Featured : THERESA MACPHAIL, Allergic: Our Irritated Bodies in a Changing WorldAllergies are a PROBLEM. Hay fever. Peanut allergies. Eczema. Most of us have an allergy to something, but what causes them and why do they seem to be getting worse? And why do some allergies kill? Meet medical anthropologist Theresa MacPhail; she is, herself, an allergy sufferer—and lost her father to a bee sting. It doesn't make sense that a part of our immune system meant to protect us goes haywire, so she set out to find answers… by starting in 1819. You know it's going to be good when we go digging into history! She starts with dangerous experiments of early immunologists and moves to the mind-bending recent developments of biologics and immunotherapies. And she gets her hands dirty along the way—no thought experiments here. MacPhail scaled a roof with an air-quality controller who diligently counts pollen by hand for hours every day; met a mother who struggled to use WIC benefits for her daughter with severe food allergies; spoke with doctors at some of the finest allergy clinics in the world; and discussed the intersecting problems of climate change, pollution, and pollen with biologists who study seasonal respiratory allergies. You have questions? She has answers! Join us for an unmatched discussion of the worst allergy season can throw at you—make sure to bring the tissues, just in case.Episode was recorded live September 25, 2025.Website: https://peculiarbookclub.com/Newsletter: http://eepurl.com/ixJJ2YVIP Membership: https://payhip.com/PeculiarBookClubYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@PeculiarBookClub/streamsBluesky: @peculiarbookclub.bsky.socialFacebook: facebook.com/groups/peculiarbooksclubInstagram: @thepeculiarbookclub

We were delighted to host an exceptional and highly skilled composer on our show this time. Martin Macphail is a member of the band Blitz//Berlin. A special guest who has composed numerous significant projects for short films, shows, trailers, feature-length films, and even video games. He has contributed to beloved horror films such as Psycho Goreman, Brooklyn 45, and The Void, among others. Additionally, he has collaborated with the gaming industry, working on titles like Far Cry and Perfect Dark. I thoroughly enjoyed discussing the challenges and rewards of being a composer in the industry with him. He shared invaluable insights and expressed his passion for the field. Their latest album is now available and is exceptionally well-crafted. We highly recommend checking it out and exploring his other notable works. You will not be disappointed! I'm also an Associate Professor of Science & Technology Studies at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. My first book for Random House is out now (2023). It's called Allergic: Our Irritated Bodies In a Changing World and it tells the story of the global rise in allergies over the last 200 years. My next book, that I'm currently researching, is on aging. It dives into what happens to our bodies and minds as we age and why acceptance of aging (and our eventual deaths) is the key to “aging well.” Think of it like a “user's manual” to your aging body (with a lot of troubleshooting sections). But, more importantly, it also traces out the long history of our fascination with aging and how and why aging transformed from a natural, normal, and healthy life experience into a medical problem or disease that needs to be “solved.” And what that approach to aging is doing to us collectively. Ever wondered why allergies seem to be on the rise? How about the intriguing link between the industrial revolution and our own immune responses?Theresa MacPhail is an Associate Professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology, a medical anthropologist, and author of several books. Her latest is called Allergic: Our Irritated Bodies in a Changing World.Theresa and Greg discuss the history of allergy research, the evolution of anaphylaxis, and the astounding revelations from her book, Allergic. Theresa talks with Greg about food labeling laws and the spike in pollen counts due to climate change. She also provides fascinating perspectives on how exposure to new pollutants, changing diets, and the advent of antibiotics have potentially disrupted our immune system's natural functioning. They dive into the importance of early investment in understanding conditions like asthma, food allergies, and eczema, alongside the potential dangers of overusing antibiotics. They also discuss what smarter societal immune responses would look like in preparation for future pandemics. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:The Importance of early adrenaline intervention in anaphylaxis13:59: What adrenaline does is it stops that histamine process. So the earlier you get a shot of adrenaline, the better your survival rates, which a lot of people don't know. It takes only 30 minutes for somebody to go from perfectly fine to dead on arrival at the hospital if you don't intervene in some way. And they have a serious anaphylactic response. So time is of the essence, and doing everything you possibly can, which is something I've been talking a lot about when I'm talking about the book because that's something that's easy for people to know and can make a big difference just in the interim while we're trying to figure out the larger problem of can we help our immune systems adjust to this modern world that we're living in, that clearly our immune systems are not thrilled about.Debunking the germ theory47:20: We take it for granted that everything's bad—bacteria and viruses are bad. And it turns out that not really; some of those bacteria and some of those viruses are actually helpful, and we need them to function appropriately. On training our immune system28:38: Our immune systems need this training by age three. So, before around age three, our immune systems get set in their ways. And before that, they're pretty malleable, so they can be exposed to tiny amounts of things and learn to cope with it fairly well. But then, if you get massive changes after that, which is why you move from one coast to the other, through your immune system, because it was trained on the stuff that was around you when you were growing up. And then, if you transport yourself to a new area thousands of miles away, your body has to, in essence, decide about new things with a mature immune system that isn't as flexible. Can we develop an allergy later in life?30:347: The orthodoxy of immunology was that you couldn't develop an allergy later in life. And that has been turned on its head. So if you look at most of the modern research, there is an adult-onset food allergy. There just is. There are adult-onset, other types, and forms of allergy. And what you always had genetically was the predisposition.Show Links:Recommended Resources:AnaphylaxisHistamineFertile Crescent RegionVenomous AnimalsAlpha-gal AllergyAtopyAdult Onset AllergiesIGE AntibodyGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at Stevens Institute of TechnologySpeaker's Profile on Penguin Random House Speakers BureauTheresa MacPhail's WebsiteTheresa MacPhail on LinkedInTheresa MacPhail on TwitterHer Work:Allergic: Our Irritated Bodies in a Changing WorldThe Viral Network: A Pathography of the H1N1 Influenza PandemicThe Eye of the VirusGoogle Scholar PageArticles on NoemaArticles on The Guardian

There is no age limit to when a person can learn a new skill. It's never too late, and you're never too old. Trying something new, like painting or learning a new musical instrument, can expand your social circle and possibly unearth a talent you never knew you had. It can also build new neural pathways and hopefully spark curiosity and joy. MPR News guest host Chris Farrell and his guests explore the benefits of trying new things in the second half of life. Guests: Kate Schaefers is the director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Minnesota. She also serves on the AARP executive council in Minnesota. Schaefers holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Iowa State University. Andrea Leap is a voice instructor at MacPhail Center for Music and teaches in MacPhail Music for Life department, a music education and creative arts program for people ages 55 and older. Leap recently co-led the first musical theater camp for older adults offered on Madeleine Island through MacPhail. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of St. Thomas. Food allergies are a common and growing problem. To complicate things further, food allergy tests have a fifty percent false positive rate and most general practitioner doctors have just two weeks of allergy training - so you're often left on your own when trying to diagnose and deal with them. Extreme allergies are rare, but skin problems, digestive issues, headaches, and bowel issues are becoming increasingly common. My guest on this week's podcast will help you understand more about allergies and what to do about them. Listen and learn: Why allergies are a huge and growing problem Why most IGG food allergy tests are a waste of time How avoiding foods like peanuts could contribute to the development of an allergy The important difference between an intolerance and an allergy Links Theresa's Site ABOUT OUR GUEST Theresa MacPhail is a medical anthropologist, professor, and writer. The 128-year-old family-owned independent bottler stunned the whisky world this week with news that it will stop sourcing new make spirit from other distillers starting next year. Instead, Gordon & MacPhail will focus on single malts from its two distilleries, Benromach and The Cairn in the future. With decades of maturing whisky on hand, the change won't be felt for at least 12 to 15 years and Gordon & MacPhail will continue bottling older whiskies for decades to come. We'll discuss the change in philosophy with G&M managing director Ewen Mackintosh on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. On Behind the Label, we'll celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Excise Act of 1823, which directly led to today's Scotch Whisky industry, and we'll have tasting notes for whiskies from Bunnahabhain, Lost Lantern, and Dràm Mòr, too.
Pollen counts are rising and more of us are experiencing hay fever symptoms than ever before. From airborne allergens to the food on our plates or the chemicals and plants that touch our skin, around 40% of the global population has some form of allergic disease. By 2030, today's guest reveals, 50% of us will be affected.Professor Theresa MacPhail is a medical anthropologist and writer, who made it her life's work to understand more about allergy after her father died following a bee sting. Her book Allergic: How Our Immune System Reacts To A Changing World, is a detailed, enlightening look at the history of allergies and their growth in line with the industrial revolution. Why are allergies on the rise? Why is it that 200 years ago allergies barely existed, yet today they are in our pets and farm animals? We talk about what actually happens to cause the release of histamine - which is responsible for many of our allergic symptoms. Theresa also covers the main historical theories as to the cause of allergies from the ‘hygiene hypothesis' to the ‘farmhouse effect' and the ‘old friends theory'.What we do know is that allergies occur in the interaction between humans and our environment. Our environment has changed so much over the past 200 years and our immune systems simply cannot keep up. Theresa explains the body's three main barriers to infection and allergy – our skin, respiratory system and gut. When these barriers are damaged, they become more porous and can let unwanted molecules into our bodies – causing infection, inflammation, or allergy. And what's damaging them is things like air pollution, diesel fumes, chemicals, antibiotics, to name just a few.We cover the practical steps we can take to mitigate allergies but there are much wider societal issues that need addressing as well. Theresa explains that we are part of a bigger ecosystem - our bodies are continually making decisions on what they can tolerate and what they can't. We can try our best to build up our own barriers to tolerate more of the modern environment but the uncomfortable truth is that we collectively have a lot more to do to protect each other and the natural world. This is a deep dive into a very important topic. My hope is that anyone suffering from allergies will feel seen, and anyone lucky enough not to, will gain more empathy and understanding. I hope you enjoy listening.*Please note that this conversation refers to studies on mice.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Try on Apple Podcasts https://apple.co/feelbetterlivemore.
