#1557: Apple Immersive Video Behind-the-Scenes & Overcoming Fears with “Adventure” Series Athlete

Voices of VR Podcast – Designing for Virtual Reality

Ant Williams is a freediving athlete featured in the third episode of The Adventure Series titled "Ice Dive" that's co-produced by Apple and Atlantic Studios (formerly Atlantic Productions). In the episode, Williams attempts to swim a world record distance 182 meters under ice, and I wanted to get some additional behind-the-scenes context on his experience as well as what it was like to have the most intense month of his life condensed down into a 15-minute Apple Immersive Video. Williams is a sports psychologist who wanted to put his theories into practice by taking what he calls "positive, calculated risk-taking challenges" that allow him to deal with overwhelming anxiety, and overcome his fears, uncertainty, and self-doubt. I also wanted to get some additional context on the production of the episode as Apple has otherwise been pretty tight-lipped about the series, launched with which launched with "Highlining" on the same day as the Apple Vision Pro launch on February 2, 2024. Apple Immersive Video is a different format than spatial video. Apple says "spatial videos are captured in 1080p at 30 frames per second in standard dynamic range," and these are what can be captured by either an iPhone or Apple Vision Pro, and they are displayed in a windowed frame where you see the stereoscopic effects. Apple describes Apple Immersive Video as "a remarkable storytelling format that leverages 3D video recorded in 8K with a 180-degree field of view and Spatial Audio to transport viewers to the center of the action." Apple Immersive Video is much closer to what we've seen from the XR industry and VR 180 filmmakers from the past decade, and Apple's technology is likely derived from their 2020 acquisition of NextVR. NextVR focused on live stereoscopic broadcasts of sports events on VR headsets starting with the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift in 2014. A lot of the technical specifications of the Apple Immersive Video format have not been officially confirmed by Apple, but there are a couple of breadcrumbs that give us some more details. Thanks to iFixIt's breakdown of the Apple Vision Pro on February 7, 2024, then we know the microOLED display size is reported as "the lit area totals 3660 px by 3200 px." 360 Labs' Mike Rowell wrote a post on March 19, 2024 saying, "Apple Vision Pro's screens are a whopping 3660 x 3200 pixels per eye. Although they haven't made any official claims as to the FOV of the headset, 3rd party developers claim that it looks to be around 100° horizontal. With each screen having 3,660 horizontal pixels, this would mean that a 180° immersive experience would need about 6,000 x 6,000 pixels per eye to saturate the display. Apple's own immersive experiences have been reported at being 4320x4320 per eye at 90fps and in HDR10." The reporting of Apple's immersive experiences was detailed by Mike Swanson, who announced a spatial video tool on March 7, 2024 that leverages the Apple's AVFoundation to properly encode video into the "multiview extensions of the HEVC codec, known as MV-HEVC" format. Swanson says in his post, "I receive multiple messages and files every day from people who are trying to find the limits of what the Apple Vision Pro is capable of playing. You can start with the 4320×4320 per-eye 90fps content that Apple is producing and go up from there. I've personally played up to “12K” (11520×5760) per eye 360-degree stereo video at 30fps." Another clue can be found in the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera that was announced on June 10, 2024, which says, "The sensor delivers 8160 x 7200 resolution per eye with pixel level synchronization and an incredible 16 stops of dynamic range, so cinematographers can shoot 90fps stereoscopic 3D immersive cinema content to a single file." Incidentally, Currents director Jake Oleson told me that he used Swanson's tool to create his immersive film after shooting it in 8k on the Canon EOS R5 Camera Body with Canon's Dual Fisheye lens.

EYE ON NPI - Teledyne FLIR Lepton® 3.1R Pocket-Sized Thermal Camera

This week's EYE ON NPI knows where New York Hottest Club is at, it's the Teledyne FLIR Lepton® 3.1R Pocket-Sized Thermal Camera (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/teledyne-flir/pocket-sized-thermal-camera), a bite-sized full-featured video camera for remote thermal measurements. With a resolution of 160x120 pixels, remote temperature measurements of -40°C to +300°C, and the size of a coin, this camera can be embedded into any kind of product, whether it's running Linux, RTOS or a plain old microcontroller. Thermal cameras are multi-purpose, with usage in medical, industrial, construction, maintenance and security industries. Use them to make sure equipment is running at the right temperature and not overheating, that insulation for a room is performing adequately, locating people or animals, or detecting fevers without touching. FLIR makes the best low-cost, small-size thermal cameras and they're available off-the-shelf at DigiKey for quick integration. Each camera outputs either a simple grayscale-valued frame or one with a false-color RGB888 palette - the palette can be configured over I2C. The Lepton 3.1R is one of a series of cameras available from FLIR, including the Lepton 2 and 3.5. What's great is all have the same physical pinout and shape that can plug into a socket. This is great for manufacturing yield and field repair: the expensive module is placed last in the manufacturing line so earlier yield issues don't affect it. Also you can swap different resolution/FOV modules to customize for the end-user. For example, the Lepton 2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/flir-lepton/500-0763-01/6250105) is a little less expensive but has only 80x60 pixels. Or you can upgrade to the Lepton 3.5 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/flir-lepton/500-0771-01/7606616) with similar resolution but a narrower FOV. Note that the FOV will affect the distortion greatly: a wider FOV requires a lens to focus the IR emissions but will fisheye the middle and compress the edges. There's software from Teledyne FLIR (https://www.flir.com/developer/lepton-integration/lepton-3.1r-dewarping-application-note/) that will "de-warp" the 3.1R's output, using Open CV, to give you more realistic imagery. To learn how to work with these modules, we recommend the Lepton engineering integration guide (https://flir.netx.net/file/asset/13333/original/attachment). Unlike the simplest thermal camera modules and sensors, which use only I2C, or the most complex USB-video output devices, the Leptons use a combination on I2C for configuration - called the CCI Command and Control Interface - and SPI for VoSPI - a.k.a. video over SPI. This makes them possible to integrate with a wide range of microcontrollers or microcomputers. As mentioned before, you don't solder the cameras to the PCB. Instead they are plugged into a common Molex 1050281001 socket (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/molex/1050281001/3045223) which is only $1 at DigiKey and comes on a pick-and-place reel. If you want to get started very quickly, DigiKey and GroupGets (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/groupgets) have partnered up to offer a wide range of breakout boards, USB adapters and dev-boards that feature the Teledyne FLIR Leptons (https://www.digikey.com/short/2djrnzpr) GroupGets also published firmware and example code (https://github.com/orgs/groupgets/repositories?type=all) to get you started with their products so you can quickly evaluate the Lepton and make sure it will work and what resolution/FOV is ideal: simply swap the different models in and out of the Molex socket. GroupGets also works with makers to get their prototypes to market, working with DigiKey for part sourcing (https://www.digikey.com/en/blog/digikey-partners-with-groupgets-to-help-startups-getmade) so if you have an idea and need a help making it to production check them out! If you need a high-quality thermal camera that is plug-and-play, easy to integrate and at a great cost, the Teledyne FLIR Lepton 3.1R Pocket-Sized Thermal Camera is hot hot HOT and in stock right now for immediate purchase from DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/short/0zr8w59q). Order today, pick up an eval board too, and you can be measuring the world around you by tomorrow afternoon. The top AI news from the past week, every ThursdAI

Hey everyone, it's Alex (still traveling!), and oh boy, what a week again! Advanced Voice Mode is finally here from OpenAI, Google updated their Gemini models in a huge way and then Meta announced MultiModal LlaMas and on device mini Llamas (and we also got a "better"? multimodal from Allen AI called MOLMO!)From Weights & Biases perspective, our hackathon was a success this weekend, and then I went down to Menlo Park for my first Meta Connect conference, full of news and updates and will do a full recap here as well. ThursdAI - Recaps of the most high signal AI weekly spaces is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Overall another crazy week in AI, and it seems that everyone is trying to rush something out the door before OpenAI Dev Day next week (which I'll cover as well!) Get ready, folks, because Dev Day is going to be epic!TL;DR of all topics covered: * Open Source LLMs * Meta llama 3.2 Multimodal models (11B & 90B) (X, HF, try free)* Meta Llama 3.2 tiny models 1B & 3B parameters (X, Blog, download)* Allen AI releases MOLMO - open SOTA multimodal AI models (X, Blog, HF, Try It)* Big CO LLMs + APIs* OpenAI releases Advanced Voice Mode to all & Mira Murati leaves OpenAI * Google updates Gemini 1.5-Pro-002 and 1.5-Flash-002 (Blog)* This weeks Buzz * Our free course is LIVE - more than 3000 already started learning how to build advanced RAG++* Sponsoring tonights AI Tinkerers in Seattle, if you're in Seattle, come through for my demo* Voice & Audio* Meta also launches voice mode (demo)* Tools & Others* Project ORION - holographic glasses are here! (link)Meta gives us new LLaMas and AI hardwareLLama 3.2 Multimodal 11B and 90BThis was by far the biggest OpenSource release of this week (tho see below, may not be the "best"), as a rumored released finally came out, and Meta has given our Llama eyes! Coming with 2 versions (well 4 if you count the base models which they also released), these new MultiModal LLaMas were trained with an adapter architecture, keeping the underlying text models the same, and placing a vision encoder that was trained and finetuned separately on top. LLama 90B is among the best open-source mutlimodal models available— Meta team at launchThese new vision adapters were trained on a massive 6 Billion images, including synthetic data generation by 405B for questions/captions, and finetuned with a subset of 600M high quality image pairs. Unlike the rest of their models, the Meta team did NOT claim SOTA on these models, and the benchmarks are very good but not the best we've seen (Qwen 2 VL from a couple of weeks ago, and MOLMO from today beat it on several benchmarks) With text-only inputs, the Llama 3.2 Vision models are functionally the same as the Llama 3.1 Text models; this allows the Llama 3.2 Vision models to be a drop-in replacement for Llama 3.1 8B/70B with added image understanding capabilities.Seems like these models don't support multi image or video as well (unlike Pixtral for example) nor tool use with images. Meta will also release these models on meta.ai and every other platform, and they cited a crazy 500 million monthly active users of their AI services across all their apps

Drone News Update

Welcome to your weekly UAS news update, we have 4 stories for you this week: Remote ID enforcement begins, Bill to control airspace in Illinois Senate, St Louis Drone Bill update, and DJI Avata 2 Leaks. First up the FAA's deferred enforcement of remote ID ends this Saturday. This means that remote ID is now required to operate any drone that is registered or needs to be registered. If your drone doesn't have remote ID, you can equip it using a broadcast module or you can fly it at a FRIA. FRIA information is available in the UAS Facility maps or on Aloft Air aware. https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-extends-remote-id-enforcement-date-six-months Next up is an update on the St Louis drone bill that would regulate airspace… The bill has passed the city's legislature and is now on the Mayor's desk. Like we previously covered, this bill limits commercial operators and attempts to control airspace, including airspace around emergency vehicles, schools, publicly owned buildings, and events. If these laws are violated, a pilot faces fines and the confiscation of the drone. This is a perfect example of a municipality over reacting to a proposed drone operation. We'll keep you updated if this becomes law. https://www.stlouis-mo.gov/government/city-laws/upload/legislative/boardbills/committee-substitute-amended/BB199CSAA%20Combined%20Final%205.pdf Third this week is an Illinois bill that would also control the airspace. This bill would allocate the lowest 150' to of airspace to be controlled by municipalities, who could create their own rules around “public” airspace. If you're in IL, please reach out to Senators Julie Morrison and Linda Holmes to let them know this bill goes against the FAA's sole jurisdiction of the airspace. It's also interesting to note that this bill doesn't specifically attempt to restrict UAS, but instead would apply to all aircraft. Another one we'll keep you updated on! https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/BillStatus.asp?DocTypeID=SB&DocNum=2849&GAID=17&SessionID=112&LegID=151674 Ending on a better note, ther's leaks for the DJI Avata 2… Leaded pictures show the Avata 2, which appears to be a streamlined and a bit thinner version of the original Avata. With the leaked drone images come another set of DJI goggles with forward facing cameras, possibly to allow for an AR Experience. Leaked specs for the Avata suggest a 1/1.3” CMOS Sensor, 155 degree FOV, f/2.8, and 4K 60/100/120. Rumors say the drone will be about 480 grams and will fly for 27 minutes in normal/sport mode and 12-15 minutes in manual mode. We'll have to see what comes of these leaks! https://dronexl.co/2024/03/10/dji-avata-2-goggles-3-specifications/ Alright, that's it, have a great weekend and we'll see you next week on Monday for the live!

We recorded a Quest 3 impressions segment, but audio from the background video played over our voices and made it unlistenable. In summary, the lenses are awesome with unmatched edge to edge clarity, the IPD setting is nearly unnecessary because of them, the horizontal FOV is pretty much the same as Index, there's a lot less glare/god rays than Index, Josh says it's like the Gear VR lens mod without the drawbacks, the built-in audio is good enough for Justin, it's comfortable with the BoboVR M3 Pro strap, the BoboVR B2 batteries are keeping it fully charged, Virtual Desktop wireless streaming is working very well, and Justin is going to stop using his Index in favor of the Quest 3. MR passthrough is cool, but it looks pretty low res and grainy, and there are distortions are warping, so it needs some work. Thank you for being a part of the podcast There are two ways to increase your income and that is through guest count and your average ticket. But how do we increase this? Signature Consultation What do you like and dislike? What is the goal? What is the history What is the inspiration (Never take the verbal description of clients desire as an accurate description) Recommend the solution - What is the homecare and maintenance for this look  Cost transparency Time transparency Verbal Agreement to move forward If a a color correction or a questionable result sign a consent form  Retail The importance of retail is that it is directly related to increasing your retention and referrals.  For the salon it increases the profits without the trade of time.  The salon can use their profits to invest in more opportunities for sales and supplies.  When we purchase X amount of products we can redeem rewards like BACKBAR or education.   When to talk about retail and how: During service- 4 times 4 different ways When using the product, tell them the cadence of it.  The key word is telling.  If you don't mention it throughout their entire service and then at the end when they leave the treatment room or take off the cape they are not paying attention or focused on your recommendations because now it feels salesy.  The rule of three- Clients are 75% more likely to purchase 1 product when recommended three.  Make a habit of setting the three products you would like them to take home right in front of them. Timing is everything so I would set the products in front of them during their processing or right before you blow dry or cut their hair. It is your responsibility to study what is on the shelf and know how to use it what the benefits are and who is a good candidate for that product Make yourself flash cards, google it, ask someone for help.  Make yourself a list of products that are beneficial to specific challenges Dryness, Aging, Oily, color retention, repair. Any challenge that you can think of We need to be quick on our feet and if you don't know that answer your response should be “I don't know the answer to that but I will find out and get back to you by tomorrow” Rebooking  Despite certain beliefs, rebooking is essential to your business to increase FOV, proper maintenance, builds trust and relationships, creates predictable income, and customer loyalty.  While color is on their hair this is when we need to rebook their next 2 visits. The goal should be 75% of your clients should have their next 2 visits on your books. Especially if they are a modern blonding, extension client, or getting ready for a special event and need their hair and skin looking its best.  Upgrading the service Enhancing the guest experience. If we don't offer the answer will always be NO. Increasing the average ticket is done through upgrading the service. I recommend packaging in your treatments or upgrades during the consultation.  In what ways can you give them the ultimate experience?  Verbally communicate the benefits of these enhancements along with price transparency because no one enjoys a sticker stock.  Another great time to offer an upgrade while the client is relaxing (such as while they are processing, or during a massage, or scalp massage)  Make a list of all your upgrade opportunities that you can offer during a service.  You could create a special menu and show clients after their consultation and ask if there is anything that would like to add during today's visit that they would like to enjoy  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jennifer-alvarez0/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jennifer-alvarez0/support

She completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at University of Tennessee - Knoxville, where she served as Chief Resident, and a fellowship in Musculoskeletal Imaging at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). She is a member of the Radiological Society of North America, American Roentgen Ray Society, American College of Radiology, Tennessee Medical Association and Nashville Academy of Medicine. Dr. Shechtel's clinical interests include MRI safety, quality improvement and resident education. Dr. Shechtel main area of expertise is sarcomas as it pertains to MSK Diagnostic Imaging. Sarcomas are rare cancers that develop in the bones and soft tissues, including fat, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, deep skin tissues and fibrous tissues. There are many risk factors for sarcomas. History of radiation therapy, genetic predisposition and chemical exposure. Imaging properties include size, adjacent tissue differences, infiltrating and contrast enhancement. She was first introduced to the importance of MRI safety by Dr. Peter Petruzzi, MRMD during her residency. She credits Dr. Shellock for her choice to later become a board member of ABMRS.Many factors to consider for sarcoma imaging. coils, image planes, patient positioning, FOV, phase direction, technique, sequence selection etc. Dr. Shechtel doesn't have a preference in field strength if imaging quality isn't compromised. Duplicating a prior study is also a consideration and should be the goal absent of contraindication. High resolution imaging is her preference over small FOV imaging if forced to decide between the two. She stresses the importance of Surgeon preference consideration with joint-to-joint imaging. Prothesis may be in that patient's course of care. Large FOV imaging allows for pre-op measurements as well as visualization of skip lesions. We always love it when our guests come prepared with helpful visual aids. Dr. Shechtel brings imaging examples which help illustrate her case in point. It was a joy spending with someone of Dr. Shechtel's caliber.

Check out the Video ---> Spatial Resolution: https://youtu.be/_rtqLdWvK2IMatt helps to describe the concept of spatial resolution in MRI terms. In MRI, spatial resolution is defined by the size of the imaging voxels. Since voxels are three-dimensional rectangular solids, the resolution is frequently different in the three different directions. The size of the voxel and therefore the resolution depends on matrix size, the field-of-view, and the slice thickness.Resolution is the ability of the human eyes to distinguish one structure from another. In MRI the resolution is determined by the number of pixels in a specified FOV. The higher the image resolution, the better the small pathologies can be diagnosed. Resolution is directly proportional to the number of pixels (The higher the number of pixels the greater the resolution). The pixel size can be calculated by dividing the field of view by the matrix size Thanks for joining us here in Zone 3!  Make sure to Like and Subscribe.  Links from Episode Discussion:Philips Healthcare innovation -- https://youtu.be/Z7d9xadr3VMPsychology of the workplace -- https://youtu.be/iJ2uFGyEakkAbout our Guest:Matt is the President of RITE Advantage LLC.  A company focused on educating and testing MRI, CT, Sonography, and Radiography students and technologists.
