"If we can inherit the trauma from our ancestors, then that means we can also inherit their wisdom, their goodness, their fortitude, their strength."Daria Burke would have had a very different life if she'd chosen to accept what seemed like her fate, but she knew innately that the addiction her parents struggled with and the neglect she endured didn't have to shape her future, too. In Daria's new book, Of My Own Making, she writes about the incredible path she carved for herself, from a life of poverty to a career in the C-suite.Daria and I discuss how she overcame her difficult childhood, the importance of therapy when working through trauma, and how she eventually learned to prioritize personal alignment over career ambition. Daria is a no-nonsense narrator, a wise teacher, and a beloved coach who shows us the stories we've told ourselves don't actually have to define our lives. He created and produced, ‘The Cork Dorks'. The show was hosted with Adam and his good friend Jeremy West. It was the first of its kind. It began focusing on central coast wineries but as the show grew, so did their ability to travel and meet other winemakers they found everywhere from Napa to Bordeaux that adopted that same Central Coast quality of people willing to share their wines, and their stories. As the area's producer's grew, soon Adam's interview's covered everything from spirits, craft beer, cider, cuisine, hospitality, and more. HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersRising Australian rock outfit Vermantics are a band with a purpose. But although they might still be finding out the intricate details of just what that is as they make their way through the trappings of the music industry, one thing they are already sure of, even in their formative year,s is the need for independence. The need to forge, then follow your own path.Vermantics are at that tender stage of any band's career where they are currently hot property, and as such, people from all walks of life and expertise have an opinion on their lives, their sound, and their musical output. But they are also confident enough in their own ability and vision that, while taking any and all advice on board, stick to their own musical needs, throwing caution to the wind but doing so on their terms. This is clearly evident on the band's latest single Come Alive - with the music video premiering today, April 17 via HEAVY - a song that retains the raw elements from its birth and is delivered from the heart, complete with imperfections. It is raw, live-sounding, and infinitely better for the touches added - or left out more accurately - in the studio.HEAVY sat down with vocalist Stefan Fedele to find out more."The previous stuff we put out was a lot more produced and had a lot more effects," he affirmed. "It was just a bigger production, whereas this one is definitely more on the raw avenue, and things are played in real time. The vocals haven't been tuned anymore and the drums are played with no cutting. So yeah, all those things make a big difference, and it's heading in the way that we want it to. This is where we're at right now."In the full interview, Stefan spoke about the accompanying music video for Come Alive, which is designed to reflect the energy of the band's live performances. He explained the strategy of releasing the audio of the single ahead of the video to build anticipation and allow listeners to engage with the music directly. He also mentioned that Come Alive is the first track from their upcoming EP, The Pictures You Paint, which aims to showcase the band's artistic vision. We spoke about Vermantics' upcoming Melbourne show as well as their first international tour in May, discussing how to approach your first tour of another country and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

"No matter what we navigate, adversities or joys alike, there are elements of who we are that are innate. I don't think they change just because circumstances change. I actually don't think we change at all. We just evolve."Mallory Weggemann was just 18 years old when a series of routine epidural injections for back pain left her with no movement from the waist down. Now, 17 years later, Mallory is a gold medal paralympian; an author, filmmaker and motivational speaker; and a fierce advocate for the disability community. In 2021, Mallory released her memoir LIMITLESS to share her journey and to empower others to overcome life's obstacles. And last year, Mallory and her husband released Watershed, a powerful documentary about her life story, including the couple's struggles with infertility. On top of that, Mallory brought home gold and silver medals from the Paralympic Games in Paris, making her a seven time medalist.During this conversation, Mallory and I discuss how she fell in love with the sport of swimming, what helped her navigate the trauma of becoming paralyzed, and the kinds of conversations she hopes to spark about disability in the world. Mallory's drive and determination to achieve the seemingly impossible, her advocacy on behalf of others, and her refusal to give up even when things seem insurmountable make Mallory Weggemann a Firestarter. To read more inspiring stories from Firestarters like Mallory, preorder my book “Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark Into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age” at firedupbook.com.My new book Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark Into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age, is available for preorder! Description: Today's guest, Shannon Watts, has come to be known as a formidable force in the world. As the founder of Moms Demand Action, the largest grassroots movement against gun violence formed after the Sandy Hook school shooting tragedy in 2012, her activism has mobilized millions of moms to successfully pass  over 500 gun safety laws. As Amy poignantly stated, Shannon's work “has legitimately made a tangible impact on the safety of my kids in their classrooms”, demonstrating the profound significance of Shannon's contributions. Watts has since shifted her time and attention to empowering women, whom she credits as the real changemakers in any movement. She has founded the Firestarter School, a platform designed to help women reclaim their power and has a forthcoming book,  Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age, releasing in the summer of 2025, which explores the necessary elements needed to ignite a fire in your life and pursue your passion and purpose. Thought-provoking Quotes: When you get involved in something like activism, it helps you realize that you have all of this untapped power.  And it does give you the audacity to become a firestarter, to prioritize your desires over your obligations. – Shannon Watts Right out of college, I married my college sweetheart at 23-years-old. By the time I was 29, I had three children.  I have a job I don't love. By my mid-thirties, I realized, this is not the person I would have chosen to be. I was having a difficult time acknowledging that I was living a life that was not true to me. – Shannon Watts So many women keep collecting new fuel, acquiring new skills, waiting for the other pieces to come together.  And we're prepared when the opportunity presents itself. – Amy Hardin Society shoulders women with so many burdens so she doesn't have room to explore her desires.  If you're going to claim space, raise your voice, you are going to get blowback.  The direct proportion of how much you can grow your fire corresponds to how much blowback you're willing to withstand. – Shannon Watts Remind yourself of your wins everyday, whether they're your wins or wins for what you want to see in the world. Give yourself hope and affirmation. – Shannon Watts Fighting for your safety and your rights is a form of self-care and a form of protection for other people. – Shannon Watts Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Camino Made (B.T. However, at 18 weeks, doctors told Amanda she had miscarried. SXSW Announcement | Vivien Leigh's Story Will Come Alive In The Florist (Film)

We came to SXSW this year to cover all things beauty, exciting brand partnerships, and of course, film. But this year was extra special because Look Behind the Look had the opportunity to spotlight The Florist, a new film WE are producing and so excited to share about. The Florist written by Jayce Bartok tells the untold true story of Vivien Leigh's later years as she battles Bipolar disorder and builds a very special relationship with a local florist. Starring Carla Gugino as Vivien, the film explores artistry, human connection, and the tension between her brilliance and the turmoil surrounding her struggles. We are gearing up to begin production this spring in Philadelphia. We have an incredible team behind the film and our powerhouse producer Lauren Hale Rieckhoff was invited to speak about The Florist at the Keystone House as part of the Amplify Philly: Behind the Lens – Pennsylvania Filmmakers in Focus panel. Armed with posters, postcards, and a mission, it was an amazing afternoon sharing the film alongside other celebrated indie filmmakers. Gino Pesi hosted the discussion, which covered Pennsylvania's commitment to filmmakers, its production incentives, and why we chose to shoot in Philly. Lauren shared our journey, what's next, and most importantly, how people can get involved to help bring this film to life. “For women, people of color, and anyone on the margins, there's a culture and society that wants to dominate us; to keep us oppressed and in line. The more that we fight through it, the better off we are and the more fires we can start to disrupt the world around us.”Alencia Johnson is an award-winning commentator, political advisor, leader and now an author who is teaching people how to be everyday disruptors. After working on presidential campaigns of President Obama, Senator Warren, and President Biden, Alencia went to work for Planned Parenthood where she helped create “Stand with Black Women," a campaign to call attention to Black people's bodily autonomy and dignity. Alencia's debut book Flip The Tables: The Everyday Disruptor's Guide to Finding Courage and Making Change, a manual for finding your audacity, shaking up the status quo, and creating a better world, is out now.During our conversation, Alencia and I discuss the life lessons she took away from being raised by activists, the mental and physical health struggles that helped her focus on her personal fulfillment, and how she found the courage to be an agitator for good. Alencia is a strong and compassionate leader, a bold and confident risk-taker, and a courageous warrior for justice and equality. DateFebruary 9, 2025SynopsisIn this sermon, we explore what it means to be fully alive to God's world through the lens of Howard Thurman's teachings and the courageous story of two Hebrew midwives. We discover that transformative change often begins with small acts of faithful resistance, whether it's a stranger's $2 gift or midwives choosing life over empire. The core message is radically hopeful: we each have a unique role in God's restoration of the world, and our calling isn't to do everything, but to do what makes us come alive. When we root ourselves in divine love and step into our authentic purpose, we join a larger story of liberation and justice.ReferencesScripture: Exodus 1:8–22About The Local ChurchFor more information about The Local Church, visit our website. Many believers know they have new life in Christ, but why does it feel like they're still stuck in the past? Why do so many struggle, walk away, or live beneath their God-given identity? In this message, we unpack the powerful truth of Isaiah 43:18-19 and the parable of the prodigal son to reveal what it truly means to revive, come alive, and fully live. God has already made a way, but we must perceive it, embrace our sonship, and let go of the illusions that keep us bound. It's time to step into the fullness of life that's always been yours!

DateFebruary 2, 2025SynopsisIn this sermon, we dive into what it means to truly "come alive" through the wisdom of Howard Thurman. We explore how recognizing the divine spark in ourselves—and in those we struggle to love—transforms how we show up in the world. This message wrestles with Jesus's call to let our "yes be yes and no be no," inviting us into a life of radical integrity and courageous love. Drawing from Matthew 5:37 and Thurman's theological legacy.ReferencesScripture: Matthew 5:1–16, 33–37About The Local ChurchFor more information about The Local Church, visit our website. Feedback? You'll learn about your three centers of intelligence—intellectual center, emotional center & instinctual center—and why having them aligned is so important and what to do when one of them is clouded by some experience in the past.   This is a very practical podcast, one that can show you how to feel alive in '25. Hope Darst has been leading worship – both in her home church and on stages around the world for decades, although unlike most artists she signed her first record deal at the age of 39 in 2019. Since then, she's penned several singles that have blessed millions of believers including Peace Be Still, Come Alive, and If the Lord Builds the House. Tasha Layton's vocational and life experience is crazy colorful – before coming to faith in Jesus Christ, she studied Buddhism and spent four years touring all over the world as a back-up vocalist for pop superstar Katy Perry. She's now a Christian music favorite and her latest single – Worship Through It – which is especially pertinent for today's conversation – was number one on the charts recently. Our third worship tutor today is Hillary Scott. If you're a country music fan, you're familiar with my dear friend Hillary because she's part of the platinum selling, multiple Grammy and CMA award-winning band, Lady A. What you might not know is that Hillary began her storied musical career as a worship leader and has never stopped using her pipes to point people to Jesus. Rounding out this fabulous foursome of guests on the porch today is Rita Springer. If you mention the name Rita Springer in the company of young worship leaders, it's likely one or two will involuntarily gasp because she's sort of like the Michael Jordan of worship leading. In addition to writing and recording songs for the church at large for the past 30+ years, Rita has also mentored hundreds of Christian artists and worship leaders around the world. Having Hope, Tasha, Hillary and Rita here together to dive into the theology of worship is the equivalent of having Muttiah Muralitharan and Richard Hadlee here to dive into the subject of bowling because they are two of the greatest professional bowlers the world has ever seen. Okay, maybe that wasn't the best analogy since bowling does seem to be more of a niche sport, but the bottom line is we've got a few of the most experienced and humble worship leaders of this generation gathered on the porch today to help us lean more fully into the embrace of Jesus, which is what shapes how we live and lead as Christ followers. I'm so excited about how God is going to reveal Himself to us today so please grab your Bible and your favorite beverage and your most comfortable chair and pull it up close to ours on the porch because believe me, you're going to want to hear every single word these saints share today.
