In this episode, artist Charles Gaines and fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner explore how art can bridge the gap between what we perceive and what is real, prompting us to question our relationship with truth. Gaines's conceptual systems challenge the notion of a singular truth, while Bonner's fashion designs reveal the layers of identity and history embedded in her work. How do subjective interpretation and objective reality intersect, and where is the line between what we see and what is real? In this teaching Ben Patterson teaches us from the Parable of the Good Samaritan and invites us to examine what current attitude we have that limits breathing room to love our neighbor. In this series we want to acknowledge that we live busy lives. But busy isn't an excuse to put our spiritual health to the side. Jesus was one of the busiest people to ever live, but showed us how we can live with Breathing Room amidst the busy. He taught us how to have healthy rhythms in our lives. Join us as we explore how follow Jesus in a busy world. Percussion Arrangement, Ron Kuivila; Engineers, Jack Stang, Nicolas Collins; Producer, Alvin Lucier. Recorded January 21-24, 1982 at Nickel Recording, Hartford, CT. Reportedly, the first musical work in history to use brain waves to generate sound (whereas the sonification of brain waves has been around since the 1930s). Composed by Lucier during the winter of 1964-65 and first performed with the help of physicist Edmond Dewan on May 5, 1965. Lucier had the brilliant idea to let the amplified brain wave signals create music through sympathetically vibrating various percussion surfaces and objects through loudspeakers. For this recording, Nic Collins also created a number of voltage-driven solonoids to act as “electric drumsticks” to play various metal instruments and small drums, all controlled by the Alpha waves generated by the brain of the performer. Pierre Henry, “Levitation” from Mise En Musique Du Corticalart De Roger Lafosse (1971 Philips). Live improvisations recorded Feb. 15-21, 1971 by Pierre Henry from Roger Lafosse's Corticalart device, allowing to transcribe the electric cortex waves in electronic signals for further raw manipulations. The Human Voice Orphx, “Mother Tongue” from The Living Tissue (2001 Hands Productions). Rich Oddie and Christina Sealey, modular and analog synthesizers, software, location recordings and feedback circuits. Includes the modified sounds of the human body and voice. Ben Patterson, “A Fluxus Elegy” (excerpt) from A Fluxus Elegy (2006 Alga Marghen). Limited edition of 345 copies. Patterson, a double bass player, was an original member of the Fluxus movement of the 1960s. This elegy to Fluxus artists consists of the initials of the names of key Fluxus artists, encoded into basic Morse code and then performed using a Yamaha DJX keyboard (voice pattern setting) connected to a Digitech JamMan Looper (over-dub setting) connected to a Eurorack MX 602 mixer. The Breath, Lungs Johan Timman, “The Windpipe” and “The Lungs” from Trip Into the Body (1981 Fleet). Composed, performed, recorded, and mixed by Johan Timman. Timman had a massive private studio consisting of Moog synthesizers, some privately made, plus other electronic music instruments. Brands represented include Moog, Oberheim, Roland, EMS, and Synton (vocoder). His was an elaborate analog studio on the eve of the digital revolution. Roger Waters and Ron Geesin, “Body Transport” from Music From the Body (1970 Harvest). Roger Waters and Ron Geesin, guitars, body sounds, field recordings, tape composition. Geesin was a composer and tape music technician who worked with Pink Floyd on 1970's Atom Heart Mother. He collaborated with Waters on this set of songs inspired by the human body, the most tuneful of which were used in a 30-minute television production. The rest of the material not used for the TV production included this piece for clapping, vocal and other sounds. Endoscopy Teresa Rampazzi, “Musica Endoscopica” (1972/2008 Die Schachtel) in entirety. Teresa Rampazzi was an Italian pianist and composer of electronic music. After meeting John Cage in 1958 she devoted herself to developing electronic music. In 1965 she founded the Gruppo NPS (Nuove Proposte Sonore) in Padua which also experimented with computer music. This is a soundtrack made in 1972 for a documentary film called Gastroscopia. Rampazzi wove the actual sound of “gloomy sound blocks and textures of convulsive rhythms” into electronic works for each stage of the digestive system. The sequence is named after sections of the digestive tract: Fibre Ottiche, Laringe, Stomaco, Esofago, Stomaco, Esofago, Stomaco, Stomaco Più Esofago, Stomaco Operato, Duodeno Normale, Duodeno Patologico, and Papille Di F. E Altro (optical fibres). The Archive Mix—where two tracks are played at the same time to see what happens. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Nasal Retentive Caliope Music (1968 Verve). Johan Timman, “Heart” from Trip Into the Body (1981 Fleet). Composed, performed, recorded, and mixed by Johan Timman. Other Notes Opening track: Roger Waters and Ron Geesin, “Our Song” (excerpt) from Music From the Body (1970 Harvest). Roger Waters and Ron Geesin, guitars, body sounds, field recordings, tape composition. Also heard from time to time, excerpts from Auscultation Of The Heart (1966 London) by J. B. Barlow* & W. A. Pocock, narration by Stephen O'Reilly. A medical reference recording with discussion and examples of various heartbeats and pathologies. “Provided as a service to medical students as a part of the Medical School Program of Warner-Chilcott Laboratories.” I encourage you to pick up a copy of Alvin Lucier's Music 109: Notes on Experimental Music. This is the most digestible and thoughtful book about the avant garde since Cage's Silence and it is grounded by Lucier's real-world experience teaching and mentoring musicians for his many years at Wesleyan. Opening and closing sequences were voiced by Anne Benkovitz.
In this throwback episode, Lauretta shares about hearing the gospel through the language of music: equilibrium, tension, resolution. Her life has been an adventure in hope and prayer as she found her husband, moved around the country, and faced the diagnoses of her children. She reminds us that prayer does something BIG. This week we wrap-up the 2020 Regular Session looking at the final days, Brewster's Millions, special elections, and football with Corona.
A weekly wrap-up of the activity from the Alabama Legislative Session.
Hello friends, and happy Lord's Day to you all! Some of us have the privilege of worshipping together in person today, and some - like us - are still in quarantine. Wherever you fall along that spectrum, I pray that the Lord would bless you and keep you safe - that He would preserve your life and give you a wonderful gathering today. I am excited about our own church gathering, even though it is livestream. At our church - Valley Baptist Church in Salinas - we have had some wonderful times 'meeting' together over the internet - primarily because so many church members have been able to participate. We have great times of interactive prayer and so many encouraging testimonies and words have been sent in - we've even had multiple worship leaders lead us via video. It's not as great as being together in person, but I still look forward to our gathering every week. We'd love to have you join us at 11am Pacific on Facebook live - just go to VBC Salinas on Facebook, like our page, and you will be alerted when we go live...or just check out the recording. Today, Robert Murray M'Cheyne - the original author of the Bible reading plan we are following this year - decided to get a little bit creative. Creative, or crazy...I'm not sure. Our readings are Numbers 19, Psalms 56-57, Isaiah 8 and 9:1-7, and James 2. Tomorrow the readings are even more, uhm, interesting. Do remember that the next few episodes might be a little shorter than normal, as I am preparing for a brief road trip this week and recording some episodes ahead of time. Yesterday was a fake shorter episode that ended up being average - this episode will likely be shorter. That said - NEVER, EVER trust a preacher's estimate of time, and mine in particular. I'm not very good at estimating how long something will last. I have found that the Psalms have been particularly comforting to me as we have gone through this pandemic/quarantine time. I don't live and fight daily battles with anxiety and fear, but these past eight weeks have definitely increased the levels of those horrible things in my life, and maybe yours too. As things have progressed, I have found great comfort and assurance in reading through the Psalms and praying through them. I learned from Ben Patterson, via Kevin DeYoung, an excellent way to pray through the Psalms that I'd like to share with us now: Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference. For many years I’ve used the 3 R’s I learned from Ben Patterson to pray through Scripture. This simple tool has helped me pray the Bible more than any other single strategy. I’ve used in my devotional times and have employed it often in leading others in prayer. 1. Rejoice 2. Repent 3. Request With every verse in the Bible we can do one (or more likely, all three) of these things. We can rejoice and thank God for his character and blessings. We can repent of our mistakes and sins. We can request new mercies and help. Source: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/kevin-deyoung/how-to-pray-using-scripture/ Let's take that and apply it to Psalms 57: Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, for I take refuge in you. I will seek refuge in the shadow of your wings until danger passes. 2 I call to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. 3 He reaches down from heaven and saves me, challenging the one who tramples me.Selah God sends his faithful love and truth. 4 I am surrounded by lions; I lie down among devouring lions— people whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. 5 God, be exalted above the heavens; let your glory be over the whole earth. 6 They prepared a net for my steps; I was despondent. They dug a pit ahead of me, but they fell into it!Selah7 My heart is confident, God, my heart is confident. I will sing; I will sing praises. 8 Wake up, my soul! Wake up, harp and lyre! I will wake up the dawn. 9 I will praise you, Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. 10 For your faithful love is as high as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches the clouds. 11 God, be exalted above the heavens; let your glory be over the whole earth. Psalms 57: 1-11

Join us with Murray Roberson and take a tour of the 3 ravens brewery then Ben Patterson shares some of his founding original vision for 3 ravens and Dee Wild takes us on a tour of the coworking space in this unique and ever intriguing tour. Engineered by hand, 3 Ravens beers are the product of a craft brewing process in which traditional methods meet exacting standards. We take care to emphasise quality over quantity and use only the finest natural ingredients. Our Beer now undergoes a gentle filtration to remove fermenter yeast. The age old process of bottle conditioning is then started with a small amount of fresh live brewers yeast. This creates a clearer, brighter beer unmasking and enhancing the flavour, aroma and body of our premium natural ingredients. Cheers!
