I have spent the last 10 years working as a TV presenter in sport at a World Championship level and what I have found fascinating since I began, is what elite athletes 'have' that set them aside from the rest: why their role is important to them, what drives them, what hinders them, their attitude t…

My guest today has struggled with her weight for most of her life and she truly understands just how hard it is to live with obesity. .10 years ago, Sarah Le Brocq was 24 stone. She applied to be on the show Fat: The Fight of my Life, she was selected to feature on the show and over the course of that following year she lost 8 stone and competed in various top level endurance events. However, over the subsequent few years, she regained most of the weight, despite continuing her intense training. This encouraged her to delve a little deeper and she learnt more about the complexities of obesity..Sarah is passionate about reducing weight stigma and is spending much of her time dedicated to raising the awareness of these complexities. In this chat we discuss the damage done by the labels given at childhood and through the tough years of adolescence. We discuss fad diets, fat pills, the myths around obesity and pregnancy. We talk about the desperate need for an update in knowledge and language by teachers, healthcare professionals and, well, just about everyone else too really.... and, as always, so much more..This raw, honest conversation is so brave and I really hope it opens your eyes as much as it did mine. Obesity is a disease. For there to be changes, we all need to step up and take part like Sarah is doing. .Please do follow her on https://slebrocq.com @s_le_brocq
For years, Jessie Asya Kanzer felt like a failure, unable to “make it,” either as an actress or in the rat race. Her childhood as a Russian immigrant in post-Cold War America heightened her insecurity and threatened her identity, desperate as she was to fit into a culture that was alien at best and hostile at worst. .This loss and eventual reclamation of her sense of self sent her on a more spiritual path during which she discovered the Tao Te Ching, which changed everything for her. .The Tao taught her that there was power in stillness, and that all struggles come bearing gifts if you know how to recognize them..We cover so much from: how to tap into and trust your intuition; how the Tao can cure you of perfectionism and people-pleasing tendencies; why it's important to continue to embrace stillness, even amidst a push to return to “normal” following the pandemic; and so much more... reminding us that there's power in slowing down. .Her book "Don't Just Sit There, Do Nothing" offers practical, actionable insights on incorporating its wisdom into your everyday life.#mentalstrength, #mentalattitude, #mindsetunfiltered, #mindset, #mentalhealthmatters, #healing, #jessieasyakanzer, #positivemindset, #stressrelief, #alexlegouix, #podcast, #mindsetunfilteredpodcast, #namaste

I remember the day of the 7/7 London bombings. Normally, I would have taken the tube across london to make my way to Liverpool street where I was working in events but we had put on an event ourselves the night before and had basically decided to take the day off to recover..In a parallel universe, Martine caught the Circle line tube to work and sat just three feet away from suicide bomber Shehzad Tanweer. .The worst injured, and consequently last rescued survivor, Martine was trapped for over an hour having lost 80% of her blood supply as well as both legs above the knees. What followed was a painful year of rehabilitation including learning to walk again on prosthetics..She considers herself a lucky woman with a whole new life of opportunities. Martine has since rebuilt her life, skydived, earned her pilot’s license, become a wife, become a mother, become captain of the British Paralympic Sitting volleyball team, charity ambassador, mentor to patients, inspirational and motivational speaker and author of ‘Unbroken’, where she recounts her inspirational journey - and for what, in 2018, she won Autobiography of the Year with..Since competing for Great Britain at the London 2012 Paralympics, Martine has gone on to present high-profile sporting events on the BBC and Channel 4, including the Paralympics and Invictus Games, and was a roving reporter at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. She won BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012 and last year was awarded an MBE for her services to sport and work as a role model for amputee athletes..Now, while playing sport, Martine wears her lucky number 7 with pride, transforming what happened into a positive and a clear and meaningful sign of her rehabilitation, and also in memory of those who lost their lives..Please, take some time out, pause and listen to this truly incredible woman. If you saw Dean in the street you'd think OK big, strapping lad, 6’4”, looks good, great shape, oozes confidence, probably a bit arrogant, clearly has life sussed and is very happy. Well that’s if if you went through life assuming and stereotyping anyway! (Let's NOT do that anyway, please!!) But either way... how wrong you would be. .Don’t get me wrong, he is some of the above. He is a 6’4 good looking, athletic gent but what you don’t ever know when you only look at the surface, it what is going on underneath. And for Dean, life isn't plain sailing. Fobbed off by doctors his entire life he was told he “just had PTSD like everyone else gets in the army – deal with it”. Given zero support, it wasn’t until he tried to take his own life in 2017, that any serious help was given and finally – at the very late age of 29 a diagnosis of bipolar was given. .In this honest, raw episode, Dean bravely opens-up about his journey... and as a PT and Mental & physical coach and speaker, he shares what helps him get through life from day to day and his tool kit, and how he has learnt to face his demons head on and how he manages to deal with life on a day to day basis..He is so interesting that our chat went on well over my planned hour, but it was such an open, beneficial and insightful chat that it felt only right to let it continue. At age 6, my dear friend Jamie Milton knew that deep inside she had a strong feminine spirit. However, it wasnt until she was 43 he had the courage to explore this more deeply and become the true Jamie - a lesbian trans woman. This is a very wonderful natter between two close friends where Jamie opens up about how she dealt with life, family, work, social pressures and expectations over these years..While there are so many traumatic stories about this topic, Jamie really wanted to get across that while the journey hasn't been easy and yes, has been one of the scariest of paths, it has also been relaxed and joyous and she wants to celebrate the huge progress that represents.. I have never known Jamie to be as happy and content as she is now. In this humbling and inspiring episode I chat to my dear pal John who woke up in hospital to discover he had experienced a tragic accident 6 weeks prior when riding his motorbike to work at Goodwood Festival of Speed, and was now paralysed from the T3 vertebra down - from the nipple line down. His total memory loss of the accident was somewhat of a blessing for him but tough, of course, on his loved ones around him. .This is an emotional episode but one that is full of courage and hope. We cover Johns journey from wake up until now. The hurdles and successes along the way. The magnitude of impact such a life event has had on his life and his family and friends. Glenn Haughton OBE was the First Army Sergeant Major for many years and is now the SEAC - The Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chiefs of Staff Committee and is The Armed Forces Mental Health and Wellbeing Champion. .I absolutely LOVE this interview. Glenn is SO fascinating. What a lovely, inspiring man. Itching to start at 13 he finally was allowed to join the army from 16 and enjoyed a 32 year career in the army with the last 2 years being in defence - a career he is SO passionate about. His many life changing experiences range from being deployed to fight in the hardest battlefield situations in the Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan Wars to receiving an OBE from the Queen and we discuss it all. .Not only that, but can you believe that even HE - a man who you would imagine is the toughest of them all, the bravest - has also experienced his own mental health lows - and not from battlefield trauma, like you would first imagine (although he obviously knows clearly how this pain can affect and talks as an expert in this area) - but from a 'mental burnout' as he describes it in which he totally broke down and fell in to a tough period of depression. He opens up about this period and discusses his daily '1-10 Mantra' that he uses religiously that I URGE you to try for yourself. What a great idea and one of the best daily toolboxes for mental health I have ever heard..Glenn Haughton OBE - SEAC- on what he has learnt from his amazing life in the army, mental health, mindfulness and thriving in lockdown. Thanks again to Matt Keel for this intro - the best photographer ever - and yes Glenn agrees ;-).Also on youtube - link coming shortly / head to Alexandra Legouix youtube
Alex Legouix chats to Italian psychologist and psychotherapist, Alessandro Carmelita about Mindful Interbeing Mirror Therapy.Alessandro has worked with some of the worlds most elite athletes and is working with a number of athletes who will be heading to Tokyo for the next Olympics. .A few years ago, Alessandro started to develop a fascinating new technique called Mindful Interbeing Mirror Therapy. It really is extraordinary and clearly is - and will continue to help - not only elite athletes, but anyone who wishes to cope with, or recover from trauma, from any form of emotional pain, body dysmorphia, dealing with the chimp brain and so much more, It's not focusing on the negative but more about activating and enhancing the brains positive thoughts. The concept is that it is creating new neural connections, new instinctive reactions to underlying problems and modifying negative memories and so on..I strongly urge you to give this a go and currently Alessandro is kindly offering my podcast audience one free session which is amazing, so do email him on info@mirrortrainingmethod.com and let him know you came via me, Alex Legouix..https://youtu.be/ojNaQow_xDo Youtube.#mirrortrainingmethod, #alessandrocarmelita, #psychology, #psychotherapy, #therapy, #eliteathlete, #mindset, #mentalpower, #CBT, #MIMT, #cognativetherapy, #mindfulness, #mindfulinterbeing, #mirrortherapy, #mindsetunfiltered, #mindsetunfilteredpodcast, #alexlegouix
S4 Ep2 Kevin Waite is back: Coping with Bipolar Disorder & other Mental Health issues during lockdown. In episode 10 of season 3 I spoke to Kevin Waite. It was filmed only 2 weeks after he had tried to take his own life. Kevin lives with Type 2 Bipolar Disorder, Imposter Syndrome and deals with persistent daily suicidal thoughts. So, with what the world is going through as a whole, I wanted to catch up with Kevin once again - this time via zoom, of course - to find out how he was dealing with life in quarantine and what advice he had for people who were struggling, mentally and physically, to deal with this new normality. After all, who better to ask than someone who pretty much deals with this confined feeling, all day, every day even when the rest of us are merrily going about our very lucky lives..Follow:@move_mind_and_body@mindsetunfilteredpodcast@alkilegouix@myzonemoves.This episode is brought to you by MyZone. Over the past couple of weeks i have been pondering a lot on what it is we need to do, individually and as a collective, to deal with this situation more positively..Over the coming episodes of Mindset Unfiltered podcast, i will be chatting to a variety of experts on this topic. In this episode I speak to James Elliott - Military Resilience Coach, Airborne Solider & 2 x Guinness World Record holder. This is a great episode. We spoke about so much! “How living with no nuts takes balls” Ben Bowers.Oh, what an amazing character this guest is. I was going to divide this episode up because it's long, but I haven't because damn it's too good and you won't want to stop listening. Movember ambassador and cancer survivor Ben Bowers battled testicular cancer not once, but twice. Embracing his nickname 'No Balls', Ben tells us extremely honestly and bravely about his unbelievable journey from the discovery of the first lump, major operation one, his chemo journey (whilst his then wife was pregnant), to having a baby whilst going through this battle. Then how this impossibly hard time led to the demise of his happiness and then his marriage, to then finding another lump - a second dose of cancer meaning another operation, more chemo, depression, breakdown. Then we talk about how he managed to turn this horrendous and very, very scary journey in to a positive. Ben really opens up about what he has learnt about himself from this ordeal and he gives the most incredible advice about the importance of opening up to friends and family, having the courage to ask friend's for support, how getting help and therapy is vital and how listening and communicating is the key to life..What he is doing for mental health, for Movember, for raising awareness of cancer and communicating and improving mens health is so inspiring. Thank god so much good has come from what was so hard..It is humbling, so raw, so emotional. Words from Kevin Waite February 6th 2020:"I survived a suicide attempt 2 weeks ago. No sympathy needed, I'm sharing to help others. It wasn’t a cry for help or me just being selfish. I live with a crippling illness every minute of every day. It just happens to be in my head. Just like any serious illness, it has the potential to kill me. That day, I couldn’t live with it. The illness hollowed me out, pinned me to the floor, and drained all my strength. I wasn’t thinking of what my death may cause to other people, I didn’t have the capacity for that in my mind. It was the only thing I felt I had control of, after months of inner turmoil. That day it seemed like the only logical answer to end the crippling pain in my mind. On the day, it was a complete stranger that helped me. .I’ve talked about this in two big mental health talks I’ve done since... again, to complete strangers. The support I’ve received from these complete strangers has been massive to me, but sadly it’s been more support than some of my close family and friends have shown. What I’m trying to say is... Lazy & selfish attitudes towards mental illness is killing people. We’re living in a mental health crisis, with people trying to take their own lives left right and centre... all the stats are out there. If you don’t know what to say, then just listen. .Listening is the most powerful thing when someone is feeling at their lowest point - they don’t need your opinions or agenda as that piles even more pressure on and patronises them. By not even listening or showing some level of support, can have a serious negative impact. If you’ve never been suicidal then you have no right to judge. A lot of my good mates have just said “what do you need from me Kev? Tell me what you need and I’ll be there” That’s massive and that’s all I needed. .I don’t need to hear that I’m upsetting people, as I’m so deep into my illness at that point. I never hide behind my mental illness and I believe I’m a very mentally strong person by doing what I do and fighting what I fight in my head. It doesn’t mean I don’t still have a serious illness (which has been diagnosed by 3 separate psychiatrists by the way). Sometimes, just like any other serious illness, the fight becomes too much. It’s taken me a lot to write this and if you’re still reading then I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I don’t need to hear about “the things I have to live for” or “things can’t be that bad” ...because no one knows how bad things are unless they listen. There’s so many organisations out there now supporting mental health because WE ARE in a crisis. It’s just ignorant and very dangerous to not try and educate yourself if someone close to you is struggling. .Sharing to help others helps me. Thank you to those who have shown love and support. I’m now back on top of it and fighting good" Kevin Waite.Kevin bravely opens up about how it is to live with type 2 bipolar disorder, imposter syndrome and dealing with persistent suicidal thoughts. Michael Maisey has turned his life around. Brutally and honestly written about in his outstanding book 'Young Offender', Michael went through things so tough and tragic it is truly incredible he is here to tell the tale. Repeatedly a victim of sexual, physical and mental abuse from almost all of the closest grown ups around him he fell prey to the claws of drug and alcohol abuse and fell deeply in to a life of crime which resulted in many years in and out of Feltham Young Offender Institute..He owns a life story full of some of the darkest, toughest and saddest experiences you'd never want even your worst enemy to have to endure. Yet here he is now out the other side - happily married with two kiddies, sober, sharing his amazing story in order to help himself, others and make a change to the system that repeatedly failed him..He is truly one of the most inspirational people I have ever encountered. He has not only gotten out of that dark world, but he is even able to forgive it and the people involved. He is proof that we can change. Life can change if you want it to..This is a powerful, vulnerable and informative chat. Michael doesnt shy away from my probing questions but answers with honesty, emotion and strength that I found truly awe inspiring. It was a privilege to spend time with him and this is a chat i can't wait to share with you.Under one of his instagram posts he writes: "For many years I wore a mask. The tough guy, the know it all, the charmer, the bully, the coward, the victim, the addict, the joker. I didn’t want to let the world see the real me, as I feared rejection, when I was really rejecting myself and how I truly felt when I looked in the mirror. I have found that we can only truly connect to others and to ourselves when we are vulnerable.Vulnerability opens the doors to intimacy, and intimacy is what all long lasting relationships are built on. I choose to welcome all of myself today, the good, the bad and the shadows" .On his book, Tony Parsons writes: "Young Offender is a memoir to shine a light in the darkest of nights, a harrowing, heart breaking autobiography that feels like it was written in tears and blood. Michael Maisey crawled from the wreckage of what feels like every bad break in the world – domestic violence, sexual abuse, drugs, alcohol, incarceration and cruelty that staggers the mind - emerging with a story of redemption, hope and love.".Its a tough read but one I highly recommend..Instagram:Mindset Unfiltered @mindsetunfilteredpodcastAlex Legouix @alkilegouixMichael Maisey @michaelmaiseyHost of @thecippodcastFounder of @thecipproject
Recently I was interviewed about my life and my journey on another podcast called Nathan K Ginger Beard podcast (https://open.spotify.com/show/2G5BjzWnjLqNolIocXMXRe) - one I would highly recommend (NB my episode is out soon about mental health so please do check that one out)- and throughout this process I was introduced to a lovely chap called Glen john jones..Glen is the author of highly successful book "Think and Grow Vegan" (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Think-Grow-Vegan-gradually-confidence/dp/1916118801) - a wonderfully witty, funny, personable book about the what, why and hows of gradually moving to a plant based diet. He reveals his journey from meat-eater to vegan through five easy stages and his honest account acts as a brilliant guide for you if you decide to make the transition from or to any of these stages. Having been toying with the idea of giving up meat for the past few months, I was extremely fascinated to chat to Glen about this journey..We discussed his reason behind his shift to the plant based diet. I was able to pick his brains about the pros and cons, his mindset shift, and the impact a diet like this can have on our mind and body. It was also extremely interesting to find out about the journey of writing and releasing a book, and his challenges that came with that... plus, both being personal trainers, we chatted about fitness, Glens crazy 2021 Ironman Goals and ... avocados..PLEASE review this podcast on apple/spotify. The reviews make a huge difference and the more I can grow this, the more it will help others :-)
In this episode I sit down TalkOut Co-founder and Managing Director, Jill Mead and Clinical Psychology Researcher – Natalie Edwards. . Jill chats about her journey when she slipped to her lowest low but eventually managed to claw her way out of the hole and how it was this journey that led her to meet Jim Cockburn and create TalkOut. They are working hard to break the stigma around mental health in the workplace. . In this chat we discuss the very scary stats that show just how much we need a company like TalkOut to help us all in the workplace; we discuss how to be aware of the signs that you're giving too much of yourself or struggling; we discuss how to open up about mental health issues at work; we talk about the effectiveness of Mindfulness and Meditation and how to implement that in to your working world... and so much more. . 1 in every 37 people will get Parkinson's. 1 in 20 are under the age of 40. The youngest diagnosed was a 2 year old. This is NOT an old persons disease like most of us think. You don't get any symptoms until 80% of the neurones in your brain are dead..Two days after his 36th birthday, Alex Flynn sat to drink his breakfast coffee and noticed his finger was shaking involuntarily. Thinking it was a one off, he thought nothing of it. Until it happened again a few days later. Told it was probably nerve damage after a sporting accident a few years before, they felt there was little to be too concerned about, until he went to have a scan and he was told that he had Parkinson's Disease. .This raw, open, humbling chat opened my eyes. I sat and chatted to my friend who did not stop involuntarily shaking before me for the entire duration. He had no respite. There is no cure. There is little support system in place for sufferers. .Since diagnosis Alex has done the Marathon des sables - the toughest foot race on earth - 251km across the Sahara desert in searing heat - the worlds toughest ultramarathon; He decided to do a challenge which he called ‘10 MillionMetres’, I'll let him tell you about what that entailed... its insane. He competed in the Men’s Health USA Ultimate Guy Competition, reaching the final nine competitors of over 1100. Amongst these competitors were included Special Forces members as well as US Marines. That year also saw him honoured by the UK Prime Minister at the time, David Cameron..He has completed his first book that chronicles his 10 Million Meters Challenge which will be published soon. A documentary film of his adventures has also been produced for television..What is coming up for him this year is literally unreal. You wont believe it. But it will be worth it. He is desperate to raise awareness for this heartbreaking disease. .For Alex it's too late but, my god, if he felt he was able to protect anyone else from going through what he is going through, I know he would be a happy man. .I cannot tell you how incredible this human is but this chat gives you a pretty good idea ;-) .Help Alex show the world "Parkinson's isn't the end of someones life, it's the beginning of a new journey. It's about challenging perception, creating hope, and hopefully realising better treatments for me and millions of people around the world".www.alexflynn.co.ukFacebook: Alex Flynn - Keep Moving - My Fight Against Parkinson's.
My guest this week is 18 year old Scott Mckenna. If asked at 14 what his dream was, it would have been 'racing driver', but asked what he thought his reality was likely to be, he'd have probably said "Ummm, working for Mum and Dad in Norway probably". Yet Scott is the 2019 British Ginetta GT5 Champion and one of only 13 British racers under 24 to be selected as a British Racing Drivers Club "Rising Star.' These young racers are chosen by the BRDC because they have achieved success in the upper levels of motorsport and are considered the ones to watch!.We chat about his very calm approach to his racing career - quite a different approach to other young drivers I have spoken to; we discuss how he stays focused over the season, how he deals with pressures and difficult hurdles; and we chat about how he juggles his racing career with his '18 year old world' which, certainly for me, would have been a hard one! Scott is taking every thing very much in his stride and I think you will agree after listening to this chat, why the BRDC have penned him as a rising star.Follow Scott's journey @scottkckenna27 and http://scottmckenna.net/author/scott-mckenna/.
For those of you who grew up in the 90's will remember the ITV hit show Gladiators fondly! How much did we all enjoy our Saturday evenings watching as these beautiful, tough gladiators and unsuspecting but courageous contenders battled while hanging from the rings in Hang Tough, running the gauntlet and then struggling to get up that bloody travelator... My guest this week on Mindset Unfiltered was one of the most loved and - call me biased but she was also by far the hottest gladiator, known for her infamous hair flick and her acrobatic skills... its Jet... or Diane Youdale..This is a fascinating chat. We cover her journey as a gladiator and learn what it was truly like to be Jet. We then chat about choice to leave the show and the aftermath of this. then her world afterwards as a qualified psychologist. Her fascinating time on Big Brothers Bit on the Side as the Psychotherapist. and we talk about how she is about to turn 50, some of the things she has learned along the way, and how sometimes, when life throws rocks at you, its giving you the opportunity to learn and grow from these experiences..During this chat, Diane talks about a new app called Lumen which is geared for people over the age of 50 entering back in to the scary world of dating. Check the link https://lumenapp.com/en/ .Hope you enjoy!
Terry Grant... what a legend... I first met Terry back in 2010 at Lydden Hill. We spoke for about 30 seconds and I knew instantly that this was a human I needed more of in my life. Over the years we have crossed paths so many times in the motorsport world and we became good pals quickly. .This man is literally like no other. For anyone in the motorsport world, he needs no introduction... but for my listeners who arent... this man is the most ridiculous professional stunt driver, he holds at least 23 Guinness World Records that include having executed the highest loop-the-loop in a car, the fastest two-wheel mile, the furthest barrel roll jump, the most doughnuts standing on the roof of a car, and the highest number of doughnuts in 100 seconds... and oh so much more... so many mental things....This chat is fascinating and emotional! Terry actually cries at one stage which I never thought he would do... I dont actually want people to cry when they talk to me, but come on... hes like the bravest crazy man in the whole world!!.In all seriousness though, Terry really opens up for the first time about his journey with Billy Monger - the racing driver who was critically injured when he was involved in a collision at Donington Park. Both of Billys legs were amputated, one below the knee and one above - and Terry opens up about his pivotal yet emotional role in helping get Billy back behind the wheel. .He speaks about what really scares him, how he deals with facing death on a daily basis and he talks about the highs and lows of his fascinating life.
My guest this week is my dear friend Rebecca Jackson... racing driver, tv presenter, very respected motoring journalist and very successful business woman... oh, and incredible mother to two of the most gorgeous twin babies.Rebecca also recently launched a new, very exciting project to help drivers gain sponsorship. Its called Sponsorship Academy - a very comprehensive 8 week online course with support from Rebecca herself..It covers every thing needed to help a driver on their racing journey including help with social media, how to pitch, how to organise themselves and much more. .For more details head to www.sponsorshipacademy.co.uk.Contrary perhaps to popular belief, Rebecca was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth, she has worked ridiculously hard to get to where she is now. .Rebecca chats about what she has learnt over the years, her daily mantra, how she has overcome hurdles, how she deals with negative emotions, and how she juggles her parenting world with with her business world as a single mum!.Rebecca has a wonderful approach to life. Her positive mindset overflows from her so much so its addictive and catching. Im so lucky to have such amazing pals.
I had a fantastic day last week at @autosport_international interviewing a plethora of interesting minds... including this man @gusgsmith who, after his amazing Word Rally Championship debut last year, has recently made the step up from WRC2 to drive 9 rounds of the 2020 season in WRC for M-Sport.His meticulous approach to his professional life is quite astonishing. Raw talent, endless passion, undeterred determination and total dedication are among the components to become a world champion and Gus, genuinely, oozes all of them..My man, Rupert Manwaring (@P1_Coach) is Gus's Sports Coach - so over the last 6 months I have gotten to know Gus as a friend too, and in addition to all of the attributes i just listed, I can add that he is a very nice, and very humble gent too.Gus starts by telling us about his journey in to the world of rally....

We touch on the very daunting stats too and how to take each day step by step to help you look up and forward and seeing a future..We cover survivor guilt. .Hair loss.Hear about Steves incredible podcast chat with George Alagiah Head to the podcasts page on the bowel cancer website. There are load of other podcasts there too that might be useful for you. The link is in the bio https://www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk/how-we-can-help/real-life-stories/podcast/.We also chat about the Bucket List... but also knowing when too much is too much, and not feel bad for saying actually, I need a break. So yes, bucket list and living life is great, but equally, its so important to feel okay to say "today I need a break" and not feel bad about it.Ill leave the rest to my man, Steve
A diagnosis of Stage 4 Bowel Cancer doesn't have to be the end of your life. It can be the reason to start livingit" Steve Clarke..While I am deeply saddened to be receiving messages from friends and strangers telling me of their own cancer news and journeys, I am so happy to hear that this podcast is helping people. Genuinely. And that is testament to what an amazing man Steve is..As part of Mindset Unfiltered, Alex Legouix talks with Steve Clark about how his positive approach has helped him cope with having advanced bowel cancer and has got him through several operations and six years of chemo (so far)..Steve is living a full and fun life as well as devoting much of his time to helping others with this disease. .There was so much to share that it’s formed three episodes and is definitely worth a listen if you or a loved one are facing cancer, or if you’d like to hear a truly uplifting story of how a positive approach to life can make all the difference..In this episode, he also talks about food and exercise and his attitude of "what's the point in going through all of this, if you cant do things that make you happy?".What are some of the things to avoid saying to a cancer patient? We touch on that..And finally we touch on prognosis... how to view the "time line" and understanding statistics...Almost five years ago Steve and I had tea (and cake... always cake) one day and he told me about an idea he had: to set up a charity called Strive for Five to help increase awareness of bowel cancer and give hope to people with advanced bowel cancer. So obviously he did this..Since then he has raised over £50,000 for the charity Beating Bowel Cancer through various means: Fitness, Yoga, Music, Art, Adrenalin you name it. In 2018 he held a huge mini festival to celebrate the charity success and his 5th year anniversary Steve is an ambassador for Beating Bowel Cancer and until very recently acted as a 'Patient Voice, Forum Moderator, campaigner and fundraiser'. He offers support and advice to people who need it. He has posted over 5000 updates on the forum and he helped to write updates of patient information booklets and factsheets including introducing advice on 'How to get the most from your chemo'.In 2017 Steve was a guest speaker at the major IMPACT initiative meeting. He spoke on how to help bridge the gaps in care. His speech was incredible and has done wonders for the listeners..He was also a panellist in a discussion at the European Patient Forum - again helping the industry on ways to better support patients..He has also presented to two major pharmaceutical companies who work in Bowel Cancer care to give them first-hand knowledge in to what it is truly like being a person with advanced Bowel Cancer and what they can do to help others..Not only that but Steve met The Right Honourable Theresa May MP just before she became Prime Minister to discuss the needs of Bowel Cancer patients..In 2016 Steve received the Beating Bowel Cancer Annual Achievement Award; the citation was "for everything you do to help others".In 2018 he won the major 'Healthcare Communication Advocate" award at the very prestigious 'Communique Awards' This is more of a lifetime achievement award, "presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution through healthcare communication throughout his career".Steve has made a REAL difference. Not only to me and all of his huge circle of other close friends but most importantly to millions of other patients and to the industry itself..He is a never ending inspiration and for his overwhelming effort to truly be noticed would be unbelievable..In all honesty... Even these awards are not enough to truly give back to someone so deserving.
6 months before diagnosis my dear friend Steve was a very healthy athlete (he was a high standard runner, martial artist and yogi). Suddenly his life changed completely. Racing is in the blood for Yann Ehrlacher…His uncle is none other than four-time World Touring Car Champion Yvan Muller, his mother, Cathy, was a respected single-seater racer in her own right competing in Formula 3 and Formula 3000 and the competitive genes don't stop there as his father Yves was a professional footballer who played for Strasbourg, Lens, Bastia and Mulhouse. Yann - by his own admission - didn't quite inherit the football skills but his racing ability is being proven time and time again. His success keeps growing and I genuinely believe it wont be that long before - like his uncle - we see the words 'World Champion' by his nameIf you haven't listened to my other episodes, please do so.
