These twin brothers' science project found noisy public washrooms aren't just scary–they're dangerous to your health

Sammy and Leo Marcus, of Winnipeg, have turned their own sensitivities to the startlingly loud automatic toilets in public washrooms, into a prize-winning science project that's shedding a light on the plight of young kids and also people who wear hearing aids. The teens, who are 13 year old twins, measured hundreds of devices in hundreds of bathrooms across the Manitoba capitol, to document just how loud are those whirring automatic hand driers, the paper towel dispensers, the urinals and the hands-free flushing toilets. They found that not only do these noises cause anxiety, but also often blow past the acceptable legal noise levels that can lead to hearing damage, over a sustained period of time, and require ear protection, especially for janitors and others who work in bathrooms. Curiously, they found that of all the buildings in their survey, the Jewish ones have the quietest restrooms. Their scientific research just won the duo top prize for their age category in Winnipeg's city-wide annual science fair. They call their project The Royal Flush. And while the research has ended, for now, the hope is their work will prompt real change in how bathrooms are designed–not just for maximum hygiene, but also keeping hearing safety in mind. On this episode of The CJN Daily, Sammy and Leo Marcus join to reveal the best and the worst of their findings, and how they coped with strange looks, strict librarians, and grungy stalls. Bible Reading: Psalm 119:65-73Denver tugged his mother's hand. "Come on, Mom! I want to find out if my science fair project won a ribbon!" "Okay, but help me keep an eye on Darcy," Denver's mom answered as she motioned for his little sister to follow them. When they arrived at the table holding Denver's project, they spotted a red ribbon attached to the board displaying Denver's research. "Second place! Cool!" Denver exclaimed. Then he, his mom, and Darcy walked around the gym looking at other projects. Denver congratulated some of his friends on their ribbons too."Denver, did you give Darcy a piece of gum?" Mom asked."No, I know Darcy's too little for gum.""Well, she's chewing something." The three of them sat down on the gym's bleachers so Mom could ask Darcy about the gum. When they realized Darcy had yanked an old, already-chewed piece of gum from under one of the science fair tables, Denver cried, "Gross!"Darcy began to whimper."Darcy, it's okay," Denver consoled his sister. "Mom, why would she do that?""She's little. She saw something that looked good, so she grabbed it. She doesn't have much experience making wise decisions yet. But she's not the only one who needs help making good choices." Mom smiled and shook her head. Then they returned to admiring the science projects set up in the gym.On the ride home, Denver asked, "Mom, what did you mean about how Darcy's not the only one who needs help making choices?""Well, we all need help choosing what's best sometimes," said Mom."Because not everything that looks good is actually good for us," Denver said. "Like Darcy's gum." "Exactly," Mom replied. "Thankfully, we have a place to turn when we need wisdom. Because you and I trust in Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins and then came back to life so we could have a relationship with God, we can go to our heavenly Father with any need we face, and He'll give us guidance.""Good to know, Mom. I'm going to ask God for guidance about next year's science project--and about keeping Darcy away from old chewing gum." –Allison Wilson Lee How About You?Have you ever faced a decision and needed help? We all have choices in life to make, and some of them are difficult. But as God's children, we can ask God for help and trust Him for wisdom in making decisions. As we look to God's Word, the Bible, for guidance and share our needs with Him, He will help us make wise choices that show others we have a relationship with Jesus. Ellie's science project explored how train weight impacts speed, while Arwen's social studies project highlighted the innovations and impacts of World War I.Inspiration Behind the ProjectsEllie was inspired by a video in class on electromagnetic trains and tested whether heavier or lighter trains would be faster. Surprisingly, the heavier train won. Arwen chose World War I because it's less discussed than World War II and focused on its lasting impacts, including trench warfare, technological advances like tanks and submarines, and banned weapons like mustard gas.Highlights of the DayAt the Tellus Museum, students set up their projects and had a chance to chat with classmates and parents. For virtual learners like Ellie and Arwen, meeting peers in person was a highlight. Ellie reconnected with a classmate who placed second, while Arwen met many classmates for the first time. When the winners were announced, both were shocked. “I couldn't believe it!” Ellie said, while Arwen admitted she was “shaking like crazy” when her name was called.Advice for Future ParticipantsArwen suggests, “Don't overthink it—just have fun.” Ellie encourages students to be creative and unique with their ideas. What They Love About GCAEllie appreciates GCA's helpful teachers and variety of classes, while Arwen enjoys learning from home. Both agreed the fair was rewarding, especially meeting peers and seeing the Tellus Museum.Congrats to Ellie and Arwen for their amazing achievements–stay Hootworthy!

Each was motivated to create The Cycle Book when conversations with clients revealed recurring missing information…. “When people are trying to conceive…they are often surprised to find out that the 14 day thing isn't necessarily real, and the getting pregnant at any moment is most definitely not real, that it's actually just a very tiny little window.” Learn more of what you didn't know you didn't know - on this month's FLOW.   Program Notes:   Episode Links: Morgan Miller - https://softcornermidwifery.com/morgan Laura Federico - a https://www.laurafedericotherapy.com/ The Cycle Book: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/747795/the-cycle-book-by-laura-federico-lcsw-cst-and-morgan-miller-cpm-lm/   How's Your Flow? BT is excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2025 Primary Science Fair, a key feature of the renowned BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE), taking place from January 08 - 11, 2025 in Dublin. Celebrating 25 years as sponsor and custodian, BT is encouraging primary school students from 3rd to 6th class to collaborate, brainstorm, and create exciting STEM projects to be in with a chance to represent their school at the Primary Science Fair in the RDS, Dublin, in January. The Primary Science Fair was created 25 years ago to ignite a passion for STEM in younger students and provide an opportunity for an entire class of up to 30 students to showcase their projects together within the environs of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. Projects can explore various scientific areas like living things, materials, environmental care, and energy and forces. The important deadline for submission is Friday, November 1st, and schools will be notified in November if their projects will be showcased at the Fair in January 2025. Principal Orla Whelton from Ballyroe NS, Co. Cork,?said, "I highly encourage any schools considering entering the Primary Science Fair to do so. Our school has participated for the last eight years, and it's an amazing experience for the students. It introduces them to the world of STEM and fosters a love for science that continues through secondary education and beyond." Mari Cahalane, Head of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, added, "For 25 years, the Primary Science Fair has been a key part of the BTYSTE, offering a platform for young minds to develop a lifelong passion for STEM in a non-competitive environment. Get your class together, start brainstorming, and let the fun and learning begin! We hope many participants will go on to take part in the BTYSTE and encourage as many schools as possible to enter." On this episode of the Alex Pierson Show Podcast, our host Alex Pierson first starts off speaking with a political columnist with the Toronto Sun, Brian Lilley. They talk about his recent piece on how the Trudeau liberals' own data on the carbon tax shows that it actually hurts the economy instead of helping it, and why this is just another major reason to completely cut the contentious tax. And after that, Alex has the pleasure of speaking with one of the leading minds of the next generation, 13-year-old Evan Budz, whose Science Fair project can save hundreds if not thousands of lives a year. Alex and Evan talk about why and how he designed, programmed and invented a virtual lifeguard imaging program to alert users if someone is drowning in the pool!
