“How living with no nuts takes balls” Ben Bowers.Oh, what an amazing character this guest is. I was going to divide this episode up because it's long, but I haven't because damn it's too good and you won't want to stop listening. Movember ambassador and cancer survivor Ben Bowers battled testicular cancer not once, but twice. Embracing his nickname 'No Balls', Ben tells us extremely honestly and bravely about his unbelievable journey from the discovery of the first lump, major operation one, his chemo journey (whilst his then wife was pregnant), to having a baby whilst going through this battle. Then how this impossibly hard time led to the demise of his happiness and then his marriage, to then finding another lump - a second dose of cancer meaning another operation, more chemo, depression, breakdown. Then we talk about how he managed to turn this horrendous and very, very scary journey in to a positive. Ben really opens up about what he has learnt about himself from this ordeal and he gives the most incredible advice about the importance of opening up to friends and family, having the courage to ask friend's for support, how getting help and therapy is vital and how listening and communicating is the key to life..What he is doing for mental health, for Movember, for raising awareness of cancer and communicating and improving mens health is so inspiring. Thank god so much good has come from what was so hard..It is humbling, so raw, so emotional. Eric Yang started Gear Patrol as a side hustle to his job at CBS because the publications he knew we missing the mark when it came to product coverage. "The men's magazines out there -- GQ, Esquire -- they were increasingly unrelatable to me," Yang said on this week's episode of the Digiday Podcast. "For me it wasn't about a Brioni suit and living your best lifestyle in New York. I had my own personal interests, and that for me crossed over between automotive and tech, and you had magazines that were just really focused on bro culture in men." That was in 2007. A few years later as Gear Patrol took off, Yang and his colleague Ben Bowers quit their jobs at CBS to dedicate themselves to the site full-time. They've since announced a minority stake investment from Hearst (last April), launched a print magazine and e-commerce efforts and landed about 5.5 million unique visitors in what was recently their "best month ever," in Yang's estimation. "We've been profitable every single year at Gear Patrol except for the year we took investment because we were growing," Yang said. He adds that about 40 to 50% of their traffic comes from SEO, not social media or other sources. "It's a lot of direct traffic, and the direct traffic is actually growing, for us." Yang talked about when he decided to leave CBS and make growing Gear Patrol his full-time job, the thin line between media and commerce companies and how the website's reluctance to depend on social media turned out to be a smart move.
In this episode, Amy and Paulie are joined once again by Ben Bowers, who gives us a detailed trip report on his family sojourn to Walt Disney World, and OH are there outtakes!

An explosive (or not...) final episode of our fourth season in which we try a Gordon & MacPhail cask strength Miltonduff whisky, which was 20 years old and an absolute beaut! We were lucky enough to sit down with G&M's very own Ben Bowers at the Newcastle Whisky festival and discuss how the company is evolving, and try the whisky itself. We play some tracks, as always, to accompany the whisky, and this time we focussed on festival headliners to keep in with the theme of the whisky festival we attended. We also have a song suggestion from a twitter friend we met at the festival, Scott Munro, and do the usual Science Bit, and Dramier League Table. Please follow us on twitter @thisismydram, and visit our website http://www.thisismydram.com. Cheers! This Is My Dram have a PRS LOML licence to play full tracks on the podcast.

The lads also try a relegation dram, Fujikai 10yr, an "interesting" dram to say the least! They also have a much more pleasant experience trying some fudge from @iheartwhisky. The controversy over Beam Suntory's sudden decision to change its plans for a Booker's Bourbon price hike during the New Year's holiday weekend left both retailers and consumers confused. We'll look at whisky pricing from the retailer's perspective with Ryan Maloney of Julio's Liquors in the Boston suburb of Westborough, Massachusetts, and he'll explain how retailers set their prices and work with whisky makers and distributors. We'll also catch up with Ben Bowers as he winds up his "A Dram a Day" campaign to raise money for a British children's hospital on WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Constellation Brands is still expanding its craft distilling portfolio with a deal announced this week for a stake in Virginia's Catoctin Creek Distillery, frequent fliers will find a new Bourbon bar in Louisville's airport, and with the inauguration of Donald Trump closing in, a signed bottle of the Scotch Whisky bottled for his first Scottish golf course is going on the auction block.
