The World Health Organization calls for menstrual health to be recognized, framed, and addressed as a health and human rights issue, and that all menstruators should be able “to live, study, and work in an environment in which menstruation is seen as positive and healthy and not something to be ashamed of and to be able to participate in work and social activities fully.” And FLOW echoes that call. Welcome to your weekly UAS news update, we have 4 stories for you this week: Remote ID enforcement begins, Bill to control airspace in Illinois Senate, St Louis Drone Bill update, and DJI Avata 2 Leaks. First up the FAA's deferred enforcement of remote ID ends this Saturday. This means that remote ID is now required to operate any drone that is registered or needs to be registered. If your drone doesn't have remote ID, you can equip it using a broadcast module or you can fly it at a FRIA. FRIA information is available in the UAS Facility maps or on Aloft Air aware. https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-extends-remote-id-enforcement-date-six-months Next up is an update on the St Louis drone bill that would regulate airspace… The bill has passed the city's legislature and is now on the Mayor's desk. Like we previously covered, this bill limits commercial operators and attempts to control airspace, including airspace around emergency vehicles, schools, publicly owned buildings, and events. If these laws are violated, a pilot faces fines and the confiscation of the drone. This is a perfect example of a municipality over reacting to a proposed drone operation. We'll keep you updated if this becomes law. https://www.stlouis-mo.gov/government/city-laws/upload/legislative/boardbills/committee-substitute-amended/BB199CSAA%20Combined%20Final%205.pdf Third this week is an Illinois bill that would also control the airspace. This bill would allocate the lowest 150' to of airspace to be controlled by municipalities, who could create their own rules around “public” airspace. If you're in IL, please reach out to Senators Julie Morrison and Linda Holmes to let them know this bill goes against the FAA's sole jurisdiction of the airspace. It's also interesting to note that this bill doesn't specifically attempt to restrict UAS, but instead would apply to all aircraft. Another one we'll keep you updated on! https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/BillStatus.asp?DocTypeID=SB&DocNum=2849&GAID=17&SessionID=112&LegID=151674 Ending on a better note, ther's leaks for the DJI Avata 2… Leaded pictures show the Avata 2, which appears to be a streamlined and a bit thinner version of the original Avata. With the leaked drone images come another set of DJI goggles with forward facing cameras, possibly to allow for an AR Experience. Leaked specs for the Avata suggest a 1/1.3” CMOS Sensor, 155 degree FOV, f/2.8, and 4K 60/100/120. Rumors say the drone will be about 480 grams and will fly for 27 minutes in normal/sport mode and 12-15 minutes in manual mode. We'll have to see what comes of these leaks! https://dronexl.co/2024/03/10/dji-avata-2-goggles-3-specifications/ Alright, that's it, have a great weekend and we'll see you next week on Monday for the live!
When Things need to get done, it's people like Ellen Daehnick who do them. Daehnick recently retired from her high-powered career to become a full-time “Unpaid Gender Crank”, focusing on legislation. She describes her first time testifying to the Colorado state legislature against CO House Bill 1071, which welcomes felons to change their legal names as long as they claim a trans identity. More of this remarkable hearing, described as “bananas” by audio editor Lisa Jones, can be found here. We discuss how to prepare for effective testimony, why female politicians support policies that harm women, selective empathy, toxic femininity, class, chiggers, and appeals to emotion vs facts. “Deadnaming,” “misgendering” and “mentioning the criminal record of an individual” may be verboten in the Colorado Statehouse, but the real genocide is the friends we made along the way. Having HIV is a crime in the United States. Currently, 35 states have laws that allow felony prosecution for exposure to HIV, even if the exposure doesn't result in the transmission of HIV. People of color make up 25% of the US population and over 50% of people diagnosed with HIV. This means that people of color are also the ones most impacted by laws criminalizing HIV. Unfortunately, most people know nothing about these laws. This results in confusion, increased discrimination and bias against those living with HIV. As we've often heard, knowledge is power. And today's episode is a start towards increasing awareness of this issue. This episode featuring Kim Hunt, Executive Director of the Pride Action Tank, is packed with information about the movement to decriminalize HIV and remove the stigma associated with this public health crisis. In addition, Kim Hunt explains:What it means to decriminalize laws related to HIV and AIDS. Passage of the Illinois law (House Bill 1063) decriminalizing HIV and AIDS.Ways criminalizing HIV undermines public health.Benefits of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). The problem with public health matters like HIV falling under the criminal law umbrella. Guests:Emin Gün Sirer (@el33th4xor) - debating FOR the motionEdmund Schuster (@Edmund_Schuster) - debating AGAINST the motionHost:Richard Yan (@gentso09)Today's motion concerns tokenization and smart contracts. Smart contracts' value proposition is to facilitate programmable transactions of tokens, in a manner that is decentralized, transparent, and cost-effective. A big part of the value, although not all of the value, in tokenization lies in the fact that disintermediated transactions of these tokens can take place via smart contracts. The only way to experience is the full debate is to listen to the episode in its entirety. Nevertheless for our busy listeners, here is a teaser that reflects part of the content:Gün argues that tokenization can put constraints on relationships to prevent errors and serve as a check on misbehavior. He cites examples that necessitate blockchain, such as the Dole company fiasco where actual number of shares outstanding exceeded the amount recorded. He agrees that tokenization on first-gen blockchain was flawed in divorcing digital assets from real world jurisdictions, but indicates that next-gen blockchain addresses this flaw by introducing a special set of nodes that hold the ledger, thereby allowing enforcement of jurisdictional legal requirements. Gün also discusses how blockchain combats rent-seeking, fosters automation and creates a trustless system unlike traditional client-server paradigms.Edmund contends that blockchain tech cannot encapsulate all the intricate details and complexity of real world, thereby necessitating some backdoor to address edge cases. Without it, a synchronization conflict arises between the state acknowledged by law and the state of the blockchain. He also indicate that lawyers can get creative in structuring arrangements to game a smart contract, rendering it useless. He thinks the next-gen blockchain with "privileged parties" that can rectify and reverse transactions looks similar to status quo, which is a trusted party with a database.Source of select items discussed in the debate:Dole Foods had 12 million more shares than the company thought existed: https://www.coindesk.com/dole-stock-crisis-reigniting-push-blockchainAva Labs: https://www.avalabs.org/"Cloud Crypto Land" paper by Edmund Schuster: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3476678Tokenization of NBA player's salary: https://www.coindesk.com/nba-players-contract-tokenization-plan-can-move-forward-reportsIllinois' smart contract bill: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/BillStatus.asp?DocNum=3575&GAID=15&DocTypeID=HB&LegId=120249&SessionID=108&GA=101Numerai (crowd-sourced hedge fund): https://numer.ai/
