Jon Jordan and BlockchainGamer.biz editor Jenny Jordan talk through the week's news including:[0:28] Following Nyan Heroes, Blast Royale and Tatsumeeko, Ember Sword has shut down.[2:15] The background is a lot of web3 game devs raised their funding back in 2021-22.[4:12] $5 million isn't much money to make a good game, either web2 or web3. [5:07] And most teams raising money were inexperienced. They had never made a game before.[6:15] A team of 10 game devs probably costs around $1 million a year.[6:58] Ambitious games like Nyan Heroes and Ember Sword probably required +50 devs.[7:35] Hence $5-10 million of funding doesn't last very long. It's not a rug or a con.[9:30] If your game's retention isn't good enough, you can never scale or monetize it to success.[11:44] It's very hard to get anyone to play a new game because of Fortnite/Roblox.[15:23] As weaker projects shut down, the top blockchain games become clear.[15:54] Examples? EVE Frontier (thanks for the hat!), [16:51] Also Wildcard, Proof of Play, Mythical Games, Faraway, MapleStory N etc.[22:04] Blast Royale is being open-sourced so the community could continue to develop it.[24:00] Voya Games has bucked the trend, raising $5 million for idle gaming ecosystem Craft World.[26:50] CEO Oli Loeffler has been slowly building the game and company for the past 3 years. [28:10] The game combines individual resource management with collaborative events. [30:56] There's always something to do and blockchain adds a longer term retention layer.[31:34] Your resources in the main game are only valuable if you can get them into the collab events.[33:45] Would Craft World be a good match for Ronin?[35:05] Off The Grid will launch a web2 version on Steam in June.[37:38] The first NFT sales from Off The Grid have started - highest price to-date is over $1,000.[39:30] But some Steam users hate blockchain so the game will likely get review bombed.[41:30] Jon went to the Avalanche Summit London and was impressed with its momentum.[42:34] He also spoke to Nexon's Dominic Jang about MapleStory Universe and MapleStory N's launch.[43:00] The MSU marketplace has done $1.6 million-worth of NFT trading volume.[45:23] Main markets to-date for MapleStory N players are LATAM, Brazil, southeast Asia.[46:25] Success for Nexon isn't about the game, it's about the ecosystem, esp. 3rd party apps.[51:05] Ava Labs' CEO Emin Gün Sirer also spoke well about the overall vision for Avalanche.

Longtime friend of Epicenter, Ava Labs' founder and CEO shared his unique insights on the industry, from both a founder, as well as a former academia perspective.Given Avalanche's consensus & architecture, it boasts high TPS and scalability properties, incentivising founders to build better products in the AVAX ecosystem. One of the most controversial narratives is that of LLMs (i.e. ChatGPT) powering smart contract development by bypassing programming languages and even bytecode altogether. The question arises if replacing the human third-party with an AI fixes trust issues or not, but only time will tell which piece of code we can actually consider 'law'.Topics covered in this episode:Emin's background, from academia to running a multi-billion dollar companyMain takeaways from the 2nd Avalanche summitInnovation narratives in the Avalanche ecosystem. This is a Flashback Episode, is going back to Sept  2018 in which Emin Gün Sirer makes his first of appearances on  Hashing it Out part of The Bitcoin Podcast Network. Revolutionary! On this episode we have the brilliant Dr. Gün Sirer to whet our appetites for Avalanche, a new category of consensus protocol. He distinguishes Avalanche from Paxos/RAFT systems, blockchain, and traditional gossip networks to show how this new algorithm prevents double spends while allowing for high throughput (early tests supporting over 1200 tx/s). We learn about his new coin, Ava, which will test the limits of Avalanche's public consensus on a global scale! The future is exciting! Social Media Of Emin Gun SirerWebsite: https://hackingdistributed.com//Twitter: https://twitter.com/el33th4xorSocial Media of AVALABSWebsite: https://www.avalabs.org/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/avalabsofficial/Twitter: https://twitter.com/avalabsofficialThe Bitcoin Podcast Social MediaJoin-Slack: https://launchpass.com/thebitcoinpodcastPatreon:https://www.patreon.com/TheBitcoinPodcastNetworkWebsite: http://thebitcoinpodcast.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/thebtcpodcastDADDAO: https://daddao.org/

This is a Flashback Episode, we are going back to June 2016 in which Emin Gün Sirer makes his second of seven appearances on The Bitcoin Podcast Network. Emin Gün Sirer is a great mind and future thinker for CryptoCurrency, smart contracts and DAOs. I'm also supporting his stance to start working on DAO2.0 in an organized manner. The statements from the Cornell computer scientist, a longstanding critic of the project, on this episode come amid broad concern over developments at The DAO, a smart contract-based funding vehicle built with ethereum that has effectively collapsed following an exploit of a vulnerability within its smart contract code. I think we've all been relieved to see the debate take on a more civil tone over the last day or two. In the interest of that spirit of respectful disagreement and helping us all to arrive at a considered consensus, Valerian Bennett, creator of PopChest and pioneer of microtransactions, joined us on the roundtable. This is it folks, we put the final nail in the coffin on the Dao talk.

We close out Season 8 with the most ambitious organization we've ever covered on Acquired: Ethereum, and it's celebrity wunderkind founder Vitalik Buterin. If you thought Mark Zuckerberg IPO-ing Facebook at $100B by age 27 was something, just wait until you hear the story of this high school junior creating $500B (!!) of market cap by the same age — and oh yeah, maybe seeding the future dethroning of Facebook, Google, Amazon and all of big tech in the process. Regardless whether you're a crypto neophyte, a die-hard bull, or a skeptical bear, this is a story you need to hear, and Ethereum is an innovation you need to understand. Buckle in for a wild ride... and some special surprises from a few Acquired friends. :) If you love Acquired and want more, join our LP Community for access to over 50 LP-only episodes, monthly Zoom calls, and live access for big events like emergency pods and book club discussions with authors. [00:42:29] Use Cases of AVAX tokenQuotes from the episode:“Whereas Bitcoin is trying to be digital gold or a replacement for the Euro, the replacement for Dollars and so on, and whereas Ethereum is an internet computer, what we're building is very different. It's a platform for other people to create digital assets.” [00:04:18]“We're three times faster than Visa. And if anybody else can, believe that they can compete with Visa, they should come up and line up and we should do a side-by-side comparison. There is no other coin that can say this” [00:08:10]“We're going through a set of improvements to Avalanche called Apricot, and we're about halfway done with it. When Apricot is done, we're going to have a fee structure for Avalanche that is much more dynamic. Guests:Emin Gün Sirer (@el33th4xor) - debating FOR the motionEdmund Schuster (@Edmund_Schuster) - debating AGAINST the motionHost:Richard Yan (@gentso09)Today's motion concerns tokenization and smart contracts. Smart contracts' value proposition is to facilitate programmable transactions of tokens, in a manner that is decentralized, transparent, and cost-effective. A big part of the value, although not all of the value, in tokenization lies in the fact that disintermediated transactions of these tokens can take place via smart contracts. The only way to experience is the full debate is to listen to the episode in its entirety. Nevertheless for our busy listeners, here is a teaser that reflects part of the content:Gün argues that tokenization can put constraints on relationships to prevent errors and serve as a check on misbehavior. He cites examples that necessitate blockchain, such as the Dole company fiasco where actual number of shares outstanding exceeded the amount recorded. He agrees that tokenization on first-gen blockchain was flawed in divorcing digital assets from real world jurisdictions, but indicates that next-gen blockchain addresses this flaw by introducing a special set of nodes that hold the ledger, thereby allowing enforcement of jurisdictional legal requirements. Gün also discusses how blockchain combats rent-seeking, fosters automation and creates a trustless system unlike traditional client-server paradigms.Edmund contends that blockchain tech cannot encapsulate all the intricate details and complexity of real world, thereby necessitating some backdoor to address edge cases. Without it, a synchronization conflict arises between the state acknowledged by law and the state of the blockchain. He also indicate that lawyers can get creative in structuring arrangements to game a smart contract, rendering it useless. He thinks the next-gen blockchain with "privileged parties" that can rectify and reverse transactions looks similar to status quo, which is a trusted party with a database.Source of select items discussed in the debate:Dole Foods had 12 million more shares than the company thought existed: https://www.coindesk.com/dole-stock-crisis-reigniting-push-blockchainAva Labs: https://www.avalabs.org/"Cloud Crypto Land" paper by Edmund Schuster: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3476678Tokenization of NBA player's salary: https://www.coindesk.com/nba-players-contract-tokenization-plan-can-move-forward-reportsIllinois' smart contract bill: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/BillStatus.asp?DocNum=3575&GAID=15&DocTypeID=HB&LegId=120249&SessionID=108&GA=101Numerai (crowd-sourced hedge fund): https://numer.ai/

With an increasing number of enterprises looking to blockchain for business applications, the very nature of decentralization is being called into question. The recent Senate hearings on Facebook's Libra highlight that any project whose value can be distorted by a central authority, as is the case with Libra's consortium of just 27 nodes, cannot be classified as truly decentralized. While some projects reject decentralization in favor of business benefits, others remain focused on delivering on the original promise of blockchain technology. Co-founded by preeminent blockchain authority and Cornell professor Emin Gün Sirer, and seasoned software engineer Kevin Sekniqi, AVA Labs is one such project that is focused on developing a "platform of platforms" for blockchain applications, with the bold goal of challenging established players such as Ethereum. AVA's Avalanche protocol facilitates high throughput and scalability and, in combination with the network's unprecedented flexibility - allowing nodes across the system to utilize different scripting languages - AVA opens up a whole new level of decentralization for Proof-of-Stake protocols, bringing them in line with the level of decentralization offered by Bitcoin. Kevin Sekniqi, Co-Founder & Chief Protocol Architect at AVA Labs joins me on the Tech Talks Daily Podcast, shares his mission to build a payments rail and computation engine based on the breakthrough Avalanche family of consensus protocols. Before this, Kevin was a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at Cornell University, researching distributed systems, cryptography, security, and economics. He previously did research and software engineering at many prominent organizations, including Microsoft and NASA. Kevin also previously co-founded an AI company focused on hyper-parameter optimization.

Uri Klarman, CEO and Cofounder at bloXroute Labs On episode 65 of LAB Radio, your host, Chris Groshong chats with Network Researcher and Ph.D. Uri Zubair. As CEO and cofounder of bloXroute Labs. After graduating from Northwestern University he and his inital cofounder Aleks Kuzmanovic knew that they could solve the relay issue that ultimately keep blockchain systems from scaling. As they progressed down this journey, they added two additional cofounders, Emin Gün Sirer, professor at Cornell and his PhD student Soumya Basu, the creator of the Falcon Network. Falcon can be thought of as a relay network for bitcoin to help pass along the block data faster. In 2017 it was their heads down approach that brought them to discover the real world solution for scaling blockchain networks. “This is a networking problem,” says Uri. Scaling of blockchains has been discussed since Satoshi’s whitepaper, but no one has solved it. At least until now. How can we be so sure that bloXroute Labs can provide this solution?   Uri explains: Propogation of blocks across against the network. The relationship between block size and block time at scale. How a blockchain can fork itself into infinity. What is a Blockchain Distribution Network(BDN)? How a relay network works and why its a vulnerability. How to prove that bloXroute is unable to discriminate against and protect against manipulation. (~27 min) “We are a faster internet for blockchains.” – Uri Klarman How bloXroute is blockchain agnostic. How bloXroute creates an incredible Win-Win-Win scenario. Miners will get 100X more transaction fees and Users will pay half as much. (~34-36 min) The more user and miners that use the network the bigger reward for all. How does bloXroute monetize?(~39 min) In the coming months the platform is going live and being incorporated to a few real world and well known projects. In our second interview with Emin Gün Sirer (the first one being lost to a catastrophic file system failure!), we discuss the current state of cryptocurrency, and just what Emin means when he says that Satoshi Nakamoto is ‘dead.’ We discover the secret shared lineage between BitTorrent and Cryptocurrency, and how they both tackle the ‘chaos of the commons’. Of course TRON’s recent acquisition of BitTorrent, Inc. comes in for some scrutiny — Emin remains, let’s say, skeptical. And, finally, we look at Emin’s work on and around the all-new Avalanche protocol, which he sees as the most significant contribution to cryptocurrency since Bitcoin itself.  Emin Gün Sirer is a co-director of The Initiative For Cryptocurrencies & Contracts (http://www.initc3.org/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss)  and associate professor of computer science at Cornell University. Known for significant contributions to peer-to-peer systems and computer networking, Emin was behind the first Proof-of-Work system for cryptocurrency, Karma, which debuted before Bitcoin. Having since become a respected commentator on and contributor to Bitcoin itself, Emin is now working on Avalanche, a new cryptocurrency protocol based on an entirely new model, promising fast, reliable transactions with significantly lower power overheads. Until now, proposals to improve blockchain scalability have addressed the problem in one of two ways. One seeks to increase efficiency by optimizing the blockchain or improving the consensus algorithm. The other comes in the forms of layer-2 solutions such as payment channels or side chains. However, none have addressed the core bottleneck to scalability: TCP/IP network limitations. Improving the speed at which blocks propagate through the network is the layer-0 problem few people consider when thinking about scaling. Fundamentally, network bottlenecks are what prevent blockchains from increasing their transaction throughput. Raising the block size or reducing the time between blocks has devastating effects on usability as the probability of a fork increases. At a certain point, the blockchain simply breaks as forks occur faster than blocks can propagate to all validators. Remarkably, the web figured out how to scale decades ago with the invention of Content Distributions Networks, or CDN. This is what enables platforms like YouTube to steam thousands of hours of video to hundreds of thousands of people every second. However, traditional centralized scaling solutions lack the privacy and censorship resistance necessary to serve the decentralized web. We’re joined by Uri Klarman, CEO of bloXroute. Founded by a team of researchers and systems designers from Northwestern and Cornel University, including Emin Gün Sirer, bloXroute allows practically every blockchain network to “scale today.” As a scalability infrastructure service, their Blockchain Distribution Network, or BDN, sits underneath blockchain networks. Anyone operating a miner can use the BDN without any changes to their consensus algorithm or protocol. By simply pointing their software to a bloXroute node, miners immediately benefit from propagation speeds orders of magnitude higher than the time which is currently required for blocks to be seen by all validators. This global network of servers is optimized to receive and stream massive amounts of transaction data to vast networks of nodes and miners. While bloXroute relies on some level of centralization, it is provably neutral and cannot discriminate based on the contents, provenance or destination of a block. It also includes clever redundancy mechanisms which ensure availability in the event of an attack on the network. Topics covered in this episode: Uri’s journey as an academic working in the field of networking Defining the blockchain scalability problem as a networking problem Past work and attempts to scale blockchains The vision behind bloXroute and the problem it aims to solve The Blockchain Distribution Network (BDN) and its technical architecture How the BDN optimizes blocks and achieves 1,000x faster propagation times How bloXroute archives provable neutrality and ensures network resiliency The BLXR token and incentive mechanisms The project’s goals, milestones, and product roadmap Episode links: bloXroute Website bloXroute White Paper This episode is hosted by Meher Roy and Sébastien Couture. During that time, I recorded a number of interviews that weren't quite publishable, for one reason or another. But after attending a Bitcoin Job Fair, I eventually collected enough solid content to release my first episode of The Bitcoin Game on October 15, 2014. A bit under 20 episodes per year isn't so bad, is it? Regular listeners are aware that my releases have been less frequent in 2016. So I felt extra pressure to do something special for my year-end, 40th episode. I sent messages to over 100 cryptocurrency enthusiasts, inviting them to record a holiday or new year greeting. I made suggestions, such as reviewing 2016 or making predictions for 2017, but I tried to make it open-ended. I ended up with submissions from 26 people who in some cases represent very divergent viewpoints. It's a jam packed, ad-free show; I hope you enjoy! Oh, before I forget… I want to propose that on January 3rd, the 8th anniversary of Bitcoin's genesis block, every cryptocurrency aficionado take a day to chill on the arguing, so we get a sense of what it's like to be a huge, cohesive group. Can you go so far as to find someone you typically take issue with, and compliment them on something you genuinely value about that person? I'm just asking for one day a year. Who's with me? Emin Gün Sirer is a great mind and future thinker for CryptoCurrency, smart contracts and DAOs. I'm also supporting his stance to start working on DAO 2.0 in an organized manner. The statements from the Cornell computer scientist on this episode come amid broad concern over developments at The DAO. In the interest of helping us all to arrive at a considered consensus, Valerian Bennett, creator of Popchest and pioneer of microtransactions, join us on the roundtable. This is it folks, we put the final nail in the coffin on the Dao talk. It's a good one!

Raising $150m+ through its toke sale, ‘The DAO’ has become the most notable decentralized application to date. The ambitious goal of the project is to form an decentralized organizations that efficiently makes investment decisions and generates a return for the token holders. Computer Science professor Emin Gün Sirer and researcher Vlad Zamfir joined us to discuss the various security issues with the daring project and why they’ve called for a temporary moratorium on funding proposals. Topics covered in this episode: How the DAO works What the role of the curators is What splits are and how they became a way to withdraw funds Why the DAO has a bias towards approving proposals How attackers could ‘stalk’ token holders when withdrawing their funds How the DAO can be upgraded Episode links: A Call for a Temporary Moratorium on The DAO Blog Post A Call for a Temporary Moratorium on The DAO Full Paper PDF EB132 – Stephan Tual: Building A Universal Sharing Network On Ethereum And A $150M DAO Understanding the DAO Accounting The DAO website Meher's 'split DAO' reward token attack This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Meher Roy. One of the concerns confronting the Bitcoin community is that of scaling the transaction throughput rate: How do we go from the current rate of approx. 5 transactions per second to a thousand times that? In this episode, we talk to Emin Gun Sirer and Ittay Eyal from Cornell University regarding Bitcoin NG; a next generation Bitcoin blockchain design that addresses some protocol based limitations preventing Bitcoin from increasing transaction throughput. Their proposal also enables fast (initial) transaction confirmations on the order of 10-20 seconds. Topics covered in this episode: Metrics to measure the security and fairness properties of Nakamoto consensus as implemented in Bitcoin. A network emulation of Bitcoin designed by their team to study properties of Bitcoin network. Technical design of Bitcoin NG Concerns with Bitcoin NG Impact of Bitcoin NG on various stakeholders if it is adopted in the main Bitcoin network. Bitcoin’s approach to solving the double spending problem is to make a collusion and attack on the network prohibitively expensive. One of the main factors that will determine Bitcoin’s chance of survival in the long-term is whether the behavior that maximizes the profits of miners contributes to or sabotages the health of the network. The game theory that determines this is complex and our understanding of it still incomplete. But research is increasing and two people who have been at the forefront of this work are , a professor in computer science at Cornell University, and Ittay Eyal, a post-doc at the same department. They joined us for a fascinating discussion of their work on ‘selfish mining’, the incetive structure that underlies Bitcoin and their recent positive conclusions from the Miner’s Dilemma. Topics covered in this episode: Emin Gün Sirer’s early interest in cryptocurrencies and work on a cryptocurrency to incentivize bittorrent users in 2004 What selfish mining is and how miners could profit from withholding blocks How an attacker would execute a selfish mining attack Why the miner’s dilemma implies that the equilibrium might be small mining pools Why the lack of security of clients and servers is holding back adoption Episode links: Selfish Mining paper (PDF) Miner's Dilemma blog post Miner's Dilemma paper (PDF) Hacking, Distributed Meni Rosenfeld's paper on mining pool reward systems (PDF) This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Sébastien Couture.
