through public speaking engagements, podcast appearances, self-authored content pieces, & media interviews; most notably his now-viral video with Now This News. In 2018, PrideLife Magazine named Brian one of the “20 most influential, outspoken, & optimistic individuals on the planet” in their 20th Anniversary #20intheir20s issue. Brian also works as a life coach serving primarily LGBTQ+ clientele. In 2020, he launched The Gay Life Coach Podcast, The Gay Men's Self-Help Book Club, & The Gay Men's Mindfulness Collective as part of his efforts to create mindful conversation & content surrounding the effects of internalized & externalized homophobia, & how one might heal from those experiences through expanded awareness & a deeper connection to oneself. The Church and the LGBT community have been on a collision course from the beginning. It seemed like we'd reached a boiling point this past decade at the hands of the Federal government. But and unexpected compromise has appeared in the form of Queer Theology and Gay affirming churches. What was once an outlier movement has quickly started to go mainstream as more and more people seek to "deconstruct" their faith. Believe it or not, this discussion is at your churches front door, if not inside already, and we all need to be ready for it. This week we're joined by Matthew M., social media intern for Beloved Arise, a non-profit, queer afirming faith foundation, to discuss the details of the movement. What does it believe, what are it's roots, and how does it deal with the passages that appear to be in opposition to an LGBTQ lifestyle? Plus, Solomon's frontline covid account. Matthew can be found on Instagram and Tik Tok at @headphonematthew. Beloved Arise can be found on Instagram at @beloved_arise.
Wow... what a rollercoaster of year. As much as we love to pretend that we're in control of our lives, 2020 is definitely a year that proves that 'anything can happen'. It isn't hard to look back on 2020 and say THANK GOODNESS THAT'S OVER. But have you taken the opportunity to look at what you've learned about yourself in the past 12 months? How have you grown as a human in the last year? And maybe even go as far as to think about what's made you proud of YOU in 2020. Like most of us, 2020 has been full of ups and downs for me. After a lifetime of hiding so many parts of my life, never did I think I would ever share so openly about religious trauma & spiritual abuse, mental health, addiction, suicide and so many of the developmental challenges that I've faced because I was born gay and grew up in the evangelical church. Thank you for listening. Thank you for hearing me. Thank you for sharing some of your time to know me. Isn't that what we're all searching for? To be heard. To be seen. To be known. To be loved. As we close out the year I'd love for you to consider supporting Beloved Arise as they build a space that fights for queer youth of faith. Beloved Arise is in the home stretch of their 'Build the Future' campaign and I'm here to publicly pledge my support and to ask you to consider the same. How will your support be used? to build a weekly rhythm of inclusive youth group activities that can be access from around the worldmental wellness programming, community service projects, spiritual programming and social gatherings... just like a church youth group... but one that affirms everyonecreation of a BelovedArise app to create a SAFE space for youth to connect, have small groups and to access resourcesa new trauma informed mental wellness program designed to help LGBTQ+ youth overcome hopelessness, embrace their wholeness and flourish as young adults. I know that 2020 has been a tough year for so many but I know and trust that support for Beloved Arise will not only help young adults flourish. It will save lives. So what about you? What's your 2020 wrap up look like? I'd love to hear some of the things that you've learned about yourself. I'm looking forward to sharing my next story episode called 'Sweet Validation' with all of you on Thursday January 7th, 2021 Thank you again for all of your support, encouragement, love and community this year. 2020 has been a wild ride but as they say... the best is yet to come. I hope you all have a safe and healthy New Year You are loved. James.
