November 16th, 1957 marked the first day of Wisconsin's deer hunting season. It was also the day Bernice Worden disappeared from her hardware store. When hardware store owner Bernice Worden disappeared from her store on the morning of November 16, 1957, sheriff's deputies traced the last sale made that morning to fifty-one-year-old recluse and occasional handyman Ed Gein. During a cursory search of the Gein property, investigators quickly located Worden's decapitated and mutilated body in a shed on Gein's property, but that was only one of the many horrors that awaited them on the farmstead. Inside the house, deputies found one of the most shocking and horrifying scenes ever documented in the history of American crime, revealing that the mild-mannered handyman locals had always believed harmless, was in fact a profoundly psychotic killer.Thank you to the magnificent Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1968. True Crime Podcast 2024 - REAL Police Interrogations, 911 Calls, True Police Stories and True Crime
Serial Killer Ed Gein (Butcher of Plainfield) Documentary Ed Gein, in full Edward Theodore Gein, also called the Butcher of Plainfield, (born August 27, 1906, Plainfield, Wisconsin, U.S.—died July 26, 1984, Madison, Wisconsin), American serial killer whose gruesome crimes gained worldwide notoriety and inspired numerous books and horror films. Gein endured a difficult childhood. His father was an alcoholic, and his mother was verbally abusive toward him. Gein nevertheless idolized her, a fact that apparently concerned his elder brother Henry, who occasionally confronted her in Gein's presence. In 1944 Henry died in mysterious circumstances during a fire near the family's farm in Plainfield. Although Gein reported his brother missing to the police, he was able to lead them directly to the burned body when they arrived. Despite bruises discovered on the victim's head, the death was ruled an accident. The death of Gein's mother in 1945 left him a virtual hermit. In subsequent years, Gein cordoned off the areas of the house that his mother had used most frequently, preserving them as something of a shrine. Gein attracted the attention of the police in 1957, when a hardware store owner named Bernice Worden went missing. Gein had been seen with her shortly before her disappearance, and, when law enforcement officials visited his farm, they found her body. She had been fatally shot and decapitated. Subsequent examinations of his home showed that he had systematically robbed graves and collected body parts, which he used to make household items, clothing, and masks. Also discovered on the property was the head of Mary Hogan, a tavern operator who had disappeared in 1954. In 1958 Gein's “house of horrors” was destroyed by fire, the origins of which remain unclear.
In the conclusion to our series on Ed Gein, we're getting into the graveyard antics that eventually resulted in full moon reveries while wearing the skin of dead women, the murder and mutilations of Mary Hogan and Bernice Worden, the horrors that police would find while they searched the Gein farmhouse including the nipple belt!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
It's the night of November 16, 1957. In the aftermath of Bernice Worden's murder, law enforcement enters the home of suspect Ed Gein to search the premises for evidence related to the local businesswoman's disappearance. What they discovered inside the reclusive bachelor's dilapidated farmhouse, however, was nearly unspeakable, a sight so terrifying and disturbing that it changed the landscape of American culture forever. Join host Ryan Kraus for the conclusion to the Ed Gein series as we tour the contents of his home in an effort to extract the psychological narrative lurking within his evil logic. On November 16, 1957 hardware store owner Bernice Worden went missing after an everyday interaction with a not-so-everyday man, named Ed Gein. Ed Gein had a fascination with his late mother due to the abuse he suffered as a child, and this fascination would lead him to taking the body parts of women who apparently looked like her, in order to fashion a flesh suit Gein could wear. To this extent he would go to the graves of women and exhume their parts, with, in his opinion, the "less-useful" parts becoming furniture in his house, such as bowls, chairs, soap containers, etc. What he would do to her, and Mary Hogan, another missing woman, were some of the most graphic and heinous acts known to man–that would later go on to inspire several famous horror movies.
It was strange for Bernice Worden to not be in her hardware store on a Saturday. And it was even stranger that she left without locking the door. Her son Frank, a deputy sheriff, stopped by the store around 5pm and searched for Bernice without any luck. Then he checked behind the counter and felt his stomach lurch. The cash register was open and there were dark pools of dried blood on the floor. Frank was worried but not panicked. He was a career cop and, despite the personal nature of the crime, he immediately took on the perspective of an investigator. He checked the receipt pad next to the register and saw that the last sale was from that morning: a gallon of antifreeze sold to a Mr. Ed Gein, a Plainfield local. Frank knew the Gein family in passing. #truecrime #crimehub Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ed Gein was linked to over ten missing persons cases, but was only convicted of killing two women: Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan. Bernice Worden was a fifty-eight year old hardware store owner, and Mary Hogan was a fifty-four year old tavern owner. The day before Gein murdered Worden, in 1957, he visited her shop and promised to return the next day to buy another item. The last receipt found before Bernice Worden disappeared was documenting a purchase made by an Edward Gein. When Frank Worden returned to his mother's hardware store, there was said to be a small pool of blood and a trail leading out of the store's back door. Frank then ordered a search of Gein's property for Gein had left a large trail of suspicion behind for the authorities to consider him as the murderer. Gein was the last to buy anything from the store, and had shown interest in Mrs. Worden previously; one source stated that he even asked her to go skating with him once. The officials went to Gein's home and eventually found the body of Bernice Worden hanging upside down by her heels. She had been gutted, like a deer, and decapitated (see picture above). She was so deformed that when an officer had brushed up against her body in the dark, he had thought it was a deer hanging by its legs. When the police found Bernice Worden's body on Gein's property, they also found her head and the head of Mary Hogan inside his house. Mary Hogan had been missing since 1954, and Gein admitted to shooting her during his interrogation. Unfortunately for Mary Hogan's family, Gein was not actually tried for her murder, only that of Bernice Worden. According to the judge of Gein's case, the reason for this was “prohibitive costs.” Ed Gein also had possession of many other women's body parts, some from digging up graves, and some from women who were declared missing. As said before, Gein was only tried for one murder, but it is not know if he killed more than two people. Some believe he killed his brother Henry, and because of the locks of hair belonging to missing women, some believe he killed numerous others as well.

Berince lived and worked in the nearby village of Plainfield. The investigation that followed lead authorities to an old farm on the outskirts of town. They were in search of a local man who had been the last reported customer Bernice served before the hardware store went mysteriously dark for the rest of the day. What the police would soon discover in that house however, would put sleepy Plainfield on the map, and change the face of horror movies forever. Edward T Gein, also known as The Butcher of Plainfield, was an American murderer. His crimes, committed around his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin, gathered widespread notoriety after authorities discovered that Gein had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones and skin. Gein confessed to killing two women – Mary Hogan in 1954, Bernice Worden in 1957. Gein was initially found unfit to stand trial and confined to a mental health facility. In 1968, Gein was found guilty but legally insane of the murder of Worden, and was remanded to psychiatric institutions. He died at Mendota Mental Health Institute of cancer-induced liver and respiratory failure at age 77 on July 26, 1984. He is buried next to his family in the Plainfield Cemetery, in a now unmarked grave. On the morning of November 16, 1957, Plainfield hardware store owner Bernice Worden disappeared. A Plainfield resident reported that the hardware store's truck had been driven out from the rear of the building around 9:30 am. The hardware store was closed the entire day; some area residents believed this was because of deer hunting season. Bernice Worden's son, Deputy Sheriff Frank Worden, entered the store around 5:00 pm to find the store's cash register open and blood stains on the floor. Frank Worden told investigators that Ed Gein had been in the store the evening before his mother's disappearance, and that he would return the next morning for a gallon of antifreeze. A sales slip for a gallon of antifreeze was the last receipt written by Worden on the morning she disappeared. On the evening of the same day, Gein was arrested at a West Plainfield grocery store, and the Waushara County Sheriff's Department searched the Gein farm. A Waushara County Sheriff's deputy discovered Worden's decapitated body in a shed on Gein's property, hung upside down by her legs with a crossbar at her ankles and ropes at her wrists. The torso was "dressed out like a deer". She had been shot with a .22-caliber rifle, and the mutilations were made after her death…. Ed Gein. Plainfield, Wisconsin. November, 1957. A man who did odd jobs was either pitied or teased by those who knew him. Behind the scenes, he had grown up in an abusive home. He would lose his entire family in a span of less than five years. It was the loss of his mother, though, that seemed to have a profound effect on Edward Theodore Gein. Unbeknownst to the others in the town, Ed was robbing graves of recently buried women at night from local cemeteries. In his quest to bring his mother back to life he would also resort to capturing and killing women who reminded him of his mom. In November of 1957, authorities would seek out Ed after the abduction and murder of a store owner named Bernice Worden. Her son was convinced that Ed was responsible. It wouldn't take long before Gein's nightmarish collections would be revealed. Who was Ed Gein and why did he do the things that he did?
In the last of our three parter on Ed Gein, we cover the murder and mutilation of Bernice Worden and explore Ed's house of horrors, from the infamous nipple belt to his human skull bedposts.
